2. Electromyographic findings on two types of misdirection of regenerating axons

Abstract

The electromyographic analysis of associated movements after peripheral paresis reveals two types of misdirection: 1. (i) The one, most frequently occurring, is the simple misdirection of the axon to a “foreign” muscle. 2. (ii) In the second, rarely occurring type, two or more sprouts of one axon are connected to different muscles. This has been exemplified in two representative cases — a facial and an ulnar paresis. The synchronous action of two motor units, each belonging to one of two different muscles was compared with other synchronisation effects that have been observed in the blink reflex and in hemifacial spasm.
