Conventional nature conservation has attempted to protect biodiversity, ecological integrity (i.e., composition and biomass/abundance of native species), and ecosystem services in parallel, assuming generally positive relationships among them. However, many native species are potentially weakened by and maladapted to a new, warmer climate. Such native species may not be able to offer ecosystem services at previous levels. If the relationship between ecosystem services and native species is no longer positive due to climate change, pursuing ecological integrity could be ineffective for maximizing ecosystem services. Hence, there is room to investigate future relationships among biodiversity, ecological integrity, and ecosystem services. This investigation can be done by describing the changes in ecosystem services as a function of biodiversity and ecological integrity. Herein, biodiversity and ecological integrity can be expressed by phylogenetic diversity and species intactness indices based on abundance, respectively. According to my hypothetical figure, the metrics of biodiversity and ecological integrity are potentially not positively but rather negatively related to ecosystem services. The hypothetical figure can be examined and improved using three different approaches: computer simulations (e.g., the LANDIS‐II forest simulation model), collection of actual data (e.g., measuring ecosystem services of some sites with psychrophilic and thermophilic species), and questionnaire surveys about cultural services (e.g., using digitally manipulated photographs and generative adversarial networks). Tropical rainforests in Southeast Asia dominated by Dipterocarpaceae show a unique reproductive event, general flowering. This paper records long‐term seed production of a tropical rainforest in Pasoh Forest Reserve, Peninsular Malaysia. Study site is a lowland dipterocarp forest dominated by Dipterocarpaceae and Fabaceae. Seed and other litter production data are essential for analyzing general flowering and evaluating net primary production (NPP) of rainforest ecosystems under climate change. Unfortunately, there is a lack of long‐term litter production data in Dipterocarp forests. This paper presents such a long‐term litter data from 1992 to 2017. We collected litter samples every month from May 1992 to December 2017 in Pasoh F.R., Peninsular Malaysia (2°59′N, 102°18′E, 120–152 m a.s.l.). Litter was collected using 100 litter traps spaced evenly within a 2‐ha core area of the 6‐ha study plot. Each litter trap was made of 1 mm mesh with a circular area of 0.5 m2 from May 8, 1992 to December 22, 1998. Then litter trap was changed to a square type with 4 mm mesh until now. Litter samples were collected and separated to leaf, flower, seed and others (debris). After sorting litter samples were dried at 85°C for 48 hr and weighed. Seeds and flowers were separated according to tentative morphological types and identified. This data paper contains two data sets. Litter data set contains weight of each litter fractions. Seed data set contains number and weight of morphological seed types and identified scientific name. This data paper introduces a data set of quantitative records, including biomass (wet and dry weight), cover, shoot density and shoot length, of habitat‐forming seaweeds (temperate kelps and fucoids) collected at 400 sites (2,115 sampling points) of a warm‐to‐cold temperate zone of the Japanese coast from 1957 to 2013. The data set includes 8,885 occurrence records of 58 species, extracted from 64 literature sources, most of which were written in local language. The data set compiled the quantitative records of seaweeds at each study site, each year and each month; the geographical location; the vertical distribution and the scientific names. Furthermore, one supporting data set was added that included the name of the corresponding literature list. The data set was formatted as Darwin Core and its extension, "Sample‐based Data." Scientific names were updated to ones that are currently accepted based on Algaebase (http://www.algaebase.org). A comprehensive distribution (presence and absence) data set of Japanese habitat‐forming seaweeds has been published (Kumagai et al., 2016, Ecological Research 31:759), which covers geographic distribution and the associated long‐term changes in seaweeds found in Japanese temperate and subtropical zones. Here, this data set focuses more on changes in seaweed quantity according to season and depth. This rich data set can be used to analyze the seasonal, long‐term changes and spatial differences in the biomass and community structure of habitat‐forming seaweeds along the Japanese coast. This paper describes the species occurrence record of zooxanthellate reef‐building corals at 1047 sites on the Japanese coast, recorded from 1929 to 2017. The dataset includes 484 confirmed scientific species names compiled from 152 literature sources, most of which were written in Japanese and published as gray literature in local journals or individual reports. Scientific names were consolidated under currently accepted nomenclature based on the World Register of Marine Species. Further revision of species names was made by referring to monographs on temperate coral species of Japan, along with expert knowledge. The dataset includes the coral species recorded each year at each study site, the geographical location of each site, and the scientific names of the corals. Three supporting datasets were created, containing a list of literature, the names of the sites and synonymization and confirmation of the coral names. This up‐to‐date collection of data is a contribution to the study of coral biogeography and conservation planning, as well as long‐term changes in coral species distributions in response to climate change. Long‐term climate monitoring by universities provides fundamental data for various disciplines in the natural sciences. Kyoto University once managed 10 university forest stations and is currently managing five. At these stations, climate data have been monitored almost since the establishment of each station until today, with the exception of the stations in foreign countries. We compiled and report the monthly climate data at these forest stations from the start of monitoring until December 2018. These data are important for investigating environmental changes in East Asia, including China (Taiwan), South Korea (Chosen) and Russia (Sakhalin, Karafuto) over the last 100 years. Long‐term monitoring often involves minor and major changes in the monitoring procedures, devices and even monitoring sites due to unavoidable circumstances, such as technological advances, changes in standard methods and climatic and anthropogenic disasters. Therefore, associated metadata on the monitoring methods