The paper provides an overview of the research conducted on various aspects of Information Literacy. Many studies have been conducted in India and abroad on different facets of Information Literacy and pinpointed that information literacy is an essential skill in the era of information explosion. This paper provides an outline of the research done on Information literacy all over the world. By analysing 104 studies on information literacy, the present study indicates that Information Literacy is an essential skill in the current society. The importance of libraries in imparting information literacy is also mentioned in many studies. The literacy training has to be started at the school level, and it should be included in the curricula. The review shows that the only solution to reduce the digital divide gap among the information-rich and information-poor citizens is information literacy. Many initiatives have been started in India to bridge this gap. Many organisations and Associations like UNESCO, IFLA, American Library Associations, Society of Colleges, National and University Libraries (SCONUL) have framed different standards and Information Literacy models for various types of information users.

The present paper has attempted to highlight published research in Library and Information Science discipline contributed by LIS researchers in India during the last four decades, 1980-2019. The secondary data for the study was extracted from Incites, a web based analytical tool, of Clarivate Analytics. The study has observed that there were 4304 publications by Indian authors, which received 17523 citations. It has spotlighted the research themes of the top 100 papers; having the highest numbers of citations. The study has analysed citations, publication avenues and authorship of all 4304 papers. Research themes of highly cited 100 research papers in the areas of applications of bibliometrics, knowledge management and information seeking behaviour on social media received 6110 citations. Bibliometrics/scientometrics/informetrics were the preferred research themes followed by information seeking behaviour and other areas.The study has also presented the analysis with respect to collaboration. The practice of solo research changed with authors collaborating in projects and producing papers. Percentage of co-authored articles grew from 5.61 per cent to 12.66 per cent in India. Journal impact, author impact, core journals and most productive authors in the discipline have also been studied.

The paper attempts to measure the global research output on information literacy (IL) on the basis of data retrieved from SCOPUS database during 1975 to 2019. The total output included 7070 record and 50584 citation. The average citation per paper was 7.15 per cent. Among the most significant sources titles used for the publication of IL research, Communication in Computer and Information Science was found to be leading journal with 380 papers. However, Journal of Academic Librarianship has been recorded for receiving highest citations (6.75 %) and highest (32) h-index. Pinto, M from Universidad de Granada has been observed as the most prolific author with 48 publication. Lloyed, A got maximum 1062 citation and the highest (17) h-index was calculated for him. Out of total output in the entire subject field, the subjects in the Social Sciences have been resulted for highest quantitative yield with h-index 170. With regard to the distribution by the types of documents, ‘Article’ seemed to be most preferred source over the rest. USA accounted for 46.94 per cent research output in total publications. Purdue University from United States and Queensland University of Technology ‘OUT’ from Australia have been most prominent institutions in terms of institutional output. 7070 documents produced 22353 keyword in which the phrase ‘information literacy’ dominated the remaining terms.

The present study is an attempt to understand the research attitude, engagement and competencies of LIS professionals in higher educational institutions in India. It was found that out of 170 respondents, 145 (85.3%) respondents read research literature regularly and 75 (44.1) expressed that reading research based articles is their regular activity. But 95 (55.9) do not read journal articles. 155 (91.2) respondents revealed that they have conducted research after obtaining the formal degree. Majority of respondents 47 (27.6) revealed that their preferred mode of dissemination of research has been publishing paper in conference proceedings, followed by publishing a paper in refereed journals 35 (20.6). Maximum respondents 72 (40.0) followed a theoretical approach in conducting research, followed by survey method 55 (30.6). 'E-resources' (160) and 'Bibliometric Study’ (120) has been the most preferred areas of research publishing. ‘Lack of funding support’ (160), ‘time constraints’ (155) and ‘Problems in data collection’ (150), have been identified as major constraints in carrying out research. The main purpose for conducting research is to find the academic performance indicators (APIs) 150, followed by personal growth (102). The study suggests that funding agencies and universities need to come forward to encourage LIS professionals to pursue research and publishing. This will add value in delivering the best library services to academic community and also improve research activities in academic institutions.

