This paper aims at identifying oceanic regions outside the tropical Pacific, which may influence the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) through interannual modulation of equatorial Pacific winds. An Atmospheric General Circulation Model (AGCM) 7-members ensemble experiment forced by climatological sea surface temperature (hereafter, SST) in the tropical Pacific Ocean and observed interannually varying SST elsewhere produces ensemble-mean equatorial zonal wind stress interannual anomalies (ZWSA) over the equatorial Pacific. These ZWSA are largest during boreal winter in the western Pacific, and induce a ~0.5 °C response in the central Pacific during the following spring in a simple ocean model, that weakly but significantly correlates with the following ENSO peak amplitude. When correlated with global SST, the residual western equatorial Pacific ZWSA yield SST patterns that are reminiscent of ENSO teleconnections in the Indian, North and South Pacific, and Atlantic Oceans. We further design 20-members ensemble sensitivity experiments forced by typical SST patterns of the main climate modes for each of these regions, in order to identify regions that influence equatorial Pacific ZWSA most. In our experiments, only the Indian Ocean Basin-wide SST warming in late boreal winter produces a statistically significant ZWSA in the western equatorial Pacific, resulting in a weak but significant ~0.35 °C SST response in the central Pacific (i.e. ~35 % of the observed standard deviation) during the following spring, the season when the Bjerkness coupled feedback is particularly efficient. This paper hence agrees with previous studies, which suggest that ENSO-induced basin-wide SST signals in the Indian Ocean may contribute to the phase transition of ENSO. Our results suggest that studies exploring external influences on ENSO should adopt a global approach rather than focus on a specific region. Designing coupled model simulations would also allow investigating air-sea interactions-mediated teleconnection mechanisms, which we can't reproduce in our forced AGCM framework. In this paper the forecast skill provided by the tropical Pacific Sea Surface Temperature (SST) associated with El Niño and El Niño Modoki over seasonal precipitation in Colombia has been evaluated through a lagged singular value decomposition analysis. The seasonal rainfall in many parts of the country can be predicted with suitable skill using the SST with a lead of one to four seasons. The response of precipitation to different phases of El Niño or El Niño Modoki is consistent with the state of the atmospheric fields of vertical velocity and velocity potential. Winter presents the best results for the prediction model, explaining the greatest percentage of square covariance fraction between the SST and lagged precipitation anomalies. The predictive capacity of these variability modes of SST for rainfall in Colombia is comparable or even higher in some seasons, particularly in winter, than the SST ability to explain the behavior of the precipitation during coetaneous seasons. The forecast of seasonal precipitation in Colombia validated in this work could be useful for planning and managing natural water resources in some regions of the country, particularly for the driest season of the year. The El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) has profound impacts on weather patterns across the globe, yet there is no consensus on its response to global warming. Several modelling studies find a stronger ENSO in global warming scenarios, while other studies suggest ENSO weakening. Using a broad range of models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 (CMIP6) and four types of warming experiments, here we show that the majority of the models predict a stronger ENSO by century-end in Shared Social Pathway (SSP) experiments, and in idealized 1pctCO2 and abrupt 4xCO2 experiments. Several models, however, do predict no change or ENSO weakening, especially in the idealized experiments. Critically, the strongest forcing (abrupt-4xCO2) does not induce the strongest ENSO response, while differences between the models are much greater than those between warming scenarios. For the long-term response (over 1000 years) the models disagree even on the sign of change. Furthermore, changes in ENSO sea surface temperature (SST) variability are only modestly correlated with the tropical Pacific mean state change. The highest correlation for ENSO SST amplitude is found with the mean zonal SST gradient in the SSP5-8.5 experiment (R = − 0.58). In contrast, changes in ENSO rainfall variability correlate well with changes in the mean state, as well as with changes in ENSO SST variability. When evaluating the Bjerknes Stability Index for a subset of models, we find that it is not a reliable predictor of ENSO strengthening, as this index tends to predict greater stability with warming. We