This paper focuses on a philosopher whose thoughts are fundamental, today, to the question of the critical relation between philosophy and culture, or between politics and culture. Alfredo Gómez-Muller is one of the philosophers who has reflected, with great intellectual rigor, on Latin American imaginaries -and especially Colombian imaginaries- of nation, culture, and race. This is an overview of the origins and impact of Benthamism in the New Granada, as well as of some determinant imaginaries of the nation from the 19th century, which serves as an analysis of the importance given by the author to memory and utopia in building and consolidating a stable and lasting peace in Colombia.
