1. Chemisorption-Induced Resonance Frequency Shift of a Microcantilever

Abstract

The autonomy and property of atoms/molecules adsorbed on the surface of a microcantilever can be probed by measuring its resonance frequency shift due to adsorption. The resonance frequency change of a cantilever induced by chemisorption is theoretically studied. Oxygen chemisorbed on the Si(100) surface is taken as a representative example. We demonstrate that the resonant response of the cantilever is mainly determined by the chemisorption-induced bending stiffness variation, which depends on the bond configurations formed by the adsorbed atoms and substrate atoms. This study is helpful for optimal design of microcantilever-based sensors for various applications.

Abstract

A femtosecond optical Kerr effect experiment has been used to study the dynamic process of third-order optical nonlinearity for organic solvents acetone, acetonitrile, alcohol, benzene, chloroform, dichlomathane, dimenthylsulfoxande, dioxane, ethanol, and methanol, etc. The nonlinear refractive index for the solvents at femtosecond time scale was measured.

Abstract

An ab initio calculation of the electric-field gradient (EFG) at the site of a phosphorous impurity substituting an Al atom in &agr;-Al2O3 is carried out using the WIEN2k code with the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave plus local orbital method (LAPW+lo) in the frame of density functional theory. The atomic lattice relaxations caused by the implanted impurities were calculated for two different charged states to well describe the electronic structure of the doped system. The EFG at the site of the phosphorous impurity in the charged supercell calculated with the exchange-correlation potential of the Wu-Cohen generalized gradient approximation (WC-GGA) is 0.573 × 1021 V/m2. Then, the nuclear quadrupole moment of the I = 3 state in 28P is deduced to be 137mb from the quadrupole interaction frequency of 190 kHz measured recently by the &bgr;-NQR method. Abstract

With the recent commissioning of a gas-filled recoil separator at Institute of Modern Physics (IMP) in Lanzhou, the decay properties of 271Ds (Z = 110) were studied via the 208Pb(64Ni, n) reaction at a beam energy of 313.3MeV. Based on the separator coupled with a position sensitive silicon strip detector, we carried out the energy-position-time correlation measurements for the implanted nucleus and its subsequent decay ??'s. One ??- decay chain for 271Ds was established. The α energy and decay time of the 271Ds nucleus were measured to be 10.644MeV and 96.8 ms, which are consistent with the values reported in the literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
