Very long oceanic transform faults do not just offset mid-oceanic ridges by hundreds of kilometers, but they also induce variations in the lithospheric structure and affect mantle melting, and hence the crustal accretion at the ridge-transform intersection (RTI). However, the deep structure of large offset RTIs remains unknown. Here, we present three-dimensional seismic tomography results (P- and S-wave velocities, Vp, Vs) in the vicinity of the eastern Romanche transform and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge in the equatorial Atlantic Ocean, using arrival times from microearthquakes recorded by a recent temporary array of seafloor seismometers. We find that normal to low Vp/Vs ratios (∼1.7) are observed at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, representing weak serpentinization and the dominant magmatic processes, whereas high Vp/Vs ratios (∼1.8-1.95) are observed west of the RTI, at the eastern termination of the 2016 M w 7.1 earthquake. However, unusually low Vp/Vs ratios (∼1.6-1.7) are observed at 0-15 km depth and in the region of the 2016 M w 7.1 earthquake rupture zone. We suggest that the unusually low Vp/Vs ratios result from the presence of thick cracks at shallow depths (0-8 km) and/or the enrichment of orthopyroxene in the deep mantle (8-15 km). • 3-D Vp and Vs models for the Romanche eastern ridge-transform intersection. • Low Vp/Vs ratios (∼1.6-1.7) at depths of <15 km along the transform are observed. • The low ratios may be due to thick cracks and/or orthopyroxene enrichment. Abstract The 2013 Craig, Alaska M W 7.5 earthquake ruptured along ∼150 km of the Queen Charlotte Fault (QCF), a right-lateral strike-slip plate boundary fault separating the Pacific and North American plates. Regional shear wave analyses suggest that the Craig earthquake rupture propagated in the northward direction faster than the S-wave (supershear). Theoretical studies suggest that a bimaterial interface, such as that along the QCF, which separates oceanic and continental crust with differing elastic properties, can promote supershear rupture propagation. We deployed short-period ocean-bottom seismometers (OBS) as a part of a rapid-response effort less than four months after the Craig earthquake mainshock. During a 21-day period, 1,133 aftershocks were recorded by 8 OBS instruments. Aftershock spatial distribution indicates that the base of the seismogenic zone along the QCF approaches ∼25 km depth, consistent with a thermally-controlled fault rheology expected for igneous rocks at oceanic transform faults. The spatial distribution also provides supporting evidence for a previously hypothesized active strand of the QCF system within the Pacific Plate. Tomographic traveltime inversion for velocity structure indicates a low-velocity (V P and V S) zone on the Pacific side of the plate boundary at 5–20 km depths, where Neogene Pacific crust and upper mantle seismic velocities average ∼3–11% slower than the North American side, where the Paleozoic North American crust is seismically faster. Our results suggest that elastic properties along the studied portion of the QCF are different than those of a simple oceanic–continental plate boundary fault. In our study region, velocity structure across the QCF, while bimaterial, does not support faster material on the west side of the fault, which has been proposed as one possible explanation for northward supershear propagation during the Craig earthquake. Instead, we image low-velocity material on the west side of the fault. Explanations could include that part of the rupture was subshear, or that fault damage zone properties or fault smoothness are more important controls on supershear rupture than a bimaterial contrast. Abstract The M w = 8.8 Maule Earthquake of February 27, 2010, remotely triggered minor surface displacement along the Atacama Fault System in Northern Chile located 1500–1800 km from the epicenter. Here we present evidence that surface displacement events recorded by the IPOC (Integrated Plate Boundary Observatory in N-Chile) Creepmeter Array are related to earthquakes on the underlying subduction zone interface or to large earthquakes around the world. Our observations document dynamic triggering of shallow slip on faults in a forearc setting. Continuous monitoring revealed that up to 30 displacement events per year occur on the monitored fault segments, >90% of them triggered by earthquakes in the near or far field synchronous to the passage of the seismic wave. We can clearly attribute far field triggering to the passage of the surface wave and near field triggering to the passage of the body wave. The most distant triggered displacement event monitored occurred after the 2011, M w = 9.0 Tohoku-Oki Earthquake located 16 468 km away following the passage of large amplitude SS waves. Comparing the triggered displacement events with other triggered phenomena like seismicity, volcanic eruptions, hydrological changes as well as with data from the California Creepmeter Array we find that the seismic energy density appropriately describes a magnitude–distance scaling relationship of slip triggering. We present SKS splitting measurements in the Western Indian Ocean, recorded on 20 land and 57 seafloor seismometers deployed by the RHUM-RUM experiment (Réunion Hotspot and Upper Mantle – Réunions Unterer Mantel). We discuss our splitting observations within their geodynamic settings and compare them to SKS splitting parameters predicted from an azimuthally anisotropic Rayleigh wave tomography model that includes the RHUM-RUM data. We find that anisotropic directions poorly correlate with the present-day motion of the Somali plate, which at <2.6 cm/yr may be too slow to cause strongly sheared fabric in the asthenosphere. Fast split directions ( Φ ) between La Réunion and the Central Indian Ridge (CIR) trend E–W and provide strong, first seismological evidence for near-horizontal flow in the asthenosphere that connects the Réunion mantle upwelling with the CIR, supporting a long-standing hypothesis on plume–ridge interaction. In the vicinity of the Réunion hotspot, we observe a seismic anisotropy pattern indicative of a parabolic asthenospheric flow controlled by the Réunion mantle upwelling and its consecutive asthenospheric spreading. We furthermore observe ridge-normal Φ along the CIR and ridge-parallel Φ along the Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR), both mainly attributed to asthenospheric mantle flows. In the Mozambique Channel between East-Africa and Madagascar, we attribute E–W trending Φ to frozen lithospheric structures, recording the paleo-orientation of the spreading ridges that enabled Madagascar's separation away from Africa. Based on the synopsis of this and previous SKS splitting studies at mid-ocean ridges, we propose that ridge-normal Φ may develop at fast and intermediate spreading ridges (e.g., CIR and East Pacific Rise) and ridge-parallel Φ could be characteristic to slow spreading ridges (e.g., SWIR, Mid-Atlantic Ridge and the paleo-ridges in the Mozambique Channel). At mid-ocean-ridge spreading centers, the separation of lithospheric plates induces upwelling and pressure-release melting in the upper mantle. Many questions remain about the associated flow pattern, melt distribution, and the interaction of spreading centers with hotspots. Based on the propagation of Rayleigh waves across arrays of ocean-bottom seismometers, we present shear wave attenuation and velocity models in the vicinity of the Juan de Fuca plate with the best resolution to date of any spreading center. There is strong attenuation centered at depths of 70–80 km, just below the expected dry solidus. The top of the attenuating region is somewhat deeper than predicted for the thermal effects of passive mantle upwelling beneath the spreading center. The shear velocity structure shows the