are also important. We also compiled metadata on changes in monitoring methods. In addition, to examine the effects of changes in the methods on the observed climate data, we compared the values recorded before and after the change for each climate variable at each monitoring site. Methodological changes affected only a few variables, with the exception of humidity. Careful interpretation may be required when a researcher uses humidity data in any analysis. The biodiversity of temperate grasslands can change considerably as a result of social and climate change. We have compiled information from published studies and created a database of Japanese semi‐natural grassland flora, which contains databases of flora of each grassland, grassland locations, and management methods. This database is useful as a basis for the analysis of changes in the flora of Japanese grasslands as well as for future monitoring. The present study was conducted to predict the current and future potential distribution of a tree species Pterocarpus marsupium Roxb. in Ranchi, Eastern India using ecological niche modeling. Nine environmental variables comprising of isothermality, precipitation of wettest and warmest quarter, annual temperature range, soil type, human influence index, elevation, slope and land use cover were used to model the distribution of the species. Climatic variables governed the predicted distribution of the species as they contributed 56.7% as compared to the other nonclimatic variables (43.3%). Northern parts exhibited the most suitable niche of the species as compared to south‐east and central parts that showed low probability of occurrence due to high disturbances caused by rapid urbanization as well as over exploitation of the species for timber, edible and medicinal uses. The average test area under the receiver operating curve (AUC) (0.921) as well as the partial AUC indicated good model performance. The projected change scenarios of RCP2.6, RCP4.5 and RCP6.0 for the year 2050 reveal that the climatically suitable areas will be drastically reduced in Ranchi. The population of the species is declining due to its exploitation from natural habitats for timber and medicinal uses and is listed as near‐threatened by the current IUCN‐Red lists. The findings of this paper will help to identify the potential habitats for further conservation of this near‐threatened species in the changing climatic conditions and increasing anthropogenic pressure. Arctic terrestrial ecosystems near the treeline in river lowlands are vulnerable to the changing climate and seasonal extreme events, including flooding. We set up a simple camera monitoring system to record the timings and durations of the leafy period and the spring flush of river water at three observation sites (Boydom [B]: 70.64°N, 148.15°E; Kodac [K]:70.56°N, 148.26°E; Verkhny‐Khatistakh [VK]:70.25°N,147.47°E) in the Indigirka lowland, in Northeastern Siberia. Time‐lapse digital cameras were located at seven points across the three sites. The time intervals were 1–4 or 24 hours. The minimum and maximum monitoring periods were 2 years (July 2016 to August 2018) at B and 5 years (August 2013 to July 2018) at K. One camera documented the timings of river ice melt and open water periods from the riverbank of the Kryvaya River, one of the small tributaries of the Indigirka River. The other six cameras recorded several types of ground cover typical of the area, including larch trees (Larix cajanderi), shrubs (including Salix spp. and Betula nana), forbs, mosses and graminoids in an ecosystem of sparsely forested shrublands, wetlands and riversides. The data consists of 45,617 JPEG‐format images. This dataset can be used to detect the onset and offset of the growing season and to capture the ice melt timing and water cover periods in wetlands and riversides. It may be useful in validating satellite data such as the vegetation remote sensing index for remote and little‐known areas. These data may contribute to the study of the role of high‐latitude ecosystems in global climate changes. Thailand is recognized as having high species richness both flora and fauna. The systematic plant taxonomy and collection was initiated in 1957–1958. However, the distribution of specimen collections is uneven and mainly located near road networks. The Royal Forest Department (RFD) has since 2001 initiated the systematic uniformly fixed grids of 20 km × 20 km for measuring trees and their environments with the financial and technical support from the International Tropical Timber Organization. After the reorganization of the RFD in 2002, the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation of Thailand, which then was separated from the RFD, has carried on this project and added the uniformly fixed grids ranging from 2.5 km × 2.5 km to 10 km × 10 km over the entire protected areas in Thailand. Throughout three project phases (2001–present), there are over 3,150 plots collected from 59 provinces, while the remaining 18 provinces do not have monitoring plots because of either the security issue or no forest covers. There were, based on altogether 24,605 occurrence records of trees with a diameter greater than 4.5 cm at breath high level from 363 species from 81 families and 222 genera. Trees belong to Dipterocarpaceae, Lamiaceae, Burseraceae, Phyllanthaceae, Malvaceae and Fabaceae families are dominant. Besides for simple estimation of tree density and volume, the data were used for bio‐geographical and climate change impact studies. There are growing needs to broaden and deepen our multi-faceted understanding of the ecosystems, and the networks of Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) can play significant roles in fostering and applying ecosystem studies at regional and global scales. The International LTER Network (ILTER) is organized as a global network of field research sites and scientists to address current ecological issues such as biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation within a globally changing environment. The ILTER East Asia-Pacific Regional Network (ILTER-EAP) is one of the four constituent ILTER regional networks. Since 1995, ILTER-EAP has been developed to promote data sharing, research collaborations and capability building in the science and to bridge gaps between societal needs and scientific imperatives on concerns in the Asia-Pacific Region. Currently, ILTER-EAP comprises nine formal ILTER members and two associate networks. Their activities involve long-term and multiple-site observations of structural, functional and developmental aspects of ecosystems, data sharing, and bridging society and ecological science. This paper presents a review of the activities of ILTER-EAP, focusing on its: (1) vision and the development following its