The Kuroshio Current (KC) is the northward branch of the North Pacific subtropical gyre (NPG) and exerts influence on the exchange of physical, chemical, and biological properties of downstream regions in the Pacific Ocean. Resolving long-term changes in the flow of the KC water masses is, therefore, crucial for advancing our understanding of the Pacific's role in global ocean and climate variability. Here, we reconstruct changes in KC dynamics over the past 20 ka based on grain-size spectra, clay mineral, and Sr–Nd isotope constraints of sediments from the northern Okinawa Trough. Combined with published sediment records surrounding the NPG, we suggest that the KC remained in the Okinawa Trough throughout the Last Glacial Maximum. Together with Earth-System-Model simulations, our results additionally indicate that KC intensified considerably during the early Holocene (EH). The synchronous establishment of the KC “water barrier” and the modern circulation pattern during the EH highstand shaped the sediment transport patterns. This is ascribed to the precession-induced increase in the occurrence of La Niña-like state and the strength of the East Asian summer monsoon. The synchronicity of the shifts in the intensity of the KC, Kuroshio extension, and El Niño/La Niña-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) variability may further indicate that the western branch of the NPG has been subject to basin-scale changes in wind stress curl over the North Pacific in response to low-latitude insolation. Superimposed on this long-term trend are high-amplitude, large century, and millennial-scale variations during last 5 ka, which are ascribed to the advent of modern ENSO when the equatorial oceans experienced stronger insolation during the boreal winter. Abstract Continuous and high-resolution records of the content, mass accumulation rate (MAR) and δ 13 C values of black carbon obtained from Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Site U1430 in the southwestern Japan Sea have been established and combined with previous results obtained from Central Asia. The main objective of this work is to reconstruct the historical changes in vegetation types (C3–C4), and to constrain the driving force of C4 plant expansion over the last 13 Ma. The stable carbon isotope value of black carbon (δ 13 C BC) shows a major shift since the Miocene–Pliocene boundary (∼5.3 Ma), suggesting significant expansion of C4 plants in broad areas of Central Asia, including the inland basins of northwestern China and the Loess Plateau. However, a decline in the content and MAR of black carbon reveals the absence of any link between fire and C4 plant expansion in Central Asia, due to the dramatic decrease in biomass under a drying regime. On a global scale, asynchronous expansion of C4 plants suggests that regional hydroclimatic change, rather than decline in CO 2 concentration, was the most important factor to influence C4 expansion. We propose that the increased seasonality and the enhanced long-term aridity driven by the concurrent decline in winter westerly vapor, and increase in East Asian summer monsoon precipitation, were the main driving forces of C4 plant expansion in broad areas of Central Asia. Variations in winter westerly moisture have played a significant role in changes of regional climate and vegetation in Central Asia since the late Miocene. We present high-resolution analyses of clay mineral assemblages combined with analysis of Sr–Nd–Pb isotopic compositions of the <2 μm silicate fraction of sediments from Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Site U1430 in the southern Sea of Japan, in order to trace the sources of clay minerals and reconstruct proxy records of past changes in Asian eolian input to the basin since 15 Ma. The clay mineral assemblages at IODP Site U1430 mainly consist of smectite (∼51%) and illite (∼36%), with minor kaolinite (∼7%) and chlorite (∼6%). Provenance analysis suggests that the fine-grained sediment at the study site is a two end-member mixture of eolian dust from Central Asia and fluvial input from the Japanese islands. The Central Asian end member supplied illite-rich and high 87 Sr/ 86 Sr and low ε Nd(0) eolian dust to the study site by wind, while the Japanese end member, characterized by young volcanic rocks, contributed smectite-rich, low 87 Sr/ 86 Sr and high ε Nd(0) weathering products via rivers. The ratio of illite/smectite and ε Nd(0) values of clay-sized silicate sediments at Site U1430 were used as proxies for tracing the changing strength of central Asian eolian input to the Sea of Japan, and thus reconstruct the aridification history of its source region. Our study presents for the first time a continuous, high-resolution record that highlights the four-step drying of Central Asia that occurred at ∼11.8 Ma, 8 Ma, 3.5 Ma and 1.2 Ma. Considered the nature and timing of major climatic and tectonic events in Asia, we conclude that the strengthened aridification of Central Asia starting at ∼11.8 Ma was possibly driven by the combined effect of Tibetan surface uplift and global cooling, whereas the rapid drying at ∼8 Ma was caused primarily by the uplift of the northern Tibetan Plateau. In contrast, global cooling, overwhelming the influence of Tibetan Plateau uplift, has become the primary control on Central Asia aridification since ∼3.5 Ma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During the Holocene, the most notably climatic change across the African