Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the determinants of academic law libraries’ use, collections and services among the faculty members of the University of Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Design/methodology/approach – Keeping in view the objectives of the study, a survey based on a well-structured questionnaire was designed to collect data about law libraries’ usage, collection and services from the faculty members of 19 law colleges, including Law College, University of Peshawar, and 18 affiliated law colleges situated in the different geographical location of the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Findings – Results of the study indicate that most of the faculty members use law libraries for the issue and return of books and consult textbooks for their teaching and other academic activities. The overall results show the usage, collections and services of law libraries as somehow satisfactory. Research limitations/implications – The scope of this paper covers constituent college of the University of Peshawar and its 18 affiliated law colleges (Total 19), and the geographical area is restricted to the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The scope of this paper can be extended to additional private and public sector universities in Pakistan, as well as abroad. Originality/value – There are number of studies on the usage, collections and different library services, but this study is the first of its kind in Pakistan, specifically focusing on academic law libraries at a provincial level. Purpose – The aim of this paper is to analyze Indian researchers' publications on malaria research and to serve as a guide to libraries needing to collect information on malaria. It also seeks to compare malaria affected Asian countries global rank with their publication and death rates. Design/methodology/approach – For the purpose of the study Indian researchers' publication data which were indexed in Thomson Reuters Web of Science (WoS) were used. Various statistical techniques and bibliometric measures have been employed for further analysis. Findings – The present study found out 2,020 documents with h-index of 48, published by Indian researchers which were indexed in WoS during 2003 to 2012 and the majority of them were articles (81.43 percent). Malaria Journal is the most favored research journal among the Indian research community which covers 97 papers. A.P. Dash contributed maximum number of 136 (6.74 percent) papers. Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is the largest Indian funding agency with 184 (9.11 percent) research grants. Research limitations/implications – Limitation by geographical area and time, i.e. the study only focuses the research publication of Indian researchers on malaria research during 2003 to 2012. Originality/value – This is the first attempt to apply bibliometric techniques to analyze malaria research by Indian researchers, and, more generally for a country which is very badly affected by the disease. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to determine whether collection management practices that evolved as a result of recent budgetary constraints are included in the LIS curriculum or not. Design/methodology/approach – Ten collection management trends related to budgetary constraints were identified through a review of the literature. Then, collection management educators at ALISE member institutions were identified and surveyed regarding the inclusion of the aforementioned trends in their curricula. Survey results were analyzed using descriptive statistics and content analysis. Findings – Four trends (collaborative collection development, just-in-time acquisitions, patron-driven-acquisitions, and participation in consortia) were mentioned in nearly all curricula; six others were covered with varying frequency. Professional standards are also found to include limited information on collection management. Additionally, a review of two popular collection development texts revealed that very few of the trends were covered in a budgetary context. Originality/value – This study examines collection management education in a novel way and highlights the disconnect between professional practice, professional standards, and education. Purpose – This paper aims to serve as an introduction to the scholarly study of L.M. Montgomery through a selection of annotated resources. Design/methodology/approach – Items were located using library catalogs, databases, academic reviews, bibliographies, and online searches. Items were evaluated through inspection and consulting academic reviews. Findings – The body of academic resources and scholarship on Montgomery studies continues to expand. Resources can be found in the form of print bibliographies, biographies, databases, collected essays, edited papers, monographs, periodicals, reference works, and web resources. Originality/value – While other bibliographic lists of works by or about L.M. Montgomery exist, this resource guide provides a starting point for the scholarly study of Montgomery through a selective introduction and explanation of key secondary sources. Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to examine whether library collections accurately represent the breadth of portrayals of American Indians in feature film. It also provides collection development resources for developing and strengthening feature film collections by and about American Indians. Design/methodology/approach - This study compares WorldCat holdings of a sample of theatrically released films about American Indians with independent American Indian-made films. Findings - WorldCat holdings as a whole do not represent the breadth of portrayals of American Indians in feature film. Originality/value - There are no studies that examine library holdings of feature films by and about American Indians. This paper presents an opportunity to examine our collecting habits and recommends resources for building feature film collections that better represent the manifold Native American experience. Purpose – This paper aims to argue regarding the evolution of the collection management as a gradual process where internal and external factors interact to transform the collection and its management activities. In this progress, cooperation is used as a necessary strategy for assuming its roles and to fit the new goals, mission and context of the library. Libraries are living organisms in continuous change to adapt to the context where they exist and which is the cause of their progress. It is formed by “vital elements” such as the collection – which is its basic element and the nucleus of its activity. Design/methodology/approach – This argumentative paper establishes a logical reasoning of the evolution process of the “collection management”, with the application of Kuhn’s structure of scientific revolutions. Findings – The library collection has had great changes, such as its origin, composition, ownership, volume and diversity, different life cycle from paper to digital formats and evaluation process. These changes have affected the principles and practices of collection management in three key areas: expansion and change of traditional activities in collection management; enlargement and modification of agents involved; and fundamental mission of giving access to all information resources needed by actual or potential remote users. The “cooperation” becomes an essential element and the main engine of great part of the collection management. Originality/value – In this paper, Kuhn’s structure of scientific revolutions theory is used to establish the evolution of the collection management, to become a revolution, with a new paradigm “cooperative collection management”. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide information on handling gifts-in-kind in Croatian public and academic libraries. It also recommends what should be done to improve practice with gifts for collections. Design/methodology/approach – The paper is based on the author's research conducted using an anonymous online questionnaire that was sent to Croatian public libraries (n=139) and academic libraries (n=73) in May 2011. After a two-week period, a total of 84 responses was received (40 public libraries and 44 academic libraries). In statistical analysis, some variables are tested by χ2-test to show whether differences between public and academic libraries are statistically significant. Findings – The majority of Croatian libraries do not have gift policy statements. Gifts do have a significant part in collection building, especially in Croatian academic libraries, but are not always handled in the right way (i.e. according to IFLA's guidelines). This paper shows the quantity of gifts in the libraries, librarians' reasons for not accepting some gifts, librarians' methods in dealing with gifts, and their way of communicating with donors or potential donors. Originality/value – This paper gives results of the first complete study of gift policies in Croatian public and academic libraries. Purpose – This paper seeks to provide support and direction for academic libraries collecting popular materials. Design/methodology/approach – This paper offers a case study format supplemented by statistical and descriptive analyses. Findings – The paper presents literature and case history-based information on the debate surrounding popular materials collection in academic libraries. The case study provides concrete, cost-effective steps for academic libraries to use in building popular materials collections. Practical implications – The authors make the case for support of popular materials collections through detailed evaluation of circulation records. Originality/value – This paper offers a level of statistical analysis of circulation records unique to the library literature on popular materials collection. Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to study the effects of exchange rates of foreign currencies on the material budget in the libraries in India. Design/methodology/approach - A sample of journals costing in foreign currency was selected for the purpose of study. A comparison of inflation rate pertaining to serial price is done with the general rate of inflation in India. Findings - The paper finds that exchange rates of foreign currencies have extensive impact on the acquisitions budget of the libraries in India. Practical implications - Academic institutions may protect the buying powers of the libraries while allocating funds, keeping in mind the strengthening or weakening of Indian Rupee in comparison to foreign currencies. Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to describe how the Brooklyn Campus Library of Long Island University evaluated the present budget allocation process and took corrective action regarding the distribution of the materials budget (books, CDs, DVDs, and VHS). Design/methodology/approach - A literature review is conducted to discern which (if any) budget allocation formulas would be useful in updating the budget allocation process. Findings - There is some controversy in the literature about the value of using a mathematical equation or formula to distribute the materials budget. Within the group of librarians who favor using these equations there is a debate as to which model is the most effective. Further, there is a division over the best approach to an allocation. The efficacy of allocation formulas, historical spending and circulation statistics are a few of the issues that are debated in the literature. Practical implications - This article provides useful information for acquisitions librarians in analyzing a budget line - in this case, the materials budget that in many libraries is being restricted or reduced. It serves as a reminder that processes need to be reviewed periodically as opposed to simply accepting