lowest velocities west of the spreading center, particularly near Axial Seamount and high velocities east of the axis extending to a greater depth than predicted by the passive flow model. Together, these observations support a model in which buoyant upwelling and melt extraction west of the spreading center first depletes and dehydrates the mantle above the dry solidus and then the associated downwelling carries depleted, melt-free, residual mantle downward beneath the Juan de Fuca plate. Deep-sea sediments record the geological and climate history of the Earth. The seismic properties of these sediments, namely the P- and S-wave velocities, depend on their chemical compositions, grain size, age and depth of burial, which, in turn, influence the porosity. We use multichannel seismic reflection data to estimate the sediment thickness and P-wave velocity over 4-74 Ma old oceanic crust on the African Plate and 3-27 Ma old crust on the South American Plate in the equatorial Atlantic Region. We then use the P-to-S converted waves from the basement-sediment interface recorded by 69 multi-component ocean bottom seismometers to determine the P- and S-wave velocity ratios ( V P V S ) over 3 to 74 Ma. We find that the V P V S decreases from 8.9 ± 2.0 at 3 Ma to 5.0 ± 1.0 at 17 Ma but abruptly increases to 19.5 ± 2.8 at 37.5 Ma. Then, it gradually decreases for crustal ages >37 Ma, reaching 7.0 ± 0.3 at 74 Ma. These variations are almost symmetric across the Mid-Atlantic Ridge over 4-27 Ma, suggesting a relation to climate change rather than regional effects. We estimate the average sediment porosity using the V P V S and find that the average porosity decreases from 89.2 ± 1.5% at 37.5 Ma to 69.9 ± 1.2% at 74 Ma, possibly associated with accumulation of terrigenous input from Africa. Between 4 and 37 Ma, the porosity fluctuates between 70% and 85%. Such a fluctuation correlates well with the decrease in the global atmospheric CO 2 from 800 ppm to 400 ppm during the Oligocene and with carbonate compensation depth, which are possibly related to fauna/flora diversification and calcareous sediment accumulation. The variation in porosity at 23 and 17 Ma also appears to be linked with major climate shifts, suggesting that sediment porosity could be used to shed light on the past climate and fauna/flora characterization. • We use seismic data to characterize sediment porosity in the equatorial Atlantic. • Porosity has anomalous and symmetric trend across the MidAtlantic Ridge. • We show that in deep-sea environments, climate affects the sediment porosity. • Our porosity results correlate with the climate history of the Oligocene and Miocene. The Turkana Depression in Eastern Africa separates the elevated plateaus of East Africa to the south and Ethiopia-Yemen to the north. It remains unclear whether the Depression lacks dynamic mantle support, or if the entire East Africa region is dynamically supported and the Depression compensated isostatically by thinned crust. Also poorly understood is how Miocene-Recent extension has developed across the Depression, connecting spatially separated magmatic rift zones in Ethiopia and Kenya. Receiver function analysis is used to constrain Moho depth and bulk-crustal V P / V S ratio below new seismograph networks in the Depression, and on the northern Tanzania craton. Crustal thickness is ∼40 km below northern Uganda and 30–35 km below southern Ethiopia, but 20–30 km below most of the Depression, where mass-balance calculations reveal low elevations can be explained adequately by crustal thinning alone. Despite the fact that magmatism has occurred for 45 Ma across the Depression, more than 15 Ma before East African Rift (EAR) extension initiated, bulk crustal V P / V S across southern Ethiopia and the Turkana Depression (∼1.74) is similar to that observed in areas unaffected by Cenozoic rifting and magmatism. Evidence for voluminous lower crustal intrusions and/or melt, widespread below the Ethiopian rift and Ethiopian plateau to the north, is therefore lacking. These observations, when reviewed in light of high stretching factors (β ≤ 2.11), suggest Cenozoic extension has been dominated until recently by faulting and plate stretching, rather than magma intrusion, which is likely an incipient process, operating directly below seismically-active Lake Turkana. Early-stage EAR basins to the west of Lake Turkana, with associated stretching factors of β ≈ 2 , formed in crust only moderately thinned during earlier rifting episodes. Conversely, ∼23 km-thick crust beneath the Kino Sogo Fault Belt (KSFB) has small offset faults and thin sedimentary strata, suggesting almost all of the observed stretching occurred in Mesozoic times. Despite the KSFB marking the shortest path between focused extensional zones to the north and south, seismicity and GPS data show that modern extension is localized below Lake Turkana to the west. Characterising the seismicity associated with slow deformation in the vicinity of the Alpine Fault may provide constraints on the stresses acting on a major transpressive margin prior to an anticipated great (≥M8) earthquake. Here, we use recently detected tremor and low-frequency earthquakes (LFEs) to examine how slow tectonic deformation is loading the Alpine Fault late in its typical ∼300-yr seismic cycle. We analyse a continuous seismic dataset recorded between 2009 and 2016 using a network of 10–13 short-period seismometers, the Southern Alps Microearthquake Borehole Array. Fourteen primary LFE templates are used in an iterative matched-filter and stacking routine, allowing the detection of similar signals corresponding to LFE families sharing common locations. This yields an 8-yr catalogue containing 10,000 LFEs that are combined for each of the 14 LFE families using phase-weighted stacking to produce signals with the highest possible signal-to-noise ratios. We show that LFEs occur almost continuously during the 8-yr study period and highlight two types of LFE distributions: (1) discrete behaviour with an inter-event time exceeding 2 min; (2) burst-like behaviour with an inter-event time below 2 min. We interpret the discrete events as small-scale frequent deformation on the deep extent of the Alpine Fault and LFE bursts (corresponding in most cases to known episodes of tremor or large regional earthquakes) as brief periods of increased slip activity indicative of slow slip. We compute improved non-linear earthquake locations using a 3-D velocity model. LFEs occur below the seismogenic zone at depths of 17–42 km, on or near the hypothesised deep extent of the Alpine Fault. The first estimates of LFE focal mechanisms associated with continental faulting, in conjunction with recurrence intervals, are consistent with quasi-continuous shear faulting on the deep extent of the Alpine Fault. We investigated the distribution of very low frequency earthquakes (VLFEs) that occurred in the shallow accretionary prism of the eastern Nankai trough during one week of VLFE activity in October 2015. They were recorded very close from the sources by an array of broadband ocean bottom seismometers (BBOBSs) equipped in Dense Oceanfloor Network system for Earthquakes and Tsunamis 1 (DONET1). The locations of VLFEs estimated using a conventional envelope correlation method appeared to have a large scatter, likely due to effects of 3D structures near the seafloor and/or sources that the method could not handle properly. Therefore, we assessed their relative locations by introducing a hierarchal clustering analysis based on patterns of relative peak times of envelopes within the array measured for each VLFE. The results suggest that, in the northeastern side of the network, all the detected VLFEs occur 30–40 km landward of the trench axis, near the intersection of a splay fault with the seafloor. Some likely occurred along the splay fault. On the other hand, many