This paper investigates the process behind climate model biases, especially in rainfall, during the southwest (June to August; JJA) and northeast monsoon (December to February; DJF) seasons over the Philippines using the downscaled Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) simulations of the Southeast Asia Regional Climate Downscaling/Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment-Southeast Asia (SEACLID/CORDEX-SEA). Biases in the surface and near-surface climate are assessed over land in eastern (EastPH) and western (WestPH) Philippines using observation and reanalysis datasets. Results show that models with well-represented sea surface temperature (SST) provided better added values after downscaling. Although the CMIP5-driven models tend to overestimate both surface energy and water partitioning, simulations with well-represented SST have better surface energy partitions. In contrast to the reference simulation driven by ERA-Interim reanalysis, the CMIP5-driven simulations tend to underestimate (overestimate) moisture flux convergence during the DJF (JJA) season, which might have contributed to the overall underestimation (overestimation) of rainfall in this season. Further investigation along a vertical transect shows the differences in governing mechanisms for each season. During DJF (JJA) season, the simulation with underestimated (overestimated) SST, near-surface air temperature, and mixing ratio results in underestimated (overestimated) rainfall over EastPH (WestPH). In addition, the CMIP5-driven models were found to overestimate low-level winds, which may have induced the deep convection regardless of season, suggesting the role of low-level winds in the convection scheme used in RegCM4 aside from topography and land cover. More than 85% of the Ethiopian population's livelihood depends on rain-fed agriculture. Therefore, accurate climate estimation is quite useful to improve food security. However, the poor spatial resolution of satellite open access Outgoing Long-wave Radiation (OLR) data and the complicated relationship with the temperature and precipitation over variable topography features, the climate estimation is below the satisfactory level. Hence, to address this problem, this paper aimed to model OLR based on moisture parameters related to the air temperature in Ethiopia. European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) and satellite data from 1981 to 2020 has been used to develop a new OLR model. The atmospheric moisture budget equation was applied for the new OLR mode development. The results indicated that the seasonal variation moisture coefficient (α) for winter, spring, summer, and autumn is found 0.99, − 0.29, 0.91, and 0.98 m3w−1 which is satisfied the model requirement. During winter, spring, summer, and autumn, the average value of OLR are found 269.60, 246.10, 247.90, and 255.60 Wm−2 from satellite direct observation respectively; while from the developed model is found at 268.79, 244.01, 248.97 and 254.93 Wm−2 respectively. Based on error matrices the developed mode is well agreed with satellite direct observation at a specific point and it is helpful to estimate OLR in the required spatial resolution. Generally the increment of the local moisture which is decreased OLR and increases the air temperature. Air temperature variability and prediction are important considering the potential implications on human health, water resource management, agriculture and land-atmosphere interaction. In this paper, we investigate the delayed influence of El Niño on spring Surface Air Temperature (SAT) variability over India using observations and assess its predictability in coupled climate models. Analysis suggests that El Niño, at its decaying phase, exerts a strong influence on the spring SAT over Southern Peninsular India (SPI). This warming is mainly induced by an anomalous anticyclone, which extends from the Western North Pacific (WNP) region to the SPI. The anomalous anticyclone-induced downdraft reduces the cloud cover and increases incoming shortwave radiation at surface, which in turn causes a dry atmospheric column and dry soil moisture over this region. As a result of this decreased soil moisture, latent heat flux into atmosphere reduces and enhances sensible heat transfer, further contributing to dry soil moisture. Both dry soil moisture and anomalous anticyclone contributes to enhanced SAT over SPI region. It is found that 6 years out of the top 10 warmest years over the SPI region correspond to the decaying phase of El Niño, suggesting the importance of the present study. It is also found that the intense SAT warming over SPI aids in increasing frequencies of Discomfort Index hours (exceeding 28 and 30 °C in a day) and the Universal Thermal Climate Index during El Niño decaying spring years. Further, we have examined the predictability of the spring SAT during decaying El Niño years based on the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Climate Center (APCC) models. It is noted that most of the APCC models reasonably predicted the spatial distribution of warm SAT over India during the El Niño decaying spring season at 1 and 3 month lead. In recent years, the winter surface air temperature (SAT) anomaly over North American midlatitudes shows a "warm west/cold east" (WWCE) dipole pattern with warm (cold) extremes occurring in the west (east) of North America. In this paper, the Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) condition linked to the WWCE SAT dipole is investigated. It is found that the winter WWCE dipole can be crudely considered as being a result of the winter mean of sub-seasonal WWCE events. While the sub-seasonal WWCE dipole is related to the positive Pacific North American pattern (PNA+), the impact of the PNA+ on the WWCE dipole depends on the different type of El Niño SST pattern and the phase of Pacific decadal Oscillation (PDO). For a Central-Pacific (CP) type El Niño, the positive (negative) height anomaly center of PNA+ is located in the western (eastern) North America to cause a strong WWCE dipole, though the positive PDO favors the WWCE dipole. In contrast, the WWCE dipole is suppressed under an Eastern-Pacific (EP) type El Niño because the anticyclonic anomaly of the PNA+ dominates the whole North America. Moreover, the physical cause of why different types of El Niño influence PNA+ is further examined. It is found that different types of El Niño can significantly influence the midlatitude location of PNA+ through changing North Pacific midlatitude westerly winds due to changes in the Pacific Hadley cell. For the CP-type El Niño, the eastward migration of PNA+ is suppressed to favor its anticyclonic (cyclonic) anomaly appearing in the western (eastern) North America due to reduced midlatitude westerly winds via weakened Pacific Hadley cell. But for the EP-type El Niño, midlatitude westerly wind is intensified to cause the midlatitude anticyclonic anomaly of the PNA+ appearing over the whole North America due to enhanced Pacific Hadley cell. In this paper, the synergistic effect of the preceding winter positive Northern Hemisphere annular mode (pNAM) and spring negative tropical North Atlantic (nTNA) sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) on spring extreme cold events in the mid-high latitudes of East Asia (MHEA) is investigated. The results show that the co-occurrence of the two factors is unfavorable for extreme cold events during spring in the MHEA via the snow cover and atmospheric bridges. Over the Atlantic, the spring nTNA SSTA can lead to an atmospheric response that is similar to the North Atlantic Oscillation, which enhances the persistence of the pNAM and in turn amplifies the negative spring Eurasian snow cover extent (EASCE) anomaly caused by the preceding winter pNAM. Meanwhile, the spring EASCE is closely related to the spring MHEA anomalous anticyclone. In addition to storing its signal in the spring EASCE, the spring nTNA SSTA can also lead to the spring MHEA anomalous anticyclone via the eastward Rossby wave train. The evidence shows that the Rossby wave energy can propagate eastward to the MHEA as a result of the enhanced negative spring EASCE anomaly and Rossby wave induced by the spring nTNA SSTA, and the two factors have an obvious synergistic effect on the spring MHEA anomalous anticyclone. This anomalous MHEA anticyclone becomes a barrier that can hinder the intrusion of cold air from the polar region and can increase the thickness of the atmospheric layer. The anomalous sinking motion of the spring MHEA anomalous anticyclone can also lead to an increase in net radiation received at the surface and increase the air temperature through the vertical motion of air. The southerly wind over the west side of the spring MHEA anomalous anticyclone leads to horizontal warm advection. All of the above processes favor an increase in air temperature and dampen extreme cold events, implying the synergistic effect of the preceding winter pNAM and spring nTNA SSTA on spring extreme cold events in the MHEA. Previous studies have reported significant uncertainty in the relationship between El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the winter surface air temperature (SAT) over central North America (NA). This paper uses reanalysis data and statistical methods to investigate the possible modulation effect of the Victoria mode (VM) during the preceding spring on the winter ENSO–SAT relationship. The correlation between ENSO and the winter SAT over central NA was found to be significantly positive during the positive VM phase. However, this significant correlation is almost absent during the negative VM phase. Further analysis revealed that the zonal location of the sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTA) over the tropical Pacific is an essential aspect of this VM modulation. During the positive VM phase, the dominant positive SSTA in the central-eastern tropical Pacific contribute to the formation of the negative phase of the North Pacific Oscillation (NPO)-like teleconnection, which further enhances the anomalous southerly winds and SAT over central NA. In contrast, during the negative VM phase, the Aleutian low-like atmospheric response induced by the central tropical Pacific SSTA is limited to the central North Pacific, which has a limited effect on the variation of the central NA SAT. The VM modulation mechanism is shown to be well reproduced by historical simulations of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6. Our results suggest that, despite the uncertainty associated