This paper aims at analyzing to which extent the role played by the cultural distance on the choice of entry mode is conditioned by third variables related to the investment. In particular, the potential existence of an interaction effect between the cultural distance and the host's country risk is analyzed, as well as the role of such interaction depending upon the establishment mode used by the investing firm to carry out its investment. One of the most common topics in recent marketing research literature is the study of market orientation, this concept being understood as a certain inclination by organisations towards improved understanding of their surroundings. Many of these studies analyse the relationship between the degree of adoption of the concept of market orientation by organisations and the results they obtain, although there have been a large number of contributions that attempt to explain how various factors of an environmental nature affect this causal relationship either negatively or positively. Thus, in line with this latest research trend, this paper analyses the role of intermediation that certain environmental variables play in the relationship between the market orientation of Spanish university marketing teachers and their results in teaching, research and university extension activities. This paper studies the relationship between technological capabilities and firm performance. To achieve this objective, firstly, it is proposed a typology of technological capabilities and, secondly, it is defined a model where different technological strategies and industry structure are both taken into account. The empirical test was developed in the Spanish biotechnology industry. Results show that not all technological capabilities have the same effects on firm performance, as the strategic potential of such capabilities notably depends on competitive conditions. These results justify that certain traditional evaluation criteria for resources and capabilities can be criticized, and the need of contingent views to analyze the role of technological knowledge in firm success.