VLFEs occur closer to the trench axis in the southwestern side, likely along the plate boundary, and the VLFE activity in the shallow splay fault appears less intense, compared to the northeastern side. Although this could be a snap-shot of activity that becomes more uniform over longer-term, the obtained distribution can be reasonably explained by the change in shear stresses and pore pressures caused by a subducting-ridge below the northeastern side of DONET1. The change in stress state along the strike of the plate boundary, inferred from the obtained VLFE distribution, should be an important indicator of the strain release pattern and localised variations in the tsunamigenic potential of this region. An east–west trending, high-density seismic array was deployed along the eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau to investigate its eastward expansion. The 160 km long array spans the Ruoergai basin, Minjiang fault, Minshan Mountains, Tazang fault, and West Qinling. The array included 330 short-period seismographs spaced at 500 m intervals, which recorded teleseismic 3-component waveforms over a one month period. P-wave receiver functions calculated from 35 teleseismic events provided an image of crustal structure. The results show a massive thrust nappe structure around the Minshan Mountains and beneath the Minjiang fault. We suggest that this nappe formed after the closure of the Paleo-Tethyan ocean. The resultant Triassic thrusting contributed to partial uplift of the eastern Ruoergai basin and the Minshan Mountains in middle-to-late Miocene time. Receiver function images show that the Tazang fault is a crustal-scale rupture cutting across the Moho. The western Tazang fault appears as a nearly vertical strike-slip fault accommodating left lateral shear at the terminus of the eastern Kunlun fault. After clockwise rotation from an approximate east–west orientation to a nearly north–south orientation, the eastern Tazang fault became a west-dipping thrust fault, which caused crustal thickening beneath the Minshan Mountains and the West Qinling. Our results suggest that late Cenozoic uplift of the eastern margin of the plateau is produced by eastward overthrusting and crustal shortening, processes that absorbed slip along the Tazang and Kunlun faults. Extension at slow- and intermediate-spreading mid-ocean ridges is commonly accommodated through slip on long-lived faults called oceanic detachments. These curved, convex-upward faults consist of a steeply-dipping section thought to be rooted in the lower crust or upper mantle which rotates to progressively shallower dip-angles at shallower depths. The commonly-observed result is a domed, sub-horizontal oceanic core complex at the seabed. Although it is accepted that detachment faults can accumulate kilometre-scale offsets over millions of years, the mechanism of slip, and their capacity to sustain the shear stresses necessary to produce large earthquakes, remains subject to debate. Here we present a comprehensive seismological study of an active oceanic detachment fault system on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge near 13°20′N, combining the results from a local ocean-bottom seismograph deployment with waveform inversion of a series of larger teleseismically-observed earthquakes. The unique coincidence of these two datasets provides a comprehensive definition of rupture on the fault, from the uppermost mantle to the seabed. Our results demonstrate that although slip on the deep, steeply-dipping portion of detachment faults is accommodated by failure in numerous microearthquakes, the shallow, gently-dipping section of the fault within the upper few kilometres is relatively strong, and is capable of producing large-magnitude earthquakes. This result brings into question the current paradigm that the shallow sections of oceanic detachment faults are dominated by low-friction mineralogies and therefore slip aseismically, but is consistent with observations from continental detachment faults. Slip on the shallow portion of active detachment faults at relatively low angles may therefore account for many more large-magnitude earthquakes at mid-ocean ridges than previously thought, and suggests that the lithospheric strength at slow-spreading mid-ocean ridges may be concentrated at shallow depths. Mass-balancing voltages from four buried broadband seismometers connected to the NEPTUNE Canada seafloor cable are being recorded at 24-bit resolution. Sites are located on the Vancouver Island continental shelf, the nearby Cascadia accretionary prism, the eastern flank of the Juan de Fuca Ridge, and the western flank close to the Juan de Fuca Ridge axis. Tidal variations are present throughout the records. Variations in vertical acceleration at three of the sites match predicted gravitational attraction variations very well; those at the fourth site show a small residual that is probably caused by sensitivity to tilt resulting from sensor inclination. Horizontal accelerations, which at tidal periods are sensitive primarily to tilt, are anomalously large relative to standard-earth model results. After removal of predicted tidal body and ocean attraction and loading terms, the residuals are seen to follow ocean pressure variations. Responses range from 0.4 μrad dbar −1 (0.04 μrad kPa −1 ) at 10° true (down under positive load) at the continental shelf site, to 0.6 μrad dbar −1 at 243° at the Cascadia prism, 0.4 μrad dbar −1 at 90° at the eastern Juan de Fuca Ridge flank, and 0.2 μrad dbar −1 at 116° true on the western ridge flank. Except at the continental shelf site, tilts are roughly perpendicular to structural strike. The tilt observations can be explained by loading-induced deformation in the presence of local lithologic gradients or by the influence of faults or structurally controlled anisotropic elastic properties. The active volcanic island Tristan da Cunha, located at the southwestern and youngest end of the Walvis Ridge – Tristan/Gough hotspot track, is believed to be the surface expression of a huge thermal mantle anomaly. While several criteria for the diagnosis of a classical hotspot track are met, the Tristan region also shows some peculiarities. Consequently, it is vigorously debated if the active volcanism in this region is the expression of a deep mantle plume, or if it is caused by shallow plate tectonics and the interaction with the nearby Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Because of a lack of geophysical data in the study area, no model or assumption has been completely confirmed. We present the first amphibian P-wave finite-frequency travel time tomography of the Tristan da Cunha region, based on cross-correlated travel time residuals of teleseismic earthquakes recorded by 24 ocean-bottom seismometers. The data can be used to image a low velocity structure southwest of the island. The feature is cylindrical with a radius of ∼100 km down to a depth of 250 km. We relate this structure to the origin of Tristan da Cunha and name it the Tristan conduit. Below 250 km the low velocity structure ramifies into narrow veins, each with a radius of ∼50 km. The Alpine Fault is inferred on paleoseismological grounds to produce magnitude 8 earthquakes approximately every 330 yrs and to have last ruptured almost 300 yrs ago in 1717 AD. Despite approximately 90% of its typical interseismic period having elapsed since the last major earthquake, the Alpine Fault exhibits little present-day microseismicity and no geodetic evidence for shallow creep. Determining the mechanical state of the fault ahead of a future earthquake is a key objective of several studies, including the Deep Fault Drilling Project (DFDP). Here we use a network of borehole seismometers installed in conjunction with DFDP to detect and characterise low-magnitude seismicity adjacent to the central section of the