Experimental structural data for bis(terpyridine)iron(II) and a series of related iron(II) complexes, featuring either substituted terpyridine or tris-azinyl analogues of terpyridine, are presented and analyzed in terms of the Mean Absolute Deviation (MAD) from the average experimental data for each specific complex. The experimental structural data are then juxtaposed with density functional theory (DFT) calculated data obtained using various combinations of DFT functionals and basis sets, with and without the inclusion of Grimme D3 empirical dispersion correction. These diverse computational approaches yield optimized geometries that are subsequently compared against the available experimental structural data to assess their accuracy. The aim is to identify a reliable DFT method for determining the geometries of bis(terpyridine)iron(II) and its related complexes.

We present data on the computed lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy (ELUMO) of two series of Cu(II)-β-diketonato complexes, calculated via density functional theory (DFT). These are correlated to experimental reduction potential data (Epc), obtained by cyclic voltammetry under different experimental conditions (solvent, working and reference electrodes). All calculations were done with the B3LYP functional in the gas phase. Knowledge of the influence of different ligands on the redox potential of copper complexes, as measured by DFT calculated energy data, are very useful. These theoretical correlations are vital in the further design of similar compounds, to be customized for specific applications. The correlations can be used to predict and fine-tune redox potentials prior to synthesis, saving experimental chemists time and laboratory expenses. Redox potentials influence the catalytic property of bis(β-diketonato)copper(II) compounds. New catalysts can therefore be customized with a specific reduction potential and catalytic activity. Further, the Cu(II/I) redox couple is a potential alternative as electrolyte for dye-sensitized solar cells [1–3]. The redox potential of the electrolyte can drastically affect the photovoltage output and should therefore be optimized for efficiency and durability. By adjusting the reduction potential via different ligands on the complex, the properties of copper dyes can be fine-tuned at molecular level. Theoretical understanding of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) liquid depends on the understanding of the DMSO clusters. In this work, we provide the structures and the energetics of the DMSO clusters. The structures have been generated using ABCluster and further optimized at the MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ level of theory. The final structures have been optimized at two different levels of theory: PW6B95D3/aug-cc-pVDZ and ωB97XD/aug-cc-pVDZ. The Cartesian coordinates of the structures optimized at the MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ level of theory are also reported. The relative energies of the structures can be used to locate the most favorable structures of the DMSO clusters. The Cartesian coordinates of the structures can be used for further investigations on DMSO clusters. In addition, we report the data related to the quantum theory of atoms in molecule (QTAIM) analysis of the investigated clusters. The QTAIM data reported in this work can be used to understand and determine the nature of non-covalent interactions in DMSO clusters. This data article provides density functional theory calculated structural (bond lengths and angles, coordinates of optimized geometries) and electronic (Mulliken spin population and character of frontier molecular orbitals) data of a series of 4’-substituted bis(2,2’;6’2’’-terpyridine)manganese complexes in four different oxidation states. The bis-cationic (n = 2) [Mn(tpy)2]2+ complexes are experimentally well known (Sjödin et al., 2008), while little or none experimental structural data of the tetra-cationic (n = 4, Romain et al., 2009, 2009), tris-cationic (n = 3, Romain et al., 2009) and mono-cationic (n = 1, Wang et al., 2014) [Mn(tpy)2]n+ complexes are available. We have established a design to increase the absorption capacity, optoelectronic, linear and nonlinear optical properties of the graphene oxide nanosheet (GON) based on the coronene molecule [C24H12] with the help of doping, using the aluminum atom. The attachment of functional groups to the coronene surface was defined according to the Lerf-Klinowski model, based on experimental predictions [1]. Two GON structures (GON1 and GON2 with formula (C24H11)(O)(OH)COOH)) have been proposed for this purpose, and it should be noted that each of them is distinguished by a different distribution of functional groups within their honeycomb lattice. A series of substitutions of the carbon atoms of the two isomers considered GON1 and GON2 were performed with the aluminum atom, resulting in the abbreviated derivative systems GON1-Alx and GON2-Alx (x = 1–6), respectively to each of the GON1 and GON2 units. In this work, we provide data carried out in the gas phase, from density functional theory (DFT) methods that allowed us to understand the effects of aluminum atom doping on the circular graphene oxide nanosheets. First, we report the wavenumber data related to the IR spectrum peak characteristics computed at the B3LYP, B3LYP-D3 and ωB97XD/6–31+G(d,p) levels of theory, that allowed us to validate the designs of both proposed graphene oxide models. Then, we provide electronic, reactivity, optoelectronic, linear and nonlinear optical data parameters of both graphene oxide nanosheets and their aluminum-doped derivatives computed at the B3LYP, B3LYP-D3 and /6-31+G(d,p) levels of theory. Finally the UV-vis spectra of the investigated compounds evaluated from time-dependent (TD) B3LYP and B3LYP-D3/6-31+G(d,p) levels of theory and the HOMO & LUMO orbitals of the derivatives of graphene oxide isomers computed at the B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p) level of theory are provided. In addition, the raw data of UV-vis spectra, optoelectronic parameters, Cartesian coordinates of all studied compounds and also those of IR spectra of both studied graphene oxide models are provided as supplementary file. The data reported in this work are useful to expose some specific positions of aluminum within circular model of graphene oxide nanosheet that improve its electronic, reactive, optoelectronic, linear and nonlinear optical characteristics. All the formulas and details of calculation performed to obtain the data reported in this work are provided in our previous work (Foadin et al., 2020) and summarized in the experimental section of this paper. To learn more about the ideal doping positions of the aluminum atom within both proposed graphene oxide designs that increase their electronic, reactivity, optoelectronic, linear optical and nonlinear optical properties, respectively, please see the corresponding main research paper (Foadin et al., 2022).

