The article presents information on the first symposium on Small Systems organized by the Association for Computing Machinery that was held on August 2-3, 1978 in New York City under the sponsorship of Small Computing Systems and Applications. The keynote speaker was Maurice V. Wilkes of the University of Cambridge. Following the keynote address, a distinguished panel session was presented. A Best Paper Award based upon the quality of the written material and oral presentation was given to Jacob Slonim, Michael Farrell, and Paul Fisher of Kansas State University for the paper "A Survey of Mini-Database Management Systems in 1977."