Alpine Fault. We employ matched-filter detection techniques, automated cross-correlation phase picking, and singular value decomposition-derived magnitude estimation to construct a high-precision catalogue of 283 earthquakes within 5 km of the fault trace in an otherwise seismically quiet zone. The newly recognised seismicity occurs in non-repeating, spatially and temporally limited sequences, similar to sequences previously documented using standard methods but at significantly lower magnitudes of M L < 1.8 . These earthquakes are not clustered on a single distinctive structure, and we infer that they are distributed throughout a highly fractured zone surrounding the Alpine Fault. Focal mechanisms computed for 13 earthquakes using manual polarity picks exhibit predominantly strike-slip faulting, consistent with focal mechanisms observed further from the fault. Subduction zones produce earthquakes on a set of faults that operate under a wide variety of conditions resulting from considerable variations in depth, temperature, rock type, and fluid pressure. These variations likely lead to variation in the stress levels that drives particular earthquakes and that in turn effects the magnitude of seismic shaking they produce. In the Mendocino Triple Junction (MTJ) region, intraplate faults within the mantle of the subducting plate fail regularly in energetic earthquakes while the adjacent thrust interface of the Cascadia subduction zone remains seismically quiet despite the likelihood that it operates at much lower levels of stress and strength. In 2012, as part of the Cascadia Initiative community experiment, an ocean bottom seismometer (OBS) array was deployed in the MTJ area, providing unusually dense data covering both the inter- and intra-plate earthquakes. Combining these data with onshore networks, we detect and relocate 1137 earthquakes with a three dimensional velocity model. We perform detailed spectral and time domain analysis to study variations in earthquake source properties between the different types of faults. We observe a wide variability of stress drops and systematic lateral and depth variations in the earthquake source spectra resulting from the different types of tectonic fault systems in this region: intraplate faults within the subducted oceanic mantle, the Mendocino transform plate boundary fault, and the thrust interface of the Cascadia subduction zone. Some of the depth variability of source spectra can be explained by the expected increase in rupture velocity with depth. However, the overall variation in stress drop estimates is consistent with the highest stress drop earthquakes occurring in the depth range predicted by strength envelopes. Moreover, the earthquakes in the vicinity of the thrust interface, likely including some within the subducted oceanic crust, show clearly lower stress drops and depletion of high-frequency radiation for their size compared to events in the oceanic mantle and along the transform fault at a given depth. Our results suggest that the variability in earthquake source spectra that can be expected in the Cascadia subduction zone is systematic and that the thrust interface operates at a lower stress level than the core of the subducted plate a few kilometers away. The Tonga-Lau-Fiji region is important to study plate-plume and subduction-ridge interactions, but its deep mantle structure is still not very clear. Here we present high-resolution tomography of 3-D P-wave azimuthal anisotropy down to 400 km depth of the Tonga subduction zone derived from arrival-time data of local earthquakes recorded at seafloor and land seismometers. The subducting Tong slab is imaged as high-velocity anomalies at depths of 100-400 km, whereas large-scale low-velocity anomalies down to 400 km depth are revealed in the mantle wedge beneath the backarc basin and volcanic arc. Trench-parallel anisotropy beneath the Lau Basin extends southwards to ∼140 km depth at ∼20.5°S, representing the extent of both southward flow of the Samoan plume and toroidal flow by the slab rollback. At depths of 140-400 km, the Lau Basin and Fiji Plateau mainly exhibit plate-parallel fast-velocity directions (FVDs) north of ∼20.5°S, indicating strong corner flow in the mantle wedge driven by the slab subduction and dehydration. The Tonga slab exhibits trench-parallel FVDs at depths of <200 km, reflecting fossil fabric formed during the plate spreading stage, whereas, at greater depths, the slab mainly exhibits trench-normal FVDs, which may reflect complicated deformations within the slab. We present two-dimensional P-wave velocity structure along two wide-angle ocean bottom seismometer profiles from the Aleutian basin in the Bering Sea. The basement here is commonly considered to be trapped oceanic crust, yet there is a change in orientation of magnetic lineations and gravity features within the basin that might reflect later processes. Line 1 extends ∼ 225 km from southwest to northeast, while Line 2 extends ∼ 225 km from northwest to southeast and crosses the observed change in magnetic lineation orientation. Velocities of the sediment layer increase from 2.0 km/s at the seafloor to 3.0–3.4 km/s just above basement, crustal velocities increase from 5.1–5.6 km/s at the top of basement to 7.0–7.1 km/s at the base of the crust, and upper mantle velocities are 8.1–8.2 km/s. Average sediment thickness is 3.8–3.9 km for both profiles. Crustal thickness varies from 6.2 to 9.6 km, with average thickness of 7.2 km on Line 1 and 8.8 km on Line 2. There is no clear change in crustal structure associated with a change in orientation of magnetic lineations and gravity features. The velocity structure is consistent with that of normal or thickened oceanic crust. Shear wave birefringence is a direct diagnostic of seismic anisotropy. It is often used to infer the northern limit of the underthrusting Indian lithosphere, based on the seismic anisotropy contrast between the Indian and Eurasian plates. Most studies have been made through several near north–south trending passive-source seismic experiments in southern Tibet. To investigate the geometry and the nature of the underthrusting Indian lithosphere, an east–west trending seismic array consisting of 48 seismographs was operated in the central Lhasa block from September 2009 to November 2010. Splitting of SKS waves was measured and verified with different methods. Along the profile, the direction of fast wave polarization is about 60° in average with small fluctuations. The delay time generally increases from east to west between 0.2 s and 1.0 s, and its variation correlates spatially with north–south oriented rifts in southern Tibet. The SKS wave arrives 1.0–2.0 s later at stations in the eastern part of the profile than in the west. The source of the anisotropy, estimated by non-overlapped parts of the Fresnel zones at stations with different splitting parameters, is concentrated above ca. 195 km depth. All the first-order features suggest that the geometry of the underthrusting Indian lithospheric slab in the Himalayan–Tibetan collision zone beneath southern Tibet is characterized by systematic lateral variations. The Lau Basin displays large along-strike variations in ridge characters with the changing proximity of the adjacent subduction zone. The mechanism governing these changes is not well understood but one hypotheses relates them to interaction between the arc and back-arc magmatic systems. We present a 3D seismic velocity model of the shallow mantle beneath the Eastern Lau back-arc Spreading Center (ELSC) and the adjacent Tofua volcanic arc obtained from ambient noise tomography of ocean bottom seismograph data. Our seismic images reveal an asymmetric upper mantle low velocity zone (LVZ) beneath the ELSC. Two major trends are present as the ridge-to-arc distance increases: (1) the LVZ becomes increasingly offset from