inception, (2) scientific activities and major outputs related to selected thematic areas, (3) contributions from ILTER-EAP to the international initiatives, and (4) future challenges and opportunities relating to its development and role in facilitating regional and global research collaborations. Accordingly, regional research questions were identified that could be most effectively addressed by opening up a common research platform, integrated data management system and the network science, which is open to all interested parties. This paper describes the flora of habitat-forming seaweeds (fucoids and temperate kelps) at 7673 sites of the Japanese coast encompassing its warm to cold temperate zone, recorded from 1887 to 2014. The data set includes 86 species (21,168 presence and 20,845 absence records), compiled from 355 literature sources, most of which were written in Japanese and published as grey literature in local journals or individual reports. Scientific names were consolidated under currently-accepted nomenclature based on Algaebase (). The data set compiled the seaweed flora at each study site each year, the geographical location and the scientific names. Additionally, three supporting data sets were created respectively including name of each site, synonyms of the seaweeds, and the corresponding literature list. This data paper reports litter fall data collected in a network of 21 forest sites in Japan. This is the largest litter fall data set freely available in Japan to date. The network is a part of the Monitoring Sites 1000 Project launched by the Ministry of the Environment, Japan. It covers subarctic to subtropical climate zones and the four major forest types in Japan. Twenty-three permanent plots in which usually 25 litter traps were installed were established in old-growth or secondary natural forests. Litter falls were collected monthly from 2004, and sorted into leaves, branches, reproductive structures and miscellaneous. The data provide seasonal patterns and inter-annual dynamics of litter falls, and their geographical patterns, and offer good opportunities for meta-analyses and comparative studies among forests. The evergreen oak Quercus glauca often dominates secondary broadleaved forests in Western Japan. It is regarded as a mid-successional species, whose diameter and height growth fall between those of early- and late-successional species. Despite the ecological importance of this evergreen oak in the secondary succession of the evergreen broadleaved forest zone in Japan, tree-felling data that allow estimations of tree mass and leaf area from non-destructive measurements are lacking. This paper provides stem growth data, read from tree rings on disks sampled from 13 Q. glauca stems, and their allometric data. The samples were collected in 1994 from the Ginkakuji-san National Forest, Kyoto City, Japan. Allometric data comprised data on stem age, diameter at breast height, diameter at 10% height, tree height, height of the lowest living branch, height of the lowest living leaf in the crown, volume of the main stem, squared stem diameter just below the lowest living branch, total leaf area of the stem, dry weight of the total leaves, dry weight of all branches, dry weight of the main stem, total aboveground dry weight, mean relative photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) above the crown, mean relative PPFD below the crown, crown projection area, and specific leaf area. These data can be helpful for estimating the biomass and leaf area index of a Q. glauca stand by enabling the derivation of allometric relationships between non-destructive measurements (such as stem diameter at breast height, and tree height) and tree mass or leaf area. Diameters (including bark thickness) at ground height and above (at 0.5- or 1-m intervals) for each stem are also provided. Stem growth data were based on tree-ring reads from disks taken from heights of 0.0 and 0.3 m, and at 0.5-m (stem height <7 m) or 1.0-m (stem height ≥7 m) intervals above that. Stem volume growth derived from these tree-ring data can be converted into stem mass growth if combined with an analysis of the allometric data, which may serve as a useful resource for the estimation of carbon fixation by evergreen oaks in relation to global climate change. The wetland ecosystem is particularly vulnerable to hydrological and climate changes. The Great Xing'an Mountain is such a region in China that has a large area of wetlands with rare human disturbance. The predictions of the global circulation model CGCM3 (the third-generation coupled global climate model from the Canadian Centre for Climate Modeling and Analysis) indicated that the temperature in The Great Xing'an Mountain will rise by 2-4°C over the next 100 years. This paper predicts the potential distributions of wetlands in this area under the current and warming climate conditions. This predication was performed by the Random Forests model, with 18 environmental variables, which will reflect the climate and topography conditions. The model has been proven to have a great prediction ability. The wetland distributions are primarily topography-driven in the Great Xing'an Mountains. Mean annual temperature, warmness index, and potential evapotranspiration ratio are the most important climatic factors in wetland distributions. The model predictions for three future climate scenarios show that the wetland area tends to decrease, and higher emission will also cause more drastic shrinkage of wetland distributions. About 30% of the wetland area will disappear by 2050. The area will decrease 62.47, 76.90, and 85.83%, respectively, under CGCM3-B1, CGCM3-A1B, and CGCM3-A2 by 2100. As for spatial allocation, wetlands may begin to disappear from the sides to the center and south to north under a warming climate. Under CGCM3-B1, the loss of wetlands may mainly occur in the south hills with flatter terrain, and some may occur in the north hills and intermontane plains. Mountains occupy 24% of the global land surface area and are home to 12% of the world’s population. They have ecological, aesthetic, and socioeconomic significance, not only for people living in mountain areas, but for those living beyond. Mountains need specific attention for their contribution to global goods and services, especially by developing and implementing mountain specific policies. Conservation policies have evolved from the protection of charismatic species, to habitat and ecosystem/landscape conservation, and, finally, to people-oriented conservation approaches. This paper, with particular reference to paradigm shifts in the Hindu Kush-Himalayan (HKH) region, discusses the evolution of conservation policies, developments in conservation practices, the status of protected area management, wetland conservation