A set of detailed functional specifications is presented here for typewriter-like terminals (e.g. teletypewriters) to be used on-line with time-sharing computer systems. The emphasis is on the functions to be provided (rather than on the specifics of the implementation of such functions), as well as on user needs and on human factors relevant to such terminals. None of the features described presents any major technological or manufacturing problems. Thus, this paper can be viewed as a statement, offered for the benefit of the manufacturers and designers of such terminals, of user needs which exist in this area, as well as an in-depth tutorial on the subject topic.