Embedded librarianship is an old concept in new context. It is an old phenomenon to initiate a new range of services in the present environment. This paper defines the attributes of embedded library services such as user-oriented, no physical proximity required, miniature group centric, expertise, etc. It also endows with suggestions to the future embedded librarians which embrace acting as a group and not as an individual, support from the organisation and associates, commercial outlook, risk taking competence, etc. This paper also explains the practicing embedded librarianship process which starts with the identification of a faculty member who is library-friendly and ends with providing with embedded library services in the hi-tech era. It is a transformation process of traditional librarian to embedded librarian. As compared to traditional librarianship which is based on transaction, embedded librarianship is based on relationship with the faculty, or user community. When an embedded librarian initiate interacting with the patrons, it takes them to the another level of understanding with the user. Librarianship with the help of IT has developed into a fruitful affiliation. Most of the high-flying libraries in India are providing embedded library services to its users, some of the libraries are Delhi University Library system, IIT Delhi, Indira Gandhi National Open University, etc. The success of embedded librarianship depends not only on the understanding of librarian and the faculty members but also on the support from the organisation.http://dx.doi.org/10.14429/djlit.34.6.7059

The presence of web 2.0 technologies virtually changes the dimension of the society in terms of accessing and using the information. The present paper attempts to identify the communication patterns in the context of Facebook adopted in the different universities and institutions in Asia. The paper showed a survey of 100 higher learning institutions based on the QS University Rankings: Asia 2013, regarding their presence in Facebook. The study reveals that most of the universities and institutions prefer to use social networking as one of the most effective way of communication. But there is less presence of library Facebook page of the respective universities. Thus, the universities may have official facebook page both for institute and its library and can embed with website and maintain with adequate information of the institute to reach broader groups of users. http://dx.doi.org/ 10.14429/djlit.34.5878

The paper emphasises the sense-making approach to the concept and practice of information literacy (IL). After discussing the meaning and purpose of IL, passing references are made to the IL standards, models, and rubrics. The information search process is emphasised in this paper. Nature and types of knowledge and learning have also been discussed. Expectations from INFLIBNET, vision of the National Knowledge Commission (NKC), and the UNESCO's Education for All, and Information for All Programmes have also been put into the context of IL. Finally, the paper suggests that IL programmes must be based upon the complexity and diversity of information communities, and cultural hegemony and intellectual imperialism should not be allowed to prevail. http://dx.doi.org/10.14429/djlit.28.2.161

This paper highlights the comparison of information literacy skills among the master’s students of social sciences departments of Mizoram University (MZU) and Tezpur University (TZU). The primary data collected by using survey method and a structured 595 questionnaires were distributed among the respondents in which 522 (87.73 %) of questionnaires were received. The majority of the respondents were female in both the universities in compared to male respondents. Mizoram Universty students have more awareness of using library services in comparison to Tezpur University respondents. It has been also found that there is no significant difference in the information literacy skills of the students of both the Universities. Mizoram University students preferred ‘author-wise’ i.e. (59.32 %) search while Tezpur University students preferred ‘title-wise’ i.e. (39.38 %) search technique for searching the information. It has been also found that a maximum respondents of both universities i.e. (MZU, 55.97 %) and (TZU, 54.75 %) preferred the simple keyword search technique to search the electronic information. The maximum students of both universities were preferred print media for fulfil their needed information. In both of the Universities’ respondents were aware with fair use of information and plagiarism with 79.09 per cent of students at MZU and 84.5 per cent of students at TZU. The maximum 39.16 per cent of students were mostly given the references at MZU while in TZU, a large number 57.53 per cent of students were always giving references when they reproduce other work or ideas. Media and Information Literacy (MIL) emphasises a critical approach to literacy to enables people to question critically what they have read, heard and learned. It is requireed in all levels of education and more so to reserach scholars. The aim of the study is to find the awareness and use of MIL tools by research scholars of Pondicherry University. The objectives are: a) to identify the level of awareness in MIL among research scholars; b) to assess the usefulness and relevance of MIL among research scholars; c) to identify the training needs of research scholars in MIL; d) to determine the problems faced by the researches scholars of Pondicherry University while using MIL tools; and e) to suggest the best methods of delivering MIL training to the research scholars of Pondicherry University. The survey method and quesionanire tool are used in conducting this study. Of the total 13 schools, due to time limiation research scholars working in 10 schools were taken as sample. A majority of the respondents are aware of the term MIL and that enables them to save time. Most of the respondents use journals/papers followed by internet for conducting research. The majority (75.49 %) of them preferred 1-2 weeks of workshop-based training on MIL. MIL syllabus may cover media literacy (75.49 %), information literacy (86.27 %), computer literacy (77.45 %), digital literacy (54.9 %), literary literacy (71.57 %), and news literacy (73.53 %). A majority (62.74 %) of the scholars do not know on MIL initiatives in India. Therefore, UGC may have to take necessary steps in implementing the same.