with the ENSO–SAT connection, ENSO may provide prediction skills for the winter SAT over central NA during the positive VM phase. The global mean surface temperature cooled slightly in the mid-twentieth century despite a continuous increase in greenhouse gas concentrations. The cooling was strongest in the Northern Hemisphere mid-latitudes, while the Southern Hemisphere mid-latitudes experienced moderate warming. This apparent contradiction is often attributed to internal multi-decadal variability originating from Pacific and Atlantic ocean-atmosphere interactions. Given the rapid increase of industrial activities in North America and Europe during that period, it is also plausible that anthropogenic aerosol (AA) emissions (as an external forcing) contributed to the stronger Northern Hemisphere cooling. This paper aims to quantify the contributions of AA and decadal variability to the 1948–1978 cooling. We analyzed the latitudinal temperature trend asymmetry in 60° S–60° N throughout the troposphere, using multiple reanalysis datasets and the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 5 (CMIP5) multi-model ensemble that bears significant similarity with the observed patterns. We show that both AA increase and the North Atlantic Variability Index (NAVI) transition into its negative phase are the major contributors to the latitudinal asymmetry of cooling. At the surface level, based on the horizontal pattern correlation method, AA and NAVI have similar contribution fractions (20 vs. 16%), but the contribution fraction of AA is much larger at 500 hPa (55 vs. 8%). Attributions based on vertical pattern correlation and latitudinal gradient show consistent results. Natural forcings (NAT) also contribute to the cooling asymmetry during mid-20C, but with a much smaller impact compared to AA and NAVI. Therefore, we argue that previous studies that mostly focused on surface variables may have underestimated the role of AA in the mid-twentieth-century climate change. Climate change leads to a more frequent occurrence of hot days (HDs) and hot nights (HNs). The consecutive occurrence of HDs and HNs (COHs) is often used as a measure of the persistence of an extremely hot spell. Nonetheless, the combined effect of air temperature and relative humidity on the changing COHs has never been studied. In this paper, we use an ensemble of global climate models and multiple thermal indices to robustly examine the combined effect of air temperature and relative humidity on COHs globally on an hourly basis. Our findings reveal that COHs show an increasing trend in the future and a strong latitudinal gradient increasing from high latitudes to the equator. Compared to COHs based on air temperature, the frequency of COHs based on perceived temperature is amplified by the combined effects of high temperature and humidity for both boreal and austral summers. To investigate the underlying mechanisms, we examine two different diurnal temperature ranges (DTRs), derived from air temperature and perceived temperature, for their corresponding types of COHs. Both DTRs are projected to increase in the future relative to the historical period from 1980 to 2004, but the DTR changes derived from perceived temperature are consistently larger than those derived from air temperature. Due to the nonlinearity in thermal indices, the perceived temperature in HDs and HNs rising faster than air temperature leads to a larger increase in perceived COHs. Over the last century, the global mean surface air temperature (SAT) has experienced two periods of warming slowdown (hiatuses), namely 1940–1975 and 1998–2012, as well as showing well-defined interdecadal oscillations. Previous studies have focused mainly on the most recent hiatus, and little is known about the period between 1940 and 1975. From the point of view of the sea surface temperature (SST), there are two aspects of interest; i.e., the climatological SST and SST variability. In this paper, observational and modelling evidence is used to show that, compared with the climatological SST, SST variability has been the main cause of the slowdown in rate of increase in SAT since 1940. In addition, the observational data and simulation results show that SST variability had a greater impact on the slowdown in rate of increase in SAT from 1940 to 1975 (− 1.2 × 10−3 °C/year) than from 1998 to 2012 (− 5.7 × 10−3 °C/year). The SAT change over the period 1940–1975 (1.0 × 10−4 °C/year) was less affected by the climatological SST forcing experiment than that over the period 1998–2012 (− 5.0 × 10−4 °C/year). Comparing with 1940–1975, the SAT change over the period 1998–2012 was much affected by the global SAT long-term warming. The distributions of wind stress and atmospheric pressure both indicate that, although the eastern Pacific Ocean played an important role in influencing the global SAT trend between 1998 and 2012, it made little contribution to changes in global SAT between 1940 and 1975. In addition, from the perspective of seasonality, the interdecadal variation of SAT over these two periods was a seasonally dependent phenomenon. This paper reports findings from a diagnostic and modeling analysis that investigates the impacts of the boreal late-spring soil moisture anomalies over North Eurasia on the summer rainfall over northern East Asia (NEA). The soil moisture in May from the Kara-Laptev Sea coasts to Central Siberian Plateau is found to be negatively correlated with the summer rainfall from Mongolia to Northeast China. The atmospheric circulation anomalies associated with the anomalously dry soil are characterized by a pressure dipole with the high-pressure center located over North Eurasia and low-pressure center over NEA, where an anomalous water vapor convergence occurs, favoring rainfall formation. Diagnoses and modeling experiments demonstrate that the effects of the spring lower soil moisture over North Eurasia may persist into the following summer, then increase the low-level air temperature at higher latitudes through modulating local surface latent and sensible heat fluxes, and effectively reduce the meridional temperature gradient north of NEA. The weakened temperature gradient could induce the decreased vertical shear of zonal wind and generate an anomalously cyclonic center over NEA by affecting the baroclinicity around 60° N, associated with a favorable condition of local synoptic activity to increase rainfall. The above relationships and mechanisms are vice versa for the prior wetter North Eurasian soil and decreased NEA rainfall. These findings suggest that the soil moisture anomalies at higher latitudes may act as a new precursor providing an additional predictability source for better predicting the summer rainfall in NEA. Observational analysis and climate modeling efforts concur that the frequency, intensity, and duration of heatwaves will increase as the Earth's mean climate shifts towards warmer temperatures. While the impacts and mechanisms of heatwaves have been well explored, extreme temperatures over Florida are generally understudied. This paper sheds light on Floridian heatwaves by exploring 13 years of daily data from surface observations and high-resolution WRF climate simulations for the same timeframe. The characteristics of the current and future heatwaves under the RCP8.5 high emissions scenario for 2070-2099 were then investigated. Results show a tripling in the frequency, and greater than a sixfold increase in the mean duration of heatwaves over Florida when the current standard of heatwaves was used. The intensity of heatwaves also increased by 4-6 °C due to the combined effects of rising mean temperatures and a 1-2 °C increase attributed to the flattening of the temperature distribution. Since Florida's atmospheric boundary layer is rich in moisture and heatwaves could further increase the moisture content in the lower troposphere, the relationship between heatwaves and extreme precipitation was also explored in both the current and future climate. As expected, rainfall during a heatwave event was anomalously low, but it quickly recovered to normal within 3 days after the passage of a heatwave. Finally, the late 21st-century climate could witness a slight decrease in the mean precipitation over Florida, accompanied by heavier heatwave-associated extreme precipitation events over central and southern Florida. The sawtooth-patterned glacial-interglacial cycles in the Earth's atmospheric temperature are a well-known, though poorly understood phenomenon. Pinpointing the relevant mechanisms behind these cycles will not only provide insights into past climate dynamics, but also help predict possible future responses of the Earth system to changing CO 2 levels. Previous work on this phenomenon suggests that the most important underlying mechanisms are interactions between marine biological production, ocean circulation, temperature and dust. So far, interaction directions (i.e., what causes what) have remained elusive. In this paper, we apply Convergent Cross-Mapping (CCM) to analyze paleoclimatic and paleoceanographic records to elucidate which mechanisms proposed in the literature play an important role in glacial-interglacial cycles, and to test the directionality of interactions. We find causal links between ocean ventilation, biological productivity, benthic δ 18 O and dust, consistent with some but not all of the mechanisms proposed in the literature. Most importantly, we find evidence for a potential feedback loop from ocean ventilation to biological productivity to climate back to ocean ventilation. Here, we propose the hypothesis that this feedback loop of connected mechanisms could be the main driver for the glacial-interglacial cycles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Europe and in particular its southern part are expected to undergo serious climate changes during summer in response to anthropogenic forcing, with large surface warming and decrease in precipitation. Yet, serious uncertainties remain, especially over central and western Europe. Several mechanisms have been suggested to be important in that context but their relative importance and possible interplays are still not well understood. In this paper, the role of soil-atmosphere interactions, cloud-temperature interactions and land-sea warming contrast in summer European climate change and how they interact are analyzed. Models for which evapotranspiration is strongly limited by soil moisture in the present climate are found to tend to simulate larger future decrease in evapotranspiration. Models characterized by