continent is the African Humid Period (AHP), however the pace and primary forcing for this pluvial condition is still ambiguous, particularly in East Africa. We present a high-resolution marine sediment record off Tanzania to provide insights into the climatic conditions of inland East Africa during the Holocene. Major element ratios (i.e., log-ratios of Fe/Ca and Ti/Ca), derived from X-Ray Fluorescence scanning, have been employed to document variations in humidity in East Africa. Our results show that the AHP is represented by two humid phases: an intense humid period from the beginning of the Holocene to 8 ka (AHP I); and a moderate humid period spanning from 8 to 5.5 ka (AHP II). On the basis of our geochemical record and regime detection, the termination of the AHP initiated at 5.5 ka and ceased around 3.5 ka. Combined with other paleoclimatic records around East Africa, we suggest that the humid conditions in this region responded to Northern Hemisphere (NH) summer insolation. The AHP I and II might have been related to an eastward shift of the Congo Air Boundary and warmer conditions in the western Indian Ocean, which resulted in additional moisture being delivered from the Atlantic and Indian Oceans during the NH summer and autumn, respectively. We further note a drought event throughout East Africa north of 10°S around 8.2 ka, which may have been related to the southward migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone in response to the NH cooling event. The Pearl River drains the South China Block and delivers large amounts of sediments to the northern South China Sea, and its development can be closely linked to the regional paleoenvironmental changes. However, the evolutionary history of the Pearl River has been poorly understood, mainly because of the lack of continuous and high-resolution sedimentary records over a long geological time. In this study, we present multiple new analytical results, including clay mineral assemblages and Sr-Nd isotopic compositions of the <2 μm siliciclastic sediments, from the latest deep sea drilling core in the northern South China Sea from International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Site U1501. We aim to reconstruct the evolutionary history of the Pearl River by tracing changes in clay mineral assemblages and Sr-Nd isotopic compositions. Provenance analysis indicates that the sediment source experienced a significant change between 32 and 30 Ma. Specifically, sediments prior to 32 Ma were derived from the southeastern Cathaysia coast, whereas sediments post to 30 Ma were mainly supplied by a proto-Pearl River. This provenance transition indicates that the modern-scale Pearl River has fully developed at least ∼30 Ma and began to contribute sediments to the northern South China Sea. We additionally compared the timings of major climatic and tectonic events in this region, and suggest that the topographic uplift of the SE Tibetan Plateau most likely drove the large-scale westward expansion of rivers drainage from the coast located in the Cathaysia Block to the interior of Yangtze Block. As a result of this fluvial drainage evolution followed by the development of Pearl River, geochemical and clay mineralogical characteristics of the deposits in the northern South China Sea correspondingly changed. • The first continuous record of South China erosion from the South China Sea since ∼35 Ma. • The provenance records reveal the formation of the modern-scale Pearl River at ∼30 Ma. • The uplift of Southeastern Tibetan Plateau promotes the formation of the Pearl River. Clay mineralogical analysis and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis were performed on deep-sea sediments cored on the Benham Rise (core MD06-3050) in order to reconstruct long-term evolution of East Asian Summer Monsoon (EASM) rainfall in the period since 2.36 Ma. Clay mineralogical variations are due to changes in the ratios of smectite, which derive from weathering of volcanic rocks in Luzon Island during intervals of intensive monsoon rainfall, and illite- and chlorite-rich dusts, which are transported from East Asia by winds associated with the East Asian Winter Monsoon (EAWM). Since Luzon is the main source of smectite to the Benham Rise, long-term consistent variations in the smectite/(illite + chlorite) ratio in core MD06-3050 as well as ODP site 1146 in the Northern South China Sea suggest that minor contributions of eolian dust played a role in the variability of this mineralogical ratio and indicate strengthening EASM precipitation in SE Asia during time intervals from 2360 to 1900 kyr, 1200 to 600 kyr, and after 200 kyr. The EASM rainfall record displays a 30 kyr periodicity suggesting the influence of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO). These intervals of rainfall intensification on Luzon Island are coeval with a reduction in precipitation over central China and an increase in zonal SST gradient in the equatorial Pacific Ocean, implying a reinforcement of La Niña-like conditions. In contrast, periods of reduced rainfall on Luzon Island are associated with higher precipitation in central China and a weakening zonal SST gradient in the equatorial Pacific Ocean, thereby suggesting the development of dominant El Niño-like conditions. Our study, therefore, highlights for the first time a long-term temporal and spatial co-evolution of monsoonal precipitation in East Asia and of the tropical Pacific ENSO system over the past 2.36 Ma.
