Blast furnace–basic oxygen furnace (BF–BOF) process is the predominant method for smelting vanadium titano-magnetite (VTM) in China. Hydrogen-rich (H2-rich) gas injection in BF is considered as an important way to reduce CO2 emission under the background of low carbon metallurgy. In this paper, the softening–melting behaviors of VTM sinter in H2–rich gases were investigated by the method of determination of its reduction softening drippinger performance under load. The experimental results indicated that the permeability of VTM sinter during the softening–melting process was improved by increasing the H2 content of the reducing gases. The maximum pressure drop of the burden decreased gradually from 29.76 kPa to 19.97 kPa, and the total characteristic value (representing the comprehensive softening–melting property) also decreased obviously from 2357.52 kPa·°C to 630.94 kPa·°C with the increase in H2 content. The softening interval of the samples was widened, while the melting–dripping interval increased firstly and then decreased. In that case, the position of the melting–dripping zone in BF would move downwards, which was beneficial to smelting smoothly. The thermodynamic analysis indicated that Ti- and Fe-bearing phases were more difficult to be reduced than iron oxides, and H2-rich gas is beneficial to the reduction of that kind of oxides. Titano-magnetite will be reduced stepwise to form Fe2TiO4, and then in the order of FeTiO3→TiO2→Ti(C,N). Wustite (FeO) was an important component during the slag-forming process, whose content increased firstly and then decreased. The Mengyin diamondiferous kimberlite cluster in Shandong province is one of the three major sources of natural diamond in China, where many brown diamonds are mined, but the genesis of their color is still controversial. In this paper, studies including microscopic examination, optical properties of orthogonal polarization, low temperature photoluminescence spectra, infrared spectra, Raman spectra, ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra, luminescence of cathodoluminescence, and transmission electron microscopy have been carried out on the uncut brown diamonds and their slice samples to constrain on the color genesis of brown diamond from the Mengyin deposit. The results show that the brown color is dominantly caused by plastic deformation, and some samples are also caused by non-deformation-related defects and inclusions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

H2O molecules in emerald channels have been extensively discussed over the past half century. Recent studies paid attention to their classification and coordination, but have mostly focused on the type related to Na+. There are few works on the other types, and the related infrared (IR) absorption bands are rather controversial. This paper investigated natural emeralds from China and Colombia by means of micro-Fourier transform infrared (μ-FTIR) spectroscopy, micro-confocal Raman spectroscopy, and laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). The results suggested that doubly (IId) and singly (IIs) coordinated H2O molecules were incorporated in natural emerald channels. Type IId H2O predominated in those emeralds with relatively low alkali content. As the alkali content increased, the proportion of type IIs H2O rose, stemming from the decrease of the H2OII/Na+ apfu ratio. Moreover, IR bands of H2O corresponding to Li+ and Cs+ were tentatively ascribed here. IR bands for D2O and HDO in Colombian sample were observed in the range of 2600–2850 cm−1 and preliminarily assigned, which might be a potential tool for emerald origin determination. The Jian forsterite jade, so named because of its enrichment in end-member forsterite, is a new type of jade found in Ji'an County (Jilin Province, Northeast China). Tourmaline is discovered in Jian forsterite jade deposits and is characterized by magnesium enrichment. In this study, three types of magnesium tourmaline were identified from the pegmatite veins (type 1), the contact zone (type 2), and the tourmaline veins in jade (type 3). The results are shown by the main test methods, such as EPMA, Micro-XRF, and LA-ICP-MS. The substitutions of Fe2+−1Mg2+−1, (□Al3+)−1 (Na+Mg2+)−1, (□Al3+2)−1 (Ca2+R2+2)−1, etc. are inferred by the variations in the major element compositions. From type 1 to type 2 tourmaline, the content of Mg, Sr, and Sn gradually increases, the content of Fe, Zn, K, Mn, Sc, Ga, and Co gradually decreases, the content of Ca initially decreases and then increases, and the content of Na initially increases and then decreases. Type 3 tourmaline has significantly higher Si and Al than the first two types, and the content of the remaining elements lies between the above two types. We propose that tourmalines in Jian forsterite jade deposits are typically of hydrothermal origins and are mainly constrained by magnesium, which is related to the contact metasomatic metamorphism of pegmatite-related hydrothermal fluid with the Jian forsterite jade, and the chemical composition of tourmaline indicates the fluid characteristics of gradual serpentinization of Jian forsterite jade. The present paper focused on the study of spectral–kinetic characteristics