This paper describes the instrumentation and the first results of an upper atmospheric observing project conducted in New Zealand. We operate an all-sky aurora camera and a 64-Hz sampling induction magnetometer at Middlemarch, as well as 1-Hz sampling fluxgate magnetometers which have been operative at three stations in New Zealand, Middlemarch, Eyrewell and Te Wharau. Green and red auroras corresponding to the 557.7 nm and 630.0 nm emissions, respectively, were observed on the night of 5 August 2019. Pc1 pulsations were observed in the frequency range of ~ 0.2–1 Hz before and after a small (minimum Dst = − 40 nT) geomagnetic storm during 4–6 October 2020. Before the geomagnetic storm, Pc1 pulsations with several center frequencies were observed regardless of local time. During the recovery phase, an IPDP (interval of pulsations of diminishing period) type of Pc1 and four subsequent intervals of Pc1s were detected. The Ionospheric Alfvén Resonator (IAR) was also identified with spectral resonance structures during this magnetic storm. Lower harmonic modes of the IAR were present throughout the local nighttime, but higher harmonic modes with frequency of 5–15 Hz seemed to disappear at the onset time of substorms. This is the first report of the IAR at such a high frequency range and this is the first IAR observation in the southern hemisphere. Spectral Resonance Structures (SRS) of Ionospheric Alfven Resonator (IAR) are investigated by analysing the magnetic field data of a high sampling frequency induction coil magnetometer, installed at a low latitude Indian station, Shillong (25. 56 ∘ N , 91. 86 ∘ E , d i p o l e L = 1.08) . One of the distinguishing features of IAR resonance structure observed at this latitude is the excitation of two spectral resonance structures simultaneously, one with a small frequency separation and the other with a large frequency separation of subsequent harmonics. The seasonal variation shows that the occurrence of double SRS is more favoured during winter, where, out of the total IAR events observed during winter, about 47 % show clear signatures of double SRS and no double SRS are observed during summer. We have examined the altitudinal variation of refractive index using IRI 2016 model to understand the role of local ionospheric conditions in the formation of double spectral resonance structures. Our study reveals that the excitation of double SRS is related to the E-region to F-region variability of refractive index of the ionosphere. We also report that the double spectral resonance structures at Shillong are always observed only in the B x component of the magnetic field variation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report the propagation of substorm-associated magnetic fluctuations by multipoint magnetic observations from ground and space in the same meridional plane. The first Quasi-Zenith Satellite (QZS-1), which has a unique orbit of quasi-zenith orbit with an inclination of 41 ∘ , an apogee of 7.1 R E radial distance, and an orbital period of 24 h, can stay for a long time in the near-earth magnetotail away from the magnetic equator. We examined a substorm event during 15:00–16:00 UT on July 09, 2013 when QZS-1 was located at 31 ∘ dipole latitude and 23.5 h dipole magnetic local time. The Engineering Test Satellite VIII (ETS-VIII), Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms D (THEMIS-D) at a radial distance of ∼ 10 R E , and THEMIS-E at a radial distance of ∼ 7 R E were located near the equator in the similar magnetic meridian. The dipolarization was first observed at THEMIS-D at 15:14:30 UT. Then, ∼ 1 min later, magnetic fluctuations were observed by ETS-VIII and THEMIS-E. At the same time, the magnetic bay and Pi2 pulsation were observed at low-latitude magnetic observatories and the Radiation Belt Storm Probes B satellite in the inner magnetosphere. We found that QZS-1 away from the equator observed a strong azimuthal magnetic field fluctuation with a long delay of 15 min from the first dipolarization at THEMIS-D near the equator. The speed of the poleward propagating magnetic fluctuation between the ionospheric footprints is calculated to be 310 m / s , which is consistent with a typical speed of auroral poleward expansion. A similar time delay of the onset of the negative bay was observed between the Tixie (AACGM MLAT = 66. 8 ∘ ) and Kotelny (AACGM MLAT = 71. 