This paper discusses the relation between politics and inflation control in developing countries by comparing cases of Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Israel and Turkey. It is focused on how one aspect of politics, the degree of democracy, affects the ability of a country to introduce and pursue effective economic policies, particularly ones related to inflation. Both qualitative and quantitative analyses are used to assess the how inflation is related to the degree of democracy and the findings indicate that not the degree of democracy itself but its stability is the most important political condition for decreasing inflation. Therefore, both stable authoritarian regimes and consolidated democracies are able to eliminate inflation. Democratization increases inflationary pressures in the short term. Thus, it may be difficult to decrease inflation immediately after a transition from an authoritarian regime to a democratic regime. However, as democracy matures, it becomes easier for governments to introduce and implement anti-inflationary policies. On the hand, unstable authoritarian regimes are as ineffective as new democracies in ending inflation problem. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
