The fundamental challenges posed by the ideological rivalry during the cold war years remains a phenomenon that international relations has had to grapple with ten years after. This is particularly the case when analyzed from the perspective of the spate of violent conflicts and the number of irredentist movements across Africa that has characteristically altered the tussle for power. This has impacted on the nature, function, the use and abuse of power in this part of the world. Since September 11 there has been a reification of power as an important variable in coercing stability and peace in the world. However, what is lacking is an analysis of this understanding and its effect at the domestic level (state). This paper seeks to explore the varied implications of this phenomenon on international politics and how it impacts on the exercise of power in Africa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