initiatives and the landscape approach, community-based conservation initiatives, and the convergence of policies and practices. In the HKH region, conservation efforts now adopt participatory approaches, implement policies of decentralised governance for biodiversity management, and empower local communities in biodiversity management. The paradigm shift in the policies and practices related to conservation has been gradual and has included the acceptance of communities as an integral part of national level conservation initiatives, together with the integration of many global conventions. There are many successful pilots in the HKH region that deserve upscaling by the countries from the region. Realising the importance of mountains as hotspots of biodiversity, and due to their role as providers of global goods and services, the Convention on Biological Diversity adopted the Programme of Work on Mountain Biodiversity. Such a decision specific to mountains provides enormous opportunities for both conservation and development. Recent challenges posed by climate change need to be integrated into overall biodiversity conservation and management agendas, especially in mountain areas. The HKH region has been identified as a blank spot for data by the Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change, indicating the need to develop regional database and sharing mechanisms. This is a tall task, but one that holds enormous opportunity for the HKH countries and institutions with regional mandates to address the emerging challenges of climate change on biodiversity conservation by reducing scientific uncertainty. In the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem of East Africa, the migrating wildebeests’ ( Connochaetes taurinus) response to food resource distribution and terrain complexity impacts their movement characteristics. This manifests in varying ways such as movement speed, direction, turning frequency, and moving distance. To investigate these characteristics, indices derived from vegetation quantity (normalized difference vegetation index, NDVI) and relief (slope) were used in our previous work to quantify the relationships between migration route location versus vegetation, relief complexity, and their combination. Least cost pathways determined using these indices were representative of approximate migration routes. The simulated routes were shown to be strongly influenced by vegetation during the dry season. However the impact of climatic change (rainfall) on route location was not investigated though known to influence vegetation recovery patterns. This paper specifically addresses the impact of climatic change on route location. The mean monthly rainfall data were used to classify the rainy and dry seasons in the Serengeti, the Western, and the Mara areas as normal, drier, or wetter than normal, over the 1986–1997 period. The classification is based on the mean monthly rainfall variability about the 11-year seasonal mean. Regression analysis showed strong linear relationships between rainfall and mean NDVI for each one of the three areas. The subsequent seasonal classification based on the corresponding habitat vegetation characteristics (NDVI) revealed the relative variation of vegetation with rainfall. Using the derived general categories, migration routes are then predicted for the various categories using a “route attractivity index.” The seasonal migration routes were shown to change depending on the relative abundance of the rainfall during the dry season. Dry season migration routes tended toward areas with better vegetation activity, i.e., those characterized by higher NDVI gradients. Our results showed that during the western trek, wetter dry seasons have the effect of delaying the herds movement northwestward. During the northern trek, wetter dry seasons have the effect of delaying the tendency to move westward. However the variation in rainfall conditions during the rainy and dry season had no significant influence on the southern trek route location. We assume that predicted routes based on average general category conditions for different years are representative of main migration route patterns for similar seasons, therefore they are well suited for approximate route prediction, if the climatic characteristics of the year are known. Changes in both the environment and environmental research have led to the development of new protocols and approaches. These new approaches consider both the effects of changes in the global environment on living organisms (i.e. the responses of ecosystems to environmental processes) and the feedback responses of these organisms and ecosystems (i.e. the effects of living organisms on the environment). The present paper focuses on pelagic food webs in aquatic ecosystems. We examine three major effects of global environmental changes on aquatic organisms: (i) the release of pollutants and biological agents in lakes and nearshore marine waters; (ii) the loss of biodiversity and the collapse of commercially exploited resources that were heretofore renewable. We develop detailed examples of the effects of human activities on marine organisms (i.e. the effects of nutrient supply on the structure of pelagic food webs in marine systems. Finally, we examine (iii) the food-web-controlled exchanges of CO2 between the atmosphere and the ocean, as a feedback effect of pelagic ecosystems on the global environment with respect to the ongoing climate change. We report long-term continuous phenological and sky images taken by time-lapse cameras through the Phenological Eyes Network (http://www.pheno-eye.org. Accessed 29 May 2018) in various ecosystems from the Arctic to the tropics. Phenological images are useful in recording the year-to-year variability in the timing of flowering, leaf-flush, leaf-coloring, and leaf-fall and detecting the characteristics of phenological patterns and timing sensitivity among species and ecosystems. They can also help interpret variations in carbon, water, and heat cycling in terrestrial ecosystems, and be used to obtain ground-truth data for the validation of satellite-observed products. Sky images are useful in continuously recording atmospheric conditions and obtaining ground-truth data for the validation of cloud contamination and atmospheric noise present in satellite remote-sensing data. We have taken sky, forest canopy, forest floor, and shoot images of a range of tree species and landscapes, using time-lapse cameras installed on forest floors, towers, and rooftops. In total, 84 time-lapse cameras at 29 sites have taken 8 million images since 1999. Our images provide (1) long-term, continuous detailed records of plant phenology that are more quantitative than in situ visual phenological observations of index trees; (2) basic