This paper describes features of an interrogation method developed and widely used by law enforcement and private security companies in the U.S. The method is a highly standardized technique of interrogation that is known as a "soft accusation" method, that is, one in which a direct accusation is avoided in the interrogation encounter in favor of other moves that indirectly implicate a subject in wrongful activity. We examine how the method, in contrast to the more common "story elicitation" method, makes use of a "getting acquainted" activity to actually suppress a subject's talk and to initiate and maintain an exceptionally long turn at talk by the interrogator. With this turn, the interrogator develops a case against the subject that is virtually immune to resistance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
