Bottom trawling significantly impacts benthic communities, reducing habitat complexity and biodiversity. The distribution and abundance of key species in the northeastern Gulf of Cádiz, Spanish waters of Atlantic Ocean, such as soft-bottom octocorals and burrowing megafauna, were examined using video observations and Spatial Distribution Models developed with Random Forest. The study was conducted in the Site of Community Importance " Volcanes de fango del golfo de Cádiz " focusing on depths between 300 and 950 metres depth. The effects of environmental variables and bottom trawling on octocoral distribution and abundance were assessed, and management strategies for habitat protection were proposed. Bottom trawling was found to decrease habitat suitability for large octocoral species while the abundance of Norway lobster was positively correlated with certain values of bottom trawling effort. The study suggests that bottom trawling causes significant reduction in octocoral distributions, substrate homogenization, and habitat differentiation. Abstract Scleractinian cold-water corals (CWCs), such as Lophelia pertusa and Madrepora oculata , build complex frameworks and carbonate mound habitats in the deep-sea and are regarded as deep-sea biodiversity hotspots. However, there is a paucity of research regarding temporal change in the biological composition of these CWC habitats and analysis of this change is critical, especially considering the anthropogenic influences impacting upon these vital habitats. This study is the first to analyse temporal biological change on a CWC mound at a small temporal (4 years) and large spatial (entire mound) scale. Video datasets were collected over the Piddington Mound of the Moira Mounds, Porcupine Seabight, offshore Ireland, in 2011 and 2015. 0.25 m2 quadrats were placed on 510 screenshots from each year (1020 total). Species were identified and quantified. CTD data were also analysed to investigate potential contributory causes of change. There was a highly significant (P < 0.01) decline in average M. oculata percentage cover from 2011 (1.37 ± 3.79%) to 2015 (0.70 ± 2.76%); however, there was not a significant change (P = 0.74) in average L. pertusa percentage cover in 2011 (2.33 ± 7.52%) when comparing it with 2015 (5.28 ± 7.88%). Additionally, there was an increase in average percentage cover of two poriferan species, Aphrocallistes sp. and Hexadella sp., from 2011 (1.18 ± 2.35%; 0.21 ± 0.42%, respectively) to 2015 (2.15 ± 3.48%; 0.33 ± 0.55%, respectively) (P < 0.01 for both species). Shannon-Weiner and Pielou's Species Evenness diversity indices were generally higher in 2011 than in 2015. This overall decline in diversity and increase in poriferan abundances is attributed to the decline in M. oculata , which may have been influenced by altered environmental conditions in 2015, as indicated by the CTD data. Moreover, differing biological and ecological responses of L. pertusa and M. oculata to environmental changes were considered and discussed as possible contributors to the results observed for these two species. If M. oculata percentage cover declines linearly at the current rate (approximately 0.17% per year, if a constant decline in each of the four years), then by 2019, this species may be nearly absent from the Piddington Mound, which would have major effects on species' abundances, distributions, and biodiversity. Therefore, further research and continuous monitoring of the temporal change in biological composition within CWC reef/mound habitats are critical. Deep-sea coral ecosystems represent oases of life in the deep ocean, often hosting abundant and diverse faunal communities. Although mounting evidence indicates that deep-sea benthic communities are highly dynamic and can change over scales of a few hours to seasons or years, such dynamics have never been characterized in deep-sea coral ecosystems. We used a time-lapse camera deployed for a year at a depth of 1230 m on Sur Ridge (Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary) to characterize hourly changes in megafaunal abundance and diversity in a deep-sea coral assemblage. The response of community dynamics to variation in environmental factors, including surface net primary production as well as current speed/direction, temperature and acoustic backscatter (a proxy for particle and zooplankton density) at depth, was also evaluated. Overall, 33 taxa from 6 phyla, including multiple commercially valuable species, were observed throughout the study period. The strong seasonal pattern and periodicities in the occurrence of the most abundant taxa likely drove the observed temporal trends in overall abundance and diversity. Fluctuations in food availability may have, at least partially, driven these trends, as indicated by the significant relationship between community dynamics, surface net primary production and acoustic backscatter at depth. However, the low explanatory power of environmental parameters tested here suggest that biotic factors such as individual behaviors and species interactions had a strong influence on community dynamics. Scleractinian cold-water corals are found across the Northeast Atlantic, providing structure for important habitats that support high biodiversity. Climate-driven perturbations on parameters such as carbonate chemistry, oxygen, bottom currents, productivity and temperature have the potential to impact the abundance and diversity of these cold-water coral communities. One way to explore the linkage between corals and climate is to examine historic coral distributions during times of past climate change. Previous coral dating efforts in the Northeast Atlantic (n ∼ 700) have focused on reef-forming colonial coral communities from shelf and slope areas. However, there are far fewer data from open-ocean settings or from solitary coral species, thus precluding assessment of basin-wide controls on coral occurrence. Here, we contribute >600 new U-series ages for both solitary and colonial coral species from open-ocean sites including the Reykjanes Ridge and seamounts in the mid and low latitudes to map the changing distribution of Northeast Atlantic cold-water corals over the last 150,000 years. The temporal occurrences of solitary and colonial corals from our offshore sites are broadly similar to the distributions along the nearer-shore sites at the same latitudes. In the cold-temperate and high-latitude Northeast Atlantic, corals are most abundant