Contact lens users very often become patients of allergic conjunctivitis, which is caused by protein and bacteria adsorption to the eye, because contact lenses easily adsorb proteins and bacteria. However, even if contact lens users develop eye diseases such as allergic conjunctivitis, most of them continue to use contact lenses to avoid interference to daily life or a decrease in their quality of life. If novel contact lenses able to prevent and additionally cure eye diseases can be manufactured, they could improve the quality of life of contact lens users worldwide. Thus, we aim to develop a novel material for contact lenses to prevent diseases by incorporating a zwitterionic polymer with the ability to suppress protein and bacteria adsorption. In addition, we also aim to effectively introduce and release a drug against allergic conjunctivitis from the contact lens material. Because the poorly water-soluble drug for allergic conjunctivitis (pranoprofen) forms a rigid crystal structure, we developed the novel "hot-melt press method" to construct a contact lens able to effectively release it. In the present study, polymer sheets containing carboxymethyl betaine (a kind of zwitterionic monomer), 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, and 1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone were prepared using three different procedures. The sheets were hydrophilic and showed a strong resistance against protein and bacteria adsorption. The sheets prepared by the hot-melt press method were transparent and seemed to have potential as a material for contact lenses. In addition, the drug introduced into the sheets during preparation was observed to release at a practically appropriate dose. A mixed self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of an initiator (3-(2-bromo-2-isobutyryloxy)propyl triethoxysilane) for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and an agent (6-(triethoxysilyl)hexyl 2-(((methylthio)carbonothioyl)thio)-2-phenylacetate) for reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization was constructed on the surface of a silicon wafer or glass plate by a silane coupling reaction. When a UV light at 254nm was irradiated at the mixed SAM through a photomask, the surface density of the bromine atom at the end of BPE in the irradiated region was drastically reduced by UV-driven scission of the BrC bond, as observed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Consequently, the surface-initiated (SI)-ATRP of 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate (EHMA) was used to easily construct the poly(EHMA) (PEHMA) brush domain. Subsequently, SI-RAFT polymerization of a zwitterionic vinyl monomer, carboxymethyl betaine (CMB), was performed. Using the sequential polymerization, the PCMB and PEHMA brush domains on the solid substrate could be very easily patterned. Patterning proteins and cells with the binary polymer brush is expected because the PCMB brush indicated strong suppression of protein adsorption and cell adhesion, and the PEHMA brush had non-polar properties. The surface of a titanium (Ti) alloy was modified with a self-assembled monolayer of poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate phosphate (Phosmer PE). A zwitterionic monomer (carboxymethyl betaine, CMB) could be copolymerized with the surface-bound Phosmer PE due to a flexible linker between the Ti alloy surface and a methacryloyl group of Phosmer PE. The poly(CMB) (PCMB)-modified Ti alloy plate exhibited strong suppression of protein adsorption and cell adhesion, and induced approximately twice the amount of calcium (Ca 2+ ) deposition as compared to the unmodified Ti alloy plate. The zwitterionic polymer-modified surfaces not only showed enhanced mineralization clusters creation and growth, but they were also highly non-responsive to biologically derived materials such as proteins and cells. Therefore, it is possible to easily form highly pure and rigid hydroxyapatite layers on Ti alloy surfaces without the incorporation of organic molecules such as proteins. A self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of a 2-bromoisobutyryl end group-carrying initiator for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was constructed on the surface of silicon wafer or glass substrates via a silane-coupling reaction. When the initiator SAM was irradiated with UV light at 254nm, the surface density of bromine atoms was reduced by the scission of CBr bonds as observed by XPS. With the surface-initiated ATRP of the