Changing climate has altered the trends and variability of precipitation and temperature globally and thereby increasing the risk of natural and social disasters, especially in coastal climatic transitional zones such as the Huaihe river basin (HRB). This paper applies the Empirical Quantile Mapping (EQM) method for bias correction and systematically evaluates the performance of the 30 Global climate models (GCMs) of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 (CMIP6) in simulating precipitation and temperature over the Huaihe river basin (HRB) for 1979–2014. A suitable multi-model ensemble subset (BMME) is selected based on the Euclidean Distance (ED) synthetic metric. Results show that in comparison to the baseline period 1995–2014, precipitation (temperature) over HRB is projected to increase at the rate of around 15 mm/decade (0.1 °C/decade), 16 mm/decade (0.3 °C/decade), 20 mm/decade (0.5 °C/decade), and 15 mm/decade (0.6 °C/decade) for the period 2015–2100, under Shared Socioeconomic Pathways SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0, and SSP5-8.5, respectively. In the long-term (2081–2100), the annual precipitation is projected to increase by 32%, 27%, 35%, and 26%, under the four scenarios, respectively. The temperature is projected to remain stable or slightly decrease under SSP1-2.6 (2 °C) and SSP2-4.5 (3 °C), while will keep rising and increasing by 6 °C under SSP5-8.5 and by 4 °C under SSP3-7.0 by 2100. The isotherm and isohyet are projected to shift northwest from southeastern coastal China to inland in the future, which is likely associated with the northwestward shift of the western Pacific anticyclone in summer. In the context of ongoing global warming, understanding the East Asian Summer Monsoon (EASM) dynamics is of great significance for predicting future climate changes. This study reconstructed the mid-Holocene precipitation variations on the basis of pollen data obtained from Taojiacun section in the Luoyang Basin within the Central Plains of China. Our research results show that the region experienced three dry intervals during the data-covering period (~ 8.08 to ~ 4.76 cal. kyr BP): ~8.08 to ~ 7.35, ~ 6.42 to ~ 5.59, and ~ 4.94 to ~ 4.76 cal. kyr BP. The intervened were two wet intervals: ~7.35 to ~ 6.42 and ~ 5.59 to ~ 4.94 cal. kyr BP. The chronological correspondence between drier (wetter) intervals in the Luoyang Basin and warmer (cooler) intervals in the western Tropical Pacific implies that the north-south shifts of the Western Pacific Subtropical High (WPSH), driven by the western Tropical Pacific Sea Surface Temperature (SST), regulated the positions of the EASM-related rain-belt during the data-covering period. We compared the mean annual precipitation (Pann) sequence from Taojiacun section with those from the southern and northern neighboring areas. With a full consideration of chronological uncertainties and sampling resolution differences, it can be generalized that those drier (wetter) intervals in the Luoyang Basin within the Central Plains of China were broadly correspondent with those drier (wetter) intervals expressed in the sequences of the southern neighboring areas (i.e., the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River with an addition of the Huai River Basin). It means that the changes in precipitation in the Central Plains was most likely coincident with that in the southern neighboring areas during the data-covering period (~ 8.08 to ~ 4.76 cal. kyr BP). Quantifying the urbanization effect on trends in climate extremes is important both for detection and attribution studies and for human adaptation; however, a fundamental problem is how to accurately estimate a trend and its statistical significance, especially for non-Gaussian and serially dependent data. In this paper, the choice of trend estimation and significance testing method is suggested as important for these kinds of studies, as illustrated by quantifying the urbanization effect on trends in seven hot-extreme indices for the megacity of Shanghai during 1961-2013. Both linear and nonlinear trend estimation methods were used. The trends and corresponding statistical significances were estimated by taking into account potential non-Gaussian and serial dependence in the extreme indices. A new method based on adaptive surrogate data is proposed to test the statistical significance of the ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) nonlinear trend. The urbanization contribution was found to be approximately 34 % (43 %) for the trend in the non-Gaussian distributed heat wave index based on nonparametric linear trend (EEMD nonlinear trend) estimation. For some of the other six hot-extreme indices analyzed, the urbanization contributions estimated based on linear and nonlinear trends varied greatly, with as much as a twofold difference between them. For the linear trend estimation itself, the ordinary least squares fit can give a substantially biased estimation of the urbanization contribution for some of the non-Gaussian extreme indices. The interactions between the tropical Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean via the Walker circulation and the Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) play an important role in the inter-basin exchange and climate variations. The effects of the eastern Indian Ocean subsurface temperature conditions during the 2019 Indian Ocean dipole (IOD) event on the development of the 2020/2021 La Niña event are investigated of the National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center of China. Results of pacemaker experiments comparing the effects of the atmospheric bridge and the oceanic channel suggest that the subsurface temperature anomalies in the tropical Indian Ocean dominates the inter-basin forcing leading to the outburst of the 2020/2021 La Niña event. The strong subsurface cooling is found to propagate to the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean through the Indonesian seas and induce a strong La Niña event at the end of 2020, showing the long memory of the oceanic channel dynamics and the amplification by the ocean-atmospheric coupling. In comparison, experiments forced by surface temperature anomalies over the tropical Indian Ocean show that the atmospheric bridge alone is unable to induce the onset of the 2020 La Niña. The western North Pacific Subtropical High (WNPSH) is a key circulation system regulating the East Asian climate, and its area has crucial indicative for summer precipitation in China. In this study, we established the model for classification prediction of summer WNPSH area via the Gaussian Naive Bayes (GNB). By setting different category proportions and different training set sample sizes, we investigated the prediction ability of GNB and its dependent on the data sample size. After comparing the prediction performance of GNB with tree models which were commonly used in short-term climate prediction, it was found that the accuracy scores (ACC) and balanced accuracy scores (BCC) of GNB were statistically significantly higher than tree models. Additionally, under different category classification criteria, the ACC and BCC of GNB could maintain above 0.77 and 0.75, respectively. Especially for anomalous categories, the recalls values could maintain above 0.5. These results indicate that the GNB had very strong prediction ability for the summer WNPSH area and could also better predict the degree of anomalous WNPSH area. Moreover, under different training set sample sizes, the ACC of GNB could be maintained above 0.6, which suggests that the GNB was less dependent on the data sample size and could reduce the limitation of abrupt interdecadal changes in climate on the available data sample size to some extent. This study reveals strong prediction ability of GNB for the summer WNPSH area, which also has high reference value for the research of other short-term climate prediction problems. Under global warming, according to results obtained from offline drought indices driven by projections of general circulation models (GCMs), future droughts in China will worsen but the results are not consistent. We analyzed changes in droughts covering the entire hydrologic cycle using outputs of GCMs of the 6th Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) for SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5 climate scenarios, and compared the results with that of popular, offline drought indices [the self-calibrating Palmer Drought Severity Index (scPDSI), Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) and Standardized Precipitation Actual Evapotranspiration Index (SPAEI)]. Among meteorological, agricultural, and hydrological drought indices tested under both SSP scenarios, the results obtained from SPAEI and scPDSI agree better with univariate drought indices than SPEI. scPDSI generally agrees well with agricultural droughts (Standardized Soil Moisture Index with the surface soil moisture content; SSIS). Future droughts estimated using soil moisture analysis are more widespread than that from precipitation and runoff analysis in humid regions of South China by the end of the twenty-first century. In arid northwestern China and Inner Mongolia, drought areas and severity based on scPDSI and SSIS forced with the SSP scenarios show obvious decreasing trends, in contrast to increasing trends projected in South China. Trends projected using SPEI contradict those projected by other drought indices in non-humid regions. Therefore, selecting appropriate drought indices is crucial in project representative future droughts and provides meaningful information needed to achieve effective regional drought mitigation strategies under climate warming impact. The cross-shelf exchange between the Yellow and East China Seas (YECS) with the Kuroshio is important for vorticity, freshwater, and