during warm climate intervals, with the Reykjanes Ridge (60°N) representing the northernmost limit of corals in the Northeast Atlantic during Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5, MIS 3 and Bølling-Allerød. This biogeographical distribution expanded northwards to the Norwegian margin at the onset of the Holocene when the ice sheets retreated and modern-like oceanographic conditions were established. We interpret the abundance of corals at these northerly sites to be linked with increased food supply and favourable hydrological conditions. By contrast, coral sites south of 45°N are characterised by glacial and deglacial occurrences, with a marked decline during the Holocene. This distribution is also linked to food supply, potentially driven by shifts in dust fertilization and upwelling, in addition to changes in dissolved oxygen concentration and temperature. Together, these findings emphasize the links between climate, oceanic processes, and cold-water coral distribution, pointing to low food supply and low oxygen concentration as limiting factors for cold-water coral populations. Both parameters are changing in the modern ocean, with implications for future coral communities. Cold-water coral (CWC) reefs create hotspots of metabolic activity in the deep sea, in spite of the limited supply of fresh organic matter from the ocean surface (i.e. phytodetritus). We propose that 'dead' coral framework, which harbours diverse faunal and microbial communities, boosts the metabolic activity of the reefs, through enhanced resource retention and recycling. Analysis of a video transect across a 700-540 m-deep CWC mound (Rockall Bank, North-East Atlantic) revealed a high benthic cover of dead framework (64%). Box-cored fragments of dead framework were incubated on-board and showed oxygen consumption rates of 0.078–0.182 μmol O 2 (mmol organic carbon, i.e. OC)−1 h−1, indicating a substantial contribution to the total metabolic activity of the CWC reef. During the incubations, it was shown that the framework degradation stage influences nitrogen (re)cycling, corresponding to differences in community composition. New (less-degraded) framework released ammonium (0.005 ± 0.001 μmol NH 4 + (mmol OC)−1 h−1), probably due to the activity of ammonotelic macrofauna. In contrast, old (more-degraded) framework released nitrate (0.015 ± 0.008 μmol NO 3 − (mmol OC)−1 h−1), indicating that nitrifying microorganisms recycled fauna-excreted ammonium to nitrate. Furthermore, the framework community removed natural dissolved organic matter (DOM) from the incubation water (0.005–0.122 μmol C (mmol OC)−1 h−1). Additional feeding experiments showed that all functional groups and macrofauna taxa of the framework community incorporated 13C-enriched ('labelled') DOM, indicating widespread DOM uptake and recycling. Finally, the framework effectively retained 13C-enriched phytodetritus, (a) by physical retention on the biofilm-covered surface and (b) by biological filtration through suspension-feeding fauna. We therefore suggest that the dead framework acts as a 'filtration-recycling factory' that enhances the metabolic activity of CWC reefs. The exposed framework, however, is particularly vulnerable to ocean acidification, jeopardizing this important aspect of CWC reef functioning. Mesophotic coral reefs (~30–150 m) and deeper reefs (>150 m) represent some of the least explored and poorly documented habitats in our oceans. These deep ecosystems are both high in biodiversity and ecologically distinct from shallower reefs. They are also equally threatened by natural and anthropogenic factors. Thanks to advancements in remote undersea technologies, our access to and understanding of these poorly studied environments continues to expand. With current data now suggesting more stratified populations of reef fishes and a continuous yield of new species discovered in the mesophotic zone, now under global pressures of climate change and overfishing, the need to explore these ecosystems has never been greater. Most deep-sea (>200 m) biodiversity studies rely on dredging and trawling technologies that are not selective or targeted. Here we present on the design and field demonstration of a compact, low-cost, targeted reef fish sampling system intended for use on inspection-class ROVs in the mesophotic zone. During a research expedition to the Western Province of the Solomon Islands, the system successfully collected multiple novel fish species at depths ranging from 90 to 187 m. Cold-water coral and sponge (CWCS) communities are important indicators of vulnerable marine ecosystems (VMEs) and are used to delineate areas for marine conservation and fisheries management. Although the northeast Pacific region of Canada (NEPC) is notable for having unique CWCS assemblages and is the location of >80% of Canadian seamounts, the extent of potential CWCS-defined VMEs in this region is unknown. Here, we used a diverse set of environmental data layers (n=30) representing a range of bathymetric derivatives, physicochemical variables, and water column properties to assess the primary factors influencing the niche separation and potential distributions of six habitat-forming groups of CWCS in the NEPC (sponge classes: Hexactinellida, Demospongiae; coral orders: Alcyonacea, Scleractinia, Antipatharia, Pennatulacea). The primary environmental gradients that influence niche separation among CWCS are driven by total alkalinity, dissolved inorganic carbon, and dissolved oxygen. Significant niche separation among groups indicates CWCS to be primarily specialists occurring in rare habitat conditions in the NEPC. Species distribution models (SDMs) developed for each CWCS group shared severely low dissolved oxygen levels ([O 2 ] < 0.5 ml L−1) as a top predictor for habitat suitability in the NEPC. Niche separation is further emphasized by differences in the model-predicted areas of suitable habitat among CWCS groups. Although niches varied among taxa, the general areas of high habitat suitability for multiple CWCS groups in the NEPC occurred within the 500–1400 m bottom depth range which is strongly associated with the extensive oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) characterizing this region. As a result, the largest continuous area of potential CWCS habitat occurred along the continental slope with smaller, isolated patches also occurring at several offshore seamounts that have summits that extend into OMZ depths.