zwitterionic vinyl monomer, carboxymethyl betaine (CMB), the surface density of PCMB brushes could be easily varied by changing the irradiation period of UV light prior to the polymerization. Furthermore, by using a UV-cut shutter sliding above the initiator SAM-modified substrate at a constant speed, the degree of bromine atom removal could be linearly varied along the direction of movement of the shutter. Consequently, the amount of both proteins adsorbed and cells adhered to the PCMB brush-covered substrate could easily be controlled by the gradation of the surface density of PCMB brushes, which suppressed protein adsorption and cell adhesion. A polymer film composed of a mixture of chitosan (Ch) and carboxymethyl cellulose sodium salt (CMC) nanofibers was deposited on a glass surface. The thin film of the Ch-CMC mixture obtained was stable, and fibroblast adhesion to the film was lowest when the weight ratio of Ch to CMC was 4:6. The ζ-potential and contact angle of the mixture film indicated that a polyion complex of Ch and CMC was formed. The mechanical strength of the film composed of Ch-CMC nanofiber complexes was much higher than that of the film composed of Ch-water-soluble CMC complexes (non-nanofiber), likely because the entanglement of nanofibers was enhanced by electrostatic attractions. These results indicate that the charge-neutralized nanofiber film was highly effective in suppressing cell adhesion and therefore is a promising material for biomedical applications., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier B.V. A silane coupling agent having a zwitterionic end group was covalently bound to a semi-cylindrical fused silica prism for sum-frequency generation (SFG) analyses and to a flat glass for estimating biological affinity. It was found that total intensity of the -derived from water in contact with a positively or negatively charged SAM-modified surface and a bare silica prism. These results indicated that water molecules in the vicinity of the zwitterionic SAM-modified surface are not strongly oriented in comparison with those of lopsidedly charged SAMs and bare silica. Moreover, the zwitterionic SAM surface suppressed non-specific adsorption of bovine serum albumin in contrast to the significant adsorption to lopsidedly charged SAMs and the bare cover glass. On the other hand, fibroblasts gradually adhered to the SAM surfaces and extended regardless of the electrical charge of the SAM, though the number of cells that adhered to the zwitterionic SAM was the smallest. Brushes of a polymer, namely poly(carboxymethylbetaine) (PCMB), were fabricated on silicon wafers by reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization using a surface-confined RAFT agent having an aromatic group at its bottom. The polymer brush showed effective suppression of the non-specific adsorption of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and adhesion of fibroblasts (3T3 cells). In contrast, BSA and 3T3 cells significantly adsorbed on and adhered to positively or negatively charged polymer brushes fabricated by the same procedure. Upon UV irradiation at 193 nm, the thickness of the PCMB brush with an aromatic group at its bottom decreased significantly whereas PCMB prepared using a surface-confined RAFT agent without an aromatic group needed a much higher irradiation dose to afford a comparable decrease in thickness. These results indicate a preferential cleavage of the PCMB brush due to photodecomposition of the phenyl group at the bottom. BSA and 3T3 cells non-specifically adsorbed on and adhered to the UV irradiation-induced hollow spaces, respectively. Furthermore, a designed pattern with a resolution of 5 μm was successfully made on the PCMB brush above the silicon wafer by simple UV irradiation. Surfaces of both a cover glass and the flat plane of a semi-cylindrical quartz prism were modified with a mixture of positively and negatively charged silane coupling reagents (3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and 3-(trihydroxysilyl)propylmethylphosphonate (THPMP), respectively). The glass surface modified with a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) prepared at a mixing ratio of APTES:THPMP=4:6 was electrically almost neutral and was resistant to non-specific adsorption of proteins, whereas fibroblasts gradually adhered to an amphoteric (mixed) SAM surface probably due to its stiffness, though the number of adhered cells was relatively small. Sum frequency generation (SFG) spectra indicated that total intensity of the OH