SUMMARY Recent years, installation of photovoltaic (PV) system is active by the environmental problem and feed in tariff system. Due to PV's output fluctuation, the static var compensator (SVC) made by power electronics technology is planning to install in distribution system. The SVC is expected for maintain the voltage. But SVC differs in a theory of operation of the existing voltage controller load ratio control transformer (LRT) and step voltage regulator (SVR). Because the SVC operation makes the system impedance changes, the existing voltage controller may not operate effectively. In this study, the intelligent-control method which used the radial basis function (RBF) network is proposed. This method can reduce the effects of the SVC operation by including the performance characteristics of SVC in the conventional method. An advantage of unnecessary arrangement attention of the SVC setup node and easy cooperation with the existing equipment is obtained by applying this method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SUMMARY In the Tokaido Shinkansen, rolling stock types have been unified as an inverter controlled type, which was introduced after Series 300. As a result, the input power factor of the main converter used in the rolling stock has been controlled to 1. In accordance with this change, the role of reactive compensation of static var compensators (SVC) has shifted from the load power of trains to the power consumed by the reactance in the electrical power system. Therefore, when taking into consideration the aging of power converters, it is time to reassess their layout and the configuration for the future of the Tokaido Shinkansen. We reassessed the equipment configuration, capacity, and layout of power converters and verified the impact on the stabilization of the power supply when introducing self-commutated power converters. SUMMARY: The voltage variation in a remote system is large when the system is connected by long‐distance AC cables due to the cable capacitance. In Japan, the longest 54‐km 66‐kV AC submarine cable interconnection between the Kyushu mainland and Goto Islands was commissioned in 2005. It was requested to mitigate the voltage variation caused by switching off and on one circuit of the two circuits in the AC cables when a fault occurs. Since the conventional voltage control methods such as transformer tap changer or shunt capacitor and reactor banks are not sufficient because of their slow response time, a static var compensator (SVC) was installed on the Goto Islands. In such an application, an SVC control method should be developed so as not to override the existing voltage control systems. This paper describes the SVC control method developed for the Goto Islands AC interconnection project, which can be applied to similar situations. The effectiveness of the control method was verified by the results of effective value simulation and of field testing, which was implemented before the SVC was commissioned in 2007. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