of luminescence in two batches of yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG):Ce-based phosphors synthesized in different years by two manufacturers: NPO "Platan" in Russia and "GrandLux" in the People's Republic of China (PRC). Upon studying the structural characteristics of the phosphors—elemental composition, morphology, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns—it was concluded that both types of YAG:Ce phosphors are highly imperfect. The presence of heterogeneities of different nature was accompanied by the introduction—to compensate for charges and elastic stresses—of intrinsic lattice defects during synthesis. There is a high probability of creating complex defects during phosphor synthesis. Luminescence properties (full width at half maximum (FWHM), spectral position of the emission peaks, excitation spectra of emission, emission decay time) are affected by the nearest environment of the luminescence center; whereas the degree of correlation of defects (distance between the components of the donor–acceptor pair) does not depend on the concentration of impurities, intrinsic defects, and their ratio. The results do not fit into the framework of existing ideas regarding the processes in phosphors as systems with widely distributed luminescence centers. In recent years, "Jin Gao Yu" that has been traded as a kind of jade has appeared in areas of the Luonan and Shangnan counties, Shangluo City, Shaanxi Province, attracting the attention of scholars and consumers for its delicate texture and warm color. In this study, infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and electron microprobe analysis were used to conduct a systematic gemmological test and an analysis of "Jin Gao Yu". The results show that "Jin Gao Yu" is a compact mineral aggregate dominated by dolomite, which contains quartz mineral inclusions. The color of "Jin Gao Yu" is grayish-white to earthy-yellow, the refractive index is about 1.54, and the relative density is about 2.86. Its crystal structure is basically the same as that of dolomite, both of which are trigonal systems with granular crystalloblastic textures. It has good crystallinity. The recrystallization phenomenon can be seen under a polarizing microscope. This study determined the species of "Jin Gao Yu", improved its gemological basic data, provided a theoretical basis for the identification of "Jin Gao Yu" in the future, and, also, provided a new direction for the use of dolomite. Freeze-thaw (F-T) damage is the major factor destroying the bond behavior of reinforced concrete in the cold areas of China. The bond behavior between recycled fiber recycled concrete (RFRC) and reinforcement after F-T cycles was investigated in this paper. The pull-out tests were undertaken with the replacement rate (0, 50%, and 100%) of recycled aggregates (RA) and volume content (0, 0.12%, and 0.24%) of recycled fibers (RFs) as test variables. The results demonstrate that the F-T cycles will reduce the bond strength between RFRC and reinforcement. Bond strength decreases by 69.41% after 150 cycles. Moreover, RF can improve the bond strength between RFRC and reinforcing steel. Bonding strength increases by 11.35% with the addition of 0.12% RF. A simplified two-phase bond-slip model between RFRC and reinforced steel after F-T cycles was eventually established, and it correlated well with the experimental results. Gemstones are minerals of gem qualities used for adornment and decoration with the attributes of beauty, durability and rarity. Traditionally, although China has been regarded as the most important source for nephrite, over the past decades, a large variety of gemstone resources have been newly discovered in China owing to continuous exploration works. The vast land with various geological and geochemical backgrounds is rich in gemstone resources with potential for new deposits discoveries. In pegmatites, gemstones are related to granitic magma events and mainly occur in pegmatitic cavities, such as tourmaline, aquamarine, spodumene, spessartine, moonstone, quartz, apatite, and topaz. The eruption of Tertiary basaltic magma provides gem-quality sapphire, spinel, olivine, garnet, and zircon. The supergene oxidation zones of some copper and iron deposits in Hubei and Anhui province host gem-quality turquoise and malachite. Moreover, the formation of the nephrite deposit in China is mostly related to the carbonatite and serpentinite rocks involved in the metamorphic-metasomatic processes. This paper comprehensively introduces the distribution of gemstones deposits, as well as the gemological and mineralogical characteristics of gemstones in China. Pottery is a gem in the history of human civilization and a crystallization of human wisdom. Yunnan Jianshui purple pottery is one of the four famous types of pottery in China, with a long history and superb craftsmanship. Used as tableware, research on the composition and element dissolution of pottery is extremely significant for production and health. This paper takes Jianshui purple pottery as its research object, samples its raw ores and finished products, and conducts X-ray fluorescence, scanning electron microscopy, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry