Urban proximity planning is foreseen as a solution to foster a "sustainable" city, including economic viability, environmental soundness and social inclusivity. This paper focuses on the inclusivity aspects by questioning the adoption of urban proximities: how far planning for urban proximities resonates or conflicts with current residential preferences and practices? Based on functional, social, and sensitive attributes, five latent residential preferences have been identified: spatial proximity, tranquility, elitism, social proximity, and conviviality. These aspirations form the basis for a longitudinal, spatial, and clustering analysis. The results of the analysis, conducted on 2200+ respondents in Geneva, reveal characteristics in residential preferences. Firstly, preferences are stable over time, but malleable to changing circumstances. Secondly, some preferences show clear spatial distribution patterns when regressed with residential location choice. Thirdly, the gap between preferences and actual residential practices varies across morphological attributes. As a main result, the clustering analysis shows that 43 % of the population aspire more to tranquility than to functional proximity; and those aspiring for proximities (32 %) are the youngest and wealthiest. Understanding whether urban green space (UGS) provision becomes more adequate and equal is a global issue. Proposing a spatiotemporal lens, this study investigates the development of UGS provision at the city scale from supply-demand perspective. By using an improved n -step floating catchment area method, we calculate the supply and supply-and-demand ratio of UGS accessibility for UGS provisions that are accessible and actually enjoyed by residents in residential locations from 2012 to 2021 in Shanghai, China. We assess these changes with a Mann–Kendall test, and evaluate the changes of quantitative equity with the environment concentration index (ECI) and the spatial disparity of UGS provision using spatiotemporal statistics. Findings show UGS provisions that are accessible and actually enjoyed by residents in residential areas in Shanghai, has become more adequate and equal during the last 10 years. UGS provision for residential areas in the central city area is more equal on the ECI and displays more significant heterogeneity than in other areas. The restrictions imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic have led to significant changes in travel behaviour and public activities, and they might have contributed to changes in residential location choices. However, research examining the relationship between residential location choice and COVID-19 is very limited. To that end, this paper focuses on how pandemic-induced changes in work patterns, travel preferences and daily activity patterns have altered residential preferences and potentially, relocation trends. The main determinants of residential location choice have been established in the literature over the past 30 years: physical attributes of the dwelling; surrounding built environment; affordability; and accessibility to transportation, workplaces, and services. However, each of these determinants are prioritised differently depending on the circumstances. Therefore, exploring how these priorities have shifted after the pandemic can pave the way for understanding how preferences for residential location choice shift as a consequence. From the review, the key findings include the decreasing importance of transport and workplace accessibility in residential location choice after the pandemic. Firstly, teleworking is becoming more prevalent within office jobs than before the pandemic, leading to less frequent trips to conventional workplaces, reducing the need to live within a commutable distance to a workplace. Secondly, trips to other activities have likewise become less frequent due to either remote alternatives (e.g., online shopping) or shifting towards services closer to home, reducing the need to travel in general. Another consequence of the pandemic is people staying at home longer than before, thus increasing the need for more desirable dwelling attributes such as larger house size and wider surrounding green space. The term "housing ladder" refers to the phenomenon of people moving from one housing type to another according to changing demands of different life stages. This phenomenon is observed in many countries and is known as the Jutaku Sugoroku Paradigm in the Japanese context. This study aims to clarify whether adult children's access to homeownership might be affected by their parents' homeownership and their place of origin. Questionnaire Data from a survey across Japan's two largest metropolitan areas, Tokyo and Osaka, were analyzed by combining crosstabulations and a binomial logit model. The results revealed that individuals are more likely to attain homeownership if they come from a metropolitan area and if their home of origin is an owner-occupied house. These findings suggest that housing inequality is being passed on to the next generation by parents' homeownership status and residential location. Japanese housing policies that promote private ownership of housing may reinforce these inequalities. This research considers the intersection between intergenerational support, housing outcomes, and spatially-differentiated housing markets to examine the transmission and reproduction of housing inequality across generations. Specifically, it aims to advance the understanding of the relationship between parental backgrounds and young adults' housing tenure as well as residential location outcomes. Drawing on original survey data collected in Shanghai over 2018 and 2019, this study, firstly, reveals both Chinese young adults' strong tendency to enter homeownership early in their housing trajectories and the key role of parental support. Alongside the influence of parental financial support and other socioeconomic resources in housing market entry, the analysis shows the importance of living in parental-owned housing in enabling subsequent homeownership access. Secondly, we investigate the spatial dimension of the intergenerational reproduction of inequality. While descriptive analyses imply more advantaged parental backgrounds structure access to higher