information to explain the responsiveness, vulnerability, and resilience of ecosystem canopies and their functions and services to changes in climate; and (3) ground-truthing for the validation of satellite remote-sensing observations. Cryptomeria japonica is a very important and useful forestry tree in Japan and there are vast areas of plantation area that occupy 44% of the total man‐made forest in the country. Natural populations have declined as a result of logging and overexploitation for more than a thousand years. The natural distribution of C. japonica is from Aomori Prefecture to Kagoshima Prefecture and it has adapted to widely different environments in Japan. In China, the variety C. japonica var. sinensis is distributed. The genetic diversity is higher in Japanese Cryptomeria than in the Chinese variety, and within Japan, western populations have higher genetic diversity than northern populations. Genetic structure of C. japonica within Japan was clear, with isolation by distance (IBD), and the omote‐sugi on the Pacific Ocean side and ura‐sugi group on the Sea of Japan side were clearly separated by STRUCTURE analysis. Genetic structure was also clear in the Chinese population but there was no IBD, which suggested considerable human disturbance in the past. Local adaption is apparent in this species, in, for example, morphological traits among the three groups such as omote‐sugi, ura‐sugi, and Chinese population. The time of divergence among the three groups was at least before last glacial maximum. Global climate change largely affects species distributions and local adaptation, which play important roles in adaptation and speciation. Global climate changes of rising temperature are threatening food security by causing desertification in many arid and semi‐arid regions. Morpho‐physiological adaptations in xero‐halophytes under extreme conditions such as high temperature, drought, and salinity could provide information for producing more resilient cash crops. This study examined seasonal variations in growth, photosynthesis, antioxidant defense, water, and ion relations of the xero‐halophyte Salsola drummondii in its natural habitat. The resistance of Sa. drummondii to seasonal alterations was related to plant interactions with soil and atmosphere. Leaf succulence, organic weight, photosynthesis, water use efficiency, compatible solutes, and antioxidant enzyme activities correlated well with precipitation, soil moisture, and electrical conductivity. Photosynthesis and stomatal conductance increased during the monsoon period with low vapor pressure deficit and moderate temperature. Sa. drummondii responded to reduced water availability by decreasing leaf succulence, xylem pressure, and osmotic potentials like a typical C4 plant displaying water and energy‐saving seasonal adjustment. C4 mode of photosynthesis, higher antioxidant enzyme activities, and accumulation of compatible solutes could be involved in protection against photo‐oxidative stress. This study highlights the importance of physiological and biochemical adaptations of Sa. drummondii to seasonal alterations in a salt desert and could serve as a model for future crop development in arid‐saline habitats. Asian dusts, yellow sand, or dust and sand storms (DSS) in Asian continent are the end products of desertification, which became a regional environmental problem being aggravated by time. It is closely related to an issue of sustainability in the region. As the desertification is caused not only by natural factors, such as the climate change, strong wind, and low precipitation, but also by rapidly increasing human activities, such as overgrazing, misuse of water resources, and irrational land use, it is urgent to make efforts to combat desertification in Asian continent including China. In this regard, it is necessary to consider socio-economic aspects as well as ecological aspects and, consequently, the project for the construction of a Demonstration Model Village for eco-environmental rehabilitation should be paid to a special attention. The authors deal with this regional issue in consideration of three Es, which are represented by ecology, economy, and environment in providing the perspectives in sound approach to the issue. We investigated how the densities of birds in the post‐breeding and autumn phase (hereafter called autumn) were changing and how they were influenced by a changing climate in a study region that experienced about 5 months of snow cover each winter and summer temperatures that varied greatly from year to year. Bird densities during autumn were estimated between 1991 and 2018 using distance sampling along transects. Densities were compared to various temperature variables in preceding months and to densities in the following winter. The study region has experienced rapid temperature change in May–August, and autumn densities of six of the nine studied species increased significantly during the study period. Autumn densities of all but one bird species were significantly related to one or more of the temperatures in the preceding January–February, affecting adult survival, and in the preceding May–August, affecting nestling survival. Long‐term trends of autumn densities and densities in the first half of winter were similar for practically all bird species. The results of our study of seasonal dynamics based on eight‐month intervals in each of the 28 years of research emphasize that understanding the influence of climatic parameters on changes in the density of individual bird species requires such long‐term monitoring throughout the year. In a period of climate warming, and in spite of the severity of the winter and the variability of summer, we found that most species of birds showed a clear increase in density. The increased availability of global scale environmental and biological data is enabling more objective, data‐driven, classifications of the oceans. However, comparisons of seasonal differences at a global scale have been limited to ocean color and derived variables. Here, we used long‐term averages of 18 ocean variables in summer and winter to classify the seasonal ocean surface waters through principle components analysis and k‐means clustering. We identified 11 distinct areas that fit the definition of "ecosystems," which is enduring regions demarcated by environmental characteristics. Overall, the "ecosystems" retained their general distribution with latitude boundaries in each season, while there were some variations in latitude and some more complex differences. Of all the variables, temperature had the greatest importance and correlated with many other variables in both seasons. Some variables had uniquely significant effects on the classification in both seasons as well, such as calcite, land