The article discusses the prospective loss of Amazonian rain forests associated with illegal property encroachment related to ill-defined land entitlements. Positive and negative aspects of the United Nations (UN) Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD) programme are discussed. A REDD initiative called the Juma Sustainable Development Reserve (SDR) in Amazonas State is noted. Independent of the UN, the Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve (MSDR) protects areas of rain forest called varzeas that are under water during the wet season.
