In this study, using the NCAR Community Earth System Model (CESM1.2.2), we investigate the changes in the characteristics of the summer monsoon low pressure systems (LPS) over India in a twenty-first century climate change simulation corresponding to the RCP8.5 scenario. A slight weakening in monsoon circulation and an increase in mean summer monsoon precipitation over India are simulated in a warmer climate, consistent with several previous studies. The weakening of the monsoon circulation is associated with a pair of anticyclonic anomalies straddling the equator in the low level, weakening the cross-equatorial monsoonal flow from the southern hemisphere. These low-level circulation anomalies appear to be robust features in the equatorial Indian Ocean under climate change. An increase in moisture flux is also simulated over the Indian subcontinent. However, we find no significant change in the number of LPS or their spatial distribution under the RCP8.5 scenario. This is attributed to a small but non-significant decrease in the low-level meridional cyclonic shear in zonal winds. An increase in the intensity and frequency of extreme precipitation over India in a warmer world is simulated and is likely associated with an increase in moisture content. Our study shows that the fractional contribution of LPS to mean and extreme precipitation over India in a warmer world is likely unchanged, but the frequency and intensity of extreme events are larger. Because of the diversity in the results from single model studies on LPS characteristics in a warmer world, a future study that uses CMIP6 multi-model data would be valuable to assess the robustness and the uncertainty in changes in LPS activities under climate change. This paper provides a synoptic view of extreme monsoon floods on all the nine large rivers of South Asia and their association with the excess (above-normal) monsoon rainfall periods. Annual maximum flood series for 18 gauging stations spread over four countries (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal) and long-term monsoon rainfall data were analyzed to ascertain whether the extreme floods were clustered in time and whether they coincided with multi-decade excess monsoon rainfall epochs at the basin level. Simple techniques, such as the Cramer's t-test, regression and Mann-Kendall (MK) tests and Hurst method were used to evaluate the trends and patterns of the flood and rainfall series. MK test reveals absence of any long-term tendency in all the series. However, the Cramer's t test and Hurst-Mandelbrot rescaled range statistic provide evidence that both rainfall and flood time series are persistent. Using the Cramer's t-test the excess monsoon epochs for each basin were identified. The excess monsoon periods for different basins were found to be highly asynchronous with respect to duration as well as the beginning and end. Three main conclusions readily emerge from the analyses. Extreme floods (>90th percentile) in South Asia show a tendency to cluster in time. About three-fourth of the extreme floods have occurred during the excess monsoon periods between ~1840 and 2000 AD, implying a noteworthy link between the two. The present study uses observation-based gridded air temperature and precipitation datasets to investigate the spatiotemporal changes in meteorological drought from 1981 to 2020 in South Asia (SA). The drought characteristics i.e., duration, area, frequency, intensity, and severity are calculated using Run theory and the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) on annual and seasonal timescales. SA is divided into four homogeneous subregions using the k-means clustering algorithm, while the trends were estimated using Sen's Slope estimator and modified Mann-Kendall (MMK) test. A state-of-the-art Bayesian Dynamic Linear (BDL) model was employed to assess the sub-regional drought variability and their possible links with large-scale atmospheric drivers such as the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). It is found that the SA winter season experienced a significant drying long-term trend, especially southwestern and northeastern parts of SA. Drought durations show dipolar patterns with longer drought duration in the southwestern compared to the northern parts of SA. Notably, arid and semi-arid regions have shown significant drying trends in terms of their area, frequency, and severity, implying that meteorological droughts are relatively more severe in those regions. Similarly, the relationship varies over time between drought variability and climate drivers. In particular, the IOD has an impact on drought episodes over southwest SA relative to the northern parts and is mostly affected by the Sea surface temperature (SST) variability. The study results contribute to a better understanding of the meteorological drought characteristics over SA, which is important for disaster risk managers and policymakers to mitigate drought impacts. Self-organizing map (SOM) is used to simulate summer daily precipitation over the Yangtze–Huaihe river basin in Eastern China, including future projections. SOM shows good behaviors in terms of probability distribution of daily rainfall and spatial distribution of rainfall indices, as well as consistency of multi-model simulations. Under RCP4.5 Scenario, daily rainfall at most sites (63%) is projected to shift towards larger values. For the early 21st century (2016–2035), precipitation in the central basin increases, yet decreases occur over the middle reaches of the Yangtze River as well as a part of its southeast area. For the late 21st century (2081–2100), the mean precipitation and extreme indices experience an overall increase except for a few southeast stations. The total precipitation in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River and in its south area is projected to increase from 7% at 1.5 °C global warming to 11% at 2 °C, while the intensity enhancement is