Wearing face masks has been an essential part of healthcare workers' lives since the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. This study aims to determine the association between prolonged face mask-wearing and dry eye disorder (DED) among female nurses.An online questionnaire-based cross-sectional study was conducted at King Abdulaziz University Hospital, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, between May 2021 and February 2022. It covered sociodemographic data, conditions associated with ocular irritation, and questions related to mask-wearing duration. The Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) survey was used to measure DED severity. Binary logistic regression analysis was done and Odd's ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were reported.A total of 266 female nurses responded to this study. The majority of the sample (71.1%) fell in the normal-mild DED category (OSDI 0-22), while (28.9%) were categorized as the moderate-severe DED category (OSDI22). We found a significant independent association of dry eye disorder with wearing a mask for6 hours/day (OR 2.066, 95% CI: 1.083-3.944). Other significant predictors of DED in this study were wearing corrective eyeglasses (OR 2.382, 95% CI: 1.296-4.376) and having rheumatoid arthritis (OR 17.289, 95% CI: 1.794-166.7).Wearing a face mask for6 hours/day was significantly associated with moderate to severe DED among female nursing staff. Ophthalmologists should be aware of this adverse effect in order to promote ways to relieve this condition.

Background Appendicitis is a common reason for hospitalization. Rarely do people with acute appendicitis have an appendiceal mass called an abscesses or inflamed phlegmon. The goal of this study was to determine the prevalence of different appendiceal tumors including neuroendocrine tumors, adenocarcinoma, carcinoid, and mucinous and evaluate patient demographic data (e.g., age and gender) at a major tertiary care center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Materials and methods We conducted a cross-sectional analytical review of patient records of 1513 patients who received an appendectomy and were diagnosed with acute appendicitis from 2015 to 2020 at King Abdulaziz Medical City, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. We used nonprobability sampling to collect the sample. The study included patients older than 14 years. We also recorded patient demographic information, including age, gender, history, and final pathology. Results The mean age of our study population was 27.9 years (standard deviation [SD], 12.3 years). Our study had 958 male patients and 555 female patients. One thousand four hundred fifty-eight patients (96.3%) had right lower quadrant (RLQ) tenderness, and 228 patients had fever (15.0%). One thousand one hundred thirteen patients (73.5%) had rebound tenderness, 1,178 had nausea (77.8%), and 1,100 had high white blood cell (WBC) counts (72.7%). One thousand four hundred eighty-six patients received laparoscopic surgery (98.2%). Most patients (95.3%; n=1,443) had no postoperative complications. Appendicitis pathology was present in 1,381 patients (91.3%). Only 15 patients (1%) had tumor-related pathology, and these patients were significantly older than patients with nontumor-related pathology (p.001) and had less RLQ pain, rebound tenderness, and pain migration but higher WBC counts. Pain migration was significantly inversely correlated with age: as age increased, pain migration was reported less often (odds ratio, 0.99, 95% confidence interval, 0.98 to 0.99; p=0.001). Conclusion This study aimed to determine the prevalence and types of appendiceal tumors in cases of acute appendicitis and the corresponding patient demographic data at a major tertiary care center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. According to our results, patients with appendicitis present with fever, rebound tenderness, nausea, and high WBC count. Appendiceal masses mainly occur in a later age group with less migration of pain and high WBC count. However, migration of pain is inversely related to age. Physicians treating patients with acute appendicitis should bear these data in mind and consider the presence of appendiceal tumors in appropriate patients.

Background Allergic fungal rhinosinusitis (AFRS) is a hypersensitive response to fungi within the sinus cavity. Children represent a challenging group of patients with sinonasal disorders, as their sinus anatomy is not fully developed. This study aimed to determine the various clinical manifestations and management outcomes in children with AFRS. Methods A retrospective chart review of children who underwent sinus surgery for AFRS at a tertiary healthcare center between 2005 and 2021 was performed. Demographics, clinical manifestations, radiological and laboratory results, treatment regimens, complications, and recurrence rates were collected. Subanalysis was performed based on age at first surgery: group A (13 years) and group B (≥13 years). Results Overall, 35 children underwent sinus surgery for AFRS during the study period. The mean patient age at the time of surgery was 14 years. Bilaterality was present in 15/35 (42.9%) patients and anosmia in 12/35 (34.3%). Polyps on examination were present in 31/35 (88.6%) patients and proptosis in 8/35 (22.9%). Sub-analysis revealed that group A showed less bilateral disease (11.4%) than group B (31.4%) and a lower Lund-Mackay score (median=11.50 and 17, respectively, p=0.002). Conclusion Age at surgery did not have an impact on the outcome. A high index of suspicion should be exercised when dealing with children with sinonasal symptoms that do not respond to routine treatment and should be investigated for chronic sinusitis.