value and to some extent higher gain submarkets, our regression modelling points to significant effects being concentrated among individual socioeconomic characteristics. Models of residential location choice suggest that the decision where to live depends on various economic, social, and environmental factors, including housing prices, lifecycle stage, household structure, job accessibility, and commuting time. By focusing on the motivational dimension of choice, and by linking the concept of regulatory focus to residential location preferences, the present paper extends these classic models. According to regulatory focus theory, goal-pursuit behavior is regulated by two motivational systems – promotion and prevention. Individuals with a promotion focus are motivated by the need for accomplishment, and use eager strategies to attain their goals. They take risks, are creative, and have a preference for a high-speed and fast-paced lifestyle. Individuals with a prevention focus are motivated by the need for safety and security, and use vigilant strategies. They try to avoid risk, attach high importance to stability, and prefer a more relaxed and slow-paced lifestyle. Three studies tested the effect of regulatory focus on residential location choice. Study 1 (n = 85) examined the relationship between promotion focus and the choice to live in fast-paced cities. The participants' regulatory focus was assessed as a chronic disposition using the regulatory focus questionnaire, after which they viewed images of a vibrant city (crowds of people rushing in the streets, heavy vehicle traffic), and were asked whether they would be willing to live in this city (yes/no). Promotion focus positively predicted the probability of 'yes' responses. Study 2 (n = 79) examined the relationship between prevention focus and the choice to live in slow-paced cities. The participants' regulatory focus was first measured using the regulatory focus questionnaire. Then, they viewed images of a relaxed city (people walking slowly from one place to the other, sparse vehicle traffic), after which they were asked whether they would be willing to live in this city (yes/no). There was no direct relationship between prevention focus the probability of 'yes' responses. In Study 3 (n = 102), priming was used to have participants experience either a history of promotion success (vs. promotion failure) or a history of prevention success (vs. prevention failure). Then, the participants viewed images of a fast-paced city and images of a slow-paced city, and were asked to choose in which of the two cities they would prefer to live (fast-paced city/slow-paced city). The experience of promotion success was positively associated with choosing to live in a fast-paced city. The experience of prevention success was not associated with choosing to live in a slow-paced city. Together, these findings suggest that individuals with a promotion focus are attracted to, and prefer to live in, vibrant and fast-paced urban environments. There was no evidence in this research for a direct relationship between prevention focus and the choice to live in slow-paced urban environments. This paper examines three levels of digital inequality, access, use, and outcomes, within a major U.S. city. The Resources and Appropriation (RA) Theory is used to explain the digital divide within a city. Using paper and electronic surveys in English and Spanish, the researchers conducted a city-wide survey to examine all three levels of digital inequality. The research methods were descriptive statistics and regression analysis. Findings include that the digital divide persists at all three levels, with older respondents. Furthermore, geographical residential location, income level, and educational attainment emerged as significant predictors of digital inequality. Findings not normally found in the digital divide literature are that geography and limited English proficiency significantly impacted internet use and outcomes. These findings contribute to our understanding of the digital divide within a large urban area and shed light on how inequalities manifest across different regions of the city. Linking the urban spatial structure with residential mobility is a vital yet challenging mission. With a unique dataset tracking changes in individual residential locations in Shanghai from 2014 to 2015, this paper portrays the directional trajectories of Shanghai's spatial structure and rigorously examines the motivations of residents for different spatial preferences with the approach of propensity score matching. By classifying the spatial structure into four typologies, polycentricity, sprawl, dispersed-monocentricity and compact-monocentricity, we find that relocated residents push Shanghai's spatial structure in greater favor of sprawl or compact-monocentricity. Furthermore, the movers towards sprawl, decentralized-monocentricity and compact-monocentricity mainly benefit from housing, jobs, and neighborhood amenities, respectively; and the movers towards the polycentric spatial structure can take the advantage of favorable house prices. Many studies have looked into the private car ownership and residential environment factors that affect current carsharing adoption from a cross-sectional perspective, while very few have focused on dynamic variables related to home relocation and changes in vehicle access. Using survey data collected in eight typical neighborhoods with a high level of carsharing in Utrecht, the Netherlands, this study explored how dynamics in car ownership, residential relocation, and current carsharing membership are related, and how this relationship shapes intention for future carsharing membership. The explanatory variables were the changes in residential location, and past and expected changes in private car ownership. Results of our binary logistic regression and ordinary least squares regression modeling show that residential relocation has a limited effect on carsharing adoption: Newcomers from lower urbanization level neighborhoods need some time to get used to carsharing and adopt it. For car ownership dynamics, future intentions to change private car ownership are more likely to affect current and future carsharing adoption than previous changes: Previous