argue that the enhanced ENSO stability is offset by increases in atmospheric noise or/and potential nonlinear effects. However, a robust inter-model mechanism that can explain a stronger ENSO simulated with global warming is still lacking. Based on the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data, the COBE sea surface temperature (SST) and the GPCC precipitation, the influences of El Niño-South Oscillation (ENSO) on the variability of winter rainfall anomalies in Southeast China is analyzed under the synergistic effect of Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). Winter precipitation and atmospheric circulation of the years of IOD concurring with ENSO are compared with single IOD or ENSO, to reveal the mechanism of synergistic effects on the variability of winter rainfall anomalies in Southeast China. The results show that the correlation between IOD/ENSO and the winter precipitation in Southeast China has increased since 1980s. These correlations were significant in years of IOD and ENSO co-occurrence compared to years of IOD or ENSO only, which is mainly due to the lagged atmospheric thermal and dynamic responses to an IOD forcing in synergy with ENSO. The positive IOD (PIOD) events can trigger and modify the anticyclone to the east of India, which transports moisture from the tropical Indian Ocean to Southeast China. In addition, El Niño events can strengthen the abnormal anticyclone over Philippines in winter, which is conducive to maintain the water vapor channel from the tropical western Pacific to Southeast China. Information flow analysis shows that the causalities between IOD and ENSO were enhanced after 1980s, causing the significant increase in the frequency of winter abnormal precipitation in the years of IOD and ENSO concurrence. Furthermore, the higher frequency of PIOD with El Niño (compared to negative IOD with La Niña) attained a ratio of 2:1 after the 1980s, enhancing the Southeast China winter precipitation events associated with IOD and ENSO and the generation of interdecadal variability. This study is helpful to understand the mechanisms of winter precipitation changes in Southeast China, and to improve the forecast accuracy of winter extreme precipitation events. Although the impact of the extratropical Pacific signal on the El Niño–Southern Oscillation has attracted increasing concern, the impact of Southern Hemisphere Annular Mode (SAM)-related signals from outside the southern Pacific Basin on the equatorial sea temperature has received less attention. This study explores the lead correlation between the April–May (AM) SAM and central tropical Pacific sea temperature variability over the following three seasons. For the positive AM SAM case, the related simultaneous warm SST anomalies in the southeastern Indian Ocean favor significant regulation of vertical circulation in the Indian Ocean with anomalous ascending motion in the tropics. This can further enhance convection over the Marine Continent, which induces a significant horizontal Kelvin response and regulates the vertical Walker circulation. These two processes both result in the anomalous easterlies east of 130° E in the equatorial Pacific during AM. These easterly anomalies favor oceanic upwelling and eastward propagation of the cold water into the central Pacific. The cold water in turn amplifies the development of the easterly wind and further maintains the cold water into the boreal winter. The results presented here not only provide a possible link between extratropical climate variability in the Indian Ocean and climate variation in the equatorial Pacific, but also shed new light on the short-term prediction of tropical central Pacific sea temperature. In this study, we examined the temporal variations of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) prediction skill during 1958–2016 in the context of the evolution in the tropical Pacific subsurface ocean observing system. To examine the temporal variations of the seasonal prediction skill, spatial correlation skill (SCS) of the predicted SST anomalies (SSTA) in the tropical Pacific Ocean within 10oS-10oN and temporal correlation skill (TCS) of the area-averaged SSTA throughout the same basin for the four periods of 1958–1978, 1979–1994, 1995–2005 and 2006–2016 were evaluated. These periods correspond to low amount, first increase, medium amount and second increase of the subsurface ocean temperature observations. Our results show that the influence of the observing system is detectable in the skill increase—both in SCS and TCS metrics—during the period 1995–2005. However, the impact of the subsurface ocean observing system is difficult to quantify in the prediction skill metrics during 2006–2016. It is shown that SCS is determined to a large extent by the magnitude of the observed SSTA in the target month. There is visible skill increase in the TCS before and after 1979, but this