Furan clusters are very important to understand the dynamics and properties of the furan solvent. They can be used combined with quantum cluster equilibrium theory to theoretically determine the thermodynamics properties of the furan solvent. To understand the structures of the furan clusters, one needs to understand the non-covalent interactions that hold the furan molecules together. In this paper, we have provided the data necessary to understand the non-covalent interactions in furan clusters. Firstly, the structures of the furan clusters have been generated using classical molecular dynamics as implemented in the ABCluster code. Secondly, the generated structures have been fully optimized at the MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ level of theory. The optimized Cartesian coordinates of all the investigated structures are reported in this work to enable further investigations of the furan clusters. These Cartesian coordinates will save computational time for all further investigations involving the furan clusters. Thirdly, to understand the nature of the non-covalent interactions in furan clusters, we have performed a quantum theory of atoms in molecule (QTAIM) analysis using AIMAll program. Using QTAIM, we have provided the critical points, bond paths and their related properties for all the investigated structures. These data can be used to identify and classify the non-covalent interactions in furan clusters. The reader can refer to the original article for further information and discussion of the data provided herein Malloum and Conradie (2022) [1].

We have reported herein the data to understand the nature and number of non-covalent interactions that stabilize the structures of the thiophene clusters. In addition, we have also provided the optimized Cartesian coordinates of all the structures of the investigated thiophene clusters. Initially, the geometries have been generated using the ABCluster code which performs a global optimization to locate local and global minima structures of molecular clusters. The located geometries have been optimized at the MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ level of theory using Gaussian 16 suite of programs. To understand the nature of non-covalent interactions, we have performed a quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) analysis on all the structures of the thiophene dimer. Furthermore, the QTAIM analysis has been performed also on the most stable structure of the thiophene trimer and tetramer. We have used the AIMAll program to perform the QTAIM analysis. The data reported in this paper contains the critical points, the bonds paths and their related properties, for each investigated structures. Besides, the data contains the optimized Cartesian coordinates of all the investigated structures of the thiophene clusters. This can be use for any further investigations involving thiophene clusters. For further information and analysis, the reader is referred to the original related research article (Malloum and Conradie, 2022).

Electronic and free energy data of density functional theory calculated optimized geometries of the reactants, transition state of the oxidative addition reaction and different reaction products of the [Rh(RCOCHCOCF3)(CO)(PPh3)] + CH3I reactions (R = C4H3S, C4H3S-C4H2S and C4H3S-C4H2S-C4H2S) are presented to illustrate the influence of the amount of thiophene groups, the implicit solvent and dispersion correction on the calculated energies. All calculations were done with the B3LYP functional, in gas as well as in solvent phase, with and without dispersion correction. The data can save computational chemists time when choosing an appropriate method to calculate reaction energies of oxidative addition reactions. Detailed knowledge of energies involved in the oxidative addition reaction of methyl iodide to rhodium complexes have an important implication in catalysis, for example the Monsanto process where methanol is converted to acetic acid catalysed by a rhodium complex. The data presented in this article is related to the research article entitled “Electrochemical and electronic properties of a series of substituted polypyridine ligands and their Co(II) complexes” (Ferreira et al., 2019). This data article presents electrochemical data of five polypyridine ligands, as well as of the three redox couples of each of their corresponding five polypyridine-containing Co(II) complexes. All complexes exhibit two Co-based redox couples (CoIII/II and CoII/I), as well as a ligand-based reduction of the Co(I) complex.

