In recent years, Sine Cosine Algorithm (SCA) is a kind of meta-heuristic optimization algorithm with simple structure, simple parameters and trigonometric function principle. It has been proved that it has good competitiveness among the existing optimization algorithms. However, the single mechanism of SCA leads to its insufficient utilization of the information of the whole population, insufficient ability to jump out of local optima and poor performance at solving complex objective function. Therefore, this paper introduces social learning strategy (SL) and elite opposition-based learning (EOBL) strategy to improve SCA, and proposes novel algorithm: enhancing Sine Cosine Algorithm based on elite opposition-based learning and social learning (ESLSCA). Social learning strategy takes full advantage of information from the entire population. The elite opposition-based learning strategy provides a possibility for the algorithm to jump out of local optima and increases the diversity of the population. To demonstrate the performance of ESLSCA, this paper uses 22 well-known benchmark test functions and CEC2019 test function set to evaluate ESLSCA. It is axiomatic that influence maximization is one of the major issues of the Internet today. In this paper a novel specialized metaheuristic algorithm is proposed to efficiently deal with it. The purpose of influence maximization is to select a subset of seed nodes in the network in order to influence other nodes maximally. The greedy methods present good results for influence maximization, but these algorithms involve very high computational time. Unlike greedy algorithms, meta-heuristic algorithms have acceptable efficiency. The ICO algorithm is just recently proposed as an ensign of meta-heuristic algorithms to solve continuous optimization problems in 2022. In this paper, a discrete version of ICO, called DICO, is proposed. The contribution of the proposed method is to present a new intelligent operator based on the nodes' degree and logistic mapping for initialization of solutions. In addition, novel approaches are proposed to reproduce each parent discretely. Another innovation of the proposed method is to present a new local search operator based on the network topology. In this operator, a tabu list is suggested to decrease the selection probability of nodes influenced by those nodes selected previously. The proposed method is evaluated on 6 real- world networks, and it is compared to the state-of-the-art and conventional methods. The evaluation results prove that the proposed method has the higher influence than most of other methods. The Internet of Things (IoT) is constantly evolving. The variety of IoT applications has caused new demands to emerge on users' part and competition between computing service providers. On the one hand, an IoT application may exhibit several important criteria, such as deadline and runtime simultaneously, and it is confronted with resource limitations and high energy consumption on the other hand. This has turned to adopting a computing environment and scheduling as a fundamental challenge. To resolve the issue, IoT applications are considered in this paper as a workflow composed of a series of interdependent tasks. The tasks in the same workflow (at the same level) are subject to priorities and deadlines for execution, making the problem far more complex and closer to the real world. In this paper, a hybrid Particle Swarm Optimization and Simulated Annealing algorithm (PSO–SA) is used for prioritizing tasks and improving fitness function. Our proposed method managed the task allocation and optimized energy consumption and makespan at the fog-cloud environment nodes. Swarm intelligence (SI) algorithms represent a class of Artificial Intelligence (AI) optimization metaheuristics used for solving complex optimization problems. However, a key challenge in solving complex problems is maintaining the balance between exploration and exploitation to find the optimal global solution and avoid local minima. This paper proposes an innovative Swarm Intelligence (SI) algorithm called the Four Vector Intelligent Metaheuristic (FVIM) to address the aforementioned problem. FVIM's search strategy is guided by four top-performing leaders within a swarm, ensuring a balanced exploration-exploitation trade-off in the search space, avoiding local minima, and mitigating low convergence issues. The efficacy of FVIM is evaluated through extensive experiments conducted over two datasets, incorporating both qualitative and quantitative statistical measurements. One dataset contains twenty-three well-known single-objective optimization functions, such as fixed-dimensional and multi-modal functions, while the other dataset comprises the CEC2017 functions. Additionally, the Wilcoxon test was computed to validate the result's significance. The results illustrate FVIM's effectiveness in addressing diverse optimization challenges. The optimal foraging algorithm (OFA) is a swarm-based algorithm motivated by animal behavioral ecology