stronger present-day anti-correlation between cloud cover and temperature over land tend to simulate larger future decrease in cloud cover. Large model-to-model differences regarding land-sea warming contrast and its impacts are also found. Warming over land is expected to be larger than warming over sea, leading to a decrease in continental relative humidity and precipitation because of the discrepancy between the change in atmospheric moisture capacity over land and the change in specific humidity. Yet, it is not true for all the models over our domain of interest. Models in which evapotranspiration is not limited by soil moisture and with a weak present-day anti-correlation between cloud cover and temperature tend to simulate smaller land surface warming. In these models, change in specific humidity over land is therefore able to match the continental increase in moisture capacity, which leads to virtually no change in continental relative humidity and smaller precipitation change. Because of the physical links that exist between the response to anthropogenic forcing of important impact-related climate variables and the way some mechanisms are simulated in the context of present-day variability, this study suggests some potentially useful metrics to reduce summer European climate change uncertainties. This paper presents an evaluation of climate simulations produced by the Brazilian Global Atmospheric Model version 1.2 (BAM-1.2) of the Center for Weather Forecast and Climate Studies (CPTEC). The model was run over the 1975–2017 period at two spatial resolutions, corresponding to ~ 180 and ~ 100 km, both with 42 vertical levels, following most of the Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project (AMIP) protocol. In this protocol, observed sea surface temperatures (SSTs) are used as boundary conditions for the atmospheric model. Four ensemble members were run for each of the two resolutions. A series of diagnostics was computed for assessing the model's ability to represent the top of the atmosphere (TOA) radiation, atmospheric temperature, circulation and precipitation climatological features. The representation of precipitation interannual variability, El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) precipitation teleconnections, the Madden and Julian Oscillation (MJO) and daily precipitation characteristics was also assessed. The model at both resolutions reproduced many observed temperature, atmospheric circulation and precipitation climatological features, despite several identified biases. The model atmosphere was found to be more transparent than the observations, leading to misrepresentation of cloud-radiation interactions. The net cloud radiative forcing, which produces a cooling effect on the global mean climate at the TOA, was well represented by the model. This was found to be due to the compensation between both weaker longwave cloud radiative forcing (LWCRF) and shortwave cloud radiative forcing (SWCRF) in the model compared to the observations. The model capability to represent inter-annual precipitation variability at both resolutions was found to be linked to the adequate representation of ENSO teleconnections. However, the model produced weaker than observed convective activity associated with the MJO. Light daily precipitation over the southeast of South America and other climatologically similar regions was diagnosed to be overestimated, and heavy daily precipitation underestimated by the model. Increasing spatial resolution helped to slightly reduce some of the diagnosed biases. The performed evaluation identified model aspects that need to be improved. These include the representation of polar continental surface and sea ice albedo, stratospheric ozone, low marine clouds, and daily precipitation features, which were found to be larger and last longer than the observed features. This paper aims to identify those regions within the South American continent where the Regional Climate Models (RCMs) have the potential to add value (PAV) compared to their coarser-resolution global forcing. For this, we used a spatial-scale filtering method based on the wavelet theory to distinguish the regional climatic signal present in atmospheric surface fields from observed data (CPC and TRMM) and 6 RCM simulations belonging to the CORDEX Project. The wavelet used for filtering was Haar wavelet, but a comparative analysis with Daubechies 4 wavelet indicated that meteorological fields or regional indices were not very sensitive to the wavelet selected. Once the longer wavelengths were filtered, we focused on analyzing the spatial variability of extreme rainfall and the spatiotemporal variability of maximum and minimum surface air temperature on a daily basis. The results obtained suggest essential differences in the spatial distribution of the small-scale signal of extreme precipitation between TRMM and regional models, together with a large dispersion between models. While TRMM and CPC register a large signal throughout the continent, the RCMs place it over the Andes Cordillera and some over tropical South America. PAV signal for surface air temperature was found over the Andes Cordillera and the Brazilian Highlands, which are regions characterized by complex topography, and also on the coasts of the continent. The signal came specially from the small-scale stationary component. The transient part is much smaller than the stationary one, except over la Plata Basin where they are of the same order of magnitude. Also, the RCMs and CPC showed a large spread between them in representing this transient variability. The results confirm that RCMs have the potential to add value in the representation of extreme precipitation and the mean surface temperature in South America. However, this condition is not applicable throughout the whole continent but is particularly relevant in those terrestrial regions where the surface forcing is strong, such as the Andes Cordillera or the coasts of the continent. A sequence of ensemble forecasts permits the estimation of the "predictable" and "unpredictable" components of the forecasts and hence the predictability of the system. Predictability is a feature of a physical and/or mathematical system which characterizes its "ability to be predicted" as measured, for instance, by the rate at which initially close states separate. Modern climate models may be used to predict climate evolution on seasonal to decadal timescales and they may also be used to estimate predictability. The predictability in this case measures the model's ability to predict its own evolution and, for a well behaved climate model, this may be a useful measure of the predictability of the climate system itself. Forecast skill, where forecasts are compared to observations, indicates a forecast system's "ability to predict" the evolution of the climate system. Common measures of skill include correlation, mean square error and mean square skill score. When the model is used to predict its own evolution, rather than the evolution of the actual climate system, the same measures of skill may be used but are then predictability measures and termed measures of "potential skill". The expectation is that the model's skill in predicting its own evolution will be greater than its ability to predict the actual evolution of the system in the face of observational uncertainty and model deficiencies. The further expectation is that the differences between potential and actual skill can give an indication of where and to what extent there is the potential for improvement in forecast skill. Predictability studies may be undertaken with available models but it may not be immediately obvious which statistical conditions are necessary if potential skill is to be a reasonable estimate of attainable skill. The purpose of this paper is to investigate and illustrate the spatial and temporal behaviour of the predictable and unpredictable components of surface air temperature in a decadal prediction experiment and to discuss some of the implications for predictability studies and for analyzing model behaviour. Formal relationships between potential, actual, and attainable skill are developed which, however, provide only modest constraints on model results if they are to be used to infer predictability. The results of various scalings of the forecasts on potential and actual skill and their relationship are also considered. Differences in the actual and potential forecast skill between models and/or model versions can be partitioned into components associated with known statistics as a guide to forecast improvement. A comprehensive performance assessment of the empirical-statistical downscaling (ESD) technique named EPISODES is presented. Pertaining evaluation analyses consist of multifarious validation experiments as well as various comparisons of EPISODES' projections with those of three RCMs and two ESD methods based on the same GCM scenarios driven by two distinct representative concentration pathways (RCPs). EPISODES combines the downscaling of GCM simulations with a follow-up production of synthetic local time series. EPISODES is a comparably simple, computationally rather inexpensive technique, providing multi-variable and multi-site data that are suitable for being merged in an ensemble of RCM projections. This allows (e.g. for different RCPs) the compilation of large multi member ensembles derived from various GCM simulations via both main downscaling strategies (ESD and RCMs). Evaluation experiments reveal satisfying degrees of compliance between various results generated by EPISODES and observations. The grid cell bias for yearly values, for instance, is mostly less than 0.1∘C for temperature and 10% for precipitation totals. Recorded temperature values and precipitation totals corresponding to their 1st and the 99th percentiles are well represented by EPISODES too. Comparisons of various climate change signals derived by EPISODES and other downscaling approaches, present high levels of agreement as well. Using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, this paper analyzes the spatiotemporal features of heat waves in 20-year regional climate simulations over East Asia, and investigates the capability of WRF to reproduce observational heat waves in China. Within the framework of the Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX), the WRF model is driven by the ERA-Interim (ERAIN) reanalysis, and five continuous simulations are conducted from 1989 to 2008. Of these, four runs apply the interior spectral nudging (SN) technique