• Literature review papers related to the tourism-energy nexus are analyzed. • Four main groups are identified considering the quantitative methodology used. • Topics and discussions on the nexus between tourism and energy are developed. • Future research is discussed. The high dependence of tourism activities on energy consumption, and particularly on non-renewable energy, is a major barrier to building sustainable tourism models. For this reason, the analysis of tourism and energy use is a growing field of study within sustainability debates. Despite this, there is a gap in the literature and, to the best of our knowledge, there is no previous study that critically reviews the vast literature on the energy-tourism nexus. This paper aims to fill this gap in tourism knowledge. The main objective of this article is to conduct a systematic review of scientific studies with a quantitative empirical basis that examine this nexus, trying to answer the following questions: What are the main methodologies used to approach the tourism-energy nexus? which indicators or variables are relevant?; is there a consensus on the results?; and what are the main lines of discussion on the use of energy in tourism? To this end, we particularly focus on the main methodologies, results and perspectives during the period 2001–2021. A total of 1,189 articles were reviewed by abstract and title, 236 were included for the full review and 163 were finally selected. The results show how the nexus and energy dependence of tourism is assessed mainly from four major methodological groups: G1) econometric models, regressions and other statistical methodologies (67% of the sample); G2) surveys, questionnaires and energy audits (15%); G3) Life Cycle Analysis (13%) and G4) other approaches and environmental impact indicators to assess the relationship between energy and tourism (5%). The analysis between the causal relationships between tourism development, economic growth, energy use, environmental degradation and energy efficiency of accommodations are the main issues evaluated, considering a wide range of indicators/variables. Based on the gaps and limitations found in the literature review on tourism and energy, it is discussed how some findings should be interpreted with caution due to their methodological approaches and differences. • This paper provides a comprehensive conceptual analysis of disaster resilience in climate-vulnerable communities. • The research employs the Walker and Avant Method to elucidate the notion of resilience within the framework of climate vulnerability. • A practical framework and a set of ecological indicators are proposed for environmental impact assessments in disaster resilience. • The research provides tangible illustrations of the proposed approaches and indicators in practical contexts. Resilience is a prior term of debate in vulnerability research irrespective of discipline. Nowadays the resilience concept has been used abnormally in many cases without realizing its intended meaning. Therefore, this study clarifies the resilience concept in the context of climate vulnerability. An integrated review of the literature has been done by the PRISMA approach to identify the most relevant documents. Besides Walker and Avant Method has been used to analyze the concept of resilience. The use of concept in different disciplines, historical perspectives, dimensions, attributes, consequences, and relationship with vulnerability and adaptability have been reviewed to clarify it. This study also provides a theoretical and workable definition of resilience from the perspective of climate change and natural hazards. A conceptual framework has been developed with concept mapping, contributing to the existing debate on resilience study. A case analysis has been done by focusing on a climate-vulnerable community living in the riverine islands in Bangladesh. This article shows that socio-ecological systems approach to defining small island disaster resilience has shortcomings. Additionally, the research-policy divide in resilience studies is exacerbated by the paucity of studies that use the participatory approach to identify disaster resilience indicators. The study makes a compelling case for further research on how to turn academic discoveries into a resource that might benefit local people, particularly those on small islands. Abstract Extreme weather events have been affecting local environmental sustainability. Previous literature in this field evaluates environmental sustainability based mainly on past and current resource consumption and availability, however, knowledge about the status and potential changes of environmental sustainability under future climate extremes is missing. This paper proposes an integrated approach (combining the Ecological Footprint Analysis with econometric regressions) to predict future environmental sustainability under different climate scenarios. Based on the case study of the U.S. Rio Grande Basin, the results show that this region has been sustainable in 1982–2012, although sustainability levels have been declining over time. In addition, projections for the future show that the entire region will most likely move away from sustainability by the end of this century under the high emission scenario (e.g., RCP8.5). These findings are relevant for sustainable resource management and allocation of local environmental resources as well as for decision-making support regarding climate risk adaptation and mitigation strategies. Observed meteorological data demonstrates that temperature has increased by 0.74 °C in the last hundred years with the bulk of the warming occurring in the last 50 years. This paper examines the impact of climate change on five major crops in the former state of Andhra Pradesh using district level panel data for the period 1981–2010. Analysis of data shows that crop yields are significantly impacted by climate for rice, tobacco and groundnut. Crops grown in rabi are more susceptible to changes in climate than those in kharif, while drought crops like jowar are found to withstand changes in climate better than others. Human activities create more reactive nitrogen than is created through natural processes every year. The excess reactive nitrogen in the environment causes various negative effects including eutrophication, climate change, acidification, and human health problems. The sources of the excess nitrogen are mainly fertilizers and animal and human waste generated by food production and consumption. Therefore, our food choices have major effects on the nitrogen load to the environment. To quantify the load, a consumption-based accounting tool, called the nitrogen footprint, has