effluence balances of the regional and global oceans, the responses of which to future climate changes are estimated based on Max-Planck coupled model simulations under one historical (20C, 1970–2005) and two representative concentration pathway scenarios of global warming (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5) from 2006 to 2099. The results of the 20C simulation have shown prominent cross-shelf transports in the YECS, with annual mean outflow (OVT) and inflow (IVT) volume transports across the 100 m isobath of 3.97 Sv and 2.86 Sv (1 Sv = 106 m3 s−1), respectively. These annual mean OVTs (and their equivalent IVTs) are projected to increase by 0.42 Sv and 0.48 Sv from 2006 to 2099, at rates of 11.0% and 12.8% from the 2006–2016 means, under the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios, respectively. The maximum rates of increase are found in winter to be at 13.2% and 19.9%, respectively. Analyses suggest that the winter monsoon has a long-term southwesterly change, forcing coastal currents to flow into the Yellow Sea along the China coasts to compensate for the increase of the southeastward surface Ekman transport. Due to increases of the Tsushima Strait and upper-layer Kuroshio transports, both the OVT and IVT across the 200 m isobath have onshore changes, resulting in net onshore transport increments of 0.30 Sv and 0.57 Sv under the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios, respectively. To connect a wide range of research communities including climate change mitigation and adaptation activities, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 6th assessment report (AR6) employs the Shared Socioeconomic Pathway (SSP) scenarios. The CORDEX East Asia calls for a dynamical downscaling of climate change projections under the new SSP scenarios. In this study, the state-of-the-art regional climate model RegCM4 with a horizontal resolution of 25 km was used to dynamically downscale future climate changes, which were derived from the global climate model FGOALS-g3, under multiple SSP scenarios over the CORDEX East Asia Phase II domain. Compared to the driving global model FGOALS-g3, the downscaling exhibited added value in the simulation of present-day mean and extreme rainfall over China in terms of both spatial pattern correlation and biases. The largest improvements were found over the Pearl River Basin and the Yangtze River Basin. For the period of 2081–2100 under the SSP2-4.5 scenario, the areas in China with increases in the projected mean and extreme rainfall generally overlapped with the areas with substantial climatological mean and extreme rainfall in both RegCM4 and FGOALS-g3, which highlights the importance of simulated climatology in projecting future rainfall changes. The moisture budget analyses indicated that the projected increases in summer mean rainfall were mainly attributed to thermodynamic processes associated with the increased moisture. The mean and extreme rainfall was most sensitive to the increased emission scenarios in the Northwest Interior River Basin and least sensitive in southern China. From SSP1-2.6 to SSP5-8.5, larger fractions of land area and population would be affected by greater increased and more intense rainfall. If the emissions were reduced from SSP5-8.5 to SSP1-2.6, over 80% of the impacts would be avoided over most regions in China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Understanding future drought risks plays a crucial role in developing climate change adaptation strategies and in enhancing disaster resilience. However, previous studies may lead to biased conclusions due to the neglect of two factors, including the relative performance of climate simulations and the uncertainty in drought characterization. In this study, Bayesian model averaging is used to merge five regional climate model simulations and to project future changes in hydroclimatic regimes over China under two representative emission scenarios (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5). Drought characteristics, including drought severity and duration, are extracted using the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI). A Bayesian copula approach is used to uncover underlying interactions of drought characteristics and associated uncertainties across 10 climate divisions of China. The regional return periods of drought characteristics are used to assess future changes in multidimensional drought risks and the probability of extreme droughts. Our findings reveal that the variations in drought characteristics are generally underestimated by the ensemble mean (AEM) simulation. The Bayesian framework improves the reliability and accuracy of hydroclimate simulations and better reproduces the drought regimes compared to the AEM simulation. The drought duration and severity are projected to substantially increase for most areas of China based on the Bayesian framework, but the AEM simulation may lead to multiple opposite behaviors, especially under RCP4.5. The estimated joint risk from drought duration and drought severity is expected to increase under both emission scenarios. Climate extremes can severely impact socio-economic development. Climate trends of three temperature and three precipitation climate indices were evaluated in observational data, 23 models from the 5th Coupled Model Intercomparison Projects (CMIP5), and 20 models from CMIP6. The climate indices were calculated over the whole of China, and individually over the basins of its three major rivers. The indices are the spatio-temporal evolution characteristics of annual mean temperature (Tas), minimum of daily minimum temperature (TNn), maximum of daily maximum temperature (TXx), number of tropical nights (TR), daily precipitation (Pre), very heavy precipitation days (R20mm), maximum consecutive 5-day precipitation (Rx5day) and consecutive dry days (CDD). From 1961 to 2018, most of China has warmed; Tas, TNn, TXx and TR over China has increased by 1.7 °C, 2.8 °C, 1.1 °C and 9 days, respectively. Changes of Tas, TNn and TXx over the Yellow River Basin, Yangtze River Basin and Pearl River Basin were generally similar in sign. The most significant increase of TR was seen over the Pearl River Basin. Historical Tas was well reproduced by both CMIP5 and CMIP6 over the study regions, but obvious uncertainties exist in the simulation of Pre. In general, CMIP6 models were improved from CMIP5 models. Climate projections were calculated for the 2021–2100 period. Future warming over China would be stronger with higher SSP scenarios; TNn over China would warm seven times more under the SSP5-8.5 scenario (5.6 °C) compared to the SSP1-2.6 scenario. Future wetting over China would be stronger with higher the SSP scenarios; Under the SSP5-8.5 scenario, Pre, R20mm, Rx5day would increase by 28%, 150%, and 38%, respectively. Projected changes of CDD different by region—decreasing over most of China and the Yellow River Basin, but increasing over the Yangtze and Pearl River Basins. The higher of the emission scenario, the less significant the reduction of CDD over the two basins. Despite the importance of the Yellow River to China, climate change for the middle reaches of the Yellow River Basin (YRB) has been investigated far less than for other regions. This work focuses on future changes in mean and extreme climate of the YRB for the near-term (2021–2040), mid-term (2041–2060), and far-term (2081–2100) future, and assesses these with respect to the reference period (1986–2005) using the latest REgional MOdel (REMO) simulations, driven by three global climate models (GCMs) and assuming historical and future [Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 2.6 and 8.5] forcing scenarios, over the CORDEX East Asia domain at 0.22° horizontal resolution. The results show that REMO reproduces the historical mean climate state and selected extreme climate indices reasonably well, although some cold and wet biases exist. Increases in mean temperature are strongest for the far-term in winter, with an average increase of 5.6 °C under RCP 8.5. As expected, the future temperatures of the warmest day (TXx) and coldest night (TNn) increase and the number of frost days (FD) declines considerably. Changes to mean temperature and FD depend on elevation, which could be explained by the snow-albedo feedback. A substantial increase in precipitation (34%) occurs in winter under RCP 8.5 for the far-term. Interannual variability in precipitation is projected to increase, indicating a future climate with more extreme events compared to that of today. Future daily precipitation intensity and maximum 5-day precipitation would increase and the number of consecutive dry days would decline under RCP 8.5. The results highlight that pronounced warming at high altitudes and more intense rainfall could cause increased future flood risk in the YRB, if a high GHG emission pathway is realized. The future vegetation–climate system over East Asia, as well as its dependence on Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs), is investigated using a regional climate–vegetation model driven with boundary conditions from Flexible Global Ocean–Atmosphere–Land System Model: Grid-point Version 2. Over most of the region, due to the rising CO2 concentration and climate changes, the model projects greater vegetation density (leaf area index) and gradual shifts of vegetation type from bare ground to grass or from grass to trees; the projected spatial extent of the vegetation shift increases from RCP2.6 to RCP8.5. Abrupt shifts are projected under RCP8.5 over northeast China (with grass replacing boreal needleleaf evergreen trees due to heat stress) and India (with tropical deciduous trees replacing grass due to increased water availability). The impact of vegetation feedback on future precipitation is relatively weak, while its impact