with different wavenumbers, nudging variables and nudging coefficients. Model validations show that WRF can reasonably reproduce the spatiotemporal features of heat waves in China. Compared with the experiment without SN, the application of SN is effectie on improving the skill of the model in simulating both the spatial distributions and temporal variations of heat waves of different intensities. The WRF model shows advantages in reproducing the synoptic circulations with SN and therefore yields better representations for heat wave events. Besides, the SN method is able to preserve the variability of large-scale circulations quite well, which in turn adjusts the extreme temperature variability towards the observation. Among the four SN experiments, those with stronger nudging coefficients perform better in modulating both the spatial and temporal features of heat waves. A significant slowdown in the near-surface wind speed (SWS) due to combined effects of the driving and drag forces of the atmosphere has been demonstrated in different regions in the globe. The drag force includes two sources: the friction force between the underlying surface and the bottom of the atmosphere, which is the external friction force (EFF), and the vertical exchange of the horizontal momentum induced by turbulent mixing, which is the turbulent friction force (TFF). In this paper, we propose a diagnostic method to separate the effects of the EFF and the TFF on long-term changes in the SWS over the Eastern China Plain (ECP) region from 1981 to 2010. The results show that the TFF could have caused an increase of 0.5 ± 0.2 m s− 1 in the SWS over the ECP region in the past 30 years and the TFF showed an increasing influence of 0.17 m s− 1 decade− 1. In contrast, the EFF distinctly decreased the SWS by an average of − 1.1 ± 0.4 m s− 1 and presented a significant decreasing trend of − 0.36 m s− 1 decade− 1. The effect of EFF is the main inducer of the observed regional long-term decrease of the SWS, which is in accordance with the distinct land use and cover change (LUCC) occurring in the ECP region in recent decades. Furthermore, the effects of the EFF and TFF on the changes in the SWS are more significant in large cities than those in small cities. The TFF effect can accelerate the SWS, with means of 0.5 ± 0.2 and 0.4 ± 0.2 m s− 1 in large and small cities, respectively. This paper shows demonstrable improvement in the global seasonal climate predictability of boreal summer (at zero lead) and fall (at one season lead) seasonal mean precipitation and surface temperature from a two-tiered seasonal hindcast forced with forecasted SST relative to two other contemporary operational coupled ocean-atmosphere climate models. The results from an extensive set of seasonal hindcasts are analyzed to come to this conclusion. This improvement is attributed to: (1) The multi-model bias corrected SST used to force the atmospheric model. (2) The global atmospheric model which is run at a relatively high resolution of 50 km grid resolution compared to the two other coupled ocean-atmosphere models. (3) The physics of the atmospheric model, especially that related to the convective parameterization scheme. The results of the seasonal hindcast are analyzed for both deterministic and probabilistic skill. The probabilistic skill analysis shows that significant forecast skill can be harvested from these seasonal hindcasts relative to the deterministic skill analysis. The paper concludes that the coupled ocean-atmosphere seasonal hindcasts have reached a reasonable fidelity to exploit their SST anomaly forecasts to force such relatively higher resolution two tier prediction experiments to glean further boreal summer and fall seasonal prediction skill. The study of Equatorial Undercurrent (EUC) has attracted a broad attention in recent years due to its strong response and feedback to the Indian Ocean Dipole. In this paper, we first produce a high-quality simulation of three-dimensional temperature, salinity and zonal current simulation from 1982 to 2014, using a high-resolution ocean general circulation model. On this basis, with two sensitivity experiments, we investigate the role of temperature and salinity anomalies in driving and enhancing the EUC during the positive IOD events by examining the variation of the EUC seasonal cycle and diagnosing the zonal momentum budget along the equatorial Indian Ocean. Our results show that during January-March, the EUC can appear along the entire equatorial Indian Ocean in all years, but during August-November, the EUC can appear and reach the eastern Indian Ocean only during the positive IOD events. The zonal momentum budget analysis indicates that the pressure gradient force contributes most to the variation of the eastward acceleration of zonal currents in the subsurface. During the positive IOD events, strong negative subsurface temperature anomalies exist in the eastern Indian Ocean, with negative surface salinity anomalies in the central and eastern Indian Ocean, resulting in a large pressure gradient force to drive EUC during the August-November. Further, the results of two sensitivity experiments indicate that the temperature anomalies significantly impact the pressure gradient force, playing a leading role in driving the EUC, while the surface salinity anomalies can secondarily help to intensify the eastward EUC through increasing the zonal density gradient in the eastern Indian Ocean and impacting the vertical momentum advection in the subsurface. This paper presents a ten-member ensemble of twentieth century Ocean ReAnalyses called ORA-20C. ORA-20C assimilates temperature and salinity profiles and is forced by the ECMWF twentieth century atmospheric reanalysis (ERA-20C) over the 1900-2010 period. This study attempts to identify robust signals of ocean heat content change in ORA-20C and detect contamination by model errors, initial condition uncertainty, surface fluxes and observing system changes. It is shown that ORA-20C trends and variability in the first part of the century result from the surface fluxes and model drift towards a warmer mean state and weak meridional overturning circulation. The impact of the observing system in correcting the mean state causes the deceleration of the warming trend and alters the long-term climate signal. The ensemble spread reflects the long-lasting memory of the initial conditions and the convergence of the system to a solution compatible with surface fluxes, the ocean model and observational constraints. Observations constrain the ocean heat uptake trend in the last decades of the twentieth century, which is similar to trend estimations from the post-satellite era. An ocean heat budget analysis attributes ORA-20C heat content changes to surface fluxes in the first part of the century. The heat flux variability reflects spurious signals stemming from ERA-20C surface fields, which in return result from changes in the atmospheric observing system. The influence of the temperature assimilation increments on the heat budget is growing with time. Increments control the most recent ocean heat uptake signals, highlighting imbalances in forced reanalysis systems in the ocean as well as in the atmosphere. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study applies three widely used land models (SSiB, CLM, and Noah-MP) coupled in a regional climate model to quantitatively assess their skill in preserving the imposed ± 5 °C anomalies on the initial land surface and subsurface temperature (LST/SUBT) and generating the 2-m air temperature (T2m) anomalies over Tibetan Plateau (TP) during May–August. The memory of the LST/SUBT initial anomalies (surface/soil memory) is defined as the first time when time series of the differences in daily LST/SUBT cross the zero line during the simulation, with the unit of days. The memory of the T2m anomalies (T2m memory) is defined in the same way. The ensemble results indicate that the simulated soil memory generally increases with soil depth, which is consistent with the results based on the observations with statistic methods. And the soil memory is found to change rapidly with depth above ~ 0.6–0.7 m and vary slowly below it. The land models have fairly long soil memories, with the regional mean 1.0-m soil memory generally longer than 60 days. However, they have short T2m memory, with the regional means generally below 20 days. This may bring a big challenge to use the LST/SUBT approach on the sub-seasonal to seasonal (S2S) prediction. Comparison between the three land models shows that CLM and Noah-MP have longer soil memory at the deeper layers (> ~ 0.05 m) while SSiB has longer T2m/surface memories and near-surface (≤ ~ 0.05 m) soil memory. As a result, it is difficult to say which land model is optimal for the application of the LST/SUBT approach on the S2S prediction. The T2m/surface/soil memories are various over TP, distinct among the land models, and different between the + 5 °C and − 5 °C experiment, which can be explained by both changes in the surface heat fluxes and variances in the hydrological processes over the plateau. Decadal predictions have a high profile in the climate science community and beyond, yet very little is known about their skill. Nor is there any agreed protocol for estimating their skill. This paper proposes a sound and coordinated framework for verification of decadal hindcast experiments. The framework is illustrated for decadal hindcasts tailored to meet the requirements and specifications of CMIP5 (Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 5). The chosen metrics address key questions about the information content in initialized decadal hindcasts. These questions are: (1) Do the initial conditions in the hindcasts lead to more accurate predictions of the climate, compared to un-initialized climate change projections? and (2) Is the prediction model's ensemble spread an appropriate representation of forecast uncertainty on average? The first question is addressed through deterministic metrics that compare the initialized and uninitialized hindcasts. The second question is addressed through a probabilistic metric applied to the initialized hindcasts and comparing different ways to ascribe forecast uncertainty. Verification is advocated at smoothed regional scales that can illuminate broad areas of predictability, as well as at the grid scale, since many users of the decadal prediction experiments who feed the climate data into applications or decision models will use the data at grid scale, or downscale it to even higher resolution. An