and future changes in car ownership and carsharing adoption have different effects on actual and expected behaviors. Brussels (Belgium) is one of several major cities with a recent emblematic pedestrianisation project aiming to give public space 'back to people'. Wondering whether these initiatives represent 'cracks in the system' of car dominance, we studied how support for the pedestrianisation has evolved across society, taking into account people's socio-economic and mobility attributes as well as geographical scale. We conducted surveys before and after implementation among metropolitan area residents, people employed in the area and passers-by through online and face-to-face surveys. Findings show a strong increase in overall support, both for the pedestrianisation the central boulevards (now with a majority now in favour) as for a further roll-out. One of the main problems of the periphery is the internal migration of technological human capital in one direction from communities in the geographic hinterlands to big cities. This process is one of the most influential factors that explains the poverty trap of the periphery. In this paper, we suggest that this process results from a failure of coordination between individuals. Our findings show that students in the periphery who study technology and science are less willing than other students to remain there after graduating. However, when we offered them a model that enhanced the coordination between them involving remaining in the periphery in a homogeneous neighborhood of university graduates after completing their degree, we found a significant increase in their willingness to choose the periphery as a residential location. This finding was evident in all students, but it was stronger among students who studied science and technology. In addition, we conducted robustness checks suggesting that creating mixed neighborhoods that are less segregated and a network embracing future knowledge workers are two options for making the periphery an attractive place for such individuals to live. Migrants' residential location plays a critical role in their social integration process. In China, large numbers of migrants are coming to the major cities due to the opportunities offered, and most of them have to be settled in the disadvantaged urban periphery. By examining the place effects of suburban residence on the incorporation of migrants into cities, this paper contributes to the literature on understanding the socio-spatial exclusion of migrants. Drawing on a survey undertaken in Shanghai, it is found that, after controlling for the effects of individual characteristics, migrants living in the suburbs not only earn less than their counterparts in the central city, but are also less likely to construct inter-group and diverse social ties to aid future prospects. Young adults who achieved independent living often go back to their parental homes because they cannot afford to maintain financial independence. While much attention has been paid to identifying factors contributing to giving up independent living, the lives of young people after returning to parental homes have yet to be understood. This study examines the employment outcomes of young people who have returned to their parents' homes, using data from 2003 to 2011 waves of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 Cohort (NLSY 97). The results of the analysis show the heterogeneous effect of the boomerang move. Boomerang movers in the lowest income groups have improved employment outcomes, but not the other groups. However, the employment outcomes of boomerang movers are still lower than those of young people who remain independent across all income groups. Changes in residential location affect income, and the impact varies by income group. A residential shift away from the central city reduces the income of the middle income group. While region change is positively related to income for the lowest income group, it negatively affects the other groups. One of the challenges faced in understanding platform gig work is who are the gig workers involved in this novelty labour relationship. We attempt to answer it by using mobile phone trajectories to map the residential locations of gig drivers in the ride-hailing platform economy in Chengdu, China. Then, we reconstruct the relationships between the spatial structure of the ride-hailing drivers and their neighbourhood-level sociodemographic characteristics and residential built environments. We found that ride-hailing drivers are more likely to come from neighbourhoods with lower-income and less regular job opportunities. Their residences formed living clusters with urban villages, resettlement houses, and shanty towns. Our study suggests that ride-hailing platforms do not liberate gig workers from the structural rural-urban disparities but form a continuation of the structural barriers and discrimination in the division of labour, even if the technological innovation discourse in the platform economy argues that the gig driving can attract the well-educated and other minorities. • Ride-hailing drivers are more likely to come from neighbourhoods with lower-income and less regular job opportunities. • Marginalized workers excluded from regular employment relationships are experiencing insecurity in more severe ways. • Platform work still do not disrupt the structural barriers and discrimination in the division of labour. • The distinct gig work and marginal social status can be regarded as a continuation of urban-rural disparity and residential segregation. • Collective identity of migrant workers in the self-consciousness awakening may produce new and innovative organization of gig work. This essay introduces the special issue and explains its rationale. It argues that, while the residential location and neighbourhood remain significant, urban segregation needs to be understood and examined in terms of everyday activities, social networks and mobility within the context of broader social and political-economic processes. This broader focus is needed, among others, because of the emergence and diffusion of uneven urban infrastructures and enhanced – albeit unequal – physical mobilities within and between cities. After briefly reviewing recent