4. Multiscale simulation of ink seepage into paper: A mesoscopic variational model

Abstract

This work focuses on the study of ink seepage and spreading into paper to ease the deciphering of digitized ancient documents and therefore make them legible and researchable. A three-dimensional model is proposed for the simulation of ink seepage into paper at the fiber level. The model takes into account a finite volume of ink and describes the system state through gravity, cohesion and adhesion force interactions. At the mesoscopic scale, the writing paper is modeled using a discretized fiber structure generated using a numerical deposition procedure. A modified Monte Carlo method is introduced for the simulation of the ink dynamics. Finally a multiphase lattice Boltzmann method is suggested to fine-tune the mesoscopic variational model parameters and it is shown that the ink seepage behaviors predicted by the proposed model can resemble those predicted by a method relying on first principles .

Abstract

The combination of IDO (Interpolated Differential Operator) scheme, Cut Cell technique, and overlapping grid method make it possible to simulate the falling process of papers. We have the result of the falling with fluttering trajectory for a certain initial angle of the paper, and the fluttering mechanism becomes clear. It is shown that the simulation is applicable to the phenomena of falling leaves with complex shape.

Abstract

In this paper we describe a practical implementation of parallel computation for the molecular dynamics (MD) simulation of an alkane/aluminum oxide interface. A serial MD program was converted into a parallel code utilizing the message passing interface (MPI). This code was evaluated on a twelve processor symmetrical multiprocessor as well as on a cluster of four processor SMPs. A maximum speedup of 5.25 was achieved with twelve processors on the large shared memory machine. The cluster performance saturated at a speedup of 4.5 with two nodes. High communication costs and considerable load imbalance in the system were identified as areas that need further investigation for obtaining better performance.

Gaemer's technique for recovering a function ⨍(x) from its power moments μ n = ∝ 1 0 ⨍(x)x n dx specified at n = 0, 1, 2,…N, is rederived using an expansion in Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind. Advantages of the present derivation over the original one are pointed out.

Abstract

Abstract: In this paper we present a new effective algorithm for the Schrödinger equation. This new method differs from the original Numerov method only in one simple coefficient, by which we can extend the interval of periodicity from 6 to infinity and obtain an embedded correct factor to improve the accuracy. We compare the new method with the original Numerov method by the well-known problem of Woods–Saxon potential. The numerical results show that the new method has great advantage in accuracy over the original. Particularly for the resonant state, the accuracy is improved with four orders overall, and even six to seven orders for the highest oscillatory solution. Surely, this method will replace the original Numerov method and be widely used in various area. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