on temperature is more evident, especially during DJF over northeast China and India with differing mechanisms. In northeast China, the projected forest loss induces a cooling through increased albedo, and daytime high temperature (Tmax) is influenced more than nighttime low temperature (Tmin); in India, increased vegetation cover induces an evaporative cooling that outweighs the warming effect of an albedo decrease in DJF, leading to a weaker impact on Tmax than on Tmin. Based on a single model, the qualitative aspects of these results may hold while quantitative assessment will benefit from a follow-up regional model ensemble study driven by multiple general circulation models. A new bias-corrected, statistically downscaled product, the NASA Earth Exchange Global Daily Downscaled Projections (NEX-GDDP) dataset, has been developed and released to help in understanding climate change at local to regional scales. Here, we evaluate the performance of the NEX-GDDP data in simulating daily maximum temperature (TX) and daily minimum temperature (TN) in the historical period 1961–2005 over China at national and regional scales. Projected future changes in TX and TN are assessed under the Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) 4.5 and 8.5 emissions scenarios. Results show that the NEX-GDDP data can capture the basic spatial patterns of TX and TN, but these results underestimate the warming trends of TX and TN from 1961 to 2005 over China. The largest biases are found in western China due to its complex terrain conditions; these biases are 2.33 and 2.21 times larger than those found in eastern China for TX and TN, respectively. The climate projections show that the difference in uncertainties is small between the east and the west, and higher warming changes correspond to greater uncertainties. The increasing trends under the RCP8.5 are 2.22 and 2.31 times the size found under the RCP4.5 by the end of the twenty-first century for TX and TN, respectively. Southern China is a major grain-producing area, but has been suffering from increasingly serious droughts caused by global warming. As a result, crop losses have become serious. To provide insights into these losses, we obtained data to support a systematic and comprehensive analysis of how agricultural drought has caused crop losses from 1961 to 2011 and of the relationship between these changes and the climatic factors responsible for the losses. We found an obvious increase in the loss of crops due to agricultural drought in southern China, with the greatest increase in crop loss in the southwest and smaller increases in the south and southeast. Moreover, because each crop growth stage is affected differently by climatic factors and because the values of these factors show an uneven seasonal distribution, the losses were greatest when changes in various climatic factors occurred during key crop developmental periods. The fittings of the relationship between crop loss and various climatic factors was often strongest based on data from key developmental periods rather than based on data for the whole year. In addition, we found improved prediction of losses using multiple regression, and developed a model for assessing crop losses. Variation in winter temperature is less well understood than in annual and summer temperatures over long timescales, particularly in low-latitude (0–30° N) montane regions with large spatial and topographic heterogeneity. Understanding these variations could be critical for forest manageemnt in these important tree growing regions. We collected tree-ring cores from Yunnan Province in montane southwest China, to determine how winter temperature has varied in the past and to explore its possible drivers in this region. Six highly correlated site chronologies were combined into a long and well-replicated regional composite (RC) chronology. The RC chronology correlated strongest with mean early winter season temperature (EWST) from November to January during 1959–2015. We applied RC chronology to reconstruct EWST from 1653 to 2015. The reconstruction shows five relatively warm historic intervals (1658–1718, 1743–1755, 1771–1791, 1929–1959, and 1995–2015) and cold intervals (1720–1742, 1792–1852, 1860–1883, 1905–1928, and 1960–1994). The 1950s with six anomalous warm seasons and 1980s with five anomalous cold seasons were the warmest and coldest decades, respectively. The EWST reconstruction generally agreed with other winter temperature reconstructions from nearby areas and with historical documents. Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) might be a key forcing of multidecadal winter temperature variations in montane southwest China over the past three and half centuries. Both warm and cold temperature periods coincide with respective positive and negative phases of AMO. Besides, the cold intervals during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries may also have been influenced by large volcano eruptions in low-latitude regions of south and east Asia. Our EWST reconstruction not only improves our understanding of the trends and variations of winter climate history, but also supports planning for resilience in conservation, agriculture, and forestry management in montane southwest China into the future. We investigate a record-breaking heat wave in southern China (SC) and explore its association with the South China Sea (SCS) summer monsoon (SCSSM), using station observations and various reanalysis products. This heat wave event started in mid-May 2018 and persisted more than 15 days, when the maximum air temperature anomaly exceeded 6 °C. Meanwhile, the onset of the SCSSM was extremely late in 2018, primarily due to the intrusion of easterly winds over the SCS. We show that the anomalous easterlies over the SCS associated with the delayed SCSSM could block the moisture transport from the tropical oceans to SC, which led to decreased rainfall, increased surface radiation, and elevated probability of heat wave in SC during May 2018. Further analysis reveals that both SC heat waves and SCSSM were significantly affected by the Pacific subtropical high (PSH). The westward extension of the PSH can hinder the establishment of SCSSM via inducing easterly anomalies over the SCS, which reduces SC rainfall and results in a drier surface condition. Moreover, the westward displacement of the PSH may cause anomalously high pressures, descending air motions, and divergent winds over SC, which triggers above-normal air temperatures that are conducive to the occurrences of SC heat waves. This study also underlines the importance of Eurasian planetary wave trains in bridging the upstream climate variability and the changes in PSH during boreal spring, which could be used to improve the intra-seasonal predictions of SC heat wave and SCSSM onset. Self-organizing map (SOM) is used to simulate summer daily precipitation over the Yangtze–Huaihe river basin in Eastern China, including future projections. SOM shows good behaviors in terms of probability distribution of daily rainfall and spatial distribution of rainfall indices, as well as consistency of multi-model simulations. Under RCP4.5 Scenario, daily rainfall at most sites (63%) is projected to shift towards larger values. For the early 21st century (2016–2035), precipitation in the central basin increases, yet decreases occur over the middle reaches of the Yangtze River as well as a part of its southeast area. For the late 21st century (2081–2100), the mean precipitation and extreme indices experience an overall increase except for a few southeast stations. The total precipitation in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River and in its south area is projected to increase from 7% at 1.5 °C global warming to 11% at 2 °C, while the intensity enhancement is more significant in southern and western sites of the domain. A clustering allows to regroup all SOM nodes into four distinct regimes. Such regional synoptic regimes show remarkable stability for future climate. The overall intensification of precipitation in future climate is linked to the occurrence-frequency rise of a wet regime which brings longitudinally closer the South Asia High (eastward extended) and the Western Pacific Subtropical High (westward extended), as well as the reduction of a dry pattern which makes the two atmospheric centers of action move away from each other. The extreme temperature changes under a 0.5 °C global mean surface temperature warming increment is of great importance for climate change adaption and risk management on post-Paris-Agreement agenda. The impacts of the already happened 0.5 °C warming increment on extreme temperature can serve as essential references for the 1.5/2 °C projections. Quantifying the observed changes of climate extremes is hampered by the limitation of observational datasets in both spatial coverage and temporal continuity. The reanalysis datasets are hoped to be useful substitutes for the observations, but their performance over continental China remains unknown. In this study, we compare the extreme temperature changes associated with the past 0.5 °C warming derived from three reanalysis datasets including JRA-55, ERA and 20CR with the observation in China. Distinct increases (decreases) in warm (cold) extremes are detected in all three reanalyses in a spatially aggregated perspective as in the observation. On regional scales the reanalyses have evident spreads in regions with insufficient observational coverage such as the western China. JRA-55 shows good agreement with the observation in both spatial patterns and magnitudes of extreme temperature changes. Both ERA and 20CR show weaker consistency with the observation, particularly in western China, mainly due to less observational constraints in data assimilation. The different aerosol data used in reanalysis assimilation