distance, depth, and surface current. Thus while the present seasonal classification is robust for available data, future analyses with variables not presently available may improve it. Nevertheless, the results indicate that species will need to either move or have adapted to live in greater ecosystem variation in mid temperature and subtropical latitudes where ecosystem boundaries move seasonally. The family Dipterocarpaceae, along with species from many other families, flower synchronously at irregular intervals of several years in the extensive humid forests of Southeast Asia. The intermittent mast seeding in these forests satiates seed predators whose populations remain low due to starvation in non masting periods, effectively increasing seed survival and seedling recruitment. A previous study demonstrated that a synergistic interaction between drought and cool temperatures, instead of either climate factor alone, best explains the occurrence of general flowering events observed over 14 years at the Pasoh Research Forest, Malaysia. However, several measures of drought were proposed and which drought measure should be used to explain general flowering remains untested. Here we examined the relationship between flowering of five Shorea species and three drought indices, the difference between the mean daily accumulation of precipitation and a threshold level of precipitation, water deficit and antecedent precipitation index. Our analyses confirmed that for most of Shorea species we studied the synergistic model that considers both cool temperature and drought performs the best regardless of the choice of drought index. In addition, a simplest drought measure using cumulative precipitation is sufficient to explain flowering activities in Shorea species. Climate change projections in southern Africa show a drier and a warmer future climate. It is not yet clear how these changes are going to affect the suitable habitat of bush encroacher woody species in southern African savannas. Maximum Entropy niche modelling technique was used to test the extent to which climate change is likely to affect the suitable habitat of Vachellia karroo in Zimbabwe based on six Global Climate Models (GCMs) from Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) and two Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) for the 2070s. An overlay analysis was then performed in a Geographic Information System based on the current and future bioclimatically suitable areas for the respective GCMs and RCPs. This was done to determine the potential effect of climate change on the focal species. Results show that temperature related variables are more important in explaining the spatial distribution of V. karroo than precipitation related variables. In addition, results indicate an overall increase in the modelled suitable habitat for V. karroo by the 2070s across the GCMs and RCPs considered in this study. Specifically, the suitable habitat of V. Karroo is projected to increase by a maximum of 57,594 km2 signifying a 69% increase from the current suitable habitat (83,674 km2). The suitable areas are projected to increase in eastern, western and south eastern parts of Zimbabwe. These results imply that improved understanding of the response of woody species to a changing climate is important for managing bush encroachment in savanna ecosystems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent studies on climate change have reported serious impacts on winter forest birds in Western Europe. However, in areas where climate change has caused milder winters and more stable conditions in summer, one would expect resident bird populations to increase, rather than to decrease in winter. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of climate change on the population dynamics of ten species of Passeriformes in the Tartarstan Republic, Russia. Ravkin’s transect method was used to census fixed randomly selected plots spread over a large geographic area at least once every month for the past 26 years. Observers remained the same over the whole period. The abundance of nine species in the first half of the winter and four species in the second half of the winter showed significant increases during the study period. Unlike studies from countries in Western Europe, there were no significant decreases in these species. Significant changes in winter conditions, as well as during the breeding season, and an overall increase in annual temperatures are likely reasons for a significant increase in the number of birds in winter. Greater winter survival, an increase in the survival rate of fledglings and juveniles during the summer, and later onset of winter, are very important determinants of the winter population. Our findings show that numbers of birds in late winter are related to the severity of winter conditions. An anomalous reduction in tree growth indices has been detected in tree ring records from many circumpolar northern latitude sites in recent years, which was known as the divergence phenomenon. In order to understand whether the divergence phenomenon appeared at altitudinal treelines in east edge of Tibetan Plateau, we analyzed the correlation coefficients between tree growth and climate variables before and after recent climate warming, respectively. The results showed that divergence phenomenon took place and varied with sites. Compared with those in 1955-1982, the correlation coefficient of growth to mean temperature in June declined during 1983-2012. In Songpan site, more than half of the sampled trees showed an increasing positive correlation with temperature from July to September, while others turned to be a negative correlation. The positive responses to the mean temperature in previous-year November and December declined in Markang site. Only in Miyaluo site, the positive correlation between tree ring index and temperature from July to September increased. Both the anomalous reduction or disappearance of the responses to the mean temperature and the divergent growth responses suggested that the divergence phenomenon was universal at altitudinal treelines in east edge of Tibetan Plateau, which had potentially significant influences on the estimation of forest productivity and climatic reconstructions based on tree ring. Water resources support more than 60 million people in the Lower Mekong Basin (LMB) and are important for food security-especially rice production-and economic security. This study aims to quantify water yield under near- and long-term climate scenarios and assess the potential impacts on rice cultivation. The InVEST model (Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs) forecasted water yield, and land evaluation was used to delineate suitability classes. Pattern-downscaled climate data were specially