Recent research indicates that the midlatitude oceanic frontal zones are the key regions of ocean–atmosphere interaction. The thermal condition of midlatitude ocean in frontal zones can affect the atmosphere efficiently through both diabatic heating and transient eddy feedback. In this study, the wintertime SST variability in the subarctic frontal zone (SAFZ) of the North Pacific and the associated ocean–atmosphere interaction mechanism are examined based on observational and theoretical analyses. It is found that the SAFZ-related SST anomaly is characterized as a large-scale interannual mode that can persist during the whole winter, and that its evolution is accompanied with local ocean–atmosphere interaction processes. The initial anticyclonic surface wind anomaly associated with the weakened Aleutian Low forces a large-scale warm SST anomaly in midlatitude North Pacific by driving northward Ekman flow and downward heat flux. With the increase of SST anomaly, the air-sea heat flux exchange reverses, indicating that the ocean starts to heat the atmosphere. In addition to increasing the diabatic heating, the warm SST anomaly strengthens the SST gradient in the north part of SAFZ. The low-level atmospheric baroclinicity is adjusted to synchronize with the SAFZ correspondingly due to oceanic thermal influence, causing change of transient eddy activities. Though all the ocean-induced diabatic heating, transient eddy heating and transient eddy vorticity forcing are enhanced over SAFZ, the last physical process plays the most important role in shifting and maintaining the equivalent barotropic atmospheric circulation anomalies. Therefore, the ocean–atmosphere interaction provides a mechanism for the development and maintenance of SAFZ-related anomalies of the North Pacific ocean–atmosphere system throughout the winter. The Tibetan Plateau (TP) has experienced an accelerated wintertime warming in recent decades under global warming, but consensus on its causes has not yet been reached. This study quantifies the processes of the warming through analyzing surface temperature budget and surface energy balance. It is found that increased diabatic heating (73%) and warm advection (27%) by an anomalous anticyclone southeast of TP are two primary processes determining the surface air warming. The former is caused by a significant increase of the TP skin temperature which warms the near surface atmosphere through increasing upward surface sensible heat flux. The land surface warming is attributed to increased absorbed radiation fluxes in which three processes are identified to be major contributors. While outside forcing which is primarily due to increased anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases contributes to the warming by 25% through increasing downward longwave radiation, two types of local positive feedbacks which are triggered by the land surface warming are found to contribute to most of the warming. One is the snow-albedo feedback which accounts for 47% of the surface warming by increasing surface absorption of incident solar radiation. The other is the moisture process feedback which accounts for 28% of the surface warming. The surface warming which works with increased soil water due to increased precipitation in the preceding seasons tends to promote surface evaporation and moisten the atmosphere aloft over the eastern TP, which, in turn, tends to increase downward longwave radiation and cause a further surface warming. An extreme East Asian Meiyu rainfall in both amount and duration occurred along Yangtze River valley during June–July of 2020, however, possible mid-high latitude signatures causing this super Meiyu have not been well identified. This study explores the cause of the Meiyu rainfall from the aspect of anomalous Eurasian blocking activities with a two-dimensional blocking index, using the Japanese 55-yr Reanalysis for 1979–2020. The major findings are as follows. Variabilities of the Eurasian blocking activities are primarily characterized by a tripole pattern with three centers over the Baltic Sea, the Ural Mountains, and the Sea of Okhotsk, respectively. The tripole pattern is associated with two zonally-oriented Rossby wavetrains which may originate from the rainfall anomaly in central Europe. Corresponding to a positive phase of the tripole pattern, the northern wavetrain through energy dispersion tends to induce an anomalous anticyclone (i.e., enhanced blocking) over the Sea of Okhotsk, while the southern wavetrain tends to induce an anomalous cyclone over the Sea of Japan which is conducive to a southward intrusion of more high-latitude cold airs. Consequently, a meridional dipole anomalous circulation pattern over the northeastern Asia is formed, favoring more East Asian Meiyu rainfall. In 2020, the Eurasian blocking activities exhibit a significantly positive phase of the tripole pattern and considerably contribute to the super Meiyu. The results identified in this study highlight the importance of the Eurasian blocking activities in the East Asian Meiyu and provide a new perspective for the prediction of the Meiyu rainfall with mid-high latitude signatures. The East Asian subtropical westerly jet (EASWJ) is one of the most crucial subtropical circulation systems affecting the precipitation over East Asia. Based on the ERA5 dataset, the dominant modes of the intraseasonal variability of the EASWJ in early (May