stretching region (3000-3600cm(-1)) for the amphoteric SAM-modified quartz immersed in liquid water was smaller than those for the positively and negatively charged SAM-modified quartz prisms and a bare quartz prism in contact with liquid water. These results suggested that water molecules at the interface of water and an amphoteric SAM-modified quartz prism are not strongly oriented in comparison with those at the interface of a lopsidedly charged SAM-modified quartz prism and bare quartz. A copolymer film composed of zwitterionic carboxymethylbetaine (CMB) and n-butyl methacrylate (BMA), Poly(CMB-r-BMA), was cast on a flat plane of an octadecyltrichlorosilane (ODS)-modified fused quartz prism with a semi-cylindrical shape. CH stretching of the polymer film and O-H stretching of water at the surface of the film were examined using the sum frequency generation (SFG) technique. The C-H stretching band of the cast film, indicating a gauche defect of the film, was affected by the contact medium including dry nitrogen, water vapor-saturated nitrogen and liquid water. In contrast, the C-H stretching of an octadecyl group introduced onto the quartz prism for stable attachment of the cast film was not significantly changed by the contact medium. The O-H stretching band indicated that water molecules at the surface of the Poly(CMB-r-BMA) film in contact with liquid water were not greatly oriented in comparison with those at the surfaces of a bare prism, an ODS SAM-modified prism, and a prism covered with a PolyBMA film or a copolymer film of BMA and methacrylic acid or 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate. A similar small perturbation of the structure of water was previously observed in the vicinity of water-soluble zwitterionic polymers and zwitterionic copolymer films using Raman and attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopies, respectively. A zwitterionic poly(carboxymethylbetaine) (PCMB) brush was prepared on a fused quartz prism by the surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) of CMB monomer. The conformation of PCMB brush and the state of water at the surface of the brush were examined using sum frequency generation (SFG) technique. The C-H stretching band of the brush, indicating the gauche defect of the brush, was affected by the contact medium such as dry nitrogen, water vapor-saturated nitrogen and liquid water. The water molecules at the PCMB-water interfaces were not largely oriented in comparison with the interfacial water of both bare and the ATRP-initiator-modified quartz prisms. The similar tendency was previously observed for water in the vicinity of water-soluble zwitterionic polymers and polymer thin films using Raman and attenuated total reflection (ATR) infrared spectroscopies, respectively. A random copolymer of zwitterionic monomer, carboxymethylbetaine (CMB), and 3-methacryloyloxypropyl trimethoxysilane was prepared in ethanol using 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile as initiator. The incubation of ethanol solution of the copolymer with a glass plate gave a layer of the copolymer with a thickness of about 2-3 nm. The copolymer-modified glass substrate became highly hydrophilic upon immersion in water, and showed a resistance against non-specific adsorption of proteins, and the degree of resistance increased with the content of CMB residues in the copolymer and leveled off. The adhesion of various cells to the glass substrate was also strongly suppressed by the surface modification with the copolymer layer. Further introduction of PolyCMB graft chains on the surface of the layer enhanced the suppression of cell adhesion due to the steric hindrance for the cells to approach the layer. A glycopolymer obtained by living radical polymerization of glucose-carrying vinyl monomer was sulfated and accumulated as a polymer brush on a gold colloid-immobilized glass. Binding processes of various proteins to sulfated glucose residues in the brush were examined by the increase in absorbance with a help of localized surface plasmon resonance. β-Amyloid protein (Aβ) bound to the sulfated glycopolymer brush, whereas no binding to the non-sulfated one. An AFM image of Aβ aggregates on the sulfated brush was ellipsoidal, whereas no-shaped aggregation of Aβ on the poly(methacrylic acid) and poly[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] brushes. The present results indicate the importance of balance between electrostatic attraction and repulsion in the folding-aggregation phenomena of Aβ at