type 2 monomicrobial NF, classically caused by Streptococcus pyogenes (group A β-hemolytic streptococci), with or without concomitant infection with Staphylococcus aureus; and type 3 NF, gas gangrene caused by Clostridium perfringens. Monomicrobial NF caused by Vibrio vulnificus and Aeromonas hydrophila, which often occur in patients with underlying liver disease [4, 5], and fungal NF have been added as separate entities.