overall statement on skill of CMIP5 decadal hindcasts is not the aim of this paper. The results presented are only illustrative of the framework, which would enable such studies. However, broad conclusions that are beginning to emerge from the CMIP5 results include (1) Most predictability at the interannual-to-decadal scale, relative to climatological averages, comes from external forcing, particularly for temperature; (2) though moderate, additional skill is added by the initial conditions over what is imparted by external forcing alone; however, the impact of initialization may result in overall worse predictions in some regions than provided by uninitialized climate change projections; (3) limited hindcast records and the dearth of climate-quality observational data impede our ability to quantify expected skill as well as model biases; and (4) as is common to seasonal-to-interannual model predictions, the spread of the ensemble members is not necessarily a good representation of forecast uncertainty. The authors recommend that this framework be adopted to serve as a starting point to compare prediction quality across prediction systems. The framework can provide a baseline against which future improvements can be quantified. The framework also provides guidance on the use of these model predictions, which differ in fundamental ways from the climate change projections that much of the community has become familiar with, including adjustment of mean and conditional biases, and consideration of how to best approach forecast uncertainty. In order to take into account uncertainties in the future climate projections there is a growing demand for probabilistic projections of climate change. This paper presents a methodology for producing such a probabilistic analysis of future temperature extremes. The 20- and 100-years return levels are obtained from that of the normalized variable and the changes in mean and standard deviation given by climate models for the desired future periods. Uncertainty in future change of these extremes is quantified using a multi-model ensemble and a perturbed physics ensemble. The probability density functions of future return levels are computed at a representative location from the joint probability distribution of mean and standard deviation changes given by the two combined ensembles of models. For the studied location, the 100-years return level at the end of the century is lower than 41°C with an 80% confidence. Then, as the number of model simulations is low to compute a reliable distribution, two techniques proposed in the literature (local pattern scaling and ANOVA) have been used to infer the changes in mean and standard deviation for the combinations of RCM and GCM which have not been run. The ANOVA technique leads to better results for the reconstruction of the mean changes, whereas the two methods fail to correctly infer the changes in standard deviation. This paper presents a comparison of principal component (PC) regression and regularized expectation maximization (RegEM) to reconstruct European summer and winter surface air temperature over the past millennium. Reconstruction is performed within a surrogate climate using the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Climate System Model (CSM) 1.4 and the climate model ECHO-G 4, assuming different white and red noise scenarios to define the distortion of pseudoproxy series. We show how sensitivity tests lead to valuable “a priori” information that provides a basis for improving real world proxy reconstructions. Our results emphasize the need to carefully test and evaluate reconstruction techniques with respect to the temporal resolution and the spatial scale they are applied to. Furthermore, we demonstrate that uncertainties inherent to the predictand and predictor data have to be more rigorously taken into account. The comparison of the two statistical techniques, in the specific experimental setting presented here, indicates that more skilful results are achieved with RegEM as low frequency variability is better preserved. We further detect seasonal differences in reconstruction skill for the continental scale, as e.g. the target temperature average is more adequately reconstructed for summer than for winter. For the specific predictor network given in this paper, both techniques underestimate the target temperature variations to an increasing extent as more noise is added to the signal, albeit RegEM less than with PC regression. This paper analyzes the diurnal temperature range (DTR) over land in simulations of the recent past and in future projections by 20 models participating in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 5 (CMIP5). The annually averaged DTR is evaluated for the present-day climate using two gridded datasets (HadGHCND and CRU). The DTR varies substantially between different CMIP5 models, particularly in the subtropics, and is generally underestimated. In future projections of the high emission scenario RCP8.5, the models disagree on both the sign and the magnitude of the change in DTR. Still, a majority of the models project a globally averaged reduction in the DTR, with an increase over Europe, a decrease over the Sahara desert and a substantial decrease in DTR at high latitudes in winter. The general DTR reduction is partly linked to the enhancement of the downwelling clear sky longwave radiation due to greenhouse gases. At high latitudes in winter, the decrease in DTR seems to be enforced by an increase in cloudiness, but in most other regions counteracted by decreases in cloud fraction. Changes in the hydrological cycle and in the clear sky shortwave radiation also impact the DTR. The DTR integrates many processes and neither the model differences in the DTR nor in the change in DTR can be attributed to a single parameter. Which variables that impact the model discrepancies vary both regionally and seasonally. Prolonged low temperature significantly threatens transportation and planting in populous areas and is closely linked to slowly varying forcing such as sea surface temperature (SST). In this study, we reveal the impact of the north–south dipole pattern in extra-tropical North Atlantic SST (DNA) anomaly on surface air temperature (SAT) over southern China in February. The positive phase of the DNA is favorable for a positive North Atlantic Oscillation-like pattern at the troposphere via synoptic eddy vorticity forcing and triggers a southeastward-propagating Rossby wave train associated with the deepened East Asian trough and the strengthened Siberian high, which are conducive to enhancement of the East Asian winter monsoon. A stronger monsoon leads to lower-than-normal SAT over southern China by intensifying southward cold air outbreaks. Considerably, the extremely low temperature over southern China in February 2022 is explainable by this physical mechanism. Furthermore, experiments with a linear baroclinic model verify that the proposed downstream propagating Rossby wave train is mainly associated with the midlatitude North Atlantic SST anomaly. During the second half of the twentieth century, the Antarctic Surface Air Temperature (SAT) trends are characterized by fast warming over West Antarctica but mild cooling over East Antarctica. However, after 2000, the warming over several stations in the Antarctic Peninsula slowed down, whereas the South Pole experienced fast warming. These reversed SAT trends show strong regionality and seasonality, together with large uncertainty and disagreement among different observational and reanalysis datasets, which makes it difficult to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the multi-decadal Antarctic SAT trend and its reversal. In this study, we use the Combined Maximum Covariance Analysis (CMCA) method to extract the most coherent modes of the Antarctic SAT trends among six reanalysis datasets and 26 station-based observations. Further analysis shows that the reversals of the SAT trends before and after 2000, especially for austral spring and summer, are mainly attributed to the reversed trends of the leading CMCA modes and their related atmospheric circulation and thermal advection patterns over Antarctica. For austral spring, the reversal of the west-warming-east-cooling pattern over Antarctica is closely related to the changes of thermal advection induced by the anomalous circulation center over the Antarctic Peninsula–Weddell Sea region. For summer, the post-2000 reversal of the Antarctic Peninsula-warming-East Antarctic-cooling is attributed to the stratospheric ozone recovery over the Antarctic, and the associated adjustment of the southern annular mode. The East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) intensifies in the early twenty-first century and links with frequent impacts of large-scale persistent extreme cold events in winter in East Asia in recent years. We found that there has been a significant positive correlation between the EAWM and Interhemispheric Oscillation (IHO). However, conspicuous interdecadal variations have occurred in the relationship between the EAWM and IHO. The relationship between the IHO and EAWM was most significant during 1979–2020, but this relationship was weak and insignificant during 1962–1978. During 1979–2020, the atmospheric mass (surface pressure) difference between the Northern Hemisphere (NH) and Southern Hemisphere (SH) during 1979–2020 was significantly reduced by 7.85% (0.75 × 1015 kg) compared with that during 1962–1978. Such interhemispheric redistribution of atmospheric mass (AM) has had a distinct impact on the land-sea pressure contrast in East Asia and has intensified the connection between the EAWM and IHO. A strengthened EAWM has resulted in notable cooling and more severe winters in China. The apparent exportation of AM in the Antarctic region is an important driving factor for this interhemispheric change. The accompanying anomalous accumulation of AM in the NH is linked with an increase in the pressure difference between land and sea in East Asia, resulting in intensifying correlation between IHO and the EAWM. The decadal enhancement of the IHO during 1979–2020 was closely connected with conspicuous warming in the tropical troposphere/lower stratosphere (UTLS). A seesaw pattern of anomalous air temperature and ozone between tropical and Antarctic UTLS has induced a decrease in Antarctic ozone masses and air temperature and has strengthened the polar vortex, corresponding to a decadal enhancement of interhemispheric AM imbalance. Extreme heat events happen frequently in East Asia, and