Given the need in Scientometrics to get beyond merely classifying scientific production based on the classification of the journals in which it is published, there have been many attempts to classify papers directly. Little has been done, however, to check how reliable the results are. In this work, a collection of publications was generated which we call an Author's Assignation Collection (AAC) comprising 13449 papers referenced in the Scopus database and classified by their research guarantor with fractional weighting in terms of Scopus's own ASJC scheme. The methodological approach taken is described, and the collection's representativeness is evaluated and compared with the journal-based classification. There stand out both the great number of papers assigned by their research guarantors to more than one category (at times with even the same weight) and how frequently authors assigned categories which were not assigned to the journals in which their paper was published. In the context of recent developments in scientometrics to measure novelty or creative potential, Wu, Wang, and Evans (2019) propose a new disruption index that measures the extent to which a publication disrupts the field of science. We calculated the disruption index for some example papers. The analyses of the index values (using our Web of Science in-house database) show that they depend on the citation window (the period of time over which citations are collected). Patents include citations, both to other patents and to documents that are not patents (NPL, Non-patent literature). Non-patent literature (NPL) includes articles published in scientific journals. The technological impact of scientific works can be studied through the citations they receive from patents, just like the scientific impact of articles can be analyzed through the citations. The NPL references included in patents are far from being standardized, so determining which scientific article they refer to is not a trivial task. This paper presents a procedure for linking the NPL references of the patents collected in the Patstat database and the scientific works indexed in the Scopus bibliographic database. This procedure consists of two phases: a broad generation of candidate couples and another phase of validation of couples, and it has been implemented with reasonably good results at a low cost. The need for making information available on the Web, so that it can be accessed from anywhere, has resulted in many new web-based database sites. In many cases the data are unorganised with frequent duplication of information. This informal organisation and information redundancy make web site maintenance a much more difficult to access, etc. The database community knows that one way of avoiding these problems is to make use of the facilities provided by technology. But the development process of databases on the web is different than that of traditional databases. Therefore it is necessary to adapt the classical database development methodologies (process as well as techniques, notations and models) for working with web databases. This paper outlines the main methodologies for creating web databases and sums up the Midas/db methodology, developed by the Kybele Research Group of the University Rey Juan Carlos, in Madrid.