systems also influenced the data quality. Our results indicate that while the reanalyses can serve as useful substitutes to fill in the observational gaps, cautious should be taken in regions with sparse observations and large anthropogenic aerosol emissions. Soil temperature is an important variable of earth's surface system, and studying it is of great benefit to understanding the energy and hydrological cycles and climate change. Based on soil temperature data at a depth of 3.2 m from 113 stations in China from 1980 to 2017, the spatial distribution and temporal variation of the soil temperatures in China were analyzed by using a fuzzy C-means algorithm (FCM), linear fitting and the Mann–Kendall method. The results show that the average annual soil temperature at 3.2 m in China gradually increased from north to south, with the lowest temperatures in the northeast and Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau ( T 3.2 m ≤ 5 ∘ C ) and the highest in South China ( T 3.2 m ≥ 25 ∘ C ). The country is divided into 10 regions using the FCM method. The soil temperature anomalies show a continuous increase over time, but there are significant regional differences in the warming speeds. The northeast and northwest regions exhibit the largest temperature increases, approximately 0.57 ° C / 10 a , North China has the second highest increases, with approximately 0.36 ° C / 10 a , and the values in other areas are less than 0.3 ° C / 10 a . Over the 38-year period, the soil temperature increased by approximately 1.4 ° C , and the temperature increase mainly occurred during the last 20 years. The positive center of the annual soil temperature anomaly at 3.2 m in the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau during the last 2 decades of the twentieth century became cooling to a negative soil temperature anomaly at 3.2 m during the first 2 decades of the twenty-first century. The negative centers for the annual soil temperature anomaly at 3.2 m in the south of Shaanxi and the middle reaches of the Yangtze River during the last 2 decades of the twentieth century became warming to positive soil temperature anomalies at 3.2 m in the first 2 decades of the twenty-first century. Severe El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) droughts that occurred in southwest China during the last millennium have exerted important impacts on natural ecosystems and human society. Fossil phytoliths in high-resolution (~ 7 year) fluvial sediments in the monsoon rainforest are studied to reveal the influence of ENSO activity on tropical southwest China. The phytolith records together with multiproxy analysis indicate that three phases of distinctively warm-dry and cool-wet climate pattern have exerted profound influences on the sedimentary environment and tropical monsoon rainforest, which is sensitive to the occurrences of severe droughts and fires. Integrated comparisons demonstrate that climatic variations rebuilt by Ic (temperature proxy) are consistent with the temperature change in the Northern Hemisphere, Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) variations in the northern Indian Ocean and southwest China, and aridity index (Iph) is linked to ENSO activity in the equatorial Pacific Ocean. At decadal timescale, there is an internal connection between ISM variability and ENSO activity in the tropical southwest China. Due to the modulation of ENSO activity, there is an antiphase relationship between temperature and ISM intensity, with a remarkably dry Medieval Warm Period (MWP), Modern Warming (MW) and a mostly wet Little Ice Age (LIA) during the last millennium. Spectral analysis of the climatic indices (Ic and Iph) indicated that the dominant cycle (~ 88 year) is a significant component of periodic solar activity variations. Our results confirmed that the possible forcing mechanism of such a "warm-dry and cool-wet" climate pattern is related to the coupling of solar periodic variations and ENSO variance spanning the tropical Indian Ocean and the "Indian subcontinent-southwest China". Projecting regional rainfall changes in a warmer climate attracts ongoing attention. However, large uncertainty still exists in multi-model projection. In this study, we introduce a bias-corrected method to correct the multi-model projection of changes in East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) rainfall based on the historical and RCP8.5 runs of 25 models from phase 5 of Coupled Model Intercomparison Project. Firstly, the total rainfall changes are separated into the thermodynamic component due to increased specific humidity and the dynamic component due to circulation changes. The thermodynamic component is corrected using the observed present-day rainfall and the increase rate of specific humidity based on the wet-get-wetter mechanism. On the other hand, the dynamic component with the circulation changes is corrected based on a "spatial emergent constraint" method, which is further validated by the perfect model approach. Together, these corrections give an integrated projection for EASM rainfall changes under global warming. Such an approach can improve the signal-to-noise ratio of projection effectively, from the original 0.73 of the multimodel mean to around 1.9. The corrected projection of EASM rainfall changes shows a pronounced increase in southern China, the northwest Pacific and a belt from northern China to northeastern China, and a weak increase in other EASM regions. Black carbon (BC) is one of the most important climate pollutants due to its strong positive radiative forcing on the climate system. However, long-term observation of BC is inadequate, and its trend remains unknown at both regional and global scales. In this study, using quality-controlled ground-based black carbon observations at 34 stations, the climatology of BC mass concentration during 2006–2017 in China was evaluated for the first time. The national annual average BC concentration was 3534 ng/m3, and the concentration exhibited large spatial variation, from a minimum of 272 ng/m3 to a maximum of 10,228 ng/m3. Significant seasonal variations were also observed. The peak BC concentration (4763 ± 3380 ng/m3) occurred during winter, followed by autumn (3752 ± 2623 ng/m3) and spring (3022 ± 2121 ng/m3). The lowest BC concentration occurred in summer (2583 ± 1780 ng/m3) due to decreased emissions, wet removal by precipitation, and diffusion induced by strong turbulent mixing. Additionally, the diurnal variability at about 80% of the stations in China showed a bimodal pattern. Daily maximum BC concentration during 0000–0600, 0600–1200, 1200–1800, and 1800–2400 local solar time accounted for 0, 41, 12, and 47% of the total, respectively. In particular, the diurnal and monthly variations in BC were explicitly analyzed at seven baseline stations. Surface BC has exhibited a significant declining trend across China, which is partly corroborated by the increase in single scattering albedo during the same period in Beijing. Also, the BC radiative forcing at the top of the atmosphere has declined at the rate of − 0.9 ± 0.1 W/m2/10 years over China, which differs from with the trend in the simulation using the CMIP6 emission. The decreasing BC has led to a larger reduction rate in atmospheric heating (− 3.7 ± 0.4 W/m2/10 years), implying a less stable atmosphere that facilitates the dispersion of air pollutants. Precipitation and temperature in freeze–thaw agricultural area have different patterns under global warming. In this study, a statistical relationship between large-scale changes in climate variables and local weather data was built by applying an automated statistical downscaling (ASD) model in the Sanjiang Plain in China. We evaluated the prediction ability of the ASD model in terms of spatial–temporal changes in freeze–thaw agricultural area, and the temperature and precipitation changes in the twenty-first century under the representative concentration pathway 4.5 (RCP4.5) scenario were estimated. The results revealed that the explained variances in temperature were higher than 0.93 during the calibration and verification periods, which demonstrated good simulation capacity. The R2 of precipitation was acceptable due to the randomness and complexity of daily precipitation. Based on the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory Earth System Model with the Generalized Ocean Layer Dynamics component (GFDL-CM3), the regional climate simulation provided good predictions. By 2100, the average, maximum and minimum temperatures in this area could increase by 2.0–2.5 °C, 2.5 °C and 2.5–4.0 °C, respectively. In terms of the spatial distribution, temperatures could increase faster in the northern region and slower in the central and southern regions. The warming trends in summer and winter were more significant than those in spring and autumn. There was no significant change in annual precipitation in the twenty-first century (increased approximately 10 mm by 2100). Precipitation decreased obviously in July and August (approximately 0.4 mm/day), and other months showed an increasing trend (approximately 0.5–0.9 mm/day). There will be large spatial variation of precipitation in the future changes. The results could serve as a reference for assessing non-point source pollution and agricultural management. In this study, we use four statistical downscaling methods to statistically downscale seven Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) Global Climate Models (GCMs) and project the changes in precipitation and temperature over China under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 emission scenarios. The four statistical downscaling methods are bias-correction and spatial downscaling (BCSD), bias-correction and climate imprint (BCCI), bias correction constructed analogues with quantile mapping reordering (BCCAQ), and