1. The Kaufman Ability Battery for Children Mental Processing Scale: A Valid Measure of 'Pure' Intelligence?

Abstract

Studied the interpretation of scores on the Kaufman Ability Battery for Children(K-ABC) (Kaufman and Kaufman, 1983) as a measure of "Pure" intelligence in the Israeli standardization sample of 1,600 students in kindergarten through grade 8. Schooling was found to affect raw scores on all K-ABC mental processing scores, and the effects of schooling exceeded the effects of age for five of the eight subtests. (SLD)

Abstract

A solution is offered to problems associated with the inequality in the manipulability of probabilities of classification errors of masters versus nonmasters, based on competency test results. Eschewing the typical arbitrary establishment of observed-score standards below 100 percent, the solution incorporates a self-correction of wrong answers. (TJH)

4. A Critical Examination of the 'Reliability' and 'Abnormality' Approaches to the Evaluation of Subtest Score Differences.

Abstract

Statistical significance and "abnormality" have been used as criteria for the evaluation of intra-individual subtest score differences. Shortcomings of these criteria are identified, and improved estimates of the true score differences are suggested. The applicability of the abnormality criterion to these improved estimates is reviewed. (SLD)

5. The "Pooled-Within Classes" Coefficient of Correlation (rw) in Partially Segregated Educational Systems

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to point out the logical, theoretical and statistical problems associated with the computation of the "pooled-within" correlation coefficient in partially segregated educational systems. It is argued that, since a between-individual-within-classes relationship of Y to X cannot possibly exist in classes which are entirely homogeneous with respect to either X or Y,the question concerning this relationship should be addressed only to the subsample of heterogeneous classes. Consequently, the measurement of this relationship should be restricted to this subsample, thus yielding a new coefficient, rwH, which is different from the usual coefficient, both conceptually and numerically. The remainder of the paper deals with the theoretical and statistical problems associated with the computation of rwHinstead of rw, its interpretation as a sample statistic and its functional relationship to rBand rT,the "between groups" and "total" correlation coefficients, respectively.
