6. Influence of an inserted bar on the flow regimes in the hopper*

Abstract

We investigated the influence of an inserted bar on the hopper flow experimentally. Three geometrical parameters, size of upper outlet D 1, size of lower outlet D 0, and the height of bar H, are variables here. With varying H we found three regimes: one transition from clogging to a surface flow and another transition from a surface flow to a dense flow. For the dense flow, the flow rate follows Beverloo’s law and there is a saturation of inclination of free surface θ. We plotted the velocity field and there is a uniform linear relation between the particle velocity and depth from the free surface. We also found that the required value of D 1 to guarantee the connectivity of flow is little smaller than D 0. For the transition from a surface flow to a dense flow, there is a jump of flow rate and the minimum θ for flowing is two degrees larger than the repose angle.

Abstract

Based on the meson–meson mixing and Regge trajectory, this paper establishes the mass relations which can describe the mass spectrum of 11P1 meson state. Using these mass relations, it obtains the mass of K1B, h1 (1380) and hc (1P) to be 1358.5 MeV, 1468 MeV and 3543.9 MeV, respectively. The results are compared with other theoretical results and should be tested by experiments in the future.

Abstract

In order to explore the dependence of plasticity of metallic material on a high magnetic field, the effects of the different magnetic induction intensities ( H = 0 T, 0.5 T, 1 T, 3 T, and 5 T) and pulses number (N = 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50) on tensile strength (σ b) and elongation (δ) of 2024 aluminum alloy are investigated in the synchronous presences of a high magnetic field and external stress. The results show that the magnetic field exerts apparent and positive effects on the tensile properties of the alloy. Especially under the optimized condition of H * = 1 T and N* = 30, the σ b and δ are 410 MPa and 17% that are enhanced by 9.3% and 30.8% respectively in comparison to those of the untreated sample. The synchronous increases of tensile properties are attributed to the magneto-plasticity effect on a quantum scale. That is, the magnetic field will accelerate the state conversion of radical pair generated between the dislocation and obstacles from singlet to the triplet state. The bonding energy between them is meanwhile lowered and the moving flexibility of dislocations will be enhanced. At H * = 1 T and N* = 30, the dislocation density is enhanced by 1.28 times. The relevant minimum grain size is 266.1 nm, which is reduced by 35.2%. The grain refining is attributed to the dislocation accumulation and subsequent dynamic recrystallization. The (211) and (220) peak intensities are weakened. It is deduced that together with the recrystallization, the fine grains will transfer towards the slip plane and contribute to the slipping deformation.

Abstract

The cluster state is an indispensable resource for one-way quantum computing (1WQC). We propose a practical scheme for constructing cluster states among nuclear spins in nitrogen-vacancy defect centres (NV centers) in different diamonds. The entanglement of nuclear spins within an NV centre is made by hyperfine coupling via electron spin, and the entanglement between remote NV centres is accomplished using the parity projection of emitted photons. We discus the possibility to build large-scale nuclear-spin cluster states with diamonds.

Abstract

The geometric structures, electronic and magnetic properties of the 3d transition metal doped clusters Pd12M (M = Sc-Ni) are studied using the semi-core pseudopots density functional theory. The groundstate geometric structure of the Pd12M cluster is probably of pseudoicosahedron. The Ih-Pd12M cluster has the most thermodynamic stability in five different symmetric isomers. The energy gap shows that Pd12M cluster is partly metallic. Both the absolutely predominant metal bond and very weak covalent bond might exist in the Pd12M cluster. The magnetic moment of Pd12M varies from 0 to 5 µB, implying that it has a potential application in new nanomaterials with tunable magnetic properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We present a fully stabilized Yb-fiber frequency comb locked to a microwave standard and an optical reference separately. The carrier-envelope offset frequency is generated by a standard f –2f interferometer with 40 dB signal-to-noise ratio. The offset frequency and the repetition rate are stabilized simultaneously to the radio frequency reference for more than 30 hours, and the fractional Allan deviation of the comb is the same as the microwave standard of 10−12 at 1 s. Alternatively, the comb is locked to an ultra-stable optical reference at 972 nm using an intracavity electro-optic modulator, exhibiting a residual integrated phase noise of 458 mrad (1 Hz–10 MHz) and an in-loop tracking stability of 1.77 × 10−18 at 1 s, which is significantly raised by six orders comparing to the case locked to the microwave frequency standard. Abstract

We utilized a set of fused silica thin plates to broaden the spectrum of 1 kHz, 30 fs Ti:sapphire amplified laser pulses to an octave. Following the compression by chirped mirror pairs, the generated few-cycle pulses were focused onto an argon filled gas cell. We detected high order harmonics corresponding to a train of 209 as pulses, characterized by the reconstruction of attosecond beating by interference of two-photon transition (RABITT) technique. Compared with the conventional attosecond pulse trains, the broad harmonics in such pulse trains cover more energy range, so it is more efficient in studying some typical cases, such as resonances, with frequency resolved RABITT. As the solid thin plates can support high power supercontinuum generation, it is feasible to tailor the spectrum to have different central wavelength and spectral width, which will make the RABITT source work in different applications. Abstract

A compact high power diode-pumped passively mode-locked Nd:YVO4 laser with high repetition rate is realized. Using an Nd:YVO4 crystal and a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) in the oscillator, the picosecond pulse output with an average power of 1.38 W, a repetition rate of 3.24 GHz, and a pulse duration of 11.4 ps is achieved. After one stage of amplification, the final output power reaches 11.34 W, corresponding to a total optical-to-optical efficiency of about 32%. The root mean square (RMS) value of power fluctuation is demonstrated to be less than 0.6% in 24 hours, showing a superior stability with the compact configuration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Beverlooʼs scaling law can describe the flow rate of grains discharging from hoppers. In this paper, we show that the Beverlooʼs scaling law is valid for varying material parameters. The flow rates from a hopper with different hopper and orifice sizes (D, D0) are studied by running large-scale simulations. When the hopper size is fixed, the numerical results show that Beverlooʼs law is valid even if the orifice diameter is very large and then the criteria for this law are discussed. To eliminate the effect of walls, it is found that the criteria can be suggested as or . Interestingly, it is found that there is still a scaling relation between the flow rate and orifice diameter if D/D0 is fixed and less than 2. When the orifice diameter is close to the hopper size, the velocity field changes and the vertical velocities of grains above the free fall region are much larger. The third harmonic generation (THG) of a linear cavity Ti:sapphire regenerative amplifier by use of a K3B6O10Cl (KBOC) crystal is studied for the first time. Output power up to 5.9 mW is obtained at a central wavelength of 263 nm, corresponding to a conversion efficiency of 4.5% to the second harmonic power. Our results show a tremendous potential for nonlinear frequency conversion into the deep ultraviolet range with the new crystal and the output laser power can be further improved. Abstract

In this paper the laser activities of a diode-pumped Yb:LuAG ceramic which was prepared by the solid-state reactive sintering method were reported. The maximum output power was 1.86 W in the continuous wave (CW) laser operation, corresponding to a slope efficiency of 53.6%. The CW laser could be tuned from 1030 to 1096 nm by inserting a prism in the cavity. With the assist of a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM), passive mode-locking was realized, delivering sub-picosecond pulses with 933 fs duration and an average power of 532 mW at a repetition rate of 90.35 MHz.
