Leaflet damage has been documented to occur while deploying a transcatheter aortic valve (TAV) due to mechanical loads during the crimping procedures. In this study, the impact of compressive stress on folded leaflets was measured to investigate the mechanism of traumatic leaflet tissue damage. Numerical simulation of TAV crimping procedure was adapted to calculate stress magnitude and distribution of leaflets. A 20 mm balloon expanding short stent TAV with 0.25 mm thickness leaflets was used in the simulation. Then the calculated stresses were applied on leaflet material (bovine pericardium) samples by loading experiments. Mechanical properties evaluation combined with histological and microscopy observation were used to investigate the tissue damage. The elastic modulus and the tensile strength of the tissue began to decrease significantly at 2 MPa stress and 2.5 MPa stress, respectively. No significant differences were observed at 0–1.5 MPa stress. When the TAV was crimped to 14 Fr and 12 Fr, the 2 MPa greater areas on leaflets increased from 18.17% to 76.96%. 2 MPa compressive stress might be the threshold value for leaflet damage. Stent retriever thrombectomy has become an effective method for treating acute ischemic stroke. Successful recanalization cannot be achieved for all patients. The outcome of mechanical thrombectomy may be associated with some mechanical factors, requiring efficient tools that are able to assess the interaction between stent retrievers and clots. In this study, a simulation by finite element analysis was developed to evaluate the outcome of stent retriever thrombectomy for clots of different sizes and frictional properties. The deployment and retrieval of the stent retriever were conducted in a middle cerebral artery model. The recanalization, deformation of the clot and stent retriever and the stress induced in the clot were assessed. The results showed that higher friction could lead to failed recanalization and increased stress in the clot. The simulation method can be used to characterize the mechanical behaviour of stent retrievers and clots, offering a potential tool for the optimization of device design and the selection of surgical strategies. Pulsatile tinnitus (PT) is a common symptom in otology. In some cases, the venous flow in the sigmoid sinus (SS) is the source of PT. It is suggested that the venous sound is propagated into the tympanic cavity through the air pathway of temporal bone air cells (TBAC). The hyperpneumatization of TBAC was hypothesized as a direct pathology of PT through amplifying the venous sound, but there is no quantitative analysis. This study aims to quantify the relationship between the venous sound amplification and the pneumatization grade of TBAC. The acoustic numerical simulation and statistical analysis were performed based on the radiology data of 21 pulsatile tinnitus patients. The TBAC of these patients were classified into hypopneumatization, normal pneumatization and hyperpneumatization grades according to three standards. The in vitro acoustic experiment was done as the validation of simulation. It is indicated that the SS standard is effective for the clinical evaluation of venous sound amplification. The TBAC amplifies the venous sound due to the acoustic resonance at the first mode frequency, regardless of the pneumatization grades. The normal pneumatic TBAC exhibits the highest sound amplification effect on the venous sound amongst the three grades, contributing mostly to PT, but would not induce PT without any other causes. The uneven distributed microstructure featured with plate-like spongy bone in woodpecker’s skull has been found to further help reduce the impact during woodpecker’s pecking behavior. Therefore, this work was to investigate the micro-mechanical properties and composition on different sites of Great Spotted woodpecker’s (GSW) skull. Different sites were selected on forehead, tempus and occiput, which were also compared with those of Eurasian Hoopoe (EH) and Lark birds (LB). Micro structural parameters assessed from micro computed tomography (μCT) occurred significantly difference between GSW, EH and LB. The micro finite element (micro-FE) models were developed and the simulation was performed as a compression process. The maximal stresses of GSW’s micro-FE models were all lower than those of EH and LB respectively and few concentrated stresses were noticed on GSW’s trabecular bone. Fourier transform infrared mapping suggesting a greater organic content in the occiput of GSW’s cranial bone compared with others. The nano-hardness of the GSW’s occiput was decreasing from forehead to occiput. The mechanical properties, site-dependent hardness distribution and special material composition of GSW’s skull bone are newly found in this study. Although a human eye comprises less than 0.1% of the frontal body surface area, injuries to the eye are found to be disproportionally common in survivors of explosions. This study aimed to introduce a Lagrangian–Eulerian coupling model to predict globe rupture resulting from primary blast effect. A finite element model of a human eye was