The article discusses about various issues related to the U.S. security policy on China. This discussion shows that, from China's perspective, the key to improving the U.S.-China relations is not stressing common interests in reality, but stressing China's long-term goodwill. The most important issue in the U.S.-China security relations is Taiwan issue. When dealing with Taiwan issue, China should also take into account how to influence the U.S. concerns about gains. The U.S., therefore, might adopt a more co-operative policy on China.
The article presents introduction to the 2003 issue of the journal "Defense & Security Analysis." Articles in this edition focus on China and the special problems that confront both China and the United States over Taiwan, regional security in Asia and China's dependence on energy derived from oil, natural gas and nuclear power. China's power projection in Asia depends on her military power and the strength of her economy. Game theory plays a role in assessing various reactions of China to the U.S. defense of Taiwan and the Taiwan Strait and to the defense of other Asian allies of the United States.

The author discusses the United States' role in maintaining peace between China and Taiwan. China maintained that it plans to reunite the two countries as a matter of policy. The United States has led international efforts to maintain a separate government in Taiwan. The author questions future U.S. foreign policy after U.S. President George W. Bush leaves office.