the process because "that's the way it's always been done". Originality/value - The paper provides insight into an urban mid-sized library's acquisitions department efforts to manage more effectively the monies allocated to the department. Abstract Purpose--The paper aims to examine the change of University of Hong Kong Libraries from a mostly print collection to a mostly electronic collection. Design/methodology/approach--The paper provides a description of the University of Hong Kong Libraries collection. Findings--The paper finds that the change to a mostly electronic collection has been successful. It has brought new problems involved with keeping up with the technological issues. Both students and faculty are pleased with the new collection. Practical implications--This change can make a large number of resources available to users at a reasonable price. There are, however, new jobs to do and new skills to learn. Purpose – This paper proposes describing the collection assessment process adapted to fit the integrated government documents collection at Jacksonville State University's Houston Cole Library. Design/methodology/approach – This paper is based on the Library's experience conducting an assessment of its integrated government documents collection using an adaptation of the WLN conspectus method. Findings – The author describes the adaptations made, obstacles overcome, results of the assessment, and conclusions drawn from it. Practical implications – As a result of this assessment, procedures were established for future assessments of the collection, and the results of the assessment were used to aid in the selection process. Originality/value – This paper provides a model for conducting an assessment of an integrated government documents collection that other libraries can follow and fills a gap in the literature of government documents collection management. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present research findings from a project to identify, locate and examine the first collection of a large academic research institution. The article also examines changes in collections over time and some of the factors influencing changing collection development policies and practice. Design/methodology/approach – Methodology included historical archival research, collection discovery and item by item comparison. Findings – As electronic access, shared repositories and access to shared content reshape the collection development landscape, the emphasis is shifting toward global access and unique local content. And yet, we see that this new model is built on a solid foundation of collection development almost 150 years in the making. Originality/value – Understanding how the University Library got to where it is will help inform future decisions and directions regarding collection development, and allow others to compare our findings against their own institutional growth and forward trajectory. Purpose – This paper seeks to recommend a basic core collection of works by and about J.R.R. Tolkien for libraries by grade level. Design/methodology/approach – The author draws on her experience as a Tolkien scholar and editor of one of the major journals in the field. Findings – A basic collection should include some works beyond the well-known Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion. Practical implications – The paper provides an ideal list for the library seeking to prepare for interest generated by the new Hobbit movie currently in production. Originality/value – While there are other bibliographies on Tolkien available, particularly on fan and society web sites, this one is arranged by grade level and includes audio-visual materials and recent scholarly and reference works, and is designed for library rather than personal use. Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to describe the collaborative collection development initiative undertaken by the Indonesia Social Equity Project. Design/methodology/approach - The paper presents a brief history and descriptive analysis of an international collection development project. Findings - The paper examines practical issues that arose while building the library collection as a librarian/faculty collaboration, with the added element of having been conducted within a multicultural context. Originality/value - Similar case studies describing international collection development projects are rare in the literature. Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to describe Qatar's Education City's six university libraries, their international patrons, collections, and services. Design/methodology/approach - The paper provides analysis of the data provided by various parties related to patrons, collections and services of the six university libraries in Qatar's Education during the calendar year of 2009. Purpose -- This paper seeks to highlight the benefits of using depository exchange lists as collection development tools. Design/methodology/approach -- The authors provide a general overview of depository collection development and analyze exchange list activity the national and local level. Findings -- Although exchange lists are widely available electronically, only a small portion of depository libraries actually use them as found in th analysis of exchange list activity at the national level. Many unique and out of print documents are regularly being offered on the lists. Originality/value -- This paper provides information on an area of government documents and collection development librarianship that is not widely covered in the literature. Purpose – Electronically stored data on libraries, librarians, library users, and the information industry that supports library collections can assist librarians in projecting trends for the future directions of the profession. The purpose of this paper is to direct librarians to a selected list of providers of this data and their publications, particularly