cumulative distribution function transform (CDF-t). Though large inter-model variability exists in the distribution and magnitude of changes in projected precipitation, particularly for wet spell length (CWD), all downscaling methods generally project a consistent enhancement of precipitation in both summer and winter over most parts of China. For the arid and semiarid Northwest China, the shortened dry spell length (CDD) is accompanied by the pronouncedly intensified very wet days (R95p), as well as the increase in maximum 5-day precipitation amount (Rx5day). In contrast, southeastern regions may experience more consecutive dry days and more severe wet precipitation extremes. The projected changes from different downscaling techniques are fairly similar for temperature, apart from the diurnal temperature range for BCSD. Warming is projected across the whole domain with larger magnitude over the north and in winter under RCP8.5. More summer days and fewer frost days would appear in the future. The bias correction components of downscaling methods cause a higher degree of agreement among models, and the downscaled results generally retain the main climate change signal of the driving models. Due to spatial and temporal heterogeneity in moisture conditions, the responses of arid/humid climate regions (AHCR) to climate change are complex. In this study, we delineated the AHCR of China using information about the balance of the atmospheric water supply and demand collected from 581 meteorological stations over the past 50 years. We also analyzed inter-decadal shifts and linear trends in the AHCR and examined the influence of precipitation and reference evapotranspiration. The results indicate that the semi-arid region expanded significantly over the last five decades, mainly in northwest China, northern China, and the Tibetan Plateau and, by the 2000s, had increased by 33.53% relative to its extent in the 1960s; in contrast, the arid region shrank by 20.75%. The semi-arid region grew mainly because of transfers from the arid region in western China and the sub-humid region in eastern China. The decreased reference evapotranspiration and significantly increased precipitation together contributed to the expansion of the semi-arid region in northwest China and the Tibetan Plateau over the last 50 years. In contrast, the expansion of the semi-arid region in Inner Mongolia and northern China reflects the counteractive influence of decreased reference evapotranspiration and decreased precipitation. The effect of spring Arctic Stratospheric Ozone (ASO) changes on spring precipitation in China is analyzed using observations, reanalysis data, and the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model version 4 (WACCM4). We find that February-March mean ASO changes have a significant impact on April-May mean precipitation over Loess Plateau and middle-lower reaches of the Yangtze River—two important grain-producing regions with large populations. Changes in the polar vortex link the ASO to precipitation in China. Stratospheric circulation anomalies caused by ASO changes can propagate to the North Pacific. An increase in ASO leads to enhanced westerlies in the high and low latitudes of the North Pacific but weakened westerly in the mid-latitudes of the North Pacific. The circulation anomalies over the North Pacific, forced by the increase of ASO, can extend westwards to East Asia, leading to an abnormal anticyclone in the East Asian upper and middle troposphere, and an abnormal cyclone in the lower troposphere. This enhances the warm and humid airstream from Western Pacific to Chinese mainland and strengthens upwelling over Loess Plateau and middle-lower reaches of the Yangtze River. These conditions enhance precipitation in central China during positive ASO anomaly events and reduce precipitation during negative events. The WACCM4 simulations support the results from statistical analysis of observations and reanalysis data. This study investigates observed and modeled contributions of global sea surface temperature (SST) to China winter climate trends in 1960-2014, including increased precipitation, warming through about 1997, and cooling since then. Observations and Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project (AMIP) simulations with prescribed historical SST and sea ice show that tropical Indian Ocean (TIO) warming and increasing rainfall causes diabatic heating that generates a tropospheric wave train with anticyclonic 500-hPa height anomaly centers in the TIO or equatorial western Pacific (TIWP) and northeastern Eurasia (EA) and a cyclonic anomaly over China, referred to as the TIWP-EA wave train. The cyclonic anomaly causes Indochina moisture convergence and southwesterly moist flow that enhances South China precipitation, while the northern anticyclone enhances cold surges, sometimes causing severe ice storms. AMIP simulations show a 1960-1997 China cooling trend by simulating increasing instead of decreasing Arctic 500-hPa heights that move the northern anticyclone into Siberia, but enlarge the cyclonic anomaly so it still simulates realistic China precipitation trend patterns. A separate idealized TIO SST warming simulation simulates the TIWP-EA feature more realistically with correct precipitation patterns and supports the TIWP-EA teleconnection as the primary mechanism for long-term increasing precipitation in South China since 1960. Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) experiments simulate a reduced TIO SST warming trend and weak precipitation trends, so the TIWP-EA feature is absent and strong drying is simulated in South China for 1960-1997. Extreme heat (EH) over North China (NC) is affected by both large scale circulations and local topography, and could be categorized into foehn favorable and no-foehn types. In this study, the performance of a regional coupled model in simulating EH over NC was examined. The effects of regional air-sea coupling were also investigated by comparing the results with the corresponding atmosphere-alone regional model. On foehn favorable (no-foehn) EH days, a barotropic cyclonic (anticyclonic) anomaly is located to the northeast (northwest) of NC, while anomalous northwesterlies (southeasterlies) prevail over NC in the lower troposphere. In the uncoupled simulation, barotropic anticyclonic bias occurs over China on both foehn favorable and no-foehn EH days, and the northwesterlies in the lower troposphere on foehn favorable EH days are not obvious. These biases are significantly reduced in the regional coupled simulation, especially on foehn favorable EH days with wind anomalies skill scores improving from 0.38 to 0.47, 0.47 to 0.61 and 0.38 to 0.56 for horizontal winds at 250, 500 and 850 hPa, respectively. Compared with the uncoupled simulation, the reproduction of the longitudinal position of Northwest Pacific subtropical high (NPSH) and the spatial pattern of the low-level monsoon flow over East Asia are improved in the coupled simulation. Therefore, the anticyclonic bias over China is obviously reduced, and the proportion of EH days characterized by anticyclonic anomaly is more appropriate. With the consideration of spatial extension of heatwave events, two kind of regional heatwaves using absolute and relative thresholds, namely RHWs-A and RHWs-R, are investigated during 1959-2013. The temperature data is derived from the daily maximum temperatures (DMTs) of 587 stations in China. Totally 298 RHWs-A and 374 RHWs-R are identified during the past 55 years, and both of them are growing more frequent since the mid-1980s. By utilizing the cluster analysis, several typical spatial distributions of RHWs-A/RHWs-R are obtained. For RHWs-A, there are three clusters covering the southeastern, northwestern China and the lower reaches of Yangtze River, of which the southeastern cluster groups the most heatwaves. For RHWs-R, there are seven clusters distributed throughout the whole regions of China. The clusters in the northwestern and northeastern China are more stable than others for both RHWs-A and RHWs-R, and the northern clusters are of larger intensity than that of the southern ones. All RHWs-A/RHWs-R are accompanied by the anomalous high systems along with the reduced soil moisture. The southern clusters are controlled by Northwestern Pacific subtropical high (WPSH), and the northern ones are influenced by the mid-latitude high systems. The influences of atmospheric circulations and soil moisture on regional heatwaves are further demonstrated by two case analyses of the severe RHW-A in 2003 and the RHW-R in 2013. In this study, likely changes in extreme temperatures (including 16 indices) over China in response to global warming throughout the twenty-first century are investigated through the PRECIS regional climate modeling system. The PRECIS experiment is conducted at a spatial resolution of 25 km and is driven by a perturbed-physics ensemble to reflect spatial variations and model uncertainties. Simulations of present climate (1961–1990) are compared with observations to validate the model performance in reproducing historical climate over China. Results indicate that the PRECIS demonstrates reasonable skills in reproducing the spatial patterns of observed extreme temperatures over the most regions of China, especially in the east. Nevertheless, the PRECIS shows a relatively poor performance in simulating the spatial patterns of extreme temperatures in the western mountainous regions, where its driving GCM exhibits more uncertainties due to lack of insufficient observations and results in more errors in climate downscaling. Future spatio-temporal changes of extreme temperature indices are then analyzed for three successive periods (i.e., 2020s, 2050s and 2080s). The projected changes in extreme temperatures by PRECIS are well consistent with the results of the major