The data presented in this paper are related to the research article entitled “Synthesis, characterisation and electrochemistry of eight Fe coordination compounds containing substituted 2-(1-(4-R-phenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)pyridine ligands, R=CH3, OCH3, COOH, F, Cl, CN, H and CF3.” (Conradie et al., 2019) [1]. This paper presents electrochemical and density functional theory data of 4-phenyl-substituted dichloro(bis{2-[1-(4-R-phenyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl-κN3]pyridine-κN})iron(II) compounds, containing differently substituted 2-(1-(4-R-phenyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-1-yl)pyridine ligands (L2 – L9) (Tawfiq et al., 2014) [2]. Density functional theory calculated data of five different structural isomers for each compound, consistently show that the title compounds are octahedral and that the isomer with the chloride atoms, the pyridine nitrogens and the triazol nitrogens trans to each other, has the lowest energy. Natural bonding orbital (NBO) data and quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) data of dichloro(bis{2-[1-(phenyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl-κN3]pyridine-κN})iron(II) show origin for the preference of the trans isomer.

The data presented in this paper are related to the research article entitled “Electrochemical properties of a series of Co(II) complexes, containing substituted phenanthrolines” (Ferreira et al., 2018) [1]. This paper presents detailed electrochemical data of eight octahedral Co(II) complexes containing functionalized phenanthrolines-ligands. The data illustrate the shift in the CoIII/II and CoII/I redox couples due to different substituents on the phenanthrolines. Polypyridine Co(II) and Co(III) complexes exhibit properties as potential mediators in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) (Gajardo and Loeb, 2011; Yu et al., 2011) [2,3]. The ability of a compound to act as a redox mediator to be used in DSSC, depends on the redox potential of the compound (Grätzel, 2005) [4]. Accurate data of the CoIII/II redox couple is presented here.

The data presented in this paper are related to the research article entitled “Novel dichloro(bis{2-[1-(4-methylphenyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl-κN3]pyridine-κN})metal(II) coordination compounds of seven transition metals (Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn and Cd)” (Conradie et al., 2018) [1]. This paper presents characterization and structural data of the 2-(1-(4-methyl-phenyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-1-yl)pyridine ligand (L2) (Tawfiq et al., 2014) [2] as well as seven dichloro(bis{2-[1-(4-methylphenyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl-κN3]pyridine-κN})metal(II) coordination compounds, [M(L2)2Cl2], all containing the same ligand but coordinated to different metal ions. The data illustrate the shift in IR, UV/VIS, and NMR (for diamagnetic complexes) peaks when L is coordinated to the metals, as well as the influence of the different metals on the peak positions. Solid state structural data is presented for M = Ni and Zn, while density functional theory calculated energies, structures and optimized coordinates are provided for the lowest energy cis and trans conformations for L2 as well as [M(L2)2Cl2] with M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn and Cd.

There has been an increase in the use of antidepressant drugs owing to significant economic challenges across the globe. Consequently, the increase in production of such drugs has impacted pharmaceutical pollution of industrial wastewaters discharged into the environment. Hence, there is a need to develop efficient adsorbents for antidepressant wastewater treatment. The impregnation of silver nanoparticles on biowaste was found to be highly effective in the treatment of oil-polluted water but has not been utilized in the adsorption of drugs. Herein, the dataset associated with the adsorption of antidepressants onto Ananas Comosus Peel (AP) and Silver nanoparticle-loaded Ananas Comosus peel (AgAP) was reported. Batch adsorption methodology was used to study the effect of antidepressant concentration (10–50 mg/L), sonication time (10–120 min), temperature (300–320 K) and adsorbent dosage (0.10–0.18 g). The concentration of antidepressant (Nortriptyline) in solution before and after adsorption was determined by the UV-Spectrophotometer at a maximum wavelength of 239 nm. The isotherm dataset was obtained from the Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin-Raduskevich models, while kinetic data was evaluated by the pseudo-first order-pseudo-second-order, film diffusion and intraparticle diffusion rate equations. The data on the thermodynamics and adsorbent reusability were also provided. The dataset showed an adsorption capacity of 3.27 mg/g and 4.74 mg/g for AP and AgAP, respectively. The dataset is important to material and environmental scientists and revealed the efficiency of AP and AgAP in the treatment of antidepressant wastewater.