experiments, and dissolution tests. The chemical composition, microstructure, and trace element concentrations of pottery before and after firing were measured. Results show that the dissolution of purple pottery under various use scenarios is low and meets health requirements. Combined with the characteristics of purple pottery, the composition changes and the mechanism of change before and after firing are discussed, which can be used as the theoretical basis for improving pottery production in the future. Machine learning techniques have become a popular solution to prediction problems. These approaches show excellent performance without being explicitly programmed. In this paper, 448 sets of data were collected to predict the neutralization depth of concrete bridges in China. Random forest was used for parameter selection. Besides this, four machine learning methods, such as support vector machine (SVM), k-nearest neighbor (KNN) and XGBoost, were adopted to develop models. The results show that machine learning models obtain a high accuracy (>80%) and an acceptable macro recall rate (>80%) even with only four parameters. For SVM models, the radial basis function has a better performance than other kernel functions. The radial basis kernel SVM method has the highest verification accuracy (91%) and the highest macro recall rate (86%). Besides this, the preference of different methods is revealed in this study. Durability of concrete is of great significance to prolong the service life of concrete structures in corrosive environments. Aiming at the economical and environment-friendly production of concrete by comprehensive utilization of the supplementary cementitious materials made of industrial byproducts, the resistances to chloride penetration, sulfate attack, and frost of high-performance concrete were studied in this paper. Fifteen concretes were designed at different water–binder ratio with the changes of contents of fly ash (FA), silica fume (SF), ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS), and admixture of sulfate corrosion-resistance (AS). The compressive strength, the total electric flux of chloride penetrability, the sulfate resistance coefficient, and the indices of freezing and thawing were measured. Results indicate that, depending on the chemical composition, fineness, and pozzolanic activity, the supplementary cementitious admixtures had different effects on the compressive strength and the durability of concrete; despite having a higher fineness and pozzolanic activity, the GGBS gave out a negative effect on concrete due to a similar chemical composition with cement; the SF and FA presented beneficial effects on concrete whether they were used singly with GGBS or jointly with GGBS; the AS improved the compressive strength and the sulfate corrosion resistance of concrete. In general, the grade of durability was positively related to the compressive strength of concrete. Except for the concretes admixed only with GGBS or with GGBS and FA, others had super durability with the compressive strength varying from 70 MPa to 113 MPa. The concretes with water to binder ratio of 0.29 and total binders of 500 kg/m3 admixed with 7% FA + 8% SF + 8% GGBS or 7% FA + 8% SF + 8% GGBS + (10~12)% AS presented the highest grades of resistances specified in China codes to chloride penetration, sulfate corrosion, and frost, while the compressive strength was about 100 MPa. The alkali−silica reaction (ASR)-induced expansion of mortar bars containing four types of aggregates originating from different regions in northwest China was studied. The chemical composition, mineral composition, vitreous and amorphous substances, and expansion rates were determined using X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, polarizing microscope images, and the accelerated mortar bar test (AMBT). The inhibitory effects of fly ash and silica fume on the aggregate activity were evaluated. The binary mortar mixes were produced and tested, containing cement and fly ash or silica fume as the partial cement replacement. The microstructure and composition of the ASR products were analyzed by scanning electron microscope energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM–EDS). The results show that all four types of aggregates exhibited an alkali activity, and that all expansion rates on the 14th day were higher than the standard of 0.1%. The lowest and highest values were 0.2% and 0.3%, respectively. The primary constituent in the chemical compositions of these aggregates was found to be silica. Polarization microscopy also confirmed that they contained alkali-active cryptolites. Fly ash and silica fume could both inhibit alkali activity expansion and the silica fume exhibited a superior inhibition effect. When the fly ash and silica fume contents were 20% and 10%, respectively, the expansion rates of the mortar bar on the 14th day were all less than 0.03%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Boron is a typical crustal element and largely incompatible in olivine. Most natural olivine samples have very low concentrations of boron. Recently, forsterite with high boron content (up to 60.53 wt% MgO and 1795.91 ppm B) has been discovered