work that understands and analyses segregation as dynamic and multi-dimensional, the essay summarises the contributions of the eight papers to the existing literature. These lie primarily in the analysis of how exposure to social difference and to opportunities for upward social mobility – as both indication and antecedent of segregation – is shaped by everyday activities and mobility in a wider context of unevenly networked urbanism. Due to rapid urbanization, it is essential to understand the factors related to the selection of residential location and their effect on socio-economic variables, built environment, travel attitudes, and travel behavior. In this longitudinal study, structural equation modeling was used to characterize people's choices based on the importance of location. The importance of location, accessibility of residential location, and quality of neighbourhoods, along with mode-specific latent variables such as pro-bicycle perception, were used as latent variables. This study also includes the effect of two-wave samples of a small Indian city related to the attitudinal variables for a residential location with varying land use mixes. Besides the latent variables related to the selection of residential locations, this study also highlights the changes based on travel attitudes and travel behavior of individuals over time with respect to changes in land use mix. Moreover, these results illustrate the effect of individuals' attitudes over a period of time based on the changes in land use within the residential area. Indicator variables such as the price of land and the size of a building have positively affected the importance of location. Apart from these indicators, the selection of residential location depends on the factors related to less polluted areas. This study also suggests policymakers give more importance to using active modes of transport. While a plethora of studies have shown that slum settlements are the commonest choice of residence for low-income migrants in cities, little is known about the peri-urban landscape as host settlements for low-income migrants. This study aims to explore the context, motivation and outcomes of migrant settlements in peri-urban areas in Ghana. Using a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews, the findings suggest that low-income migrants opt for a rent-free stay in uncompleted houses in peri-urban areas. A major reason for this is the affordability challenge low-income migrants face in the rental housing market. Migrants choose to stay in uncompleted houses because they offer more space for both dwelling and storage. The unavailability of services such as electricity and potable water sometimes presented unique challenges for migrants, but this was also found to be a cost-saving mechanism. Chicago's South Side has long been characterized as a "transit desert" – an area with high transit inaccessibility and insufficient infrastructure to meet residents' needs (Jiao & Dillivan, 2013). Without adequate transit, residents cannot reach employment opportunities or regional amenities – contributing to economic, spatial, and social marginalization. The Chicago Transit Authority's proposed Red Line Extension (RLE) is designed to connect the city's far south side neighborhoods to Chicago's core. Given the scope of the RLE, 175 parcels have been chosen for demolition, meaning that a similar number of households face displacement to make room for the RLE right of way – which may have potentially negative consequences in realizing the subsequent benefits of improved transit access. In this article, we perform an ex-ante analysis of RLE induced displacement. Specifically, we: 1) predict potential location choices that transit displacees are most likely to choose; and 2) analyze these locations in relation to access to transit, amenities, employment, and housing affordability, among others. Within the context of transportation planning, ex-ante analysis is important because it can minimize unintended and negative consequences of transit-induced displacement – like decreased transit access and a loss of potential neighborhood improvements - by predicting potential relocation choices for displacees. Such predicted choices can help planners and decision-makers better understand the trade-offs for directly affected households and thereby allow planners and decision-makers to assist in relocation assistance that maximizes the benefits of the necessarily displaced. • Ex ante analysis is used to predict housing locations for transit displacees. • New housing locations are likely to increase housing cost burdens of displacees. • New locations show higher overall rates of heavy rail use. Information and communication technology (ICT) has reshaped the definition of the home by increasing flexibility in selecting residential locations, which can provide safe and comfortable environments for work, communication and leisure. However, few studies have comprehensively focused on the relationship between housing space and ICT usage. The present study collects survey data in the Netherlands and uses a zero-inflated negative binomial regression to analyse the relationship. Results show that (1) houses located in highly or strongly urbanised area are positively related with the duration of teleservices and general ICT usage; (2) detached, semi-detached and town houses are positively related with the duration of telecommuting; (3) flats are positively related with the adoption of telecommuting, the duration of teleservices, and the adoption and duration of teleleisure; and (4) the number of rooms is positively related with the adoption of telecommuting and the duration of general ICT usage but negatively related with the duration of teleleisure. Persistent influx of migrants has altered the urban landscape in China. Compounding this has been the shifting geography of local population and jobs, consequential of the physical expansion of built-up areas and restructuring of the urban economy. Nowhere is more evident of such trends as in Shanghai, the country's premier metropolis and leading business hub. How has intra-urban residential geography of migrants and local population transformed over time? How are such patterns connected with changing economic and