the ridge to the north, where crust is thinner and the ridge less magmatically active; (2) the LVZ becomes increasingly connected to a sub-arc low velocity zone to the south. The separation of the ridge and arc low velocity zones is spatially coincident with the abrupt transition in crustal composition and ridge morphology. Our results present the first mantle imaging confirmation of a direct connection between crustal properties and uppermost mantle processes at ELSC, and support the prediction that as ELSC migrates away from the arc, a changing mantle wedge flow pattern leads to the separation of the arc and ridge melting regions. Slab-derived water is cutoff from the ridge, resulting in abrupt changes in crustal lava composition and crustal porosity. The larger offset between mantle melt supply and the ridge along the northern ELSC may reduce melt extraction efficiency along the ridge, further decreasing the melt budget and leading to the observed flat and faulted ridge morphology, thinner crust and the lack of an axial melt lens. Continuous time-series observations are key to understanding the temporal evolution of a seafloor hydrothermal system and its interplay with thermal and chemical processes in the ocean and Earth interior. In this paper, we present a 26-month time series of the heat flux driving a hydrothermal plume on the Endeavour Segment of the Juan de Fuca Ridge obtained using the Cabled Observatory Vent Imaging Sonar (COVIS). Since 2010, COVIS has been connected to the North East Pacific Time-series Underwater Networked Experiment (NEPTUNE) observatory that provides power and real-time data transmission. The heat flux time series has a mean value of 18.10 MW and a standard deviation of 6.44 MW. The time series has no significant global trend, suggesting the hydrothermal heat source remained steady during the observation period. The steadiness of the hydrothermal heat source coincides with reduced seismic activity at Endeavour observed in the seismic data recorded by an ocean bottom seismometer from 2011 to 2013. Furthermore, first-order estimation of heat flux based on the temperature measurements made by the Benthic and Resistivity Sensors (BARS) at a neighboring vent also supports the steadiness of the hydrothermal heat source. Between November 2009 and September 2011 the EarthScope USArray program deployed ~25 temporary seismograph stations on a 70-km grid in south-central Texas between 27°N-31°N and 96°W-101°W. This area includes the Eagle Ford Shale. For decades this geographic region has produced gas and oil from other strata using conventional methods, but recent developments in hydrofracturing technology has allowed extensive development of natural gas resources from within the Eagle Ford. Our study surveys small-magnitude seismic events and evaluates their correlation with fluid extraction and injection in the Eagle Ford, identifying and locating 62 probable earthquakes, including 58 not reported by the U.S. Geological Survey. The 62 probable earthquakes occur singly or in clusters at 14 foci; of these foci, two were situated near wells injecting recently increased volumes of water; eight were situated near wells extracting recently increased volumes of oil and/or water; and four were not situated near wells reporting significant injection/extraction increases. Thus in this region, while the majority of small earthquakes may be triggered/induced by human activity, they are more often associated with fluid extraction than with injection. We also investigated the MW4.8MW4.8 20 October 2011 Fashing earthquake--the largest historically reported earthquake in south-central Texas--that occurred two weeks after the removal of the temporary USArray stations. A field study indicated that the highest-intensity (MMI VI) region was about 10 km south of 2010-2011 foreshock activity, and that there were no high-volume injection wells within 20 km of the MMI V-VI region or the foreshocks. However, the 20 October 2011 earthquake did coincide with a significant increase in oil/water extraction volumes at wells within the MMI V-VI region, and this was also true for previous earthquakes felt at Fashing in 1973 and 1983. In contrast, our study found significant increases in injection prior to an mbLG3.6 20 July 1991 earthquake near Falls City, Texas. Thus the Eagle Ford geographic region, with seismic activity associated both with extraction and injection, appears to be more complex than the Barnett Shale of northeast Texas, where a similar survey found possible correlations only with fluid injection. Using network correlation methods, we generate low frequency earthquake templates for a set of 4 composite arrays on Vancouver Island and Washington state that employ data from EarthScope (Transportable and Flexible Arrays, Plate Boundary Observatory), POLARIS and permanent network (Canadian National Seismograph Network, Pacific Northwest Seismic Network) sources. On the basis of empirical and semi-analytical arguments, the templates can be viewed as Green's function sections corresponding to moment tensor point sources with step-function time dependence in displacement. Low frequency earthquake hypocentres follow the general epicentral distribution of tremor and occur along tightly defined surfaces in depth with Washington locations averaging slightly deeper than those on Vancouver Island. We invert template waveforms for moment tensor mechanisms and find that data are well modelled by double couple sources. For southern Vancouver Island, with the highest quality templates, the majority of mechanisms are consistent with shallow thrusting in the direction of plate motion. The three other data sets with lower signal to noise levels show predominantly thrust mechanisms with more variable orientations. Taken together with other constraints, our observations support the hypothesis that low frequency earthquakes manifest shear slip on a relatively thin plate boundary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The March 2011 9.0 Tohoku-Oki earthquake activated shallow aftershocks with normal faulting focal mechanisms near the trench axis. To investigate stress state in the shallow subduction zone near the trench axis, we used ocean bottom seismographs (OBSs) to record earthquakes from August to October 2011. We estimated hypocenter locations and focal mechanisms of the recorded earthquakes by using a grid-search method in a 2-D velocity model based on an active seismic survey. The results show that most of the earthquakes occurred within both the overriding and subducting plates, with very few on the plate interface and none in the most seaward 45 km of the overriding plate (aseismic wedge). The low seismicity along the plate interface is consistent with the nearly complete stress drop on the megathrust fault in the 9.0 earthquake. Focal mechanisms indicate that trench-normal tension is pre-dominant in both plates and extends to a depth of about 30 km at least. On the other hand, several trench-normal compressional earthquakes were located at the landward end of the aseismic wedge. These earthquakes suggest horizontal compression of the overriding prism that may be caused by a strengthening of the shallowest part of the megathrust. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The mountains across southern Norway and other margins of the North Atlantic Ocean appear conspicuously high in the absence of recent convergent tectonics. We investigate this phenomenon with receiver functions calculated for seismometers deployed across southern Fennoscandia. These are used to constrain the structure and seismic properties of the lithosphere and primarily to measure the thickness and infer the bulk composition of the crust. Such parameters are key to understanding crustal isostasy and assessing its role, or lack thereof, in supporting the observed elevations. Our study focuses on the southern Scandes mountain range that has an average elevation >1.0 km above mean sea level. The crust–mantle boundary (Moho) is ubiquitously imaged, and we occasionally observe structures that may represent the base of the continental lithosphere or other thermal, chemical, or viscous boundaries in the upper mantle. The Moho resides at ∼25–30 km depth below mean sea level in southeastern coastal Norway and parts of Denmark, ∼35–45 km across the southern Scandes, and ∼50–60 km near the Norwegian–Swedish border. That section of thickest crust coincides with much of the Transscandinavian Igneous Belt and often exhibits a diffuse conversion at the Moho, which probably results from the presence of a high wave speed, mafic lower crust across inner Fennoscandia. A zone of thinned crust (<35 km) underlies the Oslo Graben. Crustal Vp/Vs ratio measurements show trends that generally correlate with Moho depth; relatively high Vp/Vs occurs near the coast and areas affected by post-Caledonide rifting and lower Vp/Vs appears in older, unrifted crust across the southern Scandes. Our results indicate that most of the observed surface elevation in the southern Scandes is supported by an Airy-like crustal root and potentially thin mantle lithosphere. To the east, where thicker crust and mantle lithosphere underlie low elevations, the presence of dense mafic lower crust fits a Pratt-like model for isostatic compensation. Because the Scandes mountains occupy the location of the ancient Caledonian orogeny, which created presumably much thicker crust and lithosphere by ca. 400 Ma, much of the dense lower crust or mantle lithosphere that is expected to form beneath large mountain belts must have been removed sometime afterwards to instill the current lithospheric architecture that underlies the region. The Mw 7.0 Constitución earthquake of March 2012 is one of the largest interplate aftershocks of the Maule 2010 Mw 8.8 mega-thrust earthquake. This event was recorded by high-rate GPS stations, local seismometers and accelerometers, the Global Seismographic Network and SAR acquisitions by the ENVISAT satellite. We have used these data to perform a kinematic inversion and back projection to identify the principal characteristics of this event. The Constitución earthquake nucleated at 39 km depth and then propagated up-dip at subshear speed towards its centroid, with an unusually long initiation phase that lasted almost 6 s. The largest slip of this event was located in the deeper part of the subduction interface, between the region of maximum co-seismic slip of the 2010 Maule earthquake, and the area where rapid afterslip occurred following that event. Features of the Constitución earthquake may suggest that larger interplate aftershocks of the Maule event preferentially occur in the deeper part of the plate interface where ruptures are complex, produce high frequencies and involve numerous asperities. Abstract: New marine seismic reflection and coincident wide-angle ocean-bottom seismometer data acquired offshore Taiwan provide high-resolution constraints on the crustal structure of an incipient mountain belt during the earliest stage of arc–continent collision. The new seismic reflection image and travel-time tomography velocity model show evidence for crust of the distal southern Chinese continental margin being subducted eastward beneath the Manila trench and underplated to the accretionary wedge before collision with the southern Chinese continental shelf. The distal margin crust consists of highly extended continental crust interspersed with volcanic bodies and a high-velocity lower crustal layer of likely magmatic intrusions. The distal margin crust is 10–14km thick outboard of the trench, but thins to 6km thick beneath the lower slope of the Manila trench accretionary wedge. Along the lower slope of the accretionary prism, we image westward-verging imbricate thrusts and folded strata up to 10km thick. A sharp decrease in bathymetry marks the transition from lower to upper slope, where we observe a fast (>6.0km/s) seismic velocity anomaly at the base of the wedge that we interpret as structurally underplated crust from the distal continental margin. Our results support a model of arc–continent collision in Taiwan where the accretionary wedge is first thickened by structural underplating of distal margin crust prior to collision with the continental shelf. The crustal rocks exposed throughout the Central Range in Taiwan may be similarly derived from subducted and structurally underplated crust from the highly extended distal continental margin. Abstract: We use common conversion point (CCP) stacking of Ps receiver functions to image the crustal structure and Moho of the Garhwal Himalaya of India. Our seismic array of 21 broadband seismometers spanned the Himalayan thrust wedge at 79–80°E, between the Main Frontal Thrust and the South Tibet Detachment, in 2005–2006. Our CCP image shows the Main Himalayan Thrust (MHT), the detachment at the base of the Himalayan thrust wedge, with a flat-ramp-flat geometry. Seismic impedance contrasts inferred from geologic cross-sections in Garhwal imply a negative impedance contrast (velocity decreasing downward) for the upper flat, located beneath the Lower Himalaya, and a positive impedance contrast (velocity increasing downward) for the ramp, located beneath the surface trace of the Munsiari Thrust (or MCT-I). At the lower flat, located beneath the Higher Himalaya, spatially coincident measurements of very high electrical conductivities require the presence of free fluids, and we infer a negative impedance contrast on the MHT caused by ponding of these fluids beneath the detachment. Our seismic image indicates that the upper flat of the MHT is below sea level and dips north at , connecting to a mid-crustal ramp which is high and dips at . The lower flat is 20–25km below sea level and dips at . The Main Central Thrust (MCT) appears as a negative impedance contrast, dipping at . The Moho is nearly horizontal at 35–45km depth beneath the Sub-Himalaya and Lower Himalaya, deepening to 50km or more beneath the Higher Himalaya. This depth is 10–25km shallower than in the NW Indian Himalaya and 5–10km shallower than in central Nepal, requiring significant along-strike variations in crustal thickness. Abstract: The distribution of fault slip in an earthquake controls seismic surface deformation and ground shaking, and is the most direct record of fault response to tectonic stress. Detailed information about slip patterns in large earthquakes is only available where a dense local network of seismometers is in place. Elsewhere, the evaluation of earthquake source and mechanism relies on observation of proxies such as surface change or damage intensity. In upland areas the density of seismically induced landslides is strongly influenced by the intensity and duration of strong ground motion, and therefore contains information about the earthquake source mechanism. Here we show that density patterns of co-seismic landslides closely track the distribution of fault slip in two large thrust earthquakes in Japan. When adjusted for site effects, landslide distributions readily obtained from remote sensed images can supplement or replace instrumental records of earthquakes, opening historical and remote events for close geophysical investigation. Abstract: Very-long-period (VLP) pulses with widths of 20s on velocity seismograms were observed during volcanic activity at Miyake-jima Volcano, Japan in 2000. The VLP events occurred repeatedly during a few days prior to caldera formation and essentially vanished following the onset of caldera collapse. Waveform inversions of the pulse-like signals point to a source offset 3.5km beneath and 1km south of the summit. A candidate for the source mechanism is the inflation of an elliptical cylinder with axis tilted 