0 ∘ ) observatories near the ionospheric footprint of satellites. We suggest that the long delay time of the magnetic fluctuation at QZS-1 was associated with the crossing of field-aligned current during the poleward expansion of the substorm current system. The distribution of azimuthal magnetic field variations in the magnetosphere indicates that the east side downward current extended more west side in the higher latitude part of the current wedge. The plasmas (electrons and ions) in the inner magnetosphere have wide energy ranges from electron volts to mega-electron volts (MeV). These plasmas rotate around the Earth longitudinally due to the gradient and curvature of the geomagnetic field and by the co-rotation motion with timescales from several tens of hours to less than 10 min. They interact with plasma waves at frequencies of mHz to kHz mainly in the equatorial plane of the magnetosphere, obtain energies up to MeV, and are lost into the ionosphere. In order to provide the global distribution and quantitative evaluation of the dynamical variation of these plasmas and waves in the inner magnetosphere, the PWING project (study of dynamical variation of particles and waves in the inner magnetosphere using ground-based network observations, ) has been carried out since April 2016. This paper describes the stations and instrumentation of the PWING project. We operate all-sky airglow/aurora imagers, 64-Hz sampling induction magnetometers, 40-kHz sampling loop antennas, and 64-Hz sampling riometers at eight stations at subauroral latitudes (~ 60° geomagnetic latitude) in the northern hemisphere, as well as 100-Hz sampling EMCCD cameras at three stations. These stations are distributed longitudinally in Canada, Iceland, Finland, Russia, and Alaska to obtain the longitudinal distribution of plasmas and waves in the inner magnetosphere. This PWING longitudinal network has been developed as a part of the ERG (Arase)-ground coordinated observation network. The ERG (Arase) satellite was launched on December 20, 2016, and has been in full operation since March 2017. We will combine these ground network observations with the ERG (Arase) satellite and global modeling studies. These comprehensive datasets will contribute to the investigation of dynamical variation of particles and waves in the inner magnetosphere, which is one of the most important research topics in recent space physics, and the outcome of our research will improve safe and secure use of geospace around the Earth. An introduction is presented in which the editors discuss articles in the issue on topics including the use of solar wind data, the examination of optical imaging data during substorms and the medium frequency burst.

Solar wind particles and ionospheric O+ ions influence the near-Earth plasma sheet and inner magnetospheric composition. We studied the behavior of H+, O+ and He+ ions (9-210 keV) for intense and moderate geomagnetic storms of solar cycle 23 and 24. An average energy density < ε > of ions over a given interval and flux enhancement is estimated using observations from satellites at different L values, namely STICS sensor on-board Geotail spacecraft and HOPE spectrometer on-board Radiation Belt Storm Probes. It provides a comprehensive understanding of the energy density variation of H+, O+ and He+ ions with the strength of IMF Bz, Psw, intensity of storms and L value. Statistically, we observed that (1) In the plasma sheet region, during main phase of the intense geomagnetic storm, < εO+/H+ > and < εHe+/H+ > enhances, (2) < εO+/H+ > is well correlated with Psw (CC = 0.86) and IMF Bz (CC = 0.85), (3) < εO+/H+ > shows higher correlation (CC = 0.73) with Kp than < εHe+/H+ > (CC = 0.65), indicating a fairly good dependence on the strength of geomagnetic activity, (4) < εO+/H+ > and < εHe+/H+ > dependence on L value indicates that O+/H+ and He+/H+ is more pronounced near L = 3. It is a cumulative extension of the previous studies on ion composition change which is in accordance with the existing picture of the plasma sheet and inner magnetosphere. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Substorm onset has originally been defined as a longitudinally extended sudden auroral brightening (Akasofu initial brightening: AIB) followed a few minutes later by an auroral poleward expansion in ground-based all-sky images (ASIs). In contrast, such clearly marked two-stage development has not been evident in satellite-based global images (GIs). Instead, substorm onsets have been identified as localized sudden brightenings that expand immediately poleward. To resolve these differences, optical substorm onset signatures in GIs and ASIs are compared in this study for a substorm that occurred on December 7, 1999. For this substorm, the Polar satellite ultraviolet global imager was operated with a fixed-filter (170 nm) mode, enabling a higher time resolution (37 s) than usual to resolve the possible two-stage development. These data were compared with 20-s resolution green-line (557.7 nm) ASIs at Muonio in Finland. The ASIs revealed the AIB at 2124:50 UT and the subsequent poleward expansion at 2127:50 UT, whereas the GIs revealed only an onset brightening that started at 2127:49 UT. Thus, the onset in the GIs was delayed relative to the AIB and in fact agreed with the poleward expansion in the ASIs. The fact that the AIB was not evident in the GIs may be attributed to the limited spatial resolution of GIs for thin auroral arc brightenings.
