One frequent purpose of violence in civil war is to deepen the cleavage between sides so that reconciliation between them becomes unthinkable. However, little empirical evidence exists about the extent to which this strategy is successful in practice. While there is some evidence that the experience of trauma during war has important consequences for post-conflict political and social life, we know little about whether or how different kinds of violence have different kinds of post-conflict effects. This paper takes another step in understanding the consequences of war by examining the different effects of different kinds of wartime trauma. Using a unique household-level dataset from post-conflict Aceh, Indonesia, I identify three different categories of wartime trauma: the death or disappearance of a friend or loved one, economic loss, and displacement with or without return to the home of origin. The development of democracy in Indonesia after the end to Suharto’s regime succeeded in an improved freedom of the press, yet the continuing conflicts and secessionist movements in both Aceh and Papua escape the realm of everyday media that reaches Indonesian citizens. The conflicts in each territory are complex and originate from long-standing grievances against the Indonesian government. The conflicts in Aceh and Papua continue in part due to a maldistribution of the exported natural resources within the territories, and consequently contribute to furthering the secessionist causes. This paper seeks to answer how the Indonesian national media frames the conflicts in Aceh and Papua. This paper will examine the disparities in national and regional media coverage of the conflicts in Aceh and Papua. This paper contends that the disparity between the national and regional media’s coverage of these issue has contributed to prolonging the conflicts in Aceh and Papua. Next, this paper explores the selection of the resources, which contribute, to conflicts in the areas. In Indonesia, NGOs are controversial. Political activists, development specialists, and academics praise NGOs as a counterweight to the Indonesian government. Others, namely conservative government officials, local community leaders, and fundamentalist Islamic clerics, remain suspicious of NGO activities and motivations. Recent natural and man-made disasters in Indonesia, most notably the tsunami of December 2004, showcased, once again, the problems associated with NGO activities. In Indonesia an increasing number of critics, from the right and the left, are currently critical of the NGO movement, seeing it as an obstruction to development, tradition, and to the very goals of justice and peace that NGOs promised to address. Do NGOs nudge a fragile developing nation in a more progressive and humane direction or do they make the well-known flaws of globalization worse? This paper seeks answers to this fundamental dilemma facing the NGO movement in Indonesia by considering NGO responses to natural and man-made disasters in the provinces of Aceh and West Timor, each of which (for different reasons) have seen great social upheaval. With material drawn from direct experience, it will be argued that NGO corruption, disorganization, government cooptation, religious proselytizing, inequality, and media grandstanding on a massive scale makes globalization in Indonesia even more unequal and unjust. ..PAT.-Conference Proceeding [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