may cause great damage to the ecosystem and society. The synergistic effect of the summer positive North Atlantic Oscillation (pNAO) and positive northwest Pacific (pNWP) sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) on the interannual variability of the extreme heat events in the central–eastern China (CEC) is investigated in this study. The two factors act synergistically in strengthening the extreme heat events in the CEC via a series of atmospheric bridges, and the CEC is likely to experience a hotter summer when both the summer pNAO and pNWP SSTA occur. The pNWP SSTA increases the strength of pNAO via the eastward propagating Rossby wave from the western Pacific. The enhanced pNAO induces a stronger eastward Rossby wave propagation across the Eurasian continent, and leads to a strong anomalous anticyclone over the CEC. The significantly increased atmosphere thickness increases the air temperature of the layer, and favors the extreme heat events in the CEC. Besides, the pNWP SSTA also has adjacent effect on the atmospheric circulation over the CEC, which could lead to a positive geopotential height anomaly. Therefore, the summer pNAO and pNWP SSTA act synergistically in influencing the atmospheric circulation over the CEC, and thereby significantly increase the extreme heat events in the CEC. The temperature rise during the growing season on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) is crucial for the local vegetation phenology and atmospheric circulation. In this study, we investigated the possible effects of soil moisture (SM) anomalies associated with the freeze–thaw process on the surface air temperature (SAT) rise during the growing season using observations and reanalysis data from 1979 to 2014. Results demonstrate that winter SM anomalies associated with the freeze–thaw process can persist until July, significantly modulating SAT rise intensity from May to July on the TP. Positive winter SM anomalies can lead to decreased in SAT in May but increased in SAT in July, thus strengthening the SAT rise from May to July. Further analysis of physical mechanisms suggest the positive winter SM anomaly leads to the increase of surface latent heat flux but the decrease of surface sensible heat flux in May, thus cooling the SAT. As July approaches, significantly increased atmospheric water vapor caused by the positive winter SM anomaly leads to the enhancement of surface downward longwave radiation, which exceeds the cooling effect of decreased sensible heat, resulting in a warmer SAT. Previous studies mainly revealed the "drier SM—higher SAT" feedback. Here we highlight that the thermal variations caused by SM anomalies related with the freeze–thaw process are complicated in the TP, with completely opposite climatic effects during different months. Taking the semiannual cycle of surface air temperature (SAT) into account in fitting the finer structure of the seasonal cycle, this study reveals the specific role of the semiannual cycle in modulating variations of the season onsets and lengths for the first time. The time-varying amplitudes and phases of the annual and semiannual SAT cycle for the period 1964 to 2017 in China are extracted from daily observations based on harmonic analysis. The results show that the phase differences between the two harmonics remain essentially unchanged, while the amplitude ratio of the semiannual to annual harmonics tends to increase after 1988. This enhanced semiannual cycle together with the global warming and annual cycle changes jointly led to a much longer summer with an average speed of 7.45 days/10 years and shorter spring, autumn, and winter with speeds of − 2.43, − 1.63, and − 4.26 days/10 years, respectively. Such obvious asymmetry cannot be found in fitting seasonal cycles by only annual harmonics. The average absolute percentages of the linear trends of season onsets and lengths caused by the intensification of the semiannual cycle are 52.63% and 78.66%. It indicates that season onsets and length not only depend on the phase of annual and semiannual harmonic, but also highly related to the strength of semiannual cycle. The time evolutions of semiannual cycle strength in China are found to be significantly correlated to the meridional temperature advection. The northernmost margin of the East Asian summer monsoon (NMEASM) is the northernmost position that the East Asia summer monsoon (EASM) can reach. NMEASM has obvious multi-scale variability, and well reflects the wet/dry climate variability in northern China. Predicting the location change of the NMEASM is important for understanding future East Asian climate change. However, the variability of the NMEASM has not been studied extensively, and its underlying mechanisms have not been clarified. To explore the movement of the NMEASM and its causes, we use reanalysis datasets to evaluate the NMEASM index from 1979 to 2018. The NMEASM indicates a decreasing trend over 40 years and a significant abrupt point in 2000, which is positively correlated with the Tibetan Plateau snow cover before 2000 and the Siberian snow cover after 2000 in spring. The decreased Siberian snow cover increases the soil temperature and decreases the atmospheric baroclinicity over Mongolia and northern China after 2000. The decreased atmospheric baroclinicity induces the dipole mode of anticyclonic anomaly over Mongolia and northern China and the cyclonic anomaly over the Sea of Japan by modulating the wave activity flux (WAF). The WAF's southeastward propagation strengthens the anticyclonic anomaly over Mongolia and northern China and the cyclonic anomaly over the Sea of Japan, which weakens the upward movement and water vapor transport, respectively. Hence, the decreased Siberian snow cover in spring modulates the precipitation over Mongolia and northern China and the southward movement of NMEASM by turbulent westerly circulation. The diurnal cycle is a prominent feature of Earth's weather and climate. Partly due to lack of sub-daily data, our understanding of the diurnal cycle is incomplete. This study analyzes 3-hourly surface observations and ERA5 hourly data to evaluate ERA5's performance in simulating the diurnal cycle and to quantify the diurnal variations in common meteorological and climate fields over the globe. The goal is to provide a standard reference for the diurnal cycle in various surface and atmospheric fields. Here I focus on surface pressure (Ps), air temperature (Tas), relative (RH) and specific humidity (q), and winds. Results show that ERA5 captures well the observed diurnal variations in Ps, Tas and RH, showing the dominant westward-propagating wavenumber-2 pattern in Ps and wavenumber-1 pattern in Tas and RH. Over many land areas, Ps 24 h cycle (S1) can reach an amplitude of 1.0–1.5 hPa, comparable to its semidiurnal cycle (S2), and the S1 enhances the 1st peak around 1000 local solar time (LST) but suppresses the 2nd peak around 2200 LST in Ps. Diurnal variations in Tas and RH are out-of-phase and dominated by S1, with a mean amplitude of 3–4 °C for Tas and 10–15% for RH over land (but with considerable variations) and a maximum for Tas (a minimum for RH) around 1500 LST. Tas and RH diurnal variations are much weaker over ocean, with an amplitude of ~ 0.7–0.8 °C for Tas and 1–2% for RH. Surface q is slightly higher during the day than at night with a dip in middle afternoon in the tropics and warm-season extratropics. Surface wind speed shows a diurnal amplitude of 0.5–1.0 m/s over land and about half of that over ocean and a peak in the early-middle afternoon. ERA5 data suggests that the surface Tas and RH diurnal cycle extends to the middle-upper troposphere with similar phases but reduced amplitudes. Being strongly influenced by internal climate variability, the atmospheric circulation response to greenhouse gas forcing in the future climate is uncertain. This study addresses atmospheric circulation through representative circulation types (CTs) and investigates the CTs' changes with respect to frequency and effect on surface temperature and precipitation over a pan-Scandinavian domain. The analysis is based on the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute Large Ensemble performed with EC-Earth3: 50-member ensembles from one historical and six scenario simulations for the twenty-first century are used to assess internal variability and significance of changes. Although the results show no strong future changes in the CTs' sea level pressure patterns, CT frequency changes suggest a future extension of summer conditions towards spring and autumn and point towards a clearer distinction between summer and winter. The present-climate CT effect on surface temperature is found to generally weaken which is consistent with a general decrease in temperature variability. Largest-scale and strongest temperature effect changes are projected between March and May for CT3, a cyclone towards the east of the domain associated with a domain-wide cooling effect that will likely be decreased towards the end of the twenty-first century. Similarly but of opposite sign, the CT effect on precipitation is strengthening as a result of the increased precipitation variability. Here, largest-scale and strongest effect enhancement is found for CT6, thus increasing its wetting effect over southern Scandinavia and drying effect west of the Scandes. During the austral winter (June–August) of 2021, the meteorological services of Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Paraguay, Bolivia, and Chile all issued forecasts for unusually cold conditions. Record-low minimum temperatures and cold spells were documented, including one strong cold wave episode that affected 5 countries. In this study, we define a cold wave as a period in which daily maximum and minimum air temperatures are below the corresponding climatological 10th percentile for three or more consecutive days. The intense cold wave event in the last week of June, 2021, resulted in record-breaking minimum daily temperatures in several places in central South America and Chile. Several locations had temperatures about 10 °C below average, central South America had freezing conditions, and southern Brazil even saw snow. The cold air surge was characterized by an intense upper-air trough located close to 35° S and 70° W. The southerly flow to the west of this trough brought very cold air northward into subtropical and tropical South America. A northward flow between the lower-level cyclonic and anticyclonic perturbations caused the intense southerly flow between the upper-level ridge