There has long been a need for a book of this nature - an interdisciplinary analysis of Chinese corporations and the myriad factors that should be considered in locating and understanding the corporations within their sociopolitical ecosystem. 8-10) considers the impact of the Chinese corporate-political ecosystem on the natural-human ecosystem and suggests how traditional Chinese philosophy may provide insights and tools "for recalibrating the incentives of the current corporate-political ecosystem and promoting more harmonious interaction between Chinese corporations and their nature/human/international environment" (231). Individuals who take advantage of global networks to flee abroad with allegedly corrupt proceeds comprise an important yet understudied group of corruption suspects. We characterize them as "globalized corruption fugitives" and, using the case of China, investigate how they take advantage of international loopholes. Under President Xi Jinping, China actively began to pursue such suspects. Our analysis of their backgrounds and how they evade repatriation to China is based mainly on a list of China's 100 wanted fugitives issued through Interpol Red Notices, supplemented with interviews and documentary data. We find that (1) unexpectedly, government officials did not comprise the majority in the sample; rather, state-owned companies and financial institutions, especially those based in coastal regions, seem to breed fugitive corruption suspects; (2) a tremendous amount of capital has been laundered; (3) Western countries are the most popular destinations of these fugitives, due in part to the protection against repatriation of these countries' legal systems; and (4) Hong Kong serves as a distinct transit point for fugitives from the PRC's justice system. This article traces the circuitous route of China's airlines industry into the ranks of China's strategic sectors. Although the airlines industry now belongs to a small group of industries characterized by oligopoly among state-owned enterprises, its initial reform pathway in the post-Mao era hinted at a different future. In the early years of the reform period, a decentralist approach to developing the industry laid the groundwork for an open market structure with a comparatively low degree of state intervention. Why was this trajectory of gradual state retreat abruptly reversed in 1997? In that year, regulators began a bold retrenchment leading finally to an administrative restructuring of the industry around the "Big Three" state-owned carriers. This article argues that this policy reversal was shaped by the state's increasing emphasis on developing a team of state-controlled national champions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
