Education is concerned with human resource development. The role of education in economic change of society through human resource development is very much significant in the developing countries. Development cannot be sustainable unless it is equitable. Today's development has people-centred approach emphasising the empowerment of people. Woman is the key to this development and empowerment of women is pre-requisite for creating an egalitarian society. Education can create a new outlook. It is a powerful device to change human nature in a desirable way. The process of education helps individual to know the self. It is education, which prepares them for full membership in the society. Changes brought about by education are permanent and transcendent in nature. Education determines the levels and well-being of people. Gender discrimination and patriarchal attitude which are being practiced for so many years have incapacitated women in such a way that they cannot stand alone unless a strong support is provided to them. Women of both urban and rural areas have realised the significance and importance of education to challenge the age-old domination and exploitation of patriarchal society. They have found education as a means towards empowerment which would ensure their participation in the decision-making in all walks of life. The present paper will try to highlight this changed behaviour of girl students, specifically in the higher education level, considering Gauhati University as the universe of study. The environmental threat to humanity due to unscientific and unhealthy disposal of waste is increasing day by day. Urban sprawl due to population growth combined with changing consumer habits have increased the per capita generation of waste over the years. This has made the task of Solid Waste Management even more challenging for Municipal Corporations. The key issues surrounding garbage collection and disposal are similar in major cities and towns of India, Guwahati being a typical example of the lot. Technology available in developed countries is hard to implement in India in this sector due to funds limitation, different demographic profile of users, general education and awareness level in the community regarding waste, cost of running sophisticated waste plants, associated infrastructure required to support the system and also the extent and character of the waste to be managed. Cities in developing countries hardly spend more than 0.5% of their per capita gross national productivity (GNP) on urban waste services, which covers only about one-third of overall cost. Under these stringent budgets and complex problems to deal with, it is vital to devise ways which would strike a balance between the cost effectiveness and the quality of the waste management process. Implementation of waste management with proper segregation and supporting technologies for processing the recyclables can go a long way in minimizing the energy consumed for manufacturing. The segregation process when done efficiently produces cleaner recyclables which has a better market value and lesser energy consumption in its life cycle from generation at source to a finished product and can be a sustainable solution to waste management. In this paper municipal waste collection at source using different types of waste receptacles have been experimented. A resident colony in Guwahati city was selected and 50 households were randomly selected for the study for 90 days. Two bin system and a designed segregation bin system were experimented. Data was compared using SPSS. It was found that the contamination level was low in the biodegradable and non biodegradable waste in the designed segregation bin system. It was also found that there was an improvement in the quantity of biodegradable and non biodegradable waste. The cause of serious effects and concern on the global environmental quality is the development of the urban environment through rapid industrial growth backed by increased and varied consumer preferences. Besides temperature, the urban environment affects many other climatologically parameters detrimental to life in planet. Saying this, Kamrup District is showing growth of small and medium industries which may impact on the environment leading ultimately to shrinkage of the spatial bases of diverse micro and macro ecosystems. The study is a multidisciplinary approach towards the understanding of coexistence of industry, pollution and its effects on environment and sustainability. Therefore the paper attempts to locate the manufacturing SMEs in Amingaon and Bamunimaidan Industrial estates in Kamrup district which may be correlated to ecology due to simultaneous release of large amounts of toxic liquid, solid and gaseous waste into the environment. These problems give rise to a host of complicated situations needing immediate attention and sustainable management. The study accounts for the application of environmental parameters and environmental accounting on balancing environment and industrial growth. It deals with sustainability of manufacturing organizations that can have positive impact on the society. Architecture, Engineering and Construction industry though incohesive, but is undergoing profound transformation by adopting Green Building guidelines. With roughly 17.2% of the world's total populace and an urban populace of 372 million (bigger than the whole US populace), India faces mammoth task. India has two programs: LEED-India and GRIHA which are in their nascent stages and need to be appraised. This study presents a brief background of Green Building evolution and an objective summary of LEED-India and GRIHA mapped to proven rating tools US-LEED and BREEAM. It also examines how structural impacts are addressed and how structural engineers, as being one of the stakeholders of Integrated Design Team, can contribute to assessments through sustainable construction.