20–30° from vertical and major axis of the elliptical cross section oriented northeast-southwest. The inferred mechanism appears consistent with a step-like pressurization of a magma reservoir impacted by a falling rock mass in response to gravitational instability. Abstract: Intraslab events recorded by ocean-bottom seismometers in the Okinawa trough provide an extended depiction of shear wave splitting in the southwest section of the Ryukyu subduction zone. At 100–200km from the western edge of the subduction system, we observed trench-normal fast polarization direction in the back arc compatible with 2D slab- or rifting-driven corner flow. Towards the edge, the fast directions are sub-parallel to the trench in the arc—back arc region, and rotate to trench-normal within 50km of the edge. Splitting constrained by land stations with paths mostly in the mantle wedge exhibits similar trench-normal fast directions in the subduction edge zone. Further inland, the dominant component of fast directions becomes roughly parallel to the Taiwan orogenic fabric. Splitting of P-to-S phases converted at the Moho of the Okinawa trough and of S phases from shallow events suggest that crustal anisotropy may affect the measured splitting, but the observed pattern reflects predominantly mantle anisotropy. The variation in splitting along the Okinawa trough cannot be explained by a B-type–A-type olivine fabric transition in the mantle wedge. It may indicate the presence of an along-arc flow in the mantle wedge towards the edge where it is blocked and deflected by the Eurasian lithosphere. Abstract: The Sumatran margin suffered three great earthquakes in recent years (Aceh-Andaman 26 December 2004 Mw=9.1, Nias 28 March 2005 Mw=8.7, Bengkulu 12 September 2007 Mw=8.5). Here we present local earthquake data from a dense, amphibious local seismic network covering a segment of the Sumatran margin that last ruptured in 1797. The occurrence of forearc islands along this part of the Sumatran margin allows the deployment of seismic land-stations above the shallow part of the thrust fault. In combination with ocean bottom seismometers this station geometry provides high quality hypocentre location for the updip end of the seismogenic zone in an area where geodetic data are also available. In this region, the Investigator Fracture Zone (IFZ), which consists of 4 sub-ridges, is subducted below the Sunda plate. This topography appears to influence seismicity at all depth intervals. A well-defined linear streak of seismicity extending from 80 to 200 km depth lies along the prolongation of closely spaced IFZ sub-ridges. More intermediate depth seismicity is located to the southeast of this string of seismicity and is related to subducted rough oceanic seafloor. Abstract: Interplate coupling in the southernmost extent of the northeast Japan subduction zone (east off-Kanto, Japan) is investigated in detail using a large data set of small repeating earthquakes. In this region of the trench-trench-trench type triple junction, the subducting Pacific plate is in contact with two different overlying plates (the North American and Philippine Sea plates). The border between the two overlying plates extending northwestward from the triple junction is identified along the upper surface of the Pacific plate based on the slip vectors of many interplate events including small repeating earthquakes. The interplate coupling coefficient estimated from the cumulative slip of small repeating earthquakes for the period from 1993 to 2007 reveals a distinct change from south (ca. 0.3) to north (ca. 0.7) across the border. This border also corresponds to the southern limit of the source areas of M>7 interplate earthquakes in the last 80 years along the Japan trench, again indicating the stronger coupling to the north. We also investigate hypocenter distribution and seismic velocity structure along the plate boundary from a large number of travel-time data obtained from the nationwide seismograph network. The results reveal a distinct low-velocity zone just above the Pacific plate and low seismicity along the plate boundary in the region overlain by the Philippine Sea plate, whereas there are no low-velocity zones and the seismicity is high in the region overlain by the North American plate. Abstract: We have determined the three-dimensional shear wave speed structure of the upper mantle in and around the Philippine Sea region using seismograms recorded by dense land-based and long-term broadband ocean bottom seismographic stations. We used a surface wave tomography technique in which multimode phase speeds are measured and inverted for a 3-D shear wave speed structure by incorporating the effects of a finite frequency and ray bending. The new ocean bottom data provided us with improved spatial resolution (~300 km) in the Philippine Sea region. In the upper 120 km, the shear wave speed structure is well correlated with seafloor age. At depths greater than 160 km, fast anomalies of the subducting Pacific Plate are clearly defined. We also found slow speed anomalies beneath the Kyushu–Palau ridge at depths greater than 120 km. Along the Izu–Bonin(Ogasawara)–Mariana arc, we have detected three separate slow anomalies in the mantle wedge at depths shallower than 100 km beneath the back arc. Each anomaly has a width of ~500 km. Moreover, these three anomalies have a close relationship with the three groups of frontal and rear arc volcanoes having distinct Sr, Nd, and Pb isotope ratios. We suggest that each of the anomalies is a site of large-scale flow of upper mantle into the mantle wedge, and that each already contains a component from the adjacent subducting slab. Abstract: Shear waves from intermediate and deep focus South American events recorded by California broadband seismometers reveal complex anisotropy in the lowermost mantle. ScS waves densely sample the D″ region beneath the Cocos Plate, just west of Central America (1–16°N; 267–277°E). Our data show evidence for significant near-source anisotropy, which we constrain for each event by performing polarization analyses on an expanded dataset of S waveforms. ScS waveforms are corrected for upper mantle and near-source anisotropy, and estimates of D″ anisotropy are made using the covariance method. We find splits between fast and slow components of ScS ranging from 0.4 to 2.5 s, with an average of 1.6 s. Fast polarization directions in the southern portion of our study area are approximately orthogonal to the raypaths. North of 7° latitude there is a rapid change in fast polarization direction to nearly raypath parallel. Beyond 10° latitude fast directions are more highly scattered than in southern regions. Past work in the region has inferred strong lateral variations in shear wave velocity, but fairly uniform transverse isotropy. In contrast, our results indicate that the lowermost mantle beneath the Cocos plate has azimuthal anisotropy that varies laterally over scales of 100–200 km. Abstract: As part of an extensive seismic research program, 33 portable broadband seismic stations were deployed along a line crossing the Bohai Bay Basin, northern China. Three teleseismic events were selected to constrain the seismic structure along a ∼280 km profile across the western edge of the basin. We determined the basin structure that described the observed shear horizontal (SH) wave field. The synthetic SH wave was calculated using a finite difference (FD) method with its computational domain localized in the basin area and input motions at the base of the model extrapolated from the displacement recorded at a nearby hard-rock station. Synthetic seismographs calculated for the models match the observations well in both waveform and travel time. Numerical tests indicate that the structural features of the preferred models are well resolved. The analysis of relations between structures