and trough. This condition facilitated the inflow of near-surface cold air from southern Argentina into southeastern Brazil and tropical South America east of the Andes. In the city of São Paulo, the cold wave caused the death of 13 homeless people from hypothermia. Frost and snow across southern and southeastern Brazil caused significant damage to coffee, sugarcane, oranges, grapes, and other fruit and vegetable crops. Southern China is prone to floods during the wet season, and regional extreme precipitation is expected to become more frequent given the context of climate change. However, the prediction skills and predictability of the spatial distribution of extreme precipitation days (EPDs) over southern China remain unclear. To address this issue, through observational diagnosis and numerical experiment, the present study revealed the formation mechanisms of the two leading modes of pre-summer (May and June) EPDs in southern China, and established a physical-based empirical model (P-E model) to predict the distribution of EPDs in the region. The results revealed the following: (1) the first mode of pre-summer EPDs in southern China displayed a uniform pattern, while the second mode presented a meridional dipole pattern. The uniform pattern of the first mode is associated with the tropical western North Pacific anomalous anticyclone (TWPAC), whereas the meridional dipole pattern of the second mode is related to the subtropical western North Pacific anomalous anticyclone (SWPAC); (2) the spring North Atlantic tripole sea surface temperature (SST) pattern, the northern North America surface air temperature, and the snow cover depth over central Siberia contribute to the variation of the first mode and TWPAC, whereas the spring extratropical North Atlantic dipole SST pattern and the spring change of sea ice concentration over the Barents and Kara seas are physically linked with the variation of the second mode and SWPAC; (3) based on these predictors, the established P-E model demonstrated predictive skill with regard to the principal components of the first two modes, and the spatial distribution of EPDs in southern China was reconstructed. The areal mean temporal correlation coefficient skill for the independent prediction period (2011–2021) was 0.34, while for the pattern correlation coefficient skill averaged over the entire period was 0.28. In comparison with the maximum attainable skills, both metrics indicate potential for improvement. This is the second of the two-part paper series on the analysis and evaluation of the Fifth phase of Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) simulation of contemporary climate as well as IPCC, AR5 Representative Concentrations Pathways (RCP), 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios projections of the Greater Horn of Africa (GHA) Climate. In the first part (Otieno and Anyah in Clim Dyn, ) we focused on the historical simulations, whereas this second part primarily focuses on future projections based on the two scenarios. Six Earth System Models (ESMs) from CMIP5 archive have been used to characterize projected changes in seasonal and annual mean precipitation, temperature and the hydrological cycle by the middle of twenty-first century over the GHA region, based on IPCC, 5th Assessment Report (AR5) RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios. Nearly all the models outputs analyzed reproduce the correct mean annual cycle of precipitation, with some biases among the models in capturing the correct peak of precipitation cycle, more so, March-April-May (MAM) seasonal rainfall over the equatorial GHA region. However, there is significant variation among models in projected precipitation anomalies, with some models projecting an average increase as others project a decrease in precipitation during different seasons. The ensemble mean of the ESMs indicates that the GHA region has been experiencing a steady increase in both precipitation and temperature beginning in the early 1980s and 1970s respectively in both RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios. Going by the ensemble means, temperatures are projected to steadily increase uniformly in all the seasons at a rate of 0.3/0.5 °C/decade under RCP4.5/8.5 scenarios over northern GHA region leading to an approximate temperature increase of 2/3 °C by the middle of the century. On the other hand, temperatures will likely increase at a rate of 0.3/0.4 °C/decade under RCP4.5/8.5 scenarios in both equatorial and southern GHA region leading to an approximate temperature increase of 2/2.5 °C by the middle of twenty-first century. Nonetheless, projected precipitation increase varied across seasons and sub-regions. With the exception of the equatorial region, that is projected to experience precipitation increase during DJF season, most sub-regions are projected to experience precipitation increase within their peak seasons, with the highest rate of increase experienced during DJF and OND seasons over southern and equatorial GHA regions respectively. Notably, as precipitation increases, the deficit (E < P) between evaporation (E) and precipitation (P) increased over the years, with a negatively skewed distribution. This generally implies that there is a high likelihood of an increased deficit in local moisture supply. This remarkable change in the general hydrological cycle (i.e. deficit in local moisture) is projected to be also coincident with intensified westerly anomaly influx from the Congo basin into the region. However, better understanding of the detailed changes in hydrological cycle will require comprehensive water budget analyses that require daily or sub-daily variables, and was not a specific focus of the present study. This paper analyses the behavior of extreme events of surface precipitation and temperature inside the Pacific and Caribbean Catchment Basins in Colombia using several datasets such as observations, reconstructed data, NCEP-NCAR and ERA-40 reanalyses and data from the regional model REMO. We use an extreme value method that selects the time series excesses over a nonstationary threshold and adjusts them to a generalized Pareto distribution. The goodness of fit is evaluated through a test that includes the Cramer-von Mises, Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Anderson-Darling statistics and the p values generated by parametric bootstrap resampling. The test not only evaluates the goodness of fit but also the threshold choice. The parameters are presented in maps that allow recognition of the features of the extreme behaviour inside the catchment basins, and differences and similarities between them. Maps of return periods for the maximum extreme events are also presented. A strong influence of the El Niño-Southern oscillation on the extreme events of both temperature and precipitation is found in the two catchment basins. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this paper is to investigate different aspects of the seasonal-to-interannual temperature variability in Eastern Patagonia, the southernmost area of South America, east of the Andes Cordillera. Homogenous regions of seasonal variability and the atmospheric circulation patterns associated with warm and cold conditions in each of them are described in this study. Relationships between temperature in Eastern Patagonia and that registered in other areas of southern South America are also addressed. Results show that the northern and southern areas of Eastern Patagonia have different temperature variability in summer and autumn whereas the temperature variability tends to be more homogeneous within the region during winter and spring. Warm (cold) conditions in the northern areas are associated with reinforced (weakened) westerlies in summer, winter and spring whereas northerly (southerly) advections of warm (cold) air toward the region produce such conditions in autumn. Temperature in the southern portion of Eastern Patagonia is affected by anticyclonic (cyclonic) anomalies that enhance (reduce) the incoming solar radiation and induce reinforced (weakened) westerlies promoting warm (cold) conditions in the region. Furthermore, cyclonic (anticyclonic) anomalies at subpolar latitudes hinder (favor) outbreaks of cold air increasing (decreasing) the temperature over areas of Eastern Patagonia. The circulation anomalies associated with warm (cold) conditions in Eastern Patagonia also promote cold (warm) conditions over areas of northern Argentina, Paraguay and southern Brazil. In the present paper the effect of an abrupt change of the atmospheric radiative forcing is investigated by means of a global climate model that includes a mixed layer ocean. In assessing if, under such a change, the model response has a bifurcation point, the steady solution is studied for a sudden decrease of CO concentration from its actual value. It is found that there is a critical threshold for CO content below which the model ends up to a snowball Earth. It occurs for a few percentage changes of CO concentration around the threshold because the model strongly depends on the relationship among atmospheric temperature, water vapor content and the sudden ice-albedo feedback activation, even in the subtropical regions. Moreover, results suggest that the transition to ice-covered Earth is clearly favoured when Q-flux corrections (i.e. the parameterization of ocean heat transports) are removed. One obstacle on the way to a comprehensive spatial reconstruction of regional temperature changes over the past centuries is the sparseness of long winter temperature records. This paper reconstructs a proxy record of April and November-December temperatures in south-central Finland for the interval from 1836 to 1872 from breakup and freeze-up dates and ice-cover duration of a lake. Emphasis is on detecting the suitable winter months and quantifying the calibrations with measured temperatures (1873-2002). The calibration slope for the breakup date (0.158°C/day) is larger than for freeze-up date (0.119°C/day) or duration (0.090°C/day). A comparison with results from other proxy records shows that the slope may depend also on the geographical site. Trend analyses of the full temperature records (1836-2002) indicate the existence of minor change-points at around 1867 (April temperature) and 1874 (November-December temperature), with warming rates thereafter of 1.67°C per century (April) and 1.16°C per century (November-December). Spectral analyses reveal peaks in the band between 2 and 5 year period, which may point to influences of the North Atlantic