and June) and late (July and August) summer are investigated, respectively, through the empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis. The EOF1 in early summer is characterized by the anomalous westerlies centered over the North China and anomalous easterlies centered over the south of Japan. This mode is led by the south-eastward propagating wave train initiating from the Barents Sea, where the ridge of the wave train coincides with an anomalous warm advection in the low level, due to the negative phase of Arctic Dipole (AD). Since lag − 4 days, the East Asia/Western Ruassia (EAWR) teleconnection contributes to the wave trains. The EOF1 in late summer is characterized by the anomalous westerlies centered over the south of Baikal and anomalous easterlies centered over the Central China, which is affected by the two wave trains along different directions. One wave train propagate zonally across Eurasia initiated from North Atlantic, where significant signal of East Atlantic (EA) teleconnection is found as a precursor. When the wave train disperses downstream to Eurasia, the EAWR play a dominant role on the growth and persistence of the EASWJ variability. The other one is similar to the East Asia–Pacific (EAP) teleconnection propagating poleward from the Southern Asia and Western North Pacific, where the active convection anomalies may be a key driver. The intraseasonal wave trains that influence the EASWJ are different between early and late summer probably due to the discrepancies of background status, such as the background temperature gradient and the curviness of the jet climatology. Interaction between synoptic eddy and mean flow plays a crucial role in maintaining midlatitude westerly jet. In this study, climatologies of synoptic eddy activities and their feedback onto midlatitude jet for 1980–2016 are evaluated and compared through analyzing daily data from five atmospheric reanalyses with different resolutions including one coarse-resolution reanalysis (NCEP2) and four fine-resolution reanalyses (ERA-Interim, JRA-55, MERRA-2, and CFSR). Horizontal resolutions of the atmospheric models generating those reanalyses are approximately equivalent to 210, 79, 60, 50, and 38 km, respectively. Results show that the eddy activities and their feedback onto the midlatitude jet in those fine-resolution reanalyses are consistently and significantly stronger than those in the coarse-resolution reanalysis (NCEP2). The maximal relative increases that are found to occur primarily in the midlatitudes of the Southern Hemisphere are estimated to be up to 55% for the baroclinicity, 53% for the eddy energetics, 59% for the eddy forcing, and even 85% for the eddy feedback onto the mean flow. Those increases are reasonably conjectured to be related to increased model resolutions, since the synoptic eddy genesis is proportional to the low-level atmospheric meridional temperature gradient which is sensitive to the meridional resolution of atmospheric models. Although the coarse-resolution reanalysis resolves synoptic eddies insufficiently and thus underestimates their feedback onto the mean flow, the magnitudes of eddy-driven jets are almost the same among five reanalyses, implying a mismatch between the eddy feedback and the eddy-driven jet in the coarse-resolution reanalysis. The Arctic warming, especially during winter, has been almost twice as large as the global average since the late 1990s, which is known as the Arctic amplification. Yet linkage between the amplified Arctic warming and the midlatitude change is still under debate. This study examines the decadal changes of wintertime poleward heat and moisture transports between two 18-year epochs (1999–2016 and 1981–1998) with five atmospheric reanalyses. It is found that the wintertime Arctic warming induces an amplification of the high latitude stationary wave component of zonal wavenumber one but a weakening of the wavenumber two. These stationary wave changes enhance poleward heat and moisture transports, which are conducive to further Arctic warming and moistening, acting as a positive feedback onto the Arctic warming. Meanwhile, the Arctic warming reduces atmospheric baroclinicity and thus weakens synoptic eddy activities in the high latitudes. The decreased transient eddy activities reduce poleward heat and moisture transports, which decrease the Arctic temperature and moisture, acting as a negative feedback onto the Arctic warming. Since the increased poleward heat transport by stationary waves is nearly cancelled by the decreased transport by transient eddies, the total poleward heat transport contributes little to the Arctic warming. However, the total poleward moisture transport increases over most areas of the high latitudes that is dominated by the increased transport by stationary waves, which provides a significant net positive feedback onto the Arctic warming and moistening. Atmospheric transient eddy dynamical forcing (TEDF)-driven midlatitude unstable air–sea interaction has recently been recognized as a crucial positive feedback for the maintenance of the extratropical decadal variabilities. Our recent theoretical work (Chen et al., Clim Dyn https://doi.org/10.1007/s00382-020-05405-0, 2020) has characterized such an interaction through building an analytical midlatitude barotropic atmospheric model coupled to a simplified upper oceanic model. This study extends the analytical