global climate models in both spatial and temporal patterns. Furthermore, the PRECIS demonstrates a distinct superiority in providing more detailed spatial information of extreme indices. In general, all extreme indices show similar changes in spatial pattern: large changes are projected in the north while small changes are projected in the south. In contrast, the temporal patterns for all indices vary differently over future periods: the warm indices, such as SU, TR, WSDI, TX90p, TN90p and GSL are likely to increase, while the cold indices, such as ID, FD, CSDI, TX10p and TN10p, are likely to decrease with time in response to global warming. Nevertheless, the magnitudes of changes in all indices tend to decrease gradually with time, indicating the projected warming will begin to slow down in the late of this century. The daily temperatures from observational data, NCEP-2 and CFSR reanalysis data all exhibit long-range correlation (LRC) characteristics, which provides a test bed for assessing the reliability of reanalysis data. In this study, the quality of the NCEP-2 and CFSR data in China are evaluated on the basis of the LRC characteristics of daily temperatures, including daily average temperature (DAT), daily maximum temperature (DMAT), daily minimum temperature (DMIT), and diurnal temperature range (DTR). Compared with the observations, the quality of NCEP-2 daily temperature is relatively good in central and eastern Northwest China, and most of central and eastern China, especially for NCEP-2 DMAT. However, the NCEP-2 reanalysis data as well as CFSR has a significant difference with the LRC of the observations in most of Sichuan, Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and some areas of southwestern Xinjiang at a significance level of Alpha = 0.05. In general, the LRC characteristics of NCEP-2 daily temperature perform better than that of CFSR data. As far as DAT is concerned, CFSR perform worse in central and eastern Northwest China, and better than NCEP-2 only in South China and eastern Jiangnan. The quality of the CFSR DMAT is worse than that of NCEP-2 in central and eastern Northwest China, western Inner Mongolia, and eastern China. The quality of NCEP-2 DMIT is better than CFSR in central and eastern Northwest China, most of Inner Mongolia, and is worse than it in most of South China and eastern Jiangnan. Under the exacerbation of climate change, climate extreme events, especially for drought, happened frequently and intensively across the globe with greater spatial differences. We used the Standardized Precipitation-Evapotranspiration Index computed from the routine meteorological observations at 269 sites in Southwest China (SWC) to study the drought characteristics (e.g., extent, duration and intensity) and their decadal variations during 1971-2012. It was revealed that the drought, in responses to the coupling between decadal precipitation and potential evapotranspiration (PET) anomalies, differed among regions and periods. For the entire SWC, droughts in 1970s and 2000s+ was generally stronger than in 1980s and 1990s with respect to their spatial extent, duration and intensity, especially in 2000s+. It was well-known that drought was closely related with a lack of precipitation; however, the impact of atmospheric demand of evaporation (reflected by PET here) on drought (e.g., duration and intensity) was rarely paid enough attentions. To that end, a spatial multi-linear regression approach was proposed in this study for quantifying the contributions of decadal PET and precipitation variations to drought duration and intensity. We have found that the contributions of decadal PET anomalies to drought duration and intensity could exceed those of precipitation, e.g., during 1980s and 1990s in SWC. Additionally, despite the strongest droughts in 2000s+, it was suggested that PET could exert comparable impacts on drought anomalies as precipitation. All these findings implied that PET plays a critical role in drought event, which acts to amplify drought duration and intensity. A dynamical downscaling is performed to improve the regional climate simulation in China. It consists of using a variable resolution model LMDZ4 nested into three global climate models (GCMs): BCC-csm1-1-m, FGOALS-g2 and IPSL-CM5A-MR, respectively. The regional climate from different simulations is assessed in terms of surface air temperature and rainfalls through a comparison to observations (both station data and gridded data). The comparison includes climatic trends during the last 40 years, statistical distribution of sub-regional climate, and the seasonal cycle. For surface air temperature, a significant part of the improvement provided by LMDZ4 is related to the effect of surface elevation which is more realistic in high-resolution simulations; the rest is related to changes in regional or local atmospheric general circulation. All GCMs and the downscaling model LMDZ4 are, more or less, able to describe the spatial distribution of surface air temperature and precipitation in China. LMDZ4 does show its superiority, compared to GCMs, in depicting a good regional terrain including the Tibetan Plateau, the Sichuan Basin and the Qilian Mountains. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Community Land Model version 3.5 is driven by an observation-based meteorological dataset to simulate soil moisture over China for the period 1951-2008. A method for identifying the patterns of interannual variability that arise from slow (potentially predictable) and intraseasonal (unpredictable) variability is also applied; this allows identification of the sources of the predictability of seasonal soil moisture in China, during March-April-May (MAM), June-July-August (JJA), September-October-November (SON) and December-January-February (DJF). The potential predictability (slow-to-total) of the soil moisture above 1 m is high, with lowest value of 0.76 in JJA and highest value of 0.94 in DJF. The spatial distribution of the potential predictability comprises a northwest-southeast gradient, with a minimum center over East China and a maximum center over the northwest. The most important source of predictability is from the soil moisture persistence, which generally accounts for more than 50 % of the variability in soil moisture. The SSTs in the Indian Ocean, the North Atlantic and the eastern tropical Pacific Oceans are also identified as important sources of variability in the soil moisture, during MAM, JJA and SON/DJF, respectively. In addition, prolonged linear trends in each season are an important source. Using the slow principal component time series as predictands, a statistical scheme for the seasonal forecasting of soil moisture across China is developed. The prediction skills, in terms of the percentage of explained variance for the verification period (1992-2008), are 59, 51, 62 and 77 % during MAM-DJF, respectively. Urbanization plays an important role in human-induced climate change at the regional scale through altered land-atmosphere interactions over urban areas. In this study, the impacts of future urbanization in China on climate are investigated. The Weather Research and Forecasting model is used to downscale future projections using Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP) 4.5 simulations from the Community Earth System Model. Results for 2050 show decreased latent and increased sensible heat fluxes over the urban area, therefore leading to higher surface temperatures and less humidity. Future climate projections reveal that urbanization produces strong warming effects, up to 1.9 °C at regional and local/urban scales, which is comparable to the magnitude of greenhouse gas forcing under the RCP 4.5 scenario. Greater urban warming effects are projected during night and summer, which can be attributed to the high heat capacity of built-up areas. The impacts of urbanization on precipitation show varying effects primarily in summer-both increases and decreases depending on spatial scale-related to both local moisture deficits and large-scale circulation changes. Urbanization could strengthen the East Asian summer monsoon in southern China in summer, and slightly weaken it in eastern China in winter. The two main focuses of this study are a comparison of the general circulation models (GCMs) from Phase 5 of the Coupled Model Inter-Comparison Project (CMIP5) and an assessment of the surface air temperature under multiple climate scenarios in a high middle latitude area of China. In the past 55 years temperatures in this area have shown an obvious upward trend (a rise of 1.50 °C), and another important change during this time period was a significant alteration in tillage practices that occurred in 1986. Using methods and tools such as average deviation, the Taylor figure and the space techniques rating (SS), time sequence related coefficient, and the M2 index, a comprehensive spatial-temporal assessment was performed based on the CMIP5 models. The simulations provided by the models had certain common features, but there were also significant differences. The three best models (CanCM4, INMCM4, and IPSL-CM5A-MR) have a common characteristic: the institutions where they were developed are located at latitudes that are similar to or higher than the latitude of the study area. Future climate changes were analyzed by simulating a representative concentration pathway 4.5/8.5 (RCP4.5/RCP8.5) of emission scenarios with a multi-model ensemble. The temperatures under the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios have a certain upward trend, with increases of 2.24 and 5.44 °C, respectively. From a spatial perspective, the distributions of the temperature change trend showed a southwest to northeast step increase under both scenarios, but the warming trend in the area of each lattice point under the RCP4.5 scenario is much