Oscillation, and less power in the decadal band (up to 42 year period). As Himalaya-Tibet Highland (HTH), a spatially extensive and complex terrain, plays influential roles in the regional and global climate, its representation in climate models is a decisive factor in climate simulations. It is established that higher spatial resolution improves the simulation of several seasonal mean features over this region, but how much improvement comes from the better representation of surface topography and how much comes from the better modeling of the atmospheric and surface processes are still not clear. To understand this, three sets of 6-member ensemble simulations are conducted using the NCAR Community Atmosphere Model version 5.1 (CAM5.1) at: (1) 1.9° × 2.5° resolution (Coarse), (2) 0.47° × 0.63° resolution (Fine), and (3) topography is prescribed at the Coarse resolution and rest of the model processes are computed at the Fine resolution (Hybrid). The Coarse resolution overlooks most of the intricate features of the topography with a severe bias of ~ 1–2 km but Fine resolution does a much better job in their representations. Surface air temperatures are found to be strongly dependent on the resolution of topography and therefore it is desirable to resolve topography in models for the realistic simulation and projection of temperatures. Rest of the variables, viz. seasonal mean, seasonal cycle and probability distribution of precipitation; tropospheric temperature and moisture; Tibetan anticyclone, show remarkable improvements with the increase in resolution of the atmospheric and surface processes. Influence of the resolution of topography is found to be limited to the model levels adjacent to the surface, and for higher model levels, the resolution of the atmospheric and surface processes is noted to play a more crucial role. This paper analyzes surface climate variability in the climate forecast system reanalysis (CFSR) recently completed at the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP). The CFSR represents a new generation of reanalysis effort with first guess from a coupled atmosphere-ocean-sea ice-land forecast system. This study focuses on the analysis of climate variability for a set of surface variables including precipitation, surface air 2-m temperature (T2m), and surface heat fluxes. None of these quantities are assimilated directly and thus an assessment of their variability provides an independent measure of the accuracy. The CFSR is compared with observational estimates and three previous reanalyses (the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis or R1, the NCEP/DOE reanalysis or R2, and the ERA40 produced by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts). The CFSR has improved time-mean precipitation distribution over various regions compared to the three previous reanalyses, leading to a better representation of freshwater flux (evaporation minus precipitation). For interannual variability, the CFSR shows improved precipitation correlation with observations over the Indian Ocean, Maritime Continent, and western Pacific. The T2m of the CFSR is superior to R1 and R2 with more realistic interannual variability and long-term trend. On the other hand, the CFSR overestimates downward solar radiation flux over the tropical Western Hemisphere warm pool, consistent with a negative cloudiness bias and a positive sea surface temperature bias. Meanwhile, the evaporative latent heat flux in CFSR appears to be larger than other observational estimates over most of the globe. A few deficiencies in the long-term variations are identified in the CFSR. Firstly, dramatic changes are found around 1998-2001 in the global average of a number of variables, possibly related to the changes in the assimilated satellite observations. Secondly, the use of multiple streams for the CFSR induces spurious jumps in soil moisture between adjacent streams. Thirdly, there is an inconsistency in long-term sea ice extent variations over the Arctic regions between the CFSR and other observations with the CFSR showing smaller sea ice extent before 1997 and larger extent starting in 1997. These deficiencies may have impacts on the application of the CFSR for climate diagnoses and predictions. Relationships between surface heat fluxes and SST tendency and between SST and precipitation are analyzed and compared with observational estimates and other reanalyses. Global mean fields of surface heat and water fluxes together with radiation fluxes at the top of the atmosphere are documented and presented over the entire globe, and for the ocean and land separately. This paper describes the effects of time step on the simulation of tropical climate in the NCAR-Community Atmosphere Model version 3 (CAM3). A set of multi-year integrations are carried out in a real-planet framework using actual land-ocean distribution and observed sea surface temperature. Over the tropics there is an increase in total rainfall with a decrease in time step size. Using a lower time step, there is a decrease in the convective component of rainfall, however, the stratiform component increases, and more than compensates the decrease in the former, thus leading to a higher total rainfall. A decrease in time step leads to an increase in the frequencies of moderate, and heavy rainfall categories, which is responsible for the increase in time mean total rainfall over the tropics. Also, the spatial distribution of rainfall becomes more realistic during both summer and winter seasons. In regard to the simulation of equatorial waves, it is found that a lower time step leads to a reduction in the speed of Kelvin waves. The latent heating profile becomes more bottom-heavy with a reduction in time step size, which potentially leads to slower Kelvin waves. Finally, additional experiments conducted in an aqua-planet framework show a consistent and systematic change in the analyzed variables with change in time step, and hence confirm the robustness of the results across modeling frameworks. This paper examines the performances of various cumulus convective parameterization schemes in the tropical atmosphere using an aqua-planet atmospheric General Circulation Model forced by zonally symmetric but latitudinally varying sea surface temperature (SST) and solar angle. The intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) is represented by intense precipitation. The assigned Control experiment with a specific SST distribution, as designated by the Aqua Planet Experiment, yields a single ITCZ when Zhang’s scheme or Manabe’s scheme is employed, whereas a double ITCZ occurs when Tiedtke’s scheme is used. The key to the occurrence of a double ITCZ is latitudinal variation in evaporation within the boundary layer. Such variation is induced mainly by latitudinal variation in the zonal wind speed, with the existence of a calm belt at the equator and a maximum wind speed located off the equator, arising from the evaporation–wind feedback (EWF) mechanism. The latitudinal distribution of evaporation results in a decrease in the height of the lifting condensation level in areas off the equator and an increase at the equator. The occurrence of a single ITCZ in Zhang’s scheme is attributed to the use of a Convective Available Potential Energy criterion by which convection occurs more readily at the equator. As a result, a precipitation maximum is maintained at the equator via a prevailing Conditional Instability of the Second Kind mechanism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this paper is to re-examine and quantify a hypothesis first put forward by J. Bjerknes concerning the anomalous coldness during the AD 1790–1820 period in western Europe. Central to Bjerknes’ hypothesis is an anomalous interaction between ocean and atmosphere studied here using an ocean-atmosphere coupled climate model of intermediate complexity. A reconstruction of the sea-level pressure pattern over the North Atlantic sector averaged over the period 1790–1820 is assimilated in this model, using a recently developed technique which has not been applied to paleoclimatic modelling before. This technique ensures that averaged over the simulation the reconstructed pattern is retrieved whilst leaving atmospheric and climatic variability to develop freely. In accordance with Bjerknes’ hypothesis, the model results show anomalous southward advection of polar waters into the northeastern North Atlantic in the winter season, lowering the sea-surface temperatures (SSTs) there with 0.3–1.0°C. This SST anomaly is persistent into the summer season. A decrease in western European winter surface air temperatures is found which can be related almost completely to advection of cold polar air. The decrease in summer surface air temperatures is related to a combination of low SSTs and anomalous atmospheric circulation. The modelled winter and summer temperatures in Europe compare favourably with reconstructed temperatures. Enhanced baroclinicity at the Atlantic seaboard and over Baffin Island is observed along with more variability in the position of the North Atlantic storm tracks. This paper investigates the possible implications for the earth-system of a melting of the Greenland ice-sheet. Such a melting is a possible result of increased high latitude temperatures due to increasing anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. Using an atmosphere-ocean general circulation model (AOGCM), we investigate the effects of the removal of the ice sheet on atmospheric temperatures, circulation, and precipitation. We find that locally over Greenland, there is a warming associated directly with the altitude change in winter, and the altitude and albedo change in summer. Outside of Greenland, the largest signal is a cooling over the Barents sea in winter. We attribute this cooling to a decrease in poleward heat transport in the region due to changes to the time mean circulation and eddies, and interaction with sea-ice. The simulated climate is used to force a vegetation model and an ice-sheet model. We find that the Greenland climate in the absence of an ice sheet supports the growth of trees in southern Greenland, and grass in central Greenland. We find that the ice sheet is likely to regrow following a melting of the Greenland ice sheet, the subsequent rebound of its bedrock, and a return to present day atmospheric CO2 concentrations. This regrowth is due to the high altitude bedrock in eastern Greenland which allows the growth of glaciers which develop into an ice sheet. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