the surface of glycopolymers., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier B.V. A polyampholyte brush was prepared on the surface of a quartz prism by surface-initiated reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer polymerization of methacrylic acid (MA) and 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) at a monomer ratio of 1:1. The sum frequency generation method indicated that water molecules at the amphoteric polymer brush-water interfaces were not greatly oriented in comparison with those at the surfaces of bare quartz prisms, and negatively charged PolyMA and positively charged PolyDMAEMA brushes. The small perturbation effect of an amphoteric polymer brush on the structure of vicinal water was in accordance with the tendency of aqueous solution and thin films of amphoteric polymers observed by using Raman and infrared spectroscopies, respectively., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier B.V. An amphoteric copolymer brush of methacrylic acid (MA) and 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) was prepared by reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization using both a free chain transfer agent (n-butylsulfanylthiocarbonylsulfanyl-2-methyl propionic acid) and a radical initiator (4,4'-azobis(4-cyanopentanoic acid)) covalently fixed to a glass substrate. An aqueous solution of the copolymer, Poly(MA-r-DMAEMA), which was simultaneously obtained in liquid phase, had a sufficiently small polydispersity in its molecular weight. The copolymer brush showed effective suppression of non-specific adsorption of bovine serum albumin and egg white lysozyme to the brush. In contrast, both negatively charged PolyMA and positively charged PolyDMAEMA brushes significantly adsorbed the proteins irrespective of their net charges. Upon ion beam irradiation, furthermore, a hollow space with a designed shape could be made on the glass substrate, and both HEK293 and HepG2 cells non-specifically adhered to the space, forming aggregates, while no adhesion to the non-treated area on the brush was observed. Silica particles (SiP) were modified with 2-bromoisobutyryl group-carrying silane coupling reagent, and a polymer brush of carboxymethylbetaine, poly[1-carboxy-N,N-dimethyl-N-(2'-methacryloyloxyethyl)methanaminium inner salt] (PolyCMB), was introduced onto surface of the particles using surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). After purification by simple ultrafiltration, the layer of the PolyCMB brush-carrying silica particle (SiP-PolyCMB) in aqueous medium showed a clear iridescence at the bottom of a quartz cell upon a slow sedimentation, indicating the formation of colloidal crystals due to both electrostatic and steric repulsion between the particles. The peak of the reflection spectra gradually shifted to a smaller wavelength region due to the formation of more densely packed ordered structure of the SiP-PolyCMB. Moreover, SiP-PolyCMBs dispersed in water showed neither salt- nor freeze-thaw cycle-induced coagulation, and were resistant against the non-specific adsorption of proteins such as bovine serum albumin and egg white lysozyme, which is in contrast with the noticeable adsorption of the proteins to the bare silica particles., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier B.V. A novel vinyl monomer, 3-dimethylamino-6-(p-methacrylamidophenylazo)phenylboronic acid (AzoPBA), which had been prepared by the coupling of p-aminophenyl methacrylamide hydrochloride with m-dimethylaminophenylboronic acid in the presence of sodium nitrite, was polymerized with 3-dimethylaminopropylacrylamide (DMAPAA). The copolymer obtained (Poly(DMAPAA/AzoPBA)) bound to sugars such as fructose and glucose in a weakly alkaline region (8 < pH), which was indicated by the absorbance change of the diphenylazo group at 557 nm. In contrast with this, a copolymer of N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAA) and the AzoPBA (Poly(DMAA/AzoPBA)) bound to sugars in a more alkaline region (9 < pH). The larger sensitivity of the former copolymer to the sugars than the latter in a weakly alkaline region is due to the supporting effect of tertiary amino group in the DMAPAA residue to the binding of sugar to the phenylboronic acid moiety. The association constant (K) of boronic acid residue in these copolymers with fructose was larger than that with glucose. These results indicated the usefulness of the DMAPAA/AzoPBA copolymer for the sensing of sugars in the weakly alkaline region near the physiological pH.