employment distribution? These are the driving questions of our research, rooted in our long-standing observations of the city's evolving urban structure. We present patterns of spatial restructuring at two different points of time: in 2000 and 2010, and the change during the decade. Here our primary purpose is to sort out important predictors affecting the residential locations of migrants and the local population, in the context of overall demographic and employment geography. While sharing a tendency to move outward and away from the urban core, they respond to distinctive calculus – residential amenities for the locals and job opportunities for migrants, a bifurcated trajectory emblematic of intensified stratification. • In spite of a historically compact urban form, Shanghai has experienced a continuous outward trajectory of expansion. • Residential dispersal is a byproduct of employment expansion in suburbs and a response to increasingly marketized land and housing sectors. • The presence of industrial establishments and provision of rental housing have a significant, positive influence on migrants' residential locations. • The locals are more sensitive to housing conditions, concentrating in areas with higher levers of amenities and circumventing those with industrial activities. • The bifurcation is emblematic of intensified stratification and indicative of additional risks for migrants. The issue of residential location segregation by income class has long been discussed and considered in the field of urban geography as a significant social problem. However, research analysing the effect of local commuting accessibility to residential locations by income class is limited. This study aims to reinterpret the classical theory of job-housing imbalance from a modern perspective using analytical methodology. A utility-based local accessibility index for commuting was estimated and accessibility was calculated considering the travel characteristics of households in each income class. The relationship between local commuting accessibility and the residential location of each income class household was analysed considering the spatial correlation between them. The findings showed that positive spatial correlations existed between local commuting accessibility and residential location of houses of all income classes, implying that all households, regardless of income class, are in areas with good access. In this article, we present a study of local governments in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania measuring public service quality and revisiting residential location choice. This study adopts "emergy" (spelled with an "m"), a relatively new unit of measuring energy quality, to quantify the quality of public service. The concept of neighborhood choice has evolved to incorporate distance to center, transportation modes and commute time, match between household income and housing price, availability of public services and education, and own-group preference by ethnic or socioeconomic status. Despite the quality of public service by local governments being identified a critical factor affecting residential location choice, it has received less attention because of the nebulous concept and immeasurable characteristics. The emergy analysis of a local government system allows for testing of incompatible units of a socio-economic phenomenon. This study confirms the conventional residential sorting theory that people tend to travel further for cheaper houses and for better education, but people do not travel further for a higher quality of hard infrastructure such as road network and maintenance. Despite the deplorable condition of slums, it still harbors most of the urban population and may continue to do so, especially in Africa where slum growth is on a par with urban growth. This is the case in Lagos, a megacity reportedly dominated by slum dwellers, with limited knowledge on residential choices of slum dwellers and its contribution to slum population growth. This study, therefore, investigated the movement pattern of slum dwellers, factors influencing the residential choices and reasons for the people to remain in the Lagos slums. Data was collected through questionnaires and focus group discussions in slums in Lagos. The findings show that movement to Lagos was the main cause of population growth in the slums. Furthermore, slums in Lagos serve as a sink and a final destination for slum dwellers. Also, the factors that attract most of the slum dwellers to the slums differ from those that made them wish to remain. Since the late 1980s, homeownership in China has rapidly increased, and along with it the phenomenon of second homes. While research on multiple homes in China has examined second homes' ownership and tenure choice, little is known about the usage and spatial location of second homes. Using the nationally representative data from the 2015 China Household Finance Survey, this paper aims at documenting and analyzing the occupancy, usage and location of second homes of urban households in China. About 20% of urban households in China own second homes. Their leading usages are vacancy, renting and helping relatives, with only small percentages used for weekday commuting and leisure. Second homes' usage is influenced by the household's life cycle, socioeconomic status, the homes' and regional characteristics, and it differs among commodity housing and policy-related housing. Second homes are more common in large cities and in heavily urbanized areas, and they tend to be in relative proximity to primary homes. Unlike mature housing markets in Western countries where second homes are used primarily for leisure and income-generation, multiple homeownership in urban China reflects both family life cycle and institutional constraints more so than leisure pursuit. • Second homes in China are in highly urbanized areas and close to primary homes. • Second homes in urban China reflect consumption needs and institutional constraints. • Second homes are used for vacancy, renting and by relatives, rather than leisure. • Second-homes' usage differs between commodity housing and policy-related housing. • Family life cycle, socioeconomic status, the home's and regional characteristics influence usage.
