Raw materials for making dried shrimp (a type of foodstuff) are mostly from farmed shrimp and preliminary findings indicated that head copper (Cu) concentrations in some commercial dried shrimp products exceeded the safe limit specified in pollution-free aquatic products (50 mg/kg), which may influence food safety. Therefore, a 63-day feeding trial was conducted to explore effects of dietary Cu concentrations on accumulation of Cu in tissues, growth performance, immune response and antioxidant status of Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei). Moderating effect of myo-inositol (MI, adding 200 mg/kg diet) on the adverse impacts caused by excessive dietary Cu was also investigated. 600 shrimp (initial weight: 0.89 ± 0.00 g) were divided into five groups: 37.08 mg Cu/kg diet group (control group), 62.57 mg Cu/kg diet group, 125.99 mg Cu/kg diet group, 63.41 mg Cu/kg diet group (supplemented with MI) and 119.19 mg Cu/kg diet group (supplemented with MI). The results showed that dietary Cu concentrations increased from 37.08 to over 62.57 mg/kg, hepatopancreas Cu concentrations raised from 29.04 to 233.43-263.65 mg/kg, and muscle Cu concentrations only increased from 6.22 to 6.99-8.39 mg/kg. Report to control group, excessive Cu concentration (125.99 mg/kg) didn't significantly affect growth performance, but it notably reduced whole body lipid content and immune response, induced oxidative stress and damaged the hepatopancreas structure, which was ameliorated by MI supplementation. The results suggested that consuming shrimp head and its processed products weren't recommended. Cu concentrations of commercial feeds for Pacific white shrimp should be controlled below 62.57 mg/kg. Cell division cycle 37 (Cdc37) is an important cytoplasmic phosphoprotein, which usually functions as a complex with heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90), to effectively reduce the damage caused by heavy metals, such as cadmium (Cd), in aquatic animals. The high toxicity of Cd in aquatic systems generally has a deleterious effect on healthy farming of shrimps. In the present study, a novel Cdc37 gene from Penaeus monodon was identified and designated as PmCdc37. Following exposure to Cd stress, the expression levels of PmCdc37 were upregulated at the transcriptional level in both the hepatopancreas and hemolymph. RNA interference and recombinant protein injection experiments were carried out to determine the function of PmCdc37 in P. monodon following Cd exposure. To clarify the correlations between PmCdc37 and PmHsp90, the respective recombinant proteins were expressed in vitro, and the ATPase activity of PmHsp90, with or without PmCdc37, was assessed. Moreover, a pull-down assay was conducted to detect the correlation between PmCdc37 and PmHsp90. After analyzing the expression patterns of PmHsp90 following Cd challenge, whether PmHsp90 can promote the ability of PmCdc37 to resist Cd stress or not was investigated. The results showed that formation of a PmHsp90/PmCdc37 complex protected shrimp against Cd stress-induced damage. Moreover, we also confirmed that PmSOD is involved in Cd stress, and that the PmHsp90/PmCdc37 complex can regulate SOD enzymatic activity. PmSOD was involved in decreasing the MDA content in shrimp hemolymph caused by Cd stress. We concluded that during exposure to Cd, the PmHsp90/PmCdc37 complex increases SOD enzyme activity, and in turn decreases the MDA content, thereby protecting shrimp against the damage caused by Cd stress. In aquatic ecosystems, the temperature of the water is an important ecological factor that modulates aquatic organisms' metabolism, growth, development, and reproduction. In this study, the morphological, transcriptomic, and metabolomic analyses of response of Marsupeneus japonicus to acute cold stress was investigated. The results revealed that low temperature caused profound morphological damage to the hepatopancreas. Transcriptomic responses suggested that energy and primary metabolism, cytoskeleton structure, and apoptosis signaling were altered. The metabolic responses to cold stress included changes of multiple amino acids and unsaturated fatty acids. Combined transcriptomic and metabolomic data indicated that energy metabolism pathways were downregulated in the hepatopancreas under cold stress. However, M. japonicus increased ATP and unsaturated fatty acids production to ameliorate. Moreover, cold stress caused significant attenuation of macrophage apoptosis. Diazinon is one of the insecticides that