those sources that aggregate data in systematic, accessible formats. Design/methodology/approach – Web sites of the organizations that collect data on libraries were examined for data reports generated either from research projects or from periodic reports. Findings – There is a wealth of free data from ongoing research available on the web. In addition, there are proprietary data sets that librarians who need that specialized data should consider acquiring. Research limitations/implications – LIS professionals require access to current and retrospective data to shape future research and inform decision making. Purpose - This paper aims to provide an alternative method of building quality collections for Jewish Studies collection development professionals in small and medium-sized academic libraries with highly restricted budgets. Design/methodology/approach - Sources of Jewish Studies literary awards were identified and a detailed analysis of awarded books' subjects and the publishing sources was conducted. Findings - The results show that awarded books cover a vast variety of subjects of interest to Jewish Studies collections. Since many of them are also published by academic presses, the use of identified Jewish Studies book award sources should be considered by bibliographers responsible for building Jewish Studies collections in non-sectarian college libraries with very limited budgetary resources. Practical implications - The "one stop" access to all award sources and awarded books provides an easy access to otherwise dispersed information. Originality/value - The comprehensive list of awards, nominated and winning titles, as well as the subject analysis presented herein, is the first of its kind. This can be used by Jewish Studies bibliographers to build and improve their collections and can also serve as a model for building other interdisciplinary subject collections. Purpose - This research aims to examine the inclusion of biographies of presidential candidates in library collections. Design/methodology/approach - OCLC's WorldCat database was used to search for biographies of presidential candidates that were held by libraries. Only biographies from the two years preceeding and the actual year of a presidential election were included in the analyses. Findings - The results show that although candidate biographies are plentiful, most are owned by only a few libraries. Recent elections have seen the greatest number of these biographies, many of which have been produced by special interest groups. Analyses show that libraries collect these biographies without regard to party affiliation of the candidate or whether the candidate was victorious. Research limitations/implications - Only major party candidates were included in the analyses. Originality/value - Although such campaign materials may seem ephemeral, the paper shows that this material provides the raw material for future research on presidential campaigns and its associated advertising. The cultures and languages of Africa and Asia have had an immense impact on the use of English language there. Awareness of this impact led to a recognition of new, indigenized varieties known collectively as world "Englishes". They display a number of linguistic and pragmatic patterns different from native varieties, and these have been the subject of much scholarly activity over the last 30 years. This selected bibliography attempts to introduce the literature to librarians, other than English, linguistics, or education selectors. Interdisciplinary in nature, the study of world "Englishes" has implications for research in the history, culture, sociology, and politics of these regions. For libraries to provide and maintain collections that meet the needs of their diverse community groups, expertise must be developed in sourcing, evaluating, selecting, acquiring, cataloguing and processing in an ever-growing range of languages. A unique partnership in Melbourne, Australia, provides the combined expertise of a bookseller and a cataloguing agency to provide shelf-ready library materials in over 60 languages. Non-English collections can be established, developed and managed to meet the needs of both the library and the communities they serve. Expert selection and acquisition goes beyond language and relies on knowledge and understanding of the relevant social, political, religious and cultural issues. The creation of catalogue records to support the collections requires expert language, transliteration and translation skills. By combining the selection and acquisition skills with the language and cataloguing skills, libraries are now able to provide an equitable service to all client groups. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduces and analyzes basic library collection management issues regarding electronic journals, including selection, budgeting, policy making, collection evaluation, and preservation/archiving. Argues that staffing and budgeting for electronic journals can be organized on subject-based or format-based approaches, or some combination of both. Electronic journals are selected through the same three-stage process used for print journals: identification, evaluation, and selection. Most of the traditional criteria for print journals are also applicable to electronic journals, but additional criteria are superimposed on them. The cancellation and weeding of electronic journals have not been addressed by the profession, but will assume more significance in the future. The author discusses how different formats for library materials can affect library collection development. She comments that following the creation of formats such as electronic books and Blu-ray DVDs, libraries should develop guidelines to ensure collections remain relevant to community and school curricula needs. She suggests libraries may have to discontinue some formats and suggests surveys and focus groups can help measure interest in formats.
