This paper analyzes the communication processes in online media about four TV series, all of them in Netflix (La Casa de Papel, Peaky Blinders, Elite, and Sex Education). We are interested in how these streaming series are reconstructed by specific audiences in social networks. We look at the conversations in the digital fans’ communities organized around these series on social networks such as Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube, and other digital contexts (e.g., digital magazines). A total of 408,536 mentions and 189,040 users were generated as the corpus of the data. The analysis process requires a channeling of data flow, defining a coherent system of themes and categories. The paper shows the elements that fans use to reconstruct the stories, for example, mentioning actors or characters. Very similar dimensions appear both in relation to the stories and the way they are constructed from a pandemic situation.

The aim is to establish whether women are more involved than men in uploading videos related to television fictional programs. To that end, we analyzed the number of videos uploaded by men or women and the kind of narrative content shared by each gender. The methodology applied was a quantitative analysis, based on a selection of videos from YouTube regarding the 21 series premiered in 2013 in Spanish networks. The research suggests interesting results, mainly that men upload more videos than women do, and that they have more visits and reviews. However, the fanmade videos uploaded by women are more creative and more richly elaborated.

We analyzed the Facebook group page of a television series broadcasted in Spain, Pulseras Rojas. The social network is a transmedia platform and a resource of opportunities to stimulate viewer engagement. Our focus is traffic on Facebook derived from the second season, broadcasted by Antena 3 Spanish network between July and August 2013. Following the proposal of Askwith (2007), we consider seven touchpoints: Expanded access, repackaged content, ancillary content, branded products, related activities, social interaction and interactivity. We studied Facebook entries in order to classify the user’s type of involvement, calibrate the corporate response to user demands and evaluate opportunities of both business and participatory culture stimulated by the social network. Facebook is revealed as a powerful tool to engage the viewer, although the network communication strategy has an incipient and undeveloped management that fails to take full advantage of the interactive, two-way nature of the social network.