in the Jian forsterite jade in the Jian area of northeast China. In this study, B-rich forsterite was examined by electron microprobes, Laser Ablation-Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry, Single crystal X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and infrared spectroscopy. The B-rich forsterite is orthorhombic, existing in space group Pnma, and its unit-cell parameters are: a = 10.1918(7) Å, b = 5.9689(4) Å, c = 4.7484(3) Å, α = 90°, β = 90°, γ = 90°, and V = 288.86(3) Å3. The results of single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis indicate that the unit-cell parameters (a, b, and c) and unit-cell volume of forsterite in Jian forsterite jade are much smaller than those of known olivine. An equivalent set of Raman and infrared spectra were measured for the natural B-rich forsterite and compared to the results for mantle forsterite with a Fo value of ~91. The Raman spectrum of B-rich forsterite is similar to that of mantle olivine. We conclude that the systematic peak position shifts towards higher Raman shift with increasing Fo content. The infrared spectrum of B-rich forsterite crystals is characterized by strong absorption bands at 761, 1168, 1259, and 1303 cm−1, which are assigned to stretching vibrations of BO3 groups. Here, we present well-oriented hematite exsolutions in corundum megacrysts from Cenozoic basalt in China. Crystallographic orientation relationships (CORs) and the interface characters between the hematite exsolutions and the corundum host were analyzed by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM), respectively. The CORs and the regular interface confirm the exsolution and the exsolution was formed under depressurization based on the crystal chemistry theory. There are three groups of exsolutions intersected with ~60°. Two groups of the exsolutions have the same orientation with the host and the other group is twinned to those two groups. Focused ion beam (FIB) for HRTEM foil preparation was carried out. HRTEM photographs show that there are periodic coherency units at (0001) interface. The measured unit lengths are 6.71–6.72 nm, which are in good agreement with every 17- D C r n 01 1 ¯ 2 p r o j e c t i o n or 16- D H e m 01 1 ¯ 2 p r o j e c t i o n . Based on the results, the possibility is that at the interface, the hematite-corundum phases tend to modulate to achieve the maximum coherency in the geological process during exsolution. Glass-ceramics acquired from the melting of rocks have a vast application marketplace. In this study, an olivine basalt rock from Zhangjiakou in China was selected as a raw material to prepare basalt glass-ceramics, and the crystallization kinetics of olivine basalt glass was investigated using differential thermal analysis. Polarizing microscope and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis results revealed that the main mineral compositions of olivine basalt are plagioclase, pyroxene, olivine, and iron oxide(s). Three crystallization peaks were observed in the DSC curve of the olivine basalt glass. The Avrami exponent (n), apparent activation energies for the crystallization, and glass transition of basalt glass were determined using the Owaza method based on data obtained from isothermal measurements. The crystallization activation energies (E) of the three crystallization peaks of olivine basalt glass were 314.20 kJ/mol, 1232.49 kJ/mol, and 696.89 kJ/mol, respectively. In addition to this, the crystal growth index indicated that the crystallization mode in the olivine basalt glass was surface crystallization. The crystallization phases and microstructure of the olivine basalt glass heated at 860 °C, 1100 °C, and 1180 °C were also studied. Exsolution and dislocation microstructures are an important basis to decipher the conditions of metamorphic deformation and evolution processes of its host minerals and rocks. The grossular-rich exsolution in pyrope-rich garnet grains of Bixiling orogenic crustal cumulative peridotite, Dabie orogen, China, was studied by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), conventional and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM/HRTEM) and electron-microprobe analysis (EMPA). Our results indicate that the precursor pyrope-rich host grains had undergone plastic deformation and developed numerous dislocation microstructures before the grossular precipitated. When the pressure and/or temperature decreased during the exhumation of subducted slab, the grossular-rich lamellae exsolved and precipitated at the dislocation structures of host and inherited their shapes. EBSD and TEM analyses show that the crystallographic orientation of exsolution is controlled by, and coherent with, the host grain. These exsolution textures and the chemical composition of precursor garnet correspond to a balance pressure–temperature (P–T) condition of >6 GPa and >850 °C based on the previous thermodynamic models, which indicates that the origin depth of the Bixiling garnet peridotite should be more than 200 km. Kenoargentotetrahedrite-(Fe) is observed as greenish-grey anhedral grains, 50–150 μm in size, in association with galena, sphalerite and chalcopyrite in the Bajiazi Pb-Zn deposit of magmatic-hydrothermal