model to including a two-layer quasi-geostrophic baroclinic atmospheric model and then identifies the roles of vertical distributions of atmospheric TEDF and diabatic heating in midlatitude unstable air–sea interaction. It is found that midlatitude air–sea coupling with more realistic vertical profiles of atmospheric TEDF and diabatic heating destabilizes oceanic Rossby wave modes over the entire range of zonal wavelengths, in which the most unstable coupled mode features an equivalent barotropic atmospheric low (high) pressure over a cold (warm) oceanic surface. Spatial structure and period of the most unstable mode are more consistent with the observation than those from in previous model. Although either TEDF or diabatic heating alone can lead to a destabilized coupled mode, the former makes a dominant contribution to the instability. The increase of low-layer TEDF stimulates the instability more effectively if the TEDF in upper layer is larger than in lower layer, while the TEDF in either high or low layers can individually cause the instability. The surface heating always destabilizes the air–sea interaction, while the mid-level heating always decays the coupled mode. The results of this study further confirm the TEDF-driven positive feedback mechanism in midlatitude air–sea interaction proposed by recent observational and numerical experiment studies. The South Asian circulation and precipitation in spring shows a clear seasonal transition and interannual variation. We investigate how the North Atlantic sea surface temperature (SST) and Tibetan Plateau (TP) forcing affect this seasonal transition over South Asia on interannual timescale. Our results suggest that North Atlantic SST can affect the seasonal transition of South Asian monsoon via TP forcing in spring. The positive tripole pattern of North Atlantic SST anomaly during winter–spring can trigger a steady downstream Rossby wave train with cyclonic circulation over the southwestern TP. This forms a spring dipole mode of surface sensible heating and 10 m winds over the plateau, with a westerly (easterly) flow and positive (negative) surface sensible heating over its southern (northern) regions. A distinct land–air coupling configuration in May is then generated on the southwestern TP via such a positive TP dipole mode, which consists of anomalous positive precipitation, negative surface sensible heating and a baroclinic circulation structure with cyclonic circulation in the mid- to upper troposphere and a shallow anticyclonic circulation in the lower layer. The anticyclonic circulation is opposite to the summertime monsoon circulation. It weakens the cross-equatorial flow and water vapor transport to the South Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, resulting in in-situ precipitation reduction. While recent observational studies have shown the critical role of atmospheric transient eddy (TE) activities in midlatitude unstable air-sea interaction, there is still a lack of a theoretical framework characterizing such an interaction. In this study, an analytical coupled air-sea model with inclusion of the TE dynamical forcing is developed to investigate the role of such a forcing in midlatitude unstable air-sea interaction. In this model, the atmosphere is governed by a barotropic quasi-geostrophic potential vorticity equation forced by surface diabatic heating and TE vorticity forcing. The ocean is governed by a baroclinic Rossby wave equation driven by wind stress. Sea surface temperature (SST) is determined by mixing layer physics. Based on detailed observational analyses, a parameterized linear relationship between TE vorticity forcing and meridional second-order derivative of SST is proposed to close the equations. Analytical solutions of the coupled model show that the midlatitude air-sea interaction with atmospheric TE dynamical forcing can destabilize the oceanic Rossby wave within a wide range of wavelengths. For the most unstable growing mode, characteristic atmospheric streamfunction anomalies are nearly in phase with their oceanic counterparts and both have a northeastward phase shift relative to SST anomalies, as the observed. Although both surface diabatic heating and TE vorticity forcing can lead to unstable air-sea interaction, the latter has a dominant contribution to the unstable growth. Sensitivity analyses further show that the growth rate of the unstable coupled mode is also influenced by the background zonal wind and the air–sea coupling strength. This study investigates the subseasonal intensity variation of South Asian high (SAH) and the dynamic linkage with precipitation induced diabatic heating during the summer of 1979-2005, based on the observation and 18 models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5). The SAH's intensity variation with a period of approximately 10-36 days is identified both in the observation and 18 models, by performing an empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis on the standardized subseasonal anomalies in geopotential height at 100 hPa over the SAH's main body region. With the observed strengthening of the SAH, an enhanced rainfall belt between 70°-120°E migrates northward from the equatorial region. The northward propagating rainfall belt occupies almost the whole Indian subcontinent, Indochina Peninsula and subtropical east Asian regions between 20°-40°N when the SAH reaches the strongest. The