The main aim of this paper is to explore home libraries’ involvement in social changes in the rural area of Kepek, Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta. These home libraries mainly work as a collection provider at every house managed by a reading centre known as TBM (Community Reading Garden). This research used conceptual frameworks of social changes based on Ogburn and Bourdieu. Qualitative method was used to collect data using observation, interview, and documentation. The collected data was analysed through Miles and Huberman model including display, reduction, and conclusion/verification. The findings show that social changes occur through four phases, namely invention/discovery, diffusion, accumulation, and adaptation. These changes also found dynamic contestation between agency and structure in the home library program. The contestation creates dynamics in education and economy among actors in Kepek communities.

The terminology on plagiarism is not hard and fast. It is fluid, a bit ambiguous, and still emerging. It may take some time to settle the terms more clearly, concretely and exhaustively. This paper aims to provide a terminological discussion of some important and current concepts related to plagiarism. It discusses key terms/concepts such as copyright, citation cartels, citing vs. quoting, compulsive thief, cryptomnesia, data fakery, ignorance of laws and codes of ethics, information literacy, lack of training, misattribution, fair use clause, paraphrasing, plagiarism, plagiarism detection software, publish or perish syndrome, PubPeer, retraction, retraction vs. correction, retraction watch, salami publication, similarity score, Society for Scientific Values, and source attribution. The explanation and definition of these terms/concepts can be useful for LIS scholars and professionals in their efforts to fight plagiarism. We expect this terminology can be referred in future discussions on the topic and also used to improve the communications between the actors involved.

The present article is a review of information literacy (IL) outlook in the present academic perspective. The conceptual evolvement of the concept IL stands for wide attention it has got by the theorists. The paper discusses as how from the traditional bibliographical instruction, it has been advanced as a tool for library and information professionals to streamline the profession and their position. Although the term exist with different tags, it’s worth and performance has been considered more essential than the nomenclature. While being an integral part of formal education system, library professionals have to play dominant role in imparting informal education also. Yet the expected outcome of IL can only be achieved with the collaborative endeavor of library professionals and teaching staff. The existing models of information literacy instruction (ILI) have also been highlighted along with brief overview of information literacy content. Since IL is the basic pre-requisite of lifelong learning, the article exhorts international, national and local governments should have information policies and strategies with emphasis on assessment. ILIAC model developed by Oakleaf is noteworthy in this respect. Library professionals are predictable to play a key role in extending cognitive abilities of the users to make IL to be a great success. As such a brief review of their expected role is undertaken.

The paper aims to discuss the results obtained through a survey conducted at Sit Dorabji Tata Memorial Library (SDTM Library), Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai in order to understand the perception of students, staff and faculty members of TISS about the library and its services. The SDTM Library is one of the very reputed libraries in the field of social sciences in India. It hosts a large number of collection both in print and non-print formats related to social scince and associated desciplines. It has designed and implemented its own Digital Repository; created and implemented 24X7 Cyber Library and has established a state of the art Computer Lab for the People with Visual Impairment. In short, the library has made available all those facilities and services to its patrons to enable them take their academic endevours to new heights. The resluts obtained from the study validate the above mentioned claims and at the same time point out some areas that need improvement.

Traditional knowledge is an important element of the intellectual and cultural heritage of indigenous peoples.It reflects their social and historical identity and significantly contributes to the future well-being and sustainabledevelopment.