lower than that of the RCP8.5 scenario. There are no obvious changes in the spatial distribution of the accumulated intensity and frequency of the regional air temperature in the three periods (2016-2035, 2036-2065, and 2066-2095) under the two scenarios. Long-term changes in surface wind speed (SWS) are influenced by both large-scale circulation and relative resistance. The effects of large-scale circulation are embodied by the pressure-gradient force (PGF), which is mostly a natural factor, whereas the resistance is due to the drag between the air and the surface as well as in the different boundary layers, which is mainly caused by the anthropogenic land use and cover change (LUCC). We performed experiments using a simple dynamical method in which a balance among the PGF, Coriolis force, and drag is reached to separate the effects of the PGF and LUCC on the SWS, and then, to quantitatively estimate the influence of the LUCC on the SWS over the East China Plain (ECP) during the period 1980-2011. The results show a distinct decrease in the SWS in the station observation data with a rate of −0.13 m s (10 year), but there is no statistically significant long-term trend in the reanalysis data. At the same time, the drag coefficient induced by the LUCC shows an increasing trend, which is consistent with the 30 % increase in the rate of urbanization during the study period. In addition, the PGF fluctuates with distinct seasonal and interannual changes, and it has an insignificant long-term increasing trend during the period 1980-2011. At the same time, the spatial distribution of the linear trend coefficient of the normalized PGF is inconsistent with that of the SWS, but the linear trend coefficient of the normalized drag coefficient shows a similar spatial distribution as the SWS. Therefore, the increase in the drag coefficient induced by the LUCC should account for the long-term decrease in the SWS. The difference between the model wind speed, in which the drag coefficient is constrained to its value in the year 1980, and the observed wind speed at each station (SWSD) can reflect the influence of the LUCC on the SWS. Furthermore, the long-term changes in East Asian monsoons may not completely account for the observed wind speed decrease near the surface in the ECP region, but it is an important factor in the SWS. Based on daily rainfall data collected at 395 gauge stations over eastern China during 1979-2009, the variation in light rain days with intensities of 0.1-10 mm day in the summer half of the year was analyzed. Results indicate that both the light rain amount and the number of light rain days decline distinctly, with trends of −4.89 mm (10 year) and −2.48 days (10 year), respectively. The first two principal components of EOF analysis on light rain days not only show a long-term decrease, but also depict regional differences; specifically, light rain days decline more distinctly in northeastern and southern regions of eastern China. Spatial and temporal features, as well as the periods derived from the EOF analysis of temperature, precipitable water content, and relative humidity in the lower troposphere, coincide with those of light rain days. Composite analysis also suggests that there are fewer light rain days in years with lower relative humidity and precipitable water content in the lower troposphere, while there are fewer light rain days in years with higher tropospheric temperatures. According to the Clausius-Clapeyron equation and the relative humidity equations, relative humidity over eastern China during the period studied decreases by 5.5 % due to lower-tropospheric warming, and decreases by 0.16 % because of the decrease in specific humidity in the same period. This study examines persistent and short-lived heavy precipitation events (PHPEs and SHPEs, respectively) in South China during summer (July-September) 1975-2009 in association with large-scale circulation and moisture processes at different timescales. Compared to SHPEs, PHPEs are characterized by long-lasting enhanced convection and cyclonic moisture circulation as well as strengthened moisture convergence over South China. Examination of environmental variables at different timescales suggests that intraseasonal and synoptic components play a deterministic role in regulating the overall changes in convection and moisture convergence, while the low-frequency background state plays only a marginal role. Further analysis of the moisture divergence terms also reveals that the overall changes in moisture divergence during PHPEs and SHPEs stem primarily from variations in the intraseasonal and synoptic wind fields rather than in the humidity fields. Overall, it is found that the location and strength of the intraseasonal oscillation (ISO) and the synoptic disturbances play a decisive role in controlling the severity and duration of rainfall events over South China. The synchronization and persistence of the enhanced convection and moisture circulation of the ISO and synoptic disturbances jointly contribute to prolonged heavy precipitation over South China, while the weakening and asynchrony of the associated convection and moisture circulation at different timescales result in rainfall events of weaker intensity and shorter duration. In this study, a groundwater exploitation scheme is incorporated into the regional climate model, RegCM4, and the climatic responses to anthropogenic alteration of groundwater are then investigated over the Haihe River Basin in Northern China where groundwater resources are overexploited. The scheme models anthropogenic groundwater exploitation and water consumption, which are further divided into agricultural irrigation, industrial use and domestic use. Four 30-year on-line exploitation simulations and one control test without exploitation are conducted using the developed model with different water demands estimated from relevant socioeconomic data. The results reveal that the groundwater exploitation and water consumption cause increasing wetting and cooling effects on the local land surface and in the lower troposphere, along with a rapidly declining groundwater table in the basin. The cooling and wetting effects also extended outside the basin, especially in the regions downwind of the prevailing westerly wind, where increased precipitation occurs. The changes in the four exploitation simulations positively relate to their different water demands and are highly non-linear. The largest changes in climatic variables usually appear in spring and summer, the time of crop growth. To gain further insights into the direct changes in land-surface variables due to groundwater exploitation regardless of the atmospheric feedbacks, three off-line simulations using the land surface model Community Land Model version 3.5 are also conducted to distinguish these direct changes on the land surface of the basin. The results indicate that the direct changes of land-surface variables respond linearly to water demand if the climatic feedbacks are not considered, while non-linear climatic feedbacks enhance the differences in the on-line exploitation simulations. Summer rainfall over China has shown decadal variability in the past half century, which has resulted in major north-south shifts in rainfall with important implications for flooding and water resource management. This study has demonstrated how multi-century climate model simulations can be used to explore interdecadal natural variability in the climate system in order to address important questions around recent changes in Chinese summer rainfall, and whether or not anthropogenic climate change is playing a role. Using a 1,000-year simulation of HadCM3 with constant pre-industrial external forcing, the dominant modes of total and interdecadal natural variability in Chinese summer rainfall have been analysed. It has been shown that these modes are comparable in magnitude and in temporal and spatial characteristics to those observed in the latter part of the twentieth century. However, despite 1,000 years of model simulation it has not been possible to demonstrate that these modes are related to similar variations in the global circulation and surface temperature forcing occurring during the latter half of the twentieth century. This may be in part due to model biases. Consequently, recent changes in the spatial distribution of Chinese summer rainfall cannot be attributed solely to natural variability, nor has it been possible to eliminate the likelihood that anthropogenic climate change has been the driving factor. National Centers for Environmental Prediction recently upgraded its operational seasonal forecast system to the fully coupled climate modeling system referred to as CFSv2. CFSv2 has been used to make seasonal climate forecast retrospectively between 1982 and 2009 before it became operational. In this study, we evaluate the model's ability to predict the summer temperature and precipitation over China using the 120 9-month reforecast runs initialized between January 1 and May 26 during each year of the reforecast period. These 120 reforecast runs are evaluated as an ensemble forecast using both deterministic and probabilistic metrics. The overall forecast skill for summer temperature is high while that for summer precipitation is much lower. The ensemble mean reforecasts have reduced spatial variability of the climatology. For temperature, the reforecast bias is lead time-dependent, i.e., reforecast JJA temperature become warmer when lead time is shorter. The lead time dependent bias suggests that the initial condition of temperature is somehow biased towards a warmer condition. CFSv2 is able to predict the summer temperature anomaly in China, although there is an obvious upward trend in both the observation and the reforecast. Forecasts of summer precipitation with dynamical models