A novel disulfide, which carried a specific inhibitor for beta-secretase (KMI360) at both ends, was prepared by the coupling of 11,11'-dithiobisundecanoic acid (DTUA) with the inhibitor. The compound obtained (DTUA-KMI360) formed a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) on a gold electrode as proven by cyclic voltammetry (CV) using hydroquinone as a probe. Furthermore, DTUA-KMI360 could be accumulated as a SAM on a gold colloid deposited on a glass plate (Au colloid-glass chip) as proven by both the red-shift and the increase in absorbance of the gold colloid corresponding to localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). When the SAM-modified Au colloid-glass chip was immersed in a solution of aspartyl proteases, pepsin and beta-secretase, the absorbance of the chip at 550nm corresponding to LSPR of the gold colloid further increased and was slightly red-shifted, whereas coexistence of a free inhibitor obstructed these phenomena. Adsorption of the enzymes was promoted by the incorporation of a zwitterionic group into the SAM, while non-specific adsorption to the mixed SAM was significantly reduced. The optimal ratio of omega-zwitterionic alkanethiol, 3-[(6-mercaptohexyl)-N,N-dimethylamino]propane-1-sulfonic acid (C(6)-SPB), and DTUA-KMI360 in the SAM for the binding of enzymes was found to be DTUA-KMI360:C(6)-SPB=1:11 using polarization modulation infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (PM-IR-RAS). From increasing profiles of absorbance of the Au colloid-glass chip, the association constant (K(assoc)) for pepsin with the inhibitor on the SAM was determined, whereas that for beta-secretase could not be due to the strong binding of the enzyme to the inhibitor, resulting in the absence of the dissociation process. The results suggested that the SAM of the enzyme inhibitor can be used for both investigation of enzymes and removal of target enzymes from biological fluids., (2010 Elsevier B.V. Telechelic poly(n-butyl methacrylate)s (PBMAs) with various end groups were prepared using nonionic, anionic, cationic or zwitterionic azo-type radical initiators and cell adhesion onto the surfaces of the polymers was investigated. The tendency for cell adhesion to the polymers differed with and without pretreatment with phosphate-buffered saline (PBS, pH 7.4). The cell adhesion to polymer surfaces without pretreatment was lower than that with pretreatment. The effect of pretreatment with PBS was significant for PBMA with ionic end groups. Furthermore, cell adhesion to the surface of PBMA with zwitterionic end groups was suppressed compared with that to the surfaces of other polymers. It was presumed that positive and negative charges of zwitterionic groups in the same molecule negated each other at pH 7.4 and that the polymers with zwitterionic end groups had no effective charges. The results clearly indicated that biocompatibility of polymers can be changed by the introduction of functional groups at the ends of the polymer chains. Fabrication of functional material surfaces will be anticipated by the similar method in the future.

A disulfide-carrying polymer with many pendent mannose residues (dithiolated poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl D-mannopyranoside)) was obtained by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) method using 2-(2'-bromoisobutyroyloxy)ethyl disulfide as initiator. The obtained disulfide-carrying glycopolymer (DT-PMEMan) was accumulated as a polymer brush on a colloidal gold-immobilized glass substrate, and the binding processes of a lectin, Concanavalin A (Con A), to mannose residues in the polymer brush were examined using a UV-vis spectrophotometer with the help of a localized surface plasmon resonance. Con A showed a concentration-dependent specific binding to the glycopolymer brush, and the apparent association constant of Con A with mannose residues in the brush was much larger than the association constant for small sugars due to the so-called cluster effect. Furthermore, the glycopolymer brush-coated device had a detection limit lower than 5 nM. The glycopolymer-carrying device examined here is expected to expand our knowledge of recognition phenomena at the surface of polymer brushes.

A polymer with many pendent galactose residues was prepared by atom-transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of galactose-carrying vinyl monomer, 2-lactobionamidoethyl methacrylate (LAMA), with a disulfide-carrying ATRP initiator, 2-(2'-bromoisobutyroyl)ethyl disulfide (DT-Br). The galactose-carrying polymer obtained (DT-PLAMA) was accumulated as a polymer brush via Au-S bond on a colloidal gold monolayer deposited on a cover glass. For comparison, a disulfide which carried one galactose residue at both ends (2-lactobionamidoethyl disulfide, Cys-Lac) was accumulated as a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) on the colloidal gold monolayer, too. The association and dissociation processes of galactose residues on the colloidal gold with a lectin, Ricinus communis agglutinin (RCA(120)), were observed by the increase and decrease in absorbance at 550nm corresponding to localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) phenomena. The Cys-Lac SAM-carrying glass chip showed a strong non-specific adsorption of the lectin, whereas the DT-PLAMA brush-carrying one reversibly associated with the lectin, indicating reusability of the latter device. The apparent association constant of the lectin with the galactose residues in the DT-PLAMA brush was much larger than the association constant for free galactose, and the detection limit of RCA(120) by the glycopolymer brush-modified device was satisfactorily low. Furthermore, a microscopic observation clearly indicated that the DT-PLAMA brush could reversibly associate with a HepG2 cell having galactose receptors, though these processes could not be observed spectrophotometrically due to a gigantic size of the cell.