Structures of neutral and protonated acetonitrile in the solvent phase are important to describe proton behavior and to calculate thermodynamic quantities related to the solvation of ions or molecules in acetonitrile. In this work, we provide data related to the calculation of the solvation free energy and enthalpy of the proton in acetonitrile. We have thoroughly explored the potential energy surfaces (PESs) of neutral and protonated acetonitrile clusters from dimer to heptamer in the solvent phase at both MN15/6–31++G(d,p) and MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ levels of theory. We report the structures and relative stability of neutral and protonated acetonitrile clusters in the solvent phase at the MN15/6–31++G(d,p) level of theory. In addition, enthalpies and free energies of neutral and protonated acetonitrile are also reported at the MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ and MP2/CBS levels of theory. Furthermore, Cartesian coordinates of the clusters in the solvent phase as optimized at the MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ level of theory are provided as supplementary file. The data provided in this work will be useful for further investigations that would involve neutral and protonated acetonitrile clusters. The free energies and enthalpies of the investigated clusters in the solvent phase have been used to compute the solvation free energy and enthalpy of the proton in acetonitrile. Structural and density functional theory calculated data of three octahedral hexaaquametal(II) ions containing different metals (Cr, Ni or Cu) are presented to illustrate different geometries these octahedral hexaaquametal(II) ions can have. The density functional theory optimized geometries exhibit either a regular octahedral geometry, an octahedral elongated or an octahedral compressed geometry. Experimental structures exhibit octahedral or distorted octahedral geometries, the latter includes octahedral elongated, octahedral compressed and orthorhombic distorted geometries.

The theoretical description of solvation processes, ions diffusion as well as proton transfer processes taking place in a given solvent should involve clusters of the solvent molecule. In this paper, we provided the data related to the calculation of the water-ammonia, water-acetonitrile and ammonia-acetonitrile proton transfer free energy and proton transfer enthalpy at standard conditions. After thorough exploration of the potential energy surfaces of the clusters using density functional theory (DFT), Cartesian coordinates as well as free energies and enthalpies of the most stable structures of neutral and protonated water clusters, neutral and protonated ammonia clusters, and neutral and protonated acetonitrile clusters from monomer to nonamer are provided. This data can be reused in further investigations involving neutral and protonated water clusters, neutral and protonated ammonia clusters, and neutral and protonated acetonitrile clusters. The enthalpies and free energies of the aforementioned clusters have been used to compute the water-ammonia, water-acetonitrile and ammonia-acetonitrile proton transfer free energies and proton transfer enthalpies for each cluster size. The data presented in this article are relevant to the research article, “Electrochemistry of Os bipyridyl and phenanthroline complexes, comparison with Ru and Fe” (van der Westhuizen, 2020). Cyclic voltammograms illustrating OsII/III oxidations of eight osmium(II) complexes are presented in this article. The data were obtained under similar experimental conditions, at scan rates with magnitudes ranging from 0.05 V.s−1 to 10.00 V.s−1, in acetonitrile as solvent and tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate as supporting electrolyte. Potentials are reported versus the iron(II) redox couple in ferrocene.

The data presented in this paper is related to the research article entitled “Synthesis, Spectroscopy, Electrochemistry and DFT of Electron-Rich Ferrocenylsubphthalocyanines” [1] where electrochemical redox data and cyclic voltammograms at only a scan rate of 0.10 V s−1 of four ferrocenylsubphthalocyanine dyads Fc(CH2)nCO2BSubPc(H)12 (n = 0, 1 or 3) and FcCO(CH2)2CO2BSubPc(H)12, are presented. This data article provides extensive electrochemical redox data and cyclic voltammograms at various scan rates from 0.05 up to 5.00 V s−1 to illustrate the effect of the different scan rates on the electrochemical behaviour of the four ferrocenylsubphthalocyanine dyads.

