The scalability of an all-optical packet-switched network based on subcarrier multiplexed optical label swapping routers with two wavelength conversion stages and 2R payload regeneration are experimentally demonstrated. A design of a tunable microwave photonic filter for noise suppression and channel interference mitigation in the front-end stage after the receiving antenna of an UMTS base station is presented. For the first time to the authors' knowledge a design procedure of OCDMA en/decoders based on superstructured fibre Bragg gratings employing synthesis methods is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. An experimental demonstration is given of the use of a transversal RF photonic filter to accomplish intermodal dispersion equalisation in a 10 Gbit/s optical fibre link using a Fabry-Perot laser. A practically independent intensity modulation arrangement is demonstrated based on two standard LiNbO[SUB3] electro-optical modulators (EOM) in a serial polarisation diversity (SPD) structure. Polarisation reduction from the typical values over 30-50 dB to levels <0.5 dB has been achieved.
