Abstract

The human kidney possesses progenitor cells in the glomerular and tubular compartments of the nephron, capable of self-renewal, proliferation and differentiation. Differentiation of crescent-forming kidney progenitor cells into podocytes attenuates severe glomerulonephritis in mice. The crescent-forming PEC subset in humans was found to be characterized by expression of CD133, a marker of renal progenitor cells, and stratifin, a cell cycle checkpoint protein involved in stem cell proliferation/differentiation.