more significant in southern and western sites of the domain. A clustering allows to regroup all SOM nodes into four distinct regimes. Such regional synoptic regimes show remarkable stability for future climate. The overall intensification of precipitation in future climate is linked to the occurrence-frequency rise of a wet regime which brings longitudinally closer the South Asia High (eastward extended) and the Western Pacific Subtropical High (westward extended), as well as the reduction of a dry pattern which makes the two atmospheric centers of action move away from each other. Severe El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) droughts that occurred in southwest China during the last millennium have exerted important impacts on natural ecosystems and human society. Fossil phytoliths in high-resolution (~ 7 year) fluvial sediments in the monsoon rainforest are studied to reveal the influence of ENSO activity on tropical southwest China. The phytolith records together with multiproxy analysis indicate that three phases of distinctively warm-dry and cool-wet climate pattern have exerted profound influences on the sedimentary environment and tropical monsoon rainforest, which is sensitive to the occurrences of severe droughts and fires. Integrated comparisons demonstrate that climatic variations rebuilt by Ic (temperature proxy) are consistent with the temperature change in the Northern Hemisphere, Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) variations in the northern Indian Ocean and southwest China, and aridity index (Iph) is linked to ENSO activity in the equatorial Pacific Ocean. At decadal timescale, there is an internal connection between ISM variability and ENSO activity in the tropical southwest China. Due to the modulation of ENSO activity, there is an antiphase relationship between temperature and ISM intensity, with a remarkably dry Medieval Warm Period (MWP), Modern Warming (MW) and a mostly wet Little Ice Age (LIA) during the last millennium. Spectral analysis of the climatic indices (Ic and Iph) indicated that the dominant cycle (~ 88 year) is a significant component of periodic solar activity variations. Our results confirmed that the possible forcing mechanism of such a "warm-dry and cool-wet" climate pattern is related to the coupling of solar periodic variations and ENSO variance spanning the tropical Indian Ocean and the "Indian subcontinent-southwest China". Regional Climate Models (RCMs) are increasingly used to add small-scale processes at higher grid resolution that are not represented by their Lateral Boundary Conditions (LBCs). Rossby Centre regional atmospheric model, RCA4, has downscaled three Global Climate Models (GCMs), namely, CNRM-CM5, EC-EARTH and GFDL-ESM2M in the COordinated Regional climate Downscaling EXperiment (CORDEX) framework for Middle East North Africa (MENA) and South Asia (SA) domains. Arabian Peninsula is covered in both MENA and SA simulations, which gives a unique opportunity to study the effects of CORDEX domain and LBCs on the simulation of temperature and precipitation by RCM. It is examined by calculating the differences between MENA and SA simulations for different driving GCMs in the historical (1976–2005) and future (2071–2100) periods under RCP8.5 emission scenario, for both summer (dry) and winter (wet) seasons. RCA4 performs generally well when simulating the observed temperature and precipitation patterns, with some local wet biases over Asir Mountains and cold bias over the north eastern parts of Saudi Arabia. The simulations of temperature seem to be very sensitive to the simulation domain (i.e., MENA and SA) and less sensitive to different LBCs, whereas in case of precipitation LBCs seems to play a dominant role. The MENA simulations generally project about 2 °C warmer and drier climate compared to SA simulations by the end of this century, which is comparable to the differences arising due to different LBCs and climate change. Understanding the response of the South Asian monsoon (SAM) system to global climate change is an interesting scientific problem that has enormous implications from the societal viewpoint. While the CMIP3 projections of future changes in monsoon precipitation used in the IPCC AR4 show major uncertainties, there is a growing recognition that the rapid increase of moisture in a warming climate can potentially enhance the stability of the large-scale tropical circulations. In this work, the authors have examined the stability of the SAM circulation based on diagnostic analysis of climate datasets over the past half century; and addressed the issue of likely future changes in the SAM in response to global warming using simulations from an ultra-high resolution (20 km) global climate model. Additional sensitivity experiments using a simplified atmospheric model have been presented to supplement the overall findings. The results here suggest that the intensity of the boreal summer monsoon overturning circulation and the associated southwesterly monsoon flow have significantly weakened during the past 50-years. The weakening trend of the monsoon circulation is further corroborated by a significant decrease in the frequency of moderate-to-heavy monsoon rainfall days and upward vertical velocities particularly over the narrow mountain ranges of the Western Ghats. Based on simulations from the 20-km ultra high-resolution model, it is argued that a stabilization (weakening) of the summer monsoon Hadley-type circulation in response to global warming can potentially lead to a weakened large-scale monsoon flow thereby resulting in weaker vertical velocities and reduced orographic precipitation over the narrow Western Ghat mountains by the end of the twenty-first century. Supplementary experiments using a simplified atmospheric model indicate a high sensitivity of the large-scale monsoon circulation to atmospheric stability in comparison with the effects of condensational heating.