like CFSv2 at the seasonal time scale and a catchment scale still remain challenge, so it is necessary to improve the model physics and parameterizations for better prediction of Asian monsoon rainfall. The probabilistic skills of temperature and precipitation are quite limited. Only the spatially averaged quantities such as averaged summer temperature over the Northeast China of CFSv2 show higher forecast skill, of which is able to discriminate between event and non-event for three categorical forecasts. The potential forecast skill shows that the above and below normal events can be better forecasted than normal events. Although the shorter the forecast lead time is, the higher deterministic prediction skill appears, the probabilistic prediction skill does not increase with decreased lead time. The ensemble size does not play a significant role in affecting the overall probabilistic forecast skill although adding more members improves the probabilistic forecast skill slightly. Climate changes over China from the present (1990-1999) to future (2046-2055) under the A1FI (fossil fuel intensive) and A1B (balanced) emission scenarios are projected using the Regional Climate Model version 3 (RegCM3) nests with the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Community Climate System Model (CCSM). For the present climate, RegCM3 downscaling corrects several major deficiencies in the driving CCSM, especially the wet and cold biases over the Sichuan Basin. As compared with CCSM, RegCM3 produces systematic higher spatial pattern correlation coefficients with observations for precipitation and surface air temperature except during winter. The projected future precipitation changes differ largely between CCSM and RegCM3, with strong regional and seasonal dependence. The RegCM3 downscaling produces larger regional precipitation trends (both decreases and increases) than the driving CCSM. Contrast to substantial trend differences projected by CCSM, RegCM3 produces similar precipitation spatial patterns under different scenarios except autumn. Surface air temperature is projected to consistently increase by both CCSM and RegCM3, with greater warming under A1FI than A1B. The result demonstrates that different scenarios can induce large uncertainties even with the same RCM-GCM nesting system. Largest temperature increases are projected in the Tibetan Plateau during winter and high-latitude areas in the northern China during summer under both scenarios. This indicates that high elevation and northern regions are more vulnerable to climate change. Notable discrepancies for precipitation and surface air temperature simulated by RegCM3 with the driving conditions of CCSM versus the model for interdisciplinary research on climate under the same A1B scenario further complicated the uncertainty issue. The geographic distributions for precipitation difference among various simulations are very similar between the present and future climate with very high spatial pattern correlation coefficients. The result suggests that the model present climate biases are systematically propagate into the future climate projections. The impacts of the model present biases on projected future trends are, however, highly nonlinear and regional specific, and thus cannot be simply removed by a linear method. An interactive system coupling the Beijing Climate Center atmospheric general circulation model (BCC_AGCM2.0.1) and the Canadian Aerosol Module (CAM) with updated aerosol emission sources was developed to investigate the global distributions of optical properties and direct radiative forcing (DRF) of typical aerosols and their impacts on East Asian climate. The simulated total aerosol optical depth (AOD), single scattering albedo, and asymmetry parameter were generally consistent with the ground-based measurements. Under all-sky conditions, the simulated global annual mean DRF at the top of the atmosphere was −2.03 W m for all aerosols including sulfate, organic carbon (OC), black carbon (BC), dust, and sea salt; the global annual mean DRF was −0.23 W m for sulfate, BC, and OC aerosols. The sulfate, BC, and OC aerosols led to decreases of 0.58° and 0.14 mm day in the JJA means of surface temperature and precipitation rate in East Asia. The differences of land-sea surface temperature and surface pressure were reduced in East Asian monsoon region due to these aerosols, thus leading to the weakening of East Asian summer monsoon. Atmospheric dynamic and thermodynamic were affected due to the three types of aerosol, and the southward motion between 15°N and 30°N in lower troposphere was increased, which slowed down the northward transport of moist air carried by the East Asian summer monsoon, and moreover decreased the summer monsoon precipitation in south and east China. Based on daily maximum and minimum surface air temperature and precipitation records at 303 meteorological stations in China, the spatial and temporal distributions of indices of climate extremes are analyzed during 1961-2003. Twelve indices of extreme temperature and six of extreme precipitation are studied. Temperature extremes have high correlations with the annual mean temperature, which shows a significant warming of 0.27°C/decade, indicating that changes in temperature extremes reflect the consistent warming. Stations in northeastern, northern, northwestern China have larger trend magnitudes, which are accordance with the more rapid mean warming in these regions. Countrywide, the mean trends for cold days and cold nights have decreased by −0.47 and −2.06 days/decade respectively, and warm days and warm nights have increased by 0.62 and 1.75 days/decade, respectively. Over the same period, the number of frost days shows a statistically significant decreasing trend of −3.37 days/decade. The length of the growing season and the number of summer days exhibit significant increasing trends at rates of 3.04 and 1.18 days/decade, respectively. The diurnal temperature range has decreased by −0.18°C/decade. Both the annual extreme lowest and highest temperatures exhibit significant warming trends, the former warming faster than the latter. For precipitation indices, regional annual total precipitation shows an increasing trend and most other precipitation indices are strongly correlated with annual total precipitation. Average wet day precipitation, maximum 1-day and 5-day precipitation, and heavy precipitation days show increasing trends, but only the last is statistically significant. A decreasing trend is found for consecutive dry days. For all precipitation indices, stations in the Yangtze River basin, southeastern and northwestern China have the largest positive trend magnitudes, while stations in the Yellow River basin and in northern China have the largest negative magnitudes. This is inconsistent with changes of water vapor flux calculated from NCEP/NCAR reanalysis. Large scale atmospheric circulation changes derived from NCEP/NCAR reanalysis grids show that a strengthening anticyclonic circulation, increasing geopotential height and rapid warming over the Eurasian continent have contributed to the changes in climate extremes in China. This study documents the decadal changes of the summer precipitation in East China, with increased rainfall in the Huang-Huai River region (HR) and decreased in the Yangtze River region (YR) during 2000-2008 in comparison to 1979-1999. The main features of the atmospheric circulation related to the increased precipitation in the HR are the strengthened ascending motion and slightly increased air humidity, which is partly due to the weakened moisture transport out of the HR to the western tropical Pacific (associated with the weakened westerly over East Asia and the warming center over the Lake Baikal). The rainfall decrease in the YR is related to the weakened ascending motion and reduced water vapor content, which is mainly related to the weakened southwesterly moisture flux into the YR (associated with the eastward recession of the Western Pacific Subtropical High). The global sea surface temperature (SST) also shows significant changes during 2000-2008 relative to 1979-1999. The shift of the Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) to a negative phase probably induces the warming over the Lake Baikal and the weakened westerly jet through the air-sea interaction in the Pacific, and thus changes the summer precipitation pattern in East China. Numerical experiments using an atmospheric general circulation model, with prescribed all-Pacific SST anomalies of 2000-2008 relative to 1979-1999, also lend support to the PDO's contribution to the warming over the Lake Baikal and the weakened westerlies over East China. We present a Palmer Drought Severity Index reconstruction ( r = 0.61, P < 0.01) from 1440 to 2007 for the southeastern Tibetan Plateau, based on tree rings of the forest fir ( Abies forrestii). Persistent decadal dry intervals were found in the 1440s–1460s, 1560s–1580s, 1700s, 1770s, 1810s, 1860s and 1980s, and the extreme wet epochs were the 1480s–1490s, 1510s–1520s, 1590s, 1610s–1630s, 1720s–1730s, 1800s, 1830s, 1870s, 1930s, 1950s and after the 1990s. Comparisons of our record with those identified in other moisture related reconstructions for nearby regions showed that our reconstructed droughts were relatively consistent with those found in other regions of Indochina, suggesting similar drought regimes. Spectral peaks of 2.3–5.5 years may be indicative of ENSO activity, as also suggested by negative correlations with SSTs in the eastern equatorial and southeastern Pacific Ocean. Significant multidecadal spectral peaks of 29.2–40.9 and 56.8–60.2 years were identified. As indicated by the spatial correlation patterns, the decadal-scale variability may be linked to SST variations in the northern Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