appears to be the result of variations in the properties of the verifying SST. Thus, potential impacts of the observing system are masked by climate variations of SST at decadal time scales, which may be real or result of variations in the SST observing system. In particular, the multidecadal modulations of the tropical Pacific SST associated with the climate shifts in the late 1970s and the early 2000s have more significant influence on prediction skill than the changes in observing system. Understanding the interactions between the Pacific and other ocean basins during extreme phases of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is necessary for explaining its global climate impacts. Here climate model experiments are used to highlight a mechanism by which the characteristic warming of the Indian Ocean during peak El Niño months can cool North Africa and South Asia, an area encompassing over three billion people. It is found that warming of the Indian Ocean during extreme El Niño events leads to broader upper tropospheric geopotential height anomalies than would otherwise occur. This weakens the extratropical Rossby wave response initiated in the tropics and leads to higher pressure and reduced cloud forcing over North Africa and South Asia. Reanalysis data provides empirical support for this mechanism, although it is likely only to be prominent during strong El Niño events when Indian Ocean warming tends to be larger. Eastern equatorial Indian ocean (EEIO) is one of the most climatically sensitive regions in the global ocean, which plays a vital role in modulating Indian ocean dipole (IOD) and El Niño southern oscillation (ENSO). Here we present evidences for a paradoxical and perpetual lower co-variability between sea-surface temperature (SST) and air-temperature (Tair) indicating instantaneous thermal decoupling in the same region, where signals of the strongly coupled variability of SST anomalies and zonal winds associated with IOD originate at inter-annual time scale. The correlation minimum between anomalies of Tair and SST occurs in the eastern equatorial Indian ocean warm pool region (≈70°E-100°E, 5°S-5°N), associated with lower wind speeds and lower sensible heat fluxes. At sub-monthly and Madden-Julian oscillation time scales, correlation of both variables becomes very low. In above frequencies, precipitation positively contributes to the low correlation by dropping Tair considerably while leaving SST without any substantial instant impact. Precipitation is led by positive build up of SST and post-facto drop in it. The strong semi-annual response of SST to mixed layer variability and equatorial waves, with the absence of the same in the Tair, contributes further to the weak correlation at the sub-annual scale. The limited correlation found in the EEIO is mainly related to the annual warming of the region and ENSO which is hard to segregate from the impacts of IOD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two different flavors of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO, canonical east Pacific type and Modoki/central Pacific type) are reported in the recent decades and are found to influence the global climate in different ways. The success of a seasonal prediction system is dependent on its ability to capture these two ENSO flavors accurately, together with associated teleconnections. The present study analyses the ability of Climate Forecast System version 2 (CFSv2) in simulating the two El Niño flavors and their teleconnections. The study uses two versions of CFSv2 in which the atmospheric model horizontal resolutions are different (T126 at 100 km and T382 at 38 km) and are initialized from a calendar month, ranging from February to June. The canonical ENSO pattern is captured as prominent mode of tropical Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) by both resolutions of CFSv2. Even though the tri-polar structure of ENSO Modoki is simulated as second mode, it has some disagreement with observations. The canonical El Niño induced SST, rainfall and atmospheric circulation in the tropical Pacific in summer and fall seasons are comparable with observations in both models. Meanwhile, the teleconnections in the tropical Indian Ocean and Indian monsoon regions are close to observations in T382 only. Teleconnections associated with El Niño Modoki are proper in T382 hindcasts, in which SST bias in Indian Ocean is slightly warm and the cold bias in central Pacific is marginal (mainly for Feb IC hindcasts). The present study indicates that the distinction of ENSO flavors in summer is the major reason for the higher skill of Indian summer monsoon rainfall (ISMR) in CFSv2 T382 Feb IC hindcasts. However, teleconnections associated with two flavors of ENSO are not distinguishable in fall and winter seasons, even in higher resolution model due to the presence of strong cold SST bias in central Pacific and warm SST bias in extreme east Pacific. Thus present study confirms that, higher resolution CFSv2 is required to differentiate the flavors of ENSO and their teleconnections properly. Coupled general circulation models (CGCMs) simulate a diverse range of El Niño-Southern Oscillation behaviors. 