relative vorticity diagnosis reveals the dynamical linkage between the subseasonal SAH's intensity variation and the precipitation anomalies over the Asian monsoon region: (1) The observed northward propagating rainfall band forms a horizontal gradient of diabatic heating, favoring an enhancement of the SAH over its southern part; (2) When the rainfall band approaches the regions of South and East Asia between 20°-40°N, the increased vertical gradient of diabatic heating in the upper level contributes significantly to the intensification of the SAH; (3) The horizontal advection process favors the westward expansion of the SAH. The observation-to-model comparisons indicate that the model's capacity to reproduce the SAH's intensity variation is highly associated with simulations of the anomalous rainfall band and its northward propagation. A realistic reproduction of precipitation anomalies is fundamental to simulating the dynamical processes related to diabatic heating, and thus the simulation of the SAH's subseasonal intensity variation. Observational evidence showed that the leading mode of precipitation variability over the tropical Pacific during boreal spring experienced a pronounced interdecadal change around the late 1990s, characterized by a precipitation pattern shift from an eastern Pacific (EP) type to a central Pacific (CP) type. The distinct impacts of such a precipitation pattern shift on the extratropical atmospheric teleconnection were examined. An apparent poleward teleconnection extending from the tropics to the North Atlantic region was observed after 1998, while, there was no significant teleconnection before 1998. To understand why only the CP-type precipitation mode is associated with a striking atmospheric teleconnection after 1998, diagnostic analyses with the Eliassen-Palm flux and Rossby wave source (RWS) based on the barotropic vorticity equation were performed. The results show that for the EP-type precipitation mode, no significant RWS anomalies appeared over the subtropical Pacific due to the opposite effect of the vortex stretching and absolute vorticity advection processes. For the CP-type precipitation mode, however, there are both significant vorticity forcing source over the subtropical CP and clear poleward-propagation of Rossby wave. The spatial distribution of the CP-type precipitation pattern tends to excite a conspicuous anomalous southerly and a well-organized negative vorticity center over the subtropical CP where both the mean absolute vorticity gradient and mean divergence flow are large, hence, the interaction between the heating-induced anomalous circulation and the basic state made the generation of Rossby waves conceivable and effective. Such corresponding teleconnection responses to the prescribed heating were also examined by using a Linear Baroclinic Model (LBM). It turned out that significant poleward teleconnection pattern is only caused by the CP-type precipitation mode, rather than by the EP-type precipitation mode. Further sensitive experiments demonstrated that the change in spring basic state before and after 1998 played a relatively minor role in exciting such a teleconnection pattern, when compared with the tropical precipitation anomaly pattern change. Observation reveals that the tropical Pacific-Indian Ocean (TPIO) has experienced a pronounced interdecadal warming since the end of the 1970s. Meanwhile, the wintertime midlatitude Northern Hemispheric atmospheric circulation and East Asian climate have also undergone substantial interdecadal changes. The effect of the TPIO warming on these interdecadal changes are identified by a suite of AMIP-type atmospheric general circulation model experiments in which the model is integrated from September 1948 to December 1999 with prescribed historical, observed realistic sea surface temperature (SST) in a specific region and climatological SST elsewhere. Results show that the TPIO warming reproduces quite well the observed Northern Hemispheric wintertime interdecadal changes, suggesting that these interdecadal changes primarily originate from the TPIO warming. However, each sub-region of TPIO has its own distinct contribution. Comparatively, the tropical central-eastern Pacific (TCEP) and tropical western Pacific (TWP) warming makes dominant contributions to the observed positive-phase PNA-like interdecadal anomaly over the North Pacific sector, while the tropical Indian Ocean (TIO) warming tends to cancel these contributions. Meanwhile, the TIO and TWP warming makes dominant contributions to the observed positive NAO-like interdecadal anomaly over the North Atlantic sector as well as the interdecadal anomalies over the Eurasian sector, although the TWP warming’s contribution is relatively small. These remote responses are directly attributed to the TPIO warming-induced tropical convection, rainfall and diabatic heating increases, in which the TIO warming has the most significant effect. Moreover, the TPIO warming excites a Gill-type pattern anomaly over the tropical western Pacific, with a low-level anticyclonic circulation anomaly over the Philippine Sea. Of three sub-regions, the TIO warming dominates such a pattern, although the TWP warming tends to cancel this effect. The anticyclonic circulation anomaly intensifies the southwesterly flow that transfers more moisture from the Bay of Bengal to East Asia and considerably increases the winter