We pay tribute to Dr. Nick Lauter (1972–2021), who was a USDA-ARS Research Geneticist and affiliate faculty member in Plant Pathology and Microbiology at Iowa State University. An avid researcher and mentor, he valued precision in experimentation, out-of-the-box thinking, collaborative science and the sheer fun of conducting research. Herein, we honor Nick for his many contributions to science and his devotion to maize. Above all, Nick was a kind human being, and we feel extremely fortunate that he was such an integral part of our research community.