'Double peaked' El Niño events-where two separate centers of positive sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies evolve concurrently in the eastern and western equatorial Pacific-have been evidenced in Coupled Model Intercomparison Project version 5 CGCMs and are without precedent in observations. The characteristic CGCM double peaked El Niño may be mistaken for a central Pacific warming event in El Niño composites, shifted westwards due to the cold tongue bias. In results from the Australian Community Climate and Earth System Simulator coupled model, we find that the western Pacific warm peak of the double peaked El Niño event emerges due to an excessive westward extension of the climatological cold tongue, displacing the region of strong zonal SST gradients towards the west Pacific. A coincident westward shift in the zonal current anomalies reinforces the western peak in SST anomalies, leading to a zonal separation between the warming effect of zonal advection (in the west Pacific) and that of vertical advection (in the east Pacific). Meridional advection and net surface heat fluxes further drive growth of the western Pacific warm peak. Our results demonstrate that understanding historical CGCM El Niño behaviors is a necessary precursor to interpreting projections of future CGCM El Niño behaviors, such as changes in the frequency of eastern Pacific El Niño events, under global warming scenarios. El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is the leading mode of interannual global climate variability, which in its essence is often described by the equatorial dynamics of the recharge oscillator with a fixed pattern. Here we explore the idea that ENSO can be simulated in a model with a fixed pattern of sea surface temperature variability following the recharge oscillator mechanism, which interacts with the thermodynamic red noise of a slab ocean. This model is capable of simulating the leading modes of sea surface temperature variability in the tropical Pacific in good agreement with the observations and most coupled general circulation models. ENSO dynamics, amplitude, seasonality, the structure of the leading patterns, its meridional extension, its variations in an eastern and central Pacific pattern and associated positive feedbacks are all influenced and simulated well by including the interaction of recharge oscillator and the thermodynamic coupling to the slab ocean model. We further point out that much of the ENSO diversity in the spatial structure is a reflection of this interaction. The variability of the Indian Ocean on interannual and decadal timescales is investigated in observations, coupled model simulation and model experiment. The Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) mode was specifically analyzed using a data-adaptive method. This study reveals one decadal mode and two interannual modes in the sea surface temperature (SST) of the IOD. The decadal mode in the IOD is associated with the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) of the North Pacific SST. The two interannual modes are related to the biennial and canonical components of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), consistent with previous studies. This study hypothesizes that the relation between the Indian Ocean and the North Pacific on decadal scale may be through the northerly winds from the western North Pacific. The long simulation of Community Climate System Model version 4 also indicates the presence of IOD modes associated with the decadal PDO and canonical ENSO modes. However, the model fails to simulate the biennial ENSO mode in the Indian Ocean. Previous studies suggest that North Pacific extratropical atmospheric variability influences ENSO via the seasonal footprinting mechanism (SFM). This study confirms that quadrapole sea surface temperature (SST) variability in the extratropical South Pacific triggered by mid-latitude South Pacific atmospheric variability may also have an additional influence on ENSO. The response of the evolution of the ENSO-related zonal wind and SST anomalies in the tropics to the South Pacific extratropical forcing is consistent with the SFM hypothesis. That is, the Pacific-South American (PSA) pattern of the South Pacific extratropical sea level pressure (SLP) anomalies imparts an SST footprint (i.e., a quadrapole SST pattern) onto the ocean during austral summer. This SST footprint subsequently forces the zonal wind anomalies along the equator in the following austral winter that ultimately result in ENSO events during the following austral summer via ocean-atmosphere coupling in the