created using Lagrangian mesh. An explosive and its surrounding air domain were modelled using Eulerian mesh. Coupling the two models allowed simulating the blast wave generation, propagation and interaction with the eye. The results showed that the peak overpressures caused by blast wave on the corneal apex are 2080, 932.1 and 487.3 kPa for the victim distances of 0.75, 1.0 and 1.25 m, respectively. Higher stress occurred at the limbus, where the peaks for the three victim distances are 25.5, 14.1 and 6.4 MPa. The overpressure threshold of globe rupture was determined as 2000 kPa in a small-scale explosion. The findings would provide insights into the mechanism of primary blast-induced ocular injuries. Orthodontic treatments not only displace irregular teeth but also induce responses in surrounding bone tissues. Bone remodelling is regarded as the regulatory mechanism triggered by mechanical loading. This study was aimed at investigating the effect of orthodontic loading on both tooth movement and neighbouring bone density distribution. A set of computational algorithms incorporating both external and internal remodelling mechanisms was implemented into a patient-specific 3D finite element (FE) model to investigate and analyse orthodontic treatment under four typical modes of orthodontic loading. The consequence of orthodontic treatment was reproduced numerically by using this FE-based technique. The results indicated that the diverse modes of orthodontic loading would result in different magnitudes of tooth movement and particular morphology of bone density distribution. Dental implants may alter the mechanical environment in the jawbone, thereby causing remodelling and adaptation of the surrounding trabecular bone tissues. To improve the efficacy of dental implant systems, it is necessary to consider the effect of bone remodelling on the performance of the prosthetic systems. In this study, finite element simulations were implemented to predict the evolution of microarchitecture around four implant systems using a previously developed model that combines both adaptive and microdamage-based mechano-sensory mechanisms in bone remodelling process. Changes in the trabecular architecture around dental implants were mainly focused. The simulation results indicate that the orientational and ladder-like architecture around the implants predicted herein is in good agreement with those observed in animal experiments and clinical observations. The proposed algorithms were shown to be effective in simulating the remodelling process of trabecular architecture around dental implant systems. AbstractThe clinical performance of biodegradable polymer stents implanted in blood vessels is affected by uneven degradation. Stress distribution plays an important role in polymer degradation, and local stress concentration leads to the premature fracture of stents. Numerical simulations combined with in vitro experimental validation can accurately describe the degradation process and perform structural optimization. Compared with traditional design techniques, optimization based on surrogate models is more scientifically effective. Three stent structures were designed and optimized, with the effective working time during degradation as the optimization goal. The finite element method was employed to simulate the degradation process of the stent. Surrogate models were employed to establish the functional relationship between the design parameters and the degradation performance. The proposed function models accurately predicted the degradation performance of various stents. The optimized stent structures demonstrated improved degradation performance, with the kriging model showing a better optimization effect. AbstractNon-physiological blood flow conditions in axial blood pumps lead to some complications, including hemolysis, platelet activation, thrombosis, and embolism. The high speed of the axial blood pump destroys large amounts of erythrocytes, thereby causing hemolysis and thrombosis. Thus, this study aims to reduce the vortices and reflux in the flow field by optimizing the axial blood pump. The axial blood pump and arterial flow field were modeled by the finite element method. The blood was assumed to be incompressible, turbulent, and Newtonian. The SST k–ω turbulence model was used. The frozen rotor method was also used to calculate the snapshot of motion. Many vortices and reflux exist in the flow field of the blood pump without optimization. The improved flow field had almost no vortex and reflux, thereby reducing the exposure time of blood. The optimized blood pump had little influence on the pressure field and shear stress field. The optimized blood pump mainly reduced the vortex, reflux, and the risk of thrombosis in the flow field. The flow field characteristics of an axial blood pump were studied, and the results showed the risk of thrombosis and hemolysis in the blood pump. In accordance with the relationship between the blade shape and the flow field, the blade of the blood pump was optimized, reducing the vortex and reflux of the flow field, as well as the risk of thrombosis.
