The article focuses on a study which de-identified and released a dataset from 16 massive open online courses (MOOC) from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University on the edX platform. Topics discussed include the goals for the data release, which were to allow other researchers to replicate the results of the analysis and to allow researchers to conduct novel analyses beyond the original work. Also mentioned is the importance of having trust in researchers in order to achieve balance between high-quality social science research and the privacy of human subjects.