and stratigraphic units along the cross sections allows multiple deformational events in the basin to be inferred. In conjunction with a profile across the southern edge that has been presented previously by Zhao et al. [14] [L. Zhao, T.Y. Zheng, W.W. Xu, Modeling the Jiyang depression, Northern China, using a wave field extrapolation FD method and waveform inversion, Bull. Seismol. Soc. Along the Nankai trough, southwestern Japan, the Philippine Sea plate (PSP) is subducting beneath the Eurasian plate, and large interplate earthquakes have occurred repeatedly with a recurrence interval of about 100–200 years. The most recent large thrust event in the eastern Nankai trough off Kii Peninsula was the 1944 Tonankai earthquake. In this region, current seismicity is very low and hypocenters are not determined accurately by the land seismic network. We conducted microseismicity observations around the rupture area of the 1944 Tonankai earthquake using ocean bottom seismographs (OBSs). Hypocenters were determined using a 2-D seismic velocity structure model based on an airgun-OBS seismic survey. Results obtained show that the seismicity was relatively active near the trough axis. These earthquakes may relate to deformation of the subducting Philippine Sea plate. On the other hand, microseismicity in the rupture area of the 1944 Tonankai earthquake was very low. This low-level seismic activity in the co-seismic rupture area of the 1944 Tonankai earthquake likely relates to a single large asperity off Kii Peninsula. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

• S-to-P images the lithosphere–asthenosphere boundary near the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. • The lithosphere–asthenosphere boundary deepens with age, not always monotonically. • We infer melt in punctuated upwellings and in channels, 2 stages of melt migration. • Melt generation and migration dictate a dynamic lithosphere–asthenosphere boundary. • Rising melt may push the plates from below, and melt channels facilitate decoupling. In plate tectonic theory a weak asthenosphere is required to facilitate the motions of the rigid plates. Partial melt could weaken the mantle, in turn impacting convection, but to date the existence of persistent melt has remained controversial. A wide range of scenarios has been reported in terms of the location, amount and pathways of melt. Here we use data collected by 39 ocean bottom seismometers deployed near the equatorial Mid-Atlantic Ridge on 0 to 80 Myr old seafloor. We calculate S-to-P (Sp) receiver functions and perform waveform modeling. We jointly interpret with shear-wave velocity tomography from surface waves and magnetotelluric (MT) imaging to take advantage of a range of resolutions and sensitivities and illuminate the structure of the oceanic lithosphere and the underlying asthenosphere. We image a tectonic plate thickness that increases with age in one location but undulates in another location. We infer thin and slightly thicker melt channels and punctuated regions of ascending partial melt several hundred kilometers off the ridge axis. This suggests melt persists over geologic timescales, although its character is dynamic, with implications for the lithosphere–asthenosphere boundary (LAB) and the driving forces of the plates. Ascending melt intermittently feeds melt channels at the base of the plate. The associated melt-enhanced buoyancy increases the influence of ridge-push in driving plate motions, whereas the channelized melt reduces the resistance of the plates to motion. • Detected and located 116 earthquakes in 40 days, 4× the amount in the regional catalog. • Imaged the Central Oregon forearc down to 40 km depth using local earthquake tomography. • 2D Vp and Vp/Vs models show a compositional difference between the upper and lower Siletzia Terrane. • The western lower crust has a low Vp zone representing the presence of slab derived fluids. • The eastern lower crust has a high Vp zone showing a strong, unfractured Siletzia Terrane. The crustal structure of the overriding plate in a subduction zone can have significant effects on subduction processes and therefore hazard along the margin. To investigate the controls of the overriding North American crust on the Cascadia Subduction Zone, a dense, trench perpendicular line of nodal seismometers was deployed in the Central Oregon forearc. The location of this deployment was chosen to fulfill two main goals (1) to examine the utility of large-N, short duration, nodal deployments in passive source seismic imaging (2) and to gain a better understanding of the structure of the Central Oregon forearc. With ∼40 days of continuous data recorded on 174, 3-component, 5 Hz instruments in a 130 km line with 500 m station spacing, 116 earthquakes and explosions are detected and located, a ∼3.5-fold increase from the number reported by the regional Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (PNSN) catalog. P, S, and PmP travel times from earthquakes located near the line of stations are used in a local earthquake tomography study to model Vp/Vs in the upper/middle crust and Vp throughout the crust of central Oregon down to 40 km depth. In conjunction, these models show a clear compositional discontinuity between the upper and lower Siletzia Terrane at ∼10 km depth as well as a zone of low Vp (6.5–6.8 km/s) in the lower crust that is attributed to slab derived fluids. This region of low Vp is juxtaposed with high Vp (6.9–7.2 km/s) to the east, interpreted as a strong, unfractured, block of Siletzia. High pore fluid pressures in the lower crust have been imaged to varying degrees across the Cascadia subduction zone. These features may be related to both the occurrence of tremor near the plate interface and the reduction of upper plate crustal earthquakes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• Central Tibet has undulating Moho beneath a near-uniform surface. • Trade-off between bulk crustal thickness and P -wave speed minimized. • A zone of disrupted Moho occurs near the Indian mantle front (IMF). • The Indian crustal front overlies the Indian mantle front (ICF). • IMF/ICF marks the subsurface zone of continental collision. We present 805 reliable estimates of crustal thickness in central Tibet, revealing an undulating Moho beneath a near-uniform surface of the highest and the largest plateau in the world. Our results are derived from wide-angle reflections of P -waves from virtual seismic sources near seismographs (Virtual Deep Seismic Sounding, VDSS). The virtual sources are produced by large earthquakes well-distributed in back-azimuth; and we also utilize obvious changes of measured arrival times as a function of ray-parameter to constrain independently bulk thickness and P -wave speed of the crust (about 6.3 km/s), so there is little trade-off between the two parameters. Additionally, we consider effects of known heterogeneities in the upper mantle. In regions surrounding the Hi-CLIMB linear array, there is an eastward trend, in addition to the previously proposed northward trend, of crustal thinning. Respectively, these trends are approximately parallel and normal to the Indian mantle front (IMF), or the northern, leading edge of underthrust lithospheric mantle of India, deduced from a collection of additional geophysical evidence. The Moho near the IMF also shows large, 3-D variations in depths, prompting us to propose that the leading edge of intact Indian lower crust, or the Indian crustal front (ICF) that accompanied the underthrusting Indian lithospheric mantle beneath Tibet, lies along the zone of disturbed Moho. Based on results from about a dozen permanent broadband seismographs of the China National Seismic Network, more-or-less flat-lying, and thus presumably stable, cratonic Indian Moho south of the ICF apparently extends eastward for another 500 km to about 93°E.