Density functional theory (DFT) free energy data and the reaction mechanism of the rhodium(triphenylphosphine)carbonyl-2,4-dioxo-3-pentyl-4-hydroxybenzoate plus iodomethane reaction are presented. The rhodium(I) reactant is a simplified model of the rhodium(I) of the rhodium(triphenylphosphine)carbonyl-2,4-dioxo-3-pentyl-4-decanyloxybenzoate plus iodomethane reaction (full model), presented in the related research article “Rhodium(triphenylphosphine)carbonyl-2,4-dioxo-3-pentyl-4-decanyloxybenzoate: A DFT study of Oxidative Addition and Methyl Migration” [1]. The goal is to illustrate that DFT calculations of a simplified model give the same information regarding the reaction scheme and free energy data as for the full model, while it requires much less computational resources to obtain the data. Furthermore the reaction scheme of the simplified model are in agreement with experimental observation of the full model [2].

Data in this article is associated with our research article, Electronic Properties of Fe Charge Transfer Complexes – a Combined Experimental and Theoretical Approach [1].The oxidation and reduction potentials of fourteen FeII complexes are presented here, as extracted from the redox data obtained from its associated cyclic voltammograms, which were measured at scan rates varying from 0.05 V.s−1 to 5.00 V.s−1, under similar experimental conditions. Acetonitrile was used as solvent, and tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate as supporting electrolyte. All data are reported versus the FeII redox couple in ferrocene.

Redox data obtained from cyclic voltammetry experiments of the FeII/III and ring-based oxidation and reductions of subphthalocyanines containing a ferrocenylcarboxylic acid as axial ligand, is presented in this data in brief article. The FeII/III oxidation of ferrocenylsubphthalocyanines which containing the electron-withdrawing fluorine atoms at the peripheral and non-peripheral positions, are ca. 0.100 V more positive than FeII/III oxidation of ferrocenylsubphthalocyanines containing hydrogens at the peripheral and non-peripheral positions. Redox data obtained from cyclic voltammetry experiments of the FeII/III oxidation of six ferrocenyl carboxylic acids is presented in this data in brief article. Data is obtained from the cyclic voltammograms at scan rates of two orders of magnitude (0.05 – 5.00 Vs−1) using (i) acetonitrile as solvent and tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate as supporting electrolyte and (ii) dichloromethane as solvent and tetrabutylammonium tetrakispentafluorophenylborate, as the electrolyte. Data is reported versus the FeII/III redox couple of ferrocene. The data presented in this paper are related to the research article titled “Redox Behaviour of [Ru(β-diketonato)3] Compounds” [1]. This paper presents structural and energy data obtained from the density functional theory (DFT) computations. The energy data is related to experimentally obtained redox potential values. Various relationships are presented for the RuIII/II and RuIII/IV redox couples, involving both their experimental redox data as well as DFT calculated data, such as frontier orbital energies (EHOMO and ELUMO) and calculated Mulliken electronegativity values.

In this data article, using density functional theory calculations, it is shown that in the gas phase, free from crystal packing effects, different elongation and compression Jahn-Teller geometries of fac and mer tris(trifluoroacetylacetonato)-manganese(III) are possible. A careful construction of input geometries made it possible to obtain the density functional theory calculated optimized geometries of different elongation and compression Jahn-Teller geometries of fac and mer tris(trifluoroacetylacetonato)-manganese(III). The mer CF3–CF3 elongation isomer has the lowest energy (Fig. 1), while in the solid state a mer CH3–CH3 compression tris(trifluoroacetylacetonato)-manganese(III) isomer is experimentally characterized [1]. The rare experimental example of a compression tris(β-diketonato)-manganese(III) structure is ascribed to intermolecular F⋯F and F⋯H interactions between the tris(trifluoroacetylacetonato)-manganese(III) molecules in the solid crystalline state, contributing to the distortion of the coordination polyhedron of tris(trifluoroacetylacetonato)-manganese(III) from the expected elongation Jahn-Teller geometry, to the observed higher energy electronic state with compression Jahn-Teller distortion. Bis(acetylacetonato)copper(II) can be synthesized economically and with ease by the reaction between acetylacetone and a copper salt (Cu(OAc)2 or CuCl2·2H2O). When used as catalyst, bis(acetylacetonato)copper(II) is sometimes being oxidized to Cu(III) or reduced to Cu(I), although only the structure of the neutral form is known experimentally. The content of this paper provides computational chemistry calculated data of the geometry, electronic structure, spin state and frontier orbitals for the neutral, as well as the oxidized and reduced forms of the bis(acetylacetonato)copper(II) molecule. This data shows that both the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of the neutral molecule are copper based. The neutral molecule is a spin = ½ system. The data shows that the spin state of both the oxidized and reduced molecules is zero.