theory. When solving complex optimization problems characterized by multiple peaks, OFA is easy to get trapped in local minima and encounters slow convergence. Therefore, this paper presents an improved optimal foraging algorithm with social behavior based on quasi-opposition (QOS-OFA) to address these problems. First, quasi-opposition-based learning (QOBL) is introduced to improve the overall quality of the population in the initialization phase. Second, an efficient cosine-based scale factor is designed to accelerate the exploration of the search space. Third, a new search strategy with social behavior is designed to enhance local exploitation. The cosine-based scale factor is used as a regulator to achieve a balance between global exploration and local exploitation. The proposed QOS-OFA is compared with seven meta-heuristic algorithms on a CEC benchmark test suite and three real-world optimization problems. Cloud data centers face various challenges, such as high energy consumption, environmental impact, and quality of service (QoS) requirements. Dynamic virtual machine (VM) consolidation is an effective approach to address these challenges, but it is a complex optimization problem that involves trade-offs between energy efficiency and QoS satisfaction. Moreover, the workload patterns in cloud data centers are often non-stationary and unpredictable, which makes it difficult to model them. In this paper, we propose a new method for dynamic VM consolidation that optimizes both energy efficiency and QoS objectives. Our approach is based on Markov chains and the artificial feeding birds (AFB) algorithm. Markov chains are used to model the resource utilization of each individual VM and PM based on the changes that happen in workload data. AFB algorithm is a metaheuristic optimization technique that mimics the behavior of birds in nature. We modify the AFB algorithm to suit the characteristics of the VM placement problem and to provide QoS-aware and energy-efficient solutions. Our approach also employs an online step detection method to capture variations in workload patterns. Furthermore, we introduce a new policy for VM selection from overloaded hosts, which considers the abrupt changes in the utilization processes of the VMs. The proposed algorithms are evaluated extensively using the CloudSim Toolkit with real workload data. In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), balancing energy consumption is always a critical problem. Multi-hop data transmission may cause the nodes around the static sink to exhaust energy prematurely. It can be avoided by introducing the mobile sink (MS) in WSNs. The MS only needs to visit some specific nodes, such as cluster heads (CHs) in the clustering network, to collect data. In this paper, we propose an energy-adaptive clustering method based on Taguchi-based-GWO optimizer (EACM-TGWO). Different from the existing clustering protocols, we develop the optimal number of CHs according to the characteristic of energy consumption in MS-based WSNs. Afterwards, the fitness function is established by combining the residual energy and the average distance within clusters to select CHs. Meanwhile, an adaptive weight factor is introduced to dynamically tune the influence degree of the two factors on the clustering results. Furthermore, a novel meta-heuristic algorithm Taguchi-based grey wolf optimizer (TGWO) is used to search for the optimal CHs set. Compared with grey wolf optimizer (GWO) and some of its improved versions, TGWO is more excellent tested in CEC2017. We also make an elaborate comparison of EACM-TGWO with LEACH-C, EACM-GWO, MSECA, and GAOC. Grasshopper optimization algorithm (GOA) is a meta-heuristic algorithm for solving optimization problems by modeling the biological habit and social behavior of grasshopper swarms in nature. Compared with other optimization algorithms, GOA still has room to improve its performance on solving complex problems. Therefore, this paper proposes an improved grasshopper optimization algorithm (EMGOA) based on dynamic dual elite learning and sinusoidal mutation. First of all, dynamic elite learning strategy is adopted to improve the influence of elites on the update process, enabling the algorithm to have a faster convergence speed. Then, sinusoidal function is utilized to guide the mutation of the current global optimal individual during each iteration to avoid the algorithm falling into the local optimum and improve the convergence accuracy of the algorithm. In order to investigate the performance of the proposed EMGOA algorithm, experiments are conducted on 26 benchmark functions and CEC2019 in this paper. The experimental results show that the optimization performance of EMGOA is obviously better than GOA, and EMGOA is competitive with six state-of-the-art meta-heuristic optimization algorithms. Cloud computing is the sharing of remote access resources over the Internet. But with this comes an extensive risk of unauthorized access. Hence, for the security and privacy of the data, intrusion detection system (IDS) is required. IDS has to process a huge number of data with dimensions in search of intrusions. The more data it has to scan through, the more time it takes to detect an intrusion. Thus to reduce the dataset, feature selection (FS) is used where redundant data dimensions are discarded. In this paper, authors have proposed a novel Sage Grouse Mating algorithm which is to be implemented for FS in IDS. The proposed model was tested on NSL-KDD and Kyoto2006+ datasets. The proposed model increases the average accuracy of IDS up to 81.729% and reduces the number of features from 41 to 14 on NSL-KDD dataset. So, the experimental outcomes show that the proposed model enhanced the performance of IDS and outperforms all other metaheuristic algorithms compared in this paper. Smart objects in the Internet of Things (IoT) communicate with one another, gather information, and respond to users requests. In these systems, wireless sensors are used to collect data and monitor the environment at the lowest level. In IoT applications, wireless sensor networks play a pivotal role. Since IoT devices often use batteries, efficiency is important to them such that IoT-related standards and research efforts focus more on energy saving or conservation. In this paper, we have used two meta-heuristics algorithm for clustering and routing in IoT. We cluster the network using a clustering method called WOA-clustering based on the meta-heuristic Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) and select the optimal cluster heads. We then use a routing method called HHO-Routing based on the Harris Hawks Optimization (HHO) algorithm, a novel meta-heuristic algorithm, to route the cluster heads to BS. The use of the above methods results in reduced power consumption for reaching the base station (BS). Also, to prove the optimal performance of the proposed methods, these methods were simulated and compared with five different methods in a similar context. It was observed that the consumed energy, the number of survival cycles for the death of the first node, and the data transmission rate were improved. The proposed method is simulated in cooja simulator, and for a more accurate evaluation, we compare it with UCCGRA, PSO-SD, PUDCRP, EECRA, EEMRP algorithms. Solving Integer Linear Programming (ILP) models generally lies in the category of NP-hard problems and finding the optimal answer for large models is a computational challenge. Genetic algorithms are a family of metaheuristic algorithms capable of adjusting and redesigning parameters and operations according to the characteristics of ILP models. On the other hand, still the genetic algorithm performs a lot of operations to solve large models, and parallel processing is a suitable technique to tackle this problem. This paper introduces an LP-Relaxation based parallel genetic algorithm that uses a population-based incremental learning technique to presents an expandable solver for large ILP models derived from a behavioral synthesis of digital circuits. In the proposed algorithm, each chromosome provides a state subspace of possible solutions, and each generation is produced based on a probability vector as well as elitism. Our experiments verify the efficiency of the proposed algorithm on multicore platforms, as it outperformed four previous genetic algorithms for solving mixed integer programming problems. The proposed genetic algorithm solved 20 ILP models include up to 5183 int / binary decision variables in less than 20 min using four 16-core AMD Opteron 6386 SE processors. Also, the results indicate that for models with more than 4000 variables, the speedup and the efficiency of the proposed parallel genetic algorithm on 60 CPU cores is more than 18X and 30 % , respectively. Today, cloud computing technology has attracted the attention of many researchers. According to the needs of users to quickly execute requests and provide quality services, optimal allocation of resources and timing of task execution between virtual machines in cloud computing are of great importance. One of the important challenges that cloud service providers face is the effective management of resources by physical infrastructure. Therefore, in this paper, an autonomous system based on the Clipped Double Deep Q-Learning (CDDQL) Algorithm and the meta-heuristic Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) for resource allocation is proposed in the Fog-cloud computing infrastructure. The PSO algorithm is used to prioritize the tasks and CDDQL is used as the core of the autonomous system (Auto-CDDQL) to allocate the desired VM resources to the tasks. The proposed Auto-CDDQL is implemented in the Fog and performs this process autonomously. By evaluating the results, it was observed that the amount of Make Span, response time, task completion, resource utilization, and energy consumption rate in the proposed AutoCDDQL on the c-hilo dataset, compared to the FCFS, RR, and PBTS methods, are significantly improved. The rapid growing number of web services has posed new challenges for service composition computing. How to combine services that meet the needs of users in the least amount of time from a huge number of candidate services is a hot topic of research today. As a meta-heuristic algorithm for solving optimization problems, salp swarm algorithm (SSA) has been widely applied to case scenarios in different fields due to its simple structure and high performance. However, QoS-aware service composition is a discrete problem and existing methods are not suitable for it. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an improved SSA integrating chaotic mapping method for QoS service composition selection, named CSSA. Through the randomness and ergodicity of chaos, reducing the possibility of falling into local optimum and strengthening the exploitation capability of the algorithm. In addition, a fuzzy continuous neighborhood search method is used to enhance the local search capability of the algorithm which makes the discrete space of service composition in a way similar to continuous space. Finally, two well-known datasets are used to verify the effectiveness of CSSA compared to three advanced algorithms and original SSA. Cloud computing is a technology wherein a network of remote servers is used to process large amount of data in real-time. The servers and data sources may be located in geographically distant regions. Scheduling of workflows is one of the major challenging issues in cloud computing. Workflows are used to express a wide variety of applications including scientific computing and multi-tier web applications. The Workflow scheduling problem is known to be NP-complete. No known traditional scheduling algorithm is able to provide an optimal solution in polynomial time for NP-complete problems. So, researchers rely on heuristics and meta-heuristics to achieve the most efficient solution. In this paper, a workflow scheduling algorithm is proposed to schedule large scientific workflows that are to be executed on IaaS clouds. The workflow scheduling algorithm generates a schedule with the task-to-resource mapping. The metaheuristic Catfish particle swarm optimization (C-PSO) technique is used to select the best schedule with the least makespan and execution cost. The performance of C-PSO is then compared with traditional PSO. The algorithm is simulated on the WorkFlowSim Simulator, an extension of CloudSim simulator. The solution is tested for different types of scientific workflows like Montage, Epigenome, CyberShake and Inspiral. This work proposes a FPGA-based architecture for accelerating the Continuous GRASP (C-GRASP), a prominent metaheuristic for solving continuous optimization problems. Although FPGA implementations have been proposed for other metaheuristics, nothing has been done for C-GRASP. We conduct a comprehensive set of experiments on well-known hard test problems, and compare our FPGA architecture with C-GRASP implementations running on four other architectures: a single-core ARM Cortex A9-based, a single-core Intel i7-based, a multi-core Intel i7-based, and a GPU-based. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed architecture outperforms the others in terms of performance-to-power-efficiency. For instance, it is on average 3x faster and 15x less power consuming than the single-core Intel i7-based implementation. Moreover, we introduce a model-based method that helps designers with little experience in FPGA development to use our high-performance architecture to optimize their problem. Firefly algorithm has shown good performance for solving various optimization problems. Most of the nature-inspired algorithms have the same problem which can easily trap in local optimal. To overcome this defect, a novel personalized step strategy for firefly algorithm (PSSFA) is presented. It uses large step for the optimal firefly and linearly decreasing step for the other fireflies to improve the ability of exploration. Experiments on 20 test functions show that the proposed algorithm can promote accuracy of the original method. Finally, we integrate PSSFA with k-means clustering for five datasets. This study addresses the multi-objective multi-mode resource-constrained project scheduling problem with payment planning where the activities can be done through one of the possible modes and the objectives are to maximize the net present value and minimize the completion time concurrently. Moreover, renewable resources including manpower, machinery, and equipment as well as non-renewable ones such as consumable resources and budget are considered to make the model closer to the real-world. To this end, a non-linear programming model is proposed to formulate the problem based on the suggested assumptions. To validate the model, several random instances are designed and solved by GAMS-BARON solver applying the ε-constraint method. For the high NP-hardness of the problem, we develop two metaheuristics of non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II and multi-objective simulated annealing algorithm to solve the problem.