generated for the LMB. Predicted annual water yields for 2030 and 2060, derived from a drier overall scenario in combination with medium and high greenhouse gas emissions, indicated a reduction of 9-24% from baseline (average 1986-2005) runoff. In contrast, increased seasonality and wetter rainfall scenarios increased annual runoff by 6-26%. Extreme drought decreased suitability of transplanted rice cultivation by 3%, and rice production would be reduced by 4.2 and 4%, with and without irrigation projects, relative to baseline. Greatest rice reduction was predicted for Thailand, followed by Lao PDR and Cambodia, and was stable for Vietnam. Rice production in the LMB appears sufficient to feed the LMB population in 2030, while rice production in Lao PDR and Cambodia are not expected to be sufficient for domestic consumption, largely due to steep topography and sandy soils as well as drought. Global environmental change is increasingly affecting species worldwide. One of the emblematic casualties among plants in several European countries is common juniper ( Juniperus communis). Many populations of common juniper throughout its distribution range are declining. The relative lack of viable seed production, resulting in low probabilities for successful natural regeneration, is one of the main reasons for this decline. Climate warming and elevated atmospheric depositions have been shown to negatively affect seed viability of common juniper, but our understanding of the underlying mechanisms remains scarce. One possible pathway is via changes in the plant nutrient status that, in turn, may affect seed viability. Here we took advantage of large-scale gradients in climate and atmospheric depositions between central Sweden and northern Spain, and analysed foliar nutrient concentrations and stoichiometry and seed viability in 20 juniper populations spread across Europe. Our results show that increasing temperatures can negatively affect needle N and P concentrations while enhanced potentially acidifying depositions resulted in lower foliar N and Ca concentrations. Needle C:N ratios increased with higher temperature, acidifying depositions and precipitation. By linking these patterns to seed viability, we found that low needle P, Ca and Mg concentrations were related to low seed viability. Thus, a shortage of these key elements during seed development and seed nutrient storage, can lead to anomalies and seed abortion. Understanding changes in plant diversity is important with changing climate in desert ecosystems. We analyzed the changes in species richness and plant functional types in different landscape positions and species turnover between five sub-regions of the Gurbantünggüt Desert, China, from 2009 to 2013. We also analyzed how species density, richness, and plant functional types responded to annual precipitation, mean annual temperature, and the coefficient of variation ( C) of both daily precipitation and monthly temperature, throughout this entire desert region. The results showed significant differences in the Shannon-Weiner, Evenness, and Gleason indices between the sub-regions over the 5-year study period. Species richness varied in the order of ephemeral plants > long-lived annual plants > perennial herbs > shrubs. Species richness in the lower and inter-dune area was higher than on the upper dune and on top of dunes. About 34.8 % of total species were influenced by climate change. The density of about 8.7 % of total species declined with increasing precipitation, especially the two dominant species, Haloxylon persicum and Haloxylon ammodendron. Plant richness increased significantly with increased precipitation. Ephemeral plant made the largest contribution to increasing plant diversity in the desert, while shrubs made the smallest. Ephemeral plants play an important role in maintaining plant community composition and function. In addition, species turnover declined with increasing precipitation. We suggest that differences in flora and different landscape positions in the dunes, specifically in shaping the heterogeneous microhabitats, are important reasons for the complex responses of species to climate change. In a context of climate change, ecological and physiological adaptations of organisms are of central importance for determining the outcome of niche challenges (e.g., with potential competitors) and species persistence. Typically, long-term data on free-ranging populations are needed to investigate such phenomena. Here, long-term data on a free-ranging population of western whip snakes ( Hierophis viridiflavus: Colubridae) from central Italy were used in order to test the hypothesis that snake feeding frequencies should increase in relation to climate warming, thus positively affecting individual performance because of longer annual activity period, increased daily activity and larger prey base. Data from 231 'female snake-years' of records (including inter-annual recaptures) were collected were collected between 1990 and 2014. The frequency of fed snakes varied remarkably across the study period with a significant increase over the years. There was a significant positive effect of the mean annual temperature on the percentage of fed animals, whereas there was a non-significant relationship between yearly rainfall and percentage of fed animals. There was a positive relationship between mean annual temperature and yearly diversity-of-prey index. No other climatic variables were significantly correlated with yearly diversity-of-prey index. This study supported the hypothesis that global warming may be favorable for thermophilic species (such as H. viridiflavus), as it enhances their foraging performances and hence their feeding frequencies. Identifying the factors that contribute to species distribution will help determine the impact of the changing climate on species' range contraction and expansion. Ecological niche modelling is used to analyze the present and potential future distribution of rubber trees ( Hevea brasiliensis) in two biogeographically distinct regions of India i.e., the Western Ghats (WG) and Northeast (NE). The rubber tree is an economically important plantation species, and therefore factors other than climate may play a significant role in determining its occurrence. To assist in future planning, we used the maximum entropy model to predict plausible areas for the expansion of rubber tree plantations under a changing climate scenario. Inclusion of elevation, soil and socioeconomic factors into the model did not result in a significant increase in the model accuracy estimates over the bioclimatic model (AUC > 0.92), but their effect was pronounced in the predicted probability scoring of species occurrence. Among various factors, elevation, rooting condition, village population and