Introduction The passive fit of a full arch implant-supported prosthesis is one of the elements influencing implant success. Achieving the passive fit of a prosthesis requires verification of the master cast before the fabrication of the framework. A verification jig is a common way to verify the implant master cast and ensure the accuracy of the implant impression and produced cast. Different materials can be used to fabricate verification jigs, and each material exhibits different dimensional changes. In this study, we compared the accuracies of verification jig materials by 3D assessment. Materials and methods A type IV stone cast with four implant analogs was constructed and used as a control. Verification jigs were constructed from five different materials, and test casts were made from these jigs and poured using low expansion stone (type IV), resulting in five groups (n=5). All test casts and the control cast were scanned using a lab scanner. The scans of test casts were superimposed on that of the control cast for 3D accuracy assessment. The distortion of the implant analogs was recorded using Geomagic Design X and Geomagic Control X software (3D Systems, Rock Hill, South Carolina, USA). Statistical differences in the 3D accuracies between the five groups were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test. Result The photopolymerizable resin group had a mean value of 23.16 (± 0.88) µm; the composite group had a mean value of 46.72 (± 2.122) µm; the GC pattern group had a mean of 23.51 (± 0.736) µm; the type III stone group had a mean of 19.84 (± 1.017) µm; the type IV stone group had a mean of 18.72 (± 0.819) µm. The Kruskal-Wallis test indicated that there were statistically significant differences between groups 2 (composite), 4 (type III stone), and 5 (type IV stone). Conclusion The most accurate cast was produced by type IV stone, followed by type III stone, photopolymerizable resin, GC pattern, and composite in order of decreasing accuracy. Within the limitations of the study, a material with low distortion and high accuracy is recommended when fabricating verification jigs of implant-supported complete dental prostheses.

Background It has been established that patients with COVID-19 pneumonia are more vulnerable to developing thromboembolic complications. Computed tomography (CT) scan of the chest is an essential investigation modality in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia and has an important role in the diagnosis and identification of complications. Methods A retrospective observational study was conducted on patients admitted with COVID-19 pneumonia who underwent CT scans of the chest. The data regarding demographic information, clinical information, and CT findings were collected from electronic health records. Multivariable regression analysis was used to identify the independent factors associated with thromboembolic complications. Results The study included a total of 276 patients, including 178 (64.5%) men and 98 (35.5%) women. In total, 64 patients were found to have thromboembolic events, yielding a complication rate of 23.2%. Multivariable logistic regression revealed that patients aged 51-65 years (Odds ratio [OR] = 8.9; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 3.0-26.5) and65 years (OR = 18.7; 95% CI: 7.6-46.1) had a higher likelihood of having thromboembolic complications compared to those aged 18-35 years. Further, the crazy-paving appearance of opacity was identified as an independent factor associated with thromboembolic events (OR = 14.2; 95% CI: 6.9-29.4). Further, patients with severe pulmonary parenchymal involvement were 30 times (OR = 30.6; 95% CI: 9.8-95.5) more likely to have thromboembolic complications compared with those having mild involvement. Conclusions The radiological findings on the CT scan of the chest can provide crucial prognostic information for patients with COVID-19 in terms of thromboembolic events. Clinicians need to keep a high index of suspicion for pulmonary embolism and deep venous thrombosis when they encounter patients with crazy-paving opacity appearances on CT scans, particularly among patients with severe parenchymal involvement.

Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) has a detrimental influence on the quality of life (QoL). The goal of this study was to evaluate the QoL of patients with PsA and its determinants at the King Abdulaziz University Hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 60 PsA patients. A questionnaire was used to collect data about their demographics. Assessment of health-related quality of life (HRQOL) was done by the Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36). The Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy (FACIT)-Fatigue and the FACIT-General (FACIT-G) scales were used to assess fatigue. The Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI) was used to assess disease activity.The mean age of the patients was 50.33 ± 11.15 years and 78.3% were females. The mean HRQOL, FACIT-G, FACIT, and BASDAI scores were 59.99 ± 34.67, 28.18 ± 5.95, 20.01 ± 9.68, and 4.05 ± 2.54, respectively. The HRQOL scores were found to have a highly significant negative correlation with both the FACIT and BASDAI scores, as well as the patients' age and BMI. The FACIT-G scores and the BASDAI scores, as well as the BASDAI scores and the FACIT scores, were found to have a strong positive correlation with age and BMI.PsA has a significant detrimental influence on QoL, with a link between QoL and disease activity and fatigue. A greater understanding of QoL issues will help improve the quality of care.