precipitation over the southern East Asia. This is strongly supported by the observational fact that there has been a significant interdecadal increase of winter precipitation over the southern China since the end of the 1970s. The structure and dynamics of decadal anomalies in the wintertime midlatitude North Pacific ocean-atmosphere system are examined in this study, using the NCEP/NCAR atmospheric reanalysis, HadISST SST and Simple Ocean Data Assimilation data for 1960-2010. The midlatitude decadal anomalies associated with the Pacific Decadal Oscillation are identified, being characterized by an equivalent barotropic atmospheric low (high) pressure over a cold (warm) oceanic surface. Such a unique configuration of decadal anomalies can be maintained by an unstable ocean-atmosphere interaction mechanism in the midlatitudes, which is hypothesized as follows. Associated with a warm PDO phase, an initial midlatitude surface westerly anomaly accompanied with intensified Aleutian low tends to force a negative SST anomaly by increasing upward surface heat fluxes and driving southward Ekman current anomaly. The SST cooling tends to increase the meridional SST gradient, thus enhancing the subtropical oceanic front. As an adjustment of the atmospheric boundary layer to the enhanced oceanic front, the low-level atmospheric meridional temperature gradient and thus the low-level atmospheric baroclinicity tend to be strengthened, inducing more active transient eddy activities that increase transient eddy vorticity forcing. The vorticity forcing that dominates the total atmospheric forcing tends to produce an equivalent barotropic atmospheric low pressure north of the initial westerly anomaly, intensifying the initial anomalies of the midlatitude surface westerly and Aleutian low. Therefore, it is suggested that the midlatitude ocean-atmosphere interaction can provide a positive feedback mechanism for the development of initial anomaly, in which the oceanic front and the atmospheric transient eddy are the indispensable ingredients. The East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) features strong humid low-level southerly flows and abundant rainfall over the subtropical East Asia. This study identified how condensational heating generated by the EASM rainfall can affect the EASM circulation by contrasting two 10-member ensembles of atmospheric General Circulation Model experiments with Community Climate Model version 3/National Center for Atmospheric Research respectively with and without feedback of condensational heating over the East Asian domain. Major results inferred from the experiments are as follows. Condensational heating is found to absolutely dominate diabatic heating over East Asia. Exclusion of the feedback of condensational heating leads to a significant weakening of summertime tropospheric warming over land and thus a large reduction of the land-sea thermal contrast between entire Asian continent and surrounding oceans. Associated with this, the lower-level EASM flows are weakened, South Asian High at 200 hPa migrates southward with reduced intensity and breaks over East Asia with southerly flows prevailing in the upper troposphere, in contrast to northerly flows in reality. Consequently, local EASM meridional cell disappears and the baroclinic structure featured by the EASM circulation that is dynamically determined by convective condensational heating over East Asia is altered to a barotropic structure. Therefore, it is concluded that the feedback of condensational heating acts to largely enhance lower-level flows of the EASM and essentially determine its baroclinic structure and meridional cell, once the solar radiation and inhomogeneity of the Earth's surface form low-level monsoon flows in East Asia by enhancing land-sea thermal contrast. This study investigates relationship between the zonal oscillation of the western Pacific subtropical high (WPSH) and the South Asia High (SAH). As the WPSH extends westward, in upper-troposphere the SAH shows conspicuous eastward extension in 10–25-day period, while weak zonal movement in 25–50-day period. In 10–25-day period, the zonal oscillation of the SAH lags the movement of the WPSH by about one day. It is closely related with a westward moving anomalous high from the south of the Japan to the continent. Further analysis shows that the WPSH-related precipitation plays the significant role in the variation of this anomalous high. Accompanied with the westward extension of the WPSH, in lower-troposphere an anomalous anticyclonic circulation occupies the western Pacific. It enhances the moisture transportation to the east side of the SAH, causing above-normal precipitation here. With the enhancement of the precipitation, the anomalous diabatic heating induces divergence anomaly in upper-troposphere, and further stimulates anomalous high by the horizontal divergence effect, leading to the eastward extension of the SAH. In 25–50-day period, due to the weaker convective anomaly, the WPSH is unable to extend farther westward. As the result, less moisture is transported and the anomalous moisture convergence is restricted to the north of Yangtze River, and so is the precipitation. At the east side of the SAH it is dominated by the anomalous cooling, unfavorable for the stimulation of the anomalous high, and thus, the zonal oscillation of the SAH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