type, Liaoning, China. The empirical formula from electron microprobe analyses is Ag5.50Cu4.17Fe1.75Zn0.31Sb3.96As0.04S12.08, corresponding to the ideal formula Ag6Cu4Fe2Sb4S12. The crystal structure of kenoargentotetrahedrite-(Fe) has been determined and refined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction with R1 = 0.0192 for 1866 (404 unique) reflections. It is cubic, space group I 4 ¯ 3m with unit cell parameters a = 10.4928(2) Å, V = 1155.26(7) Å3 and Z = 2. The structure of kenoargentotetrahedrite-(Fe) is characterized by a poor occupancy of 0.05 of the octahedral S(2) site with the S(2)-M(2) bonding length of 1.9994(8) Å. The six Ag atoms at M(2) around S(2) form an octahedron cluster (Ag6)4+ with the valence state of +4 and Ag-Ag distance of 2.8276(1) Å. The structure is identical to that by Rozhdestvenskaya et al., being composed of a collapsed sodalite-like framework of corner-connected M(1)S4 tetrahedron forming cages containing M(2)6-octahedron cluster, encircled by four SbS3 trigonal pyramids. It is related to the tetrahedrite group minerals with the existence of the (Ag6)4+ cluster replacing the S(2)-centered Ag6 octahedron according to the substitution mechanism 6M(2)Ag+ + S(2)S2−=M(2)(Ag6)4+ + S(2) S. The color-change sapphire occurs in sillimanite-biotite gneiss in Fuping County Hebei province, China, is one of most famous sapphire deposits in China. However, the color genesis, mechanisms of color changing and compositional characteristics of the sapphire remain enigmatic. In this contribution, the coloration in the Fuping sapphire, color changing mechanisms and, compositional characteristics were studied by conventional gemological instruments in conjunction with ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer. The results show that the Fuping sapphire is characterized by purple-blue-to-purple-red changed effect and column-shaped, waist drum-shaped with higher degree of euhedral crystal. Reddish brown rutile inclusions with 120° crossed cleavage are commonly observed. The dominant coloring element of the Fuping sapphire is Fe3+, and subordinate elements are Fe2+, Cr3+ and V3+. The color-change effect is caused by trace elements Cr3+ and V3+. The chemical compositions of Fuping color-change sapphires are analogous to those of metamorphic blue sapphires. When geochemically compared with sapphires from Isalo/Ilakaka deposit in Madagascar, Ratnapura deposit in Sri Lanka and Mogok in Myanmar, the Fuping color-change sapphires have distinctly higher rare element contents of Fe, Cr and Ga. Most of the diamond deposits in China are in the North China Craton. In addition to gem diamonds in kimberlite, a large number of microdiamonds have also been discovered in alkaline dolerites. These microdiamonds show very different characteristics from those recovered in kimberlite. Here, we report the morphology, colour, nitrogen contents, and carbon isotopic compositions of the diamonds recovered from the alkalic dolerites in eastern China. The microdiamonds are mainly cube and rhombic dodecahedron with diameters of 0.2 to 0.6 mm. Infrared spectrum analysis shows that these microdiamonds are mostly type Ib with a small amount of type Ia. The Y centre is obvious in type Ib diamond. Modelling mantle residence times for the IaAB diamonds is about 550 Ma. Nitrogen contents of the diamonds range from 4.5–503 ppm, with a median value of 173 ppm. The total δ13C range of the microdiamonds varies between −18.6 and −21.1‰ and are similar to those of ophiolite diamond. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Al2O3 substrate is widely used as a lining refractory material throughout the blast furnace (BF) process. Accordingly, the erosion of Al2O3 refractory by molten slag has a negative influence on the running cost and smooth operation of BFs. The effect of the erosion behavior of BF primary slag containing FeO-CaO-SiO2-MgO-Al2O3 on Al2O3 substrate refractory was fundamentally investigated using the high-temperature contact angle method and FactSage thermodynamic software based on the composition of BF primary slag in a typical iron and steel enterprise of China. The results showed that the primary slag mentioned above was easily wetted with Al2O3 substrate, and the observed contact angles were 24.5° and 22.0°, when the FeO mass fraction (w(FeO)) was maintained at 10% and 15% of the primary slag, respectively. Moreover, the starting melting temperature of the primary slag with high FeO content, of 1263 °C, was lower. The erosion thickness between the slag and Al2O3 substrate increased from 19.23 to 23.17 μm as the added w(FeO) increased from 10% to 15%. In addition, it was observed via SEM-EDS analysis that the interface layer was formed, and high-melting-point compounds were generated during the wetting process. This was attributed to the interaction between the molten slag and Al2O3 existing in the substrate, which may have inhibited the continuous dissolution of the Al2O3 in the substrate into slag. Good surface wettability and the dissolution of the Al2O3 substrate refractory into the primary slag of the BF are two dominant factors leading to the erosion of the refractory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