represent a high risk for Costa Rican estuarine environments due to its widespread use in pineapple plantations. In estuaries, organisms are frequently submitted to stress caused by natural factors (e.g., continuous changes in salinity levels) and, additionally, to stress due to contamination. Therefore, the driving question of this study was: will organisms be more susceptible to suffer the deleterious effects caused by diazinon because of the stress resulting from the salinity changes? The estuarine shrimp Penaeus vannamei was used as the model organism and two responses were measured: osmoregulation (the physiological effect after a forced and continuous 24 h-exposure) and avoidance [the behavioural effect after a short (3 h) non-forced, multi-compartmented exposure]. Juveniles were exposed to diazinon (0.1, 1, 10 and 100 μg/L) at three different salinities (10, 20 and 30). Disruption in the capacity to regulate the haemolymph osmotic pressure was observed at a salinity of 30 in individuals exposed to diazinon and methanol (used as vehicle). At that salinity, the ability of shrimps to detect and avoid the highest diazinon concentrations was impaired. P. vannamei juveniles inhabit environments with a high variation in salinity, but with an optimum osmotic point close to a salinity of 20; therefore, the higher the salinity, the greater the vulnerability of shrimps to the effects of diazinon. Neonicotinoid insecticides, including imidacloprid, are increasingly being used to control insect pests in agricultural and urban areas, and are often detected in aquatic environments. The effects of neonicotinoids on non-target insects have been investigated with respect to behavioural, biochemical, physiological and population-level responses, but information of their effects on crustaceans is limited. This study investigated the adverse effects of both acute and chronic exposure to sublethal concentrations of imidacloprid on the nutritional quality of adult Black Tiger Shrimp (Penaeus monodon). Shrimp were continually exposed to imidacloprid in water (5 μg L -1 and 30 μg L -1 ), or through their food (12.5 μg g -1 and 75 μg g -1 ), for the entire exposure period. Imidacloprid concentrations in water and residues in tissues were quantified using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry after solid-phase extraction and QuEChER extraction respectively. Within 4 days, shrimp accumulated imidacloprid at up to 0.350 μg imidacloprid per g body weight from water and food exposure. Chronic exposure resulted in a significant decrease in body weight and total lipid content. Fatty acid composition in exposed shrimp was modified relative to controls. Shrimps can accumulate environmental toxicants and suffer behavioral changes. However, methods to quantitatively detect changes in the behavior of these shrimps are still needed. The present study aims to verify whether mathematical and fractal methods applied to video tracking can adequately describe changes in the locomotion behavior of shrimps exposed to low concentrations of toxic chemicals, such as 0.15µgL -1 deltamethrin pesticide or 10µgL -1 mercuric chloride. Results showed no change after 1min, 4, 24, and 48h of treatment. However, after 72 and 96h of treatment, both the linear methods describing the track length, mean speed, mean distance from the current to the previous track point, as well as the non-linear methods of fractal dimension (box counting or information entropy) and multifractal analysis were able to detect changes in the locomotion behavior of shrimps exposed to deltamethrin. Analysis of angular parameters of the track points vectors and lacunarity were not sensitive to those changes. None of the methods showed adverse effects to mercury exposure. Ammonia (un-ionized plus ionized ammonia as nitrogen), the end product of protein catabolism, is produced by decomposing organic matter. In aquaculture, shrimp are commonly exposed to high concentrations of ammonia that induces immunological and histological changes. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects on hemolymph coagulation time, transglutaminase (TG) activity as well as TG and clottable protein (CP) genes expressions in Litopenaeus vannamei when exposed to ambient ammonia-nitrogen (N) at 0, 1, 5, and 10mg/L for 0, 2, and 7 days. The actual concentrations in control and tests solution were 0.001, 1.15, 5.11, and 11.68mg/L for ammonia-N, and 7×10(-5), 0.080, 0.357, and 0.815mg/L for NH3-N (unionized ammonia). Delayed coagulation time following exposure to 5 and 10mg/L of ambient ammonia-N for 7 days, and increased transglutaminase (TG) activity following exposure to 5 and 1mg/L of ambient ammonia-N for 2 and 7 days, respectively, were observed. Downregulated TG expression and upregulated clottable protein (CP) expression in the hemocytes of L. vannamei exposed to 10 and 5mg/L of ambient ammonia-N for 2 and 7 days, respectively, were shown. These results indicated that ambient ammonia-N (>5mg/L) and NH3-N (>0.357mg/L) interrupted coagulation and down-regulated TG gene expression in L. vannamei, which caused ecotoxicity on immune deficiencies and may contribute the increased susceptibility to infection by pathogens., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Inc. The toxicity of methamidophos on the shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei was evaluated using acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity, behavior, and feeding rate as effect criteria. The biochemical characterization of the soluble cholunesterase (ChE) present in both muscle and eye tissues of L. vannamei was performed in a first phase of the study. In both tissues, almost full inhibition of enzyme activity by eserine sulfate was found, indicating that the measured activity is mainly from ChE and not from other esterases. The highest rate of substrate hydrolysis was found when acetylthiocholine was used as substrate. To evaluate the effects of methamidophos on L. vannamei AChE, behavior, and feeding rate, shrimps were exposed for 24h to several sublethal concentrations of methamidophos. Significant effects of the pesticide on behavior and AChE were found, with behavior being a more sensitive endpoint than AChE inhibition. Feeding rate was not a sensible endpoint under conditions tested.

Acute (96-h) semistatic toxicity tests were conducted by exposing the freshwater shrimp, Paratya australiensis, to atrazine and molinate in laboratory water and in river water both with and without sediment. The median lethal concentrations (LC50) and 95% fiducial limits of atrazine for P. australiensis in laboratory water in the absence and presence of sediment were 9.9 (8.6-11.5) and 6.8 (5.4-8.5)mg/L, respectively, while the corresponding values in river water were 9.8 (8.5-11.2) and 6.5 (5.4-7.8)mg/L, respectively. For molinate, the LC50 values in laboratory water in the absence and presence of sediment were 9.2 (7.0-12.1) and 9.0 (6.8-12.0)mg/L, respectively and the corresponding values in river water were 8.7 (6.4-11.8) and 8.2 (6.6-10.2)mg/L, respectively. Neither the river water nor the presence of sediment significantly (P<0.05) reduced the bioavailability of either chemical to P. australiensis. This was unexpected, as studies with other aquatic organisms have shown that sediment significantly reduced the bioavailability of these chemicals.

In the present investigation the changes in energy levels or caloric concentrations of Penaeus indicus postlarvae (PL) were determined after exposure to acute and sublethal concen- trations of lead. The biochemical constituents such as carbo- hydrates, proteins, and lipids were estimated in PL exposed to LC(5) (0.1495), LC(10) (0.3488), LC(25) (1.4660), and LC(50) (7.223 ppm) of lead for 48h. The effect of sublethal concentration (1.44 ppm) of lead was also studied on the above biochemical constituents at intervals of 24, 48, and 96 h, and 10 and 30 days. The caloric concentrations as well as biochemical constituents of the PL demonstrated a decrease on exposure to lead but proteins and lipids decreased to a maximum extent compared to carbohydrates. Moreover, acute concentrations were found to be more effective than sublethal lead. An increasing trend in the ratios of carbohydrate/protein and carbohydrate/lipid was observed during acute and sublethal exposure to lead, indicating more utilization of protein and lipid. Therefore, measuring the caloric concentration in PL of P. indicus can be used to evaluate the physiological effects of combating lead toxicity.

Oxygen consumption was measured in adult specimens of Litopenaeus vannamei shrimps from a coastal lagoon of Sinaloa, Mexico, during exposure to sublethal concentrations of the organophosphorus pesticides, Diazinon, Folidol, and Gusathion. Each individual was used as a control of itself, to avoid differences between treatments being masked by individual variability. In all three treatments with pesticides, respiration rate, measured by a polarographic electrode, was significantly lower than in controls.