A disulfide-carrying telomer with many pendent N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) residues (Cys-PMHGlcNAc) was obtained by photo-polymerization of 1-(6'-methacryloylaminohexyl)-2-N-acetoamido-2-deoxy d-glucopyranoside) (MHGlcNAc) using a benzyl N,N-diethyldithiocarbamoyl (BDC) derivative that shows abilities of initiation, transfer, and termination (iniferter). The disulfide-carrying telomer was accumulated on a monolayer of colloidal Au on a glass substrate, and the interaction of wheat germ agglutinin (WGA) with GlcNAc residue at the polymer brush-solution interface was examined by using the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) technique. For comparison, an amphiphile carrying many pendent GlcNAc residues was also prepared with MHGlcNAc and a lipophilic radical initiator and was incorporated in a phospholipid liposome to examine interaction of the GlcNAc residue with WGA on the liposome surface using turbidity measurements. Both the colloidal gold optical device and the liposome showed a concentration-dependent specific binding of WGA, and the GlcNAc-carrying liposome had a detection limit of 100 nM for WGA, whereas that of the colloidal gold device was 10nM. The sugar-carrying telomer-coated device examined here is not only useful as a simple biosensor chip but is also expected to expand our knowledge of bio-related phenomena at the liquid-telomer brush interfaces on a colloidal Au.

A dithiolated random copolymer with pendent phenylboronic acid residues (Cys-Poly(3-acrylamidophenylboronic acid-co-2-dimethylaminopropyl methacrylamide), Cys-Poly(APBA-co-DMAPMA)) obtained by photo-iniferter method was accumulated as a polymer brush on a cap-shaped gold particles deposited on a vacuum-evaporated gold film, and the usefulness of the polymer brush as a sensing element for glycoprotein, ovalbumin (OVA), was examined by using UV-vis spectroscopy with a help of surface plasmon resonance. A similar system was constructed with a dithiolated mannose-carrying polymer, dithiolated-poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl-D-mannopyranoside) (DT-PMEMan), prepared by the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The brush composed of this polymer was examined as a sensing element for lectin, concanavalin A (Con A). The sensor cells modified with Cys-Poly(APBA-co-DMAPMA) and DT-PMEMan showed a concentration-dependent binding of OVA and Con A, respectively, with a comparable detection limit to those with a monolayer of polymer brush-coated gold particle deposited on a glass substrate. Using this system, it can be expected to open a new perspective to various functional polymer brushes fixed to the cap-shaped gold particle on a solid substrate.

A disulfide-carrying random telomer with pendent D-glucosylurea groups (Cys-poly(glucosylureaethyl methacrylate-r-ureaethyl methacrylate), Cys-Poly(GUMA-r-UMA)) was obtained by UV-irradiation of GUMA and UMA in the presence of benzyl N,N-diethyldithiocarbamoyl (BDC) derivative which shows the abilities of initiation, transfer, and termination (iniferter). The disulfide-carrying telomer was accumulated on a gold electrode and colloidal gold-immobilized glass substrate, and the binding of various proteins to the surface of the polymer brush was examined by both cyclic voltammetry (CV) with hydroquinone as a probe, and localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) absorption method. The Cys-Poly(GUMA-r-UMA) brush did not show a significant non-specific adsorption of proteins such as bovine serum albumin and egg white lysozyme. Furthermore, sugar binding proteins, concanavalin A (with an affinity for mannose and glucose) and wheat germ agglutinin (with an affinity for N-acetylglucosamine), were only slightly adsorbed to the GUMA-carrying brush, which is in contrast with the prompt and distinct binding of these proteins to the brushes composed of 2-methacryloyloxyethyl D-glucopyranoside and 1-(6'-methacrylamido)hexyl-2-N-acetoamido-2-deoxy-D-glucopyranoside, respectively. The glucosylurea group-carrying telomer brush prepared here might be useful to provide a "bio-inert" surface in bio-medical fields.
