A new fax compression technique that can squeeze 200 pages of text or software code onto a single piece of paper has been developed by Palo Alto, California-based InfoImaging Technologies Inc. 3D Fax compresses pages to be faxed into a single indecipherable image that can be sent via fax machine or computer to its destination, where it can then be scanned, allowing 3D fax software to separate out the various pages of text or code. Limited capability versions of the software can be found at the company's Web site.

REVERSE engineering ,TRADE secret laws ,BUSINESS intelligence ,UNFAIR competition ,INTELLECTUAL property ,FREE trade - Abstract
This article presents a discussion on whether reverse engineering is a lawful way to acquire trade secrets embodied in mass-marketed products, in light of a case pending with California Supreme Court. The precedent set in this case could, in turn, influence courts in other jurisdictions. A key issue in the case, one that legal scholars and intellectual property lawyers have debated for many years--is whether an anti-reverse-engineering clause in a mass-market license should be enforceable. California trade-secrecy law explicitly provides that reverse engineering is a lawful way to acquire a trade secret, as do the laws of other jurisdictions. Several reasons support reverse engineering as a sound principle of trade-secret law. Purchase of a product in the open market generally confers personal property rights in the product, including the right to take the product apart, measure it, subject it to testing, and the like. The law also regards the sale of a product in the open market as a kind of publication of innovations it embodies and a dedication of them to the public domain unless the creator has obtained patent protection for them.

An academic program at Harvey Mudd College, called the Clinic program, brings projects from industry on campus to be studied and solved by student teams. The objective of the Clinic is to provide students, working as small teams under careful faculty supervision, an opportunity to work on real world problems of sufficient magnitude and complexity. Under this program, students can acquire essential skills of software engineering, such as team work, software project management, software design methodology, and communication skills, in a realistic environment. Sample software projects undertaken by the Clinic are described. Experience so far has shown that the program is a viable transition from an academic to industrial world. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article reports that the largest exhibit of computer hardware, software, systems, and services ever held will be at the 1978 National Computer Conference (NCC) in Anaheim, California during June 5-8, 1978. The demand for booth space has been so great that a West Hall has been built at the Anaheim Convention Center to accommodate exhibitor overflow. Conference chairman Stephen W. Miller views NCC 78 as a picture of unparalleled breadth and diversity, encompassing the complete spectrum of information technology and applications. A major theme of the conference is the role of computers in alleviating the national energy problem. A special symposium will focus on the ability of current computer technology to cope with the U.S. energy problem and to help forge a national energy policy and program serving the public interest. This year emphasis will be on practical applications rather than theoretical concepts, according to program co-chairman Leonard Y. Liu and Sakti P. Ghosh. The Professional Development Series organized under the direction of Gopal Kapur, will consist of 15 tutorial seminars.

COMPUTERS ,INDUSTRIALIZATION ,TRADE associations - Abstract
An Industrial Advisory Group met in June 1996 in Silicon Valley, California to investigate how Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) might better serve the concerns of the computing industrial development community. The Industrial Advisory Group is one of three recent efforts to gather information about how ACM could better serve the industrial constituency. One important contribution that ACM could make would be to facilitate and influence the redirection of academic curricula to include more applications. ACM could provide a tremendous service to the industrial community if it could provide a common ground for the exchange of ideas in a neutral, objective context. ACM's successful model might be amplified to include new focal areas that are more industry centered. The observations and recommendations of the Industrial Advisory Group were reported in ACM's Council in July. They will be integrated with those of the member focus group and Vigon-Ellis Report to create a plan of initiatives to better serve the development community.

CREDIT cards ,PROTOTYPES ,AUTOMATIC speech recognition - Abstract
A credit card that works only when it hears its owner's voice may become the new weapon against online fraud. A prototype built by engineers at Santa Monica, California-based Beepcard represents the company's latest effort to create a voice-recognition card of diminutive dimensions. The new version incorporates a microphone, a loudspeaker, a voice-recognition chip, and a battery. The owner pushes a button on the card that prompts it to ask for a password; once the password is confirmed the device uses its ID squawk to identify itself and an online server confirms it to permit a transaction. The only way thieves could possibly use the card is if they could copy the owner's voice with an extremely high degree of accuracy. Beepcard intends to use smaller chips to thin it down, as well as include a nonreplaceable battery to allow 10 transactions per day for two years.

This article reports on the development of a robotic insect at AeroVironment, a California-based company that specializes in micro-spy planes, in 2001. The Black Widow, a pocket plane just six inches in diameter, is already being used by the U.S. military for outside surveillance behind enemy lines. But it flies too fast to navigate inside a room. The Microbat, an eight-inch-long robot that flaps its wings more like a bat than an insect, allows for excellent mid-air maneuverability and the ability to carry an electric motor and battery into the air. AeroVironment designers admit, however, that when it comes to micro-flapping flight, they are about the same stage as Orville and Wilbur Wright, pioneers in aviation, in 1903.

The ACM Fellows Program was established by the ACM Council in 1993 to recognize and honor outstanding ACM members for their achievements in computer science and information technology and for their significant contributions to the mission of ACM. The ACM Fellows served as distinguished colleagues to whom the ACM and its members look for guidance and leadership as the world of information technology evolves. The ACM Council endorsed the establishment of a Fellows Program and provided guidance to the ACM Fellows Committee, taking the view that the program represents a concrete benefit to which any ACM member might aspire, and provides an important source of role models for existing and prospective ACM Members. The program is managed by an ACM Fellows Committee as part of the general ACM Awards program administered by Gwen Bell. The 41 men and women honored as ACM Fellows have made critical contributions towards and continue to exhibit extraordinary leadership in the development of the information age and will be inducted at the ACM Awards Banquet on March 2, 1997, during ACM97 in San Jose.