been recently developed. In current nitrogen footprint models, seafood is calculated as a single category using the same simple assumptions as livestock. However, there is a variety of types and methods of production of seafood. In addition, world per capita consumption of seafood is projected to continue expanding. In this paper, we propose a new nitrogen footprint model to evaluate the impact of seafood in detail, present the results of the model applied to Japan as a case study, and explain the important parameters that are needed to accurately evaluate the load of seafood consumption. Our model tracks the feeding steps in detail, considering differences among fed aquacultured seafood, non-fed aquacultured seafood (mainly bivalves and filter-feeding carp), and captured seafood. Our model evaluates the Japanese food nitrogen footprint of fed aquacultured seafood as 0.7 kg-N/capita/year, ca. 45% of that of all seafood, whereas the previous model evaluates it as 3.36 kg-N/capita/year. Our results demonstrate that the key factors for assessing the nitrogen load of seafood are the proportions of fed aquaculture and of plant protein in feed. In order to enable food choices that will effectively reduce nitrogen release, we provide the virtual N factors (per intake nitrogen release during production) for different seafood as 0.2 (non-fed aquacultured and captured), 4.8 (freshwater and diadromous fish), 3.9 (demersal fish), 3.4 (pelagic fish and other marine fish), and 8.2 (crustaceans). Our results show that eating more non-fed aquacultured and captured seafood and less fed-aquacultured shrimps and prawns could reduce our nitrogen load from food consumption as effectively as choosing poultry instead of beef. Although its evaluation is limited to nitrogen load related to food itself and not including the load from energy use, etc., our detailed nitrogen footprint model for different seafood categories and production sources can quantify the effectiveness of policies and actions that link sustainable consumption and sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, contributing toward the Aichi Biodiversity Targets. In the literature of ecological indicators, more attention has yet to be paid to the potential effects of spatial autocorrelation (SAC) on the prediction of plant community structure. At a selected foredune ridge in a temperate coast of South Korea, this research developed two regression models: (1) a non-spatial ordinary least squares (OLS) in which the fine-scale (ca. 10 m) variability of diversity was predicted by soil and topographic parameters and (2) a spatial model in which spatial filters extracted by spatial eigenvector mapping were incorporated as additional predictors into the original OLS. After such incorporation, a reduction apparently occurred in the predictive power of the environmental variables, especially those with an inherently high amount of SAC. For example, Mg 2+ was the most significant predictor for species diversity in OLS, but it became insignificant in spatial regression. This indicates that, during the incorporation of SAC, the predictive importance of Mg 2+ was replaced by that of spatial filters. In other words, because the SAC of Mg 2+ was inherently strong (global Moran's I = 0.68, p < 0.001), this soil attribute became redundant when the spatial filters were added to the non-spatial OLS. These discussions corroborate the general idea of this paper that SAC potentially indicates the degree of shifts in the predictive power of environmental factors for plant diversity. In sum, we suggest that environmental variables, which are highly structured over space, should be the target of special attention and care in future modeling attempts aiming to predict the spatial patterns of plant species diversity in coastal dunes. Abstract: The paper presents the use of indicators in a site-specific assessment method for strategic environmental assessment in regional land use planning (here: SEA-REP). It is explained with the example of the state of environment indicator ‘LUCCA 4—Urban Areas at Risk of Flooding’, how SEA as a decision-aiding instrument can contribute to the prevention of conflicts with policy for adaptation to climate change. The method begins with the determination of impact factors for SEA. In the presented study, the physical impact factors of land consumption, land use change, and directed flooding were recognised. A core problem during the selection of indicators for land uses for the adaptation to climate change (here: LUCCA) and the derivation of assessment thresholds was a lack of region-wide policy objectives for the protection of land and resources. Therefore, in a second step, regional environmental orientation objectives were derived from national and EU environmental policy. A standard method for the selection of LUCCA indicators and the derivation of assessment thresholds for conflict analysis is described. Three classes of conflict classification for regional plan designations on the individual site are proposed. It is recommended that future adaptation measures of regional land use planning should be designations of specific land uses as priority areas for urban areas prone to flood risk. Energy production is fundamental to modern lifestyles and living standards, and as the quality of life grows, so does the demand for energy. But at the same time, an increased demand for energy has many negative effects, such as climate change and global temperature rise caused by increased carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere. In addition, high levels of energy use results in greater depletion of fossil fuels, oil, or natural gas. To avoid these problems, many countries are closely monitoring their energy intensity and implementing the politics and tools for its improvement. This paper aims to perform a quantitative evaluation of the energy economic and environmental performance of the EU countries using the TOPSIS techniques as one of the MCDM methods to find the most desirable alternative(s) from a set of available alternatives versus the selected criteria. Based on seven indicators weighted by the Coefficient of Variance, we have comprehensively evaluated the energy economic and environmental performance of the EU countries. Among other things, we noted the strong dominance of Sweden throughout the period under review and have recorded significant improvement progress in the overall assessment of Luxembourg. One of our conclusions is that it is not possible to combine the absolute change in the CV-TOPSIS result with a change in the overall placement, which, in addition to its own progress, reflects the progress of the whole group of subjects under analysis.
