Abstract: The serine/threonine protein kinase Akt, also known as protein kinase B (PKB), plays a highly conserved role in the regulation of cellular energy metabolism. Akt is also one of the most frequently activated protein kinases in human cancers, and therefore, represents an attractive potential target for therapeutic intervention. This review will address the possibility that the cancer-promoting activity of Akt is mediated through effects on energy homeostasis that can be specifically targeted to treat cancer.