agricultural labour availability contributed substantially to the model in the NE region, whereas for the WG region, climate was the most important contributing factor for rubber tree distribution. We found that more areas would be suitable for rubber tree plantation in the NE region, whereas further expansion would be limited in the WG region under the projected climate scenario for 2050. Human-induced landscape changes are expected to have strong effects on the composition and structure of terrestrial small mammal communities (Orders Rodentia and Soricomorpha). However, testing such expectations is difficult due to low detectability of these animals. We used analyses of barn owl ( Tyto alba) pellets sampled in the same roosting places during 1977-1991 and again in 2011-2014 to (a) document small mammal community changes and (b) relate them to changes in land use. Forest and synanthropic small mammals increased by a 7 % between both periods, whereas open-land species decreased by 13 %. Man-made loss (crops and meadows) and expansion (forest and urban) of relevant habitat types were closely related to these changes. Localities with land use changes opposite to the general trend showed also an opposite trend in small mammal community change. Land use heterogeneity increased and dominance decreased between both sampling periods, and this pattern was paralleled by an increasing trend in diversity and a decreasing trend in dominance in small mammal communities. Decreasing trends of some generalist northern species with restricted ranges may have been due to climate change. Diet monitoring of barn owls are thus valuable tools for both documenting and analyzing fine-grained small mammal responses to global change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We hypothesized a geographical pattern of the plant performance (seedling development, biomass production, relative water content and chlorophyll content) as a result of response to the interaction between photoperiod and water availability in populations of the arctic-alpine Silene suecica from different latitudes, thus experiencing different photoperiods during the growing season. Particularly, we expected a lower drought sensitivity in northern compared to southern populations as a consequence of harsher conditions experienced by the northern populations in terms of water availability. The experiment was carried out under common garden conditions, manipulating the water availability (wet and dry) and the photoperiod (21 and 16 h). We found an interaction between photoperiod and water availability on plant height, leaves, growth, biomass and total chlorophyll. However, the photoperiod neither counteracted nor intensified the effect of drought. Plants exposed to drought compensated for decreasing water availability by reducing their shoot growth. Changes in the chlorophyll content and chlorophyll a/ b ratio were observed. Northern populations showed a higher basal growth performance and a greater response to the changed water regime (from wet to dry) than the southern populations. Southern populations showed a reduced ability to respond to drought, but their low basal performance may be advantageous under low water availability, avoiding water loss. In contrast, northern populations showed a stronger plastic response that limited the negative effects of reduced water availability. In plants, silicon (Si) accumulates in phytoliths, which can contain 0.1-6.0 % occluded organic carbon (phytolith-occluded organic carbon, PhytOC). Globally, phytolith formation has implications for the long-term terrestrial carbon balance, and thus, global climate change. In this study, we analyzed the Si contents of 108 species of plants from Inner Mongolia and Hebei, China, to demonstrate the relationships between plant Si content and various phylogenetic and ecological characteristics, and to estimate PhytOC production in the forests of north China. Variations in Si content were related to the plant's higher-level phylogenetic position, according to the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group III classification. In angiosperms, the commelinoid monocot orders accumulated substantially more Si than did the other monocot orders, and the asteroid dicot orders accumulated more Si than did the other dicot orders. In an ecological context, herbs had the highest Si content (0.47 ± 0.26 % dry weight), followed by trees (0.33 ± 0.13 % dry weight) and shrubs (0.24 ± 0.09 % dry weight). The total PhytOC production rate in the forests of north China corresponded to 0.48 ± 0.20 × 10 t CO year, approximately 44 % of which was contributed by the understory vegetation comprising herbs and shrubs. This finding indicates that the phytolith carbon sequestration potential of the forests may be further enhanced by afforestation/reforestation, preserving the understory vegetation, and maximizing the aboveground net primary productivity of all forest layers, especially herbs that accumulate high Si contents. Community processes are now undergoing substantial reconfiguration because of climate change. Although the effects of climate change on ecosystems are currently a major concern, the issues tightly associated with winter climate change have been underrepresented. Given the importance of winter climate variables and events for determining the spatial distribution of communities and their phenological and physiological responses, and the functional roles of each species, all of which are expected to substantially influence community dis/re-assemble in the future, this review focuses on the ecological responses and consequences of terrestrial communities to changing winter climate. In particular, the effects on processes supported by biological interactions are largely undetermined. In this context, focusing on plant-soil feedback as a major interactive multi-system is worthwhile; these interactions can be disentangled through careful evaluation of the functional roles of organisms involved in the feedback (i.e., plants and soil organisms). The underlying mechanisms are indeed complex because direct (i.e., changes in physical conditions) and indirect pathways (i.e., plant-mediated influences on soil-organisms and vice versa) from winter climate change influence the functionality of future ecosystems. To face these issues, the framework of response-effect-traits deserves research priority since this can define community re-organization as the accumulated responses of individual species, which determines the stability and performance of ecosystem functioning. Thus, research that quantifies functional responses and roles of organisms under a changing climate will continue to be essential for the issues of winter climate change, which may become more serious and significant in the near future.