tropics. The present study demonstrates that the influences of extratropical atmospheric variability in the South Pacific and North Pacific on ENSO are different and relatively independent. It is possible that they may, together or separately, influence the occurrence of ENSO events, and the importance of the South Pacific forcing in initiating ENSO events is comparable with that of the North Pacific forcing. An empirical model was established to predict the Niño3.4 index based on the combined South Pacific and North Pacific signals, and results show that it can be used to produce skillful forecasts of the Niño3.4 index with a leading time of up to 1 year. The climate of a particular region is governed by factors that may be remote, such as the El Nino Southern Oscillation or local, such as topography. However, the daily weather characteristics of a region are controlled by the synoptic-scale atmospheric state. Therefore changes in the type, frequency, duration or intensity of particular synoptic states over a region would result in changes to the local weather and long-term climatology of the region. The relationship between synoptic-scale circulation and the rainfall response is examined for a 31-year period at two stations in different rainfall regimes in South Africa. Dominant rain-bearing synoptic circulations are identified for austral winter and summer as mid-latitude cyclones and convective systems respectively whereas no circulations are dominantly associated with spring and autumn rainfall. Over the 31-year period a statistically significant increase in the frequency of characteristic summer circulation modes is observed during summer, winter and spring. During autumn a statistically significant shift towards characteristically winter circulation modes is evident. Seasonal rainfall trends computed at each station corroborate those of the circulation data. Extreme rainfall is associated with particular circulation modes and trends in both circulation and station data show an earlier occurrence of extreme rainfall during the rainy season. Observations indicate that since the 1970s Equatorial Atlantic sea surface temperature (SST) variations in boreal summer tend to modulate El Niño in the following seasons, indicating that the Atlantic Ocean can have importance for predicting the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The cause of the change in the recent decades remains unknown. Here we show that in the Bergen Climate Model (BCM), a freshwater forced weakening of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) results in a strengthening of the relation between the Atlantic and the Pacific similar to that observed since the 1970s. During the weakening AMOC phase, SST and precipitation increase in the central Equatorial Atlantic, while the mean state of the Pacific does not change significantly. In the Equatorial Atlantic the SST variability has also increased, with a peak in variability in boreal summer. In addition, the characteristic timescales of ENSO variability is shifted towards higher frequencies. The BCM version used here is flux-adjusted, and hence Atlantic variability is realistic in contrast to in many other models. These results indicate that in the BCM a weakening AMOC can change the mean background state of the Tropical Atlantic surface conditions, enhancing Equatorial Atlantic variability, and resulting in a stronger relationship between the Tropical Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Atlantic and Pacific El Niño are the leading tropical oceanic variability phenomena at interannual timescales. Recent studies have demonstrated how the Atlantic Niño is able to influence on the dynamical processes triggering the development of the Pacific La Niña and vice versa. However, the stationarity of this interbasin connection is still controversial. Here we show for the first time that the Atlantic-Pacific Niños connection takes place at particular decades, coinciding with negative phases of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO). During these decades, the Atlantic-Pacific connection appears as the leading coupled covariability mode between Tropical Atlantic and Pacific interannual variability. The mode is defined by a predictor field, the summer Atlantic Sea Surface Temperature (SST), and a set of predictand fields which represent a chain of atmospheric and oceanic mechanisms to generate the Pacific El Niño phenomenon: alteration of the Walker circulation, surface winds in western Pacific, oceanic Kelvin wave propagating eastward and impacting on the eastern thermocline and changes in the Pacific SST by internal Bjerknes feedback. We suggest that the multidecadal component of the Atlantic acts as a switch for El Niño prediction during certain decades, putting forward the AMO as the modulator, acting through changes in the equatorial Atlantic convection and the equatorial Pacific SST variability.
