We theoretically characterize a compact optical polarizer consisting of two cascaded metasurfaces. The relative movement of the metasurfaces is tailored to create an artificial birefringence effect which is utilized to design optical waveplates.

We introduce a generalized class of arbitrarily sized/shaped particles that satisfy the Kerker zero backscattering condition for normal incidence for all incident polarizations. We prove that self-duality is a sufficient condition to achieve zero backscattering.

An SLM in a simple optical setup is used to generate a random sequence of phase-modulated wavefronts. The resulting speckle patterns are acquired on a camera. The semi-definite algorithm allows computation of the complex transmission matrix of the system. Once the transmission matrix is generated any arbitrary intensity profiles can be produced.

An approach to realize Mach-Zehnder type modulators in free-space is presented. Modulation is based on the relative distance between two parallel gradient metasurfaces. We numerically study the device performance and discuss its potential applications.

We present how waves in ensembles of Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) can be utilized to perform mathematical operations and solve integral equations with kernels that can be reconfigured by adjusting phases in such MZIs.

We propose a wave-based technique to solve integral equations of general format. We numerically show that designer metamaterial kernels combined with proper waveguide feedback networks operate as compact equation solvers, demonstrated via solving Fredholm equations.

We have been investigating light-matter interaction in extreme-parameter structures. We have found that metastructures with unconventional material parameters provide us with unique platforms exhibiting unprecedented classical and quantum metaphotonic features with various potential applications.
