Presented for the first time is an accurate modelling hierarchy for mixed CNT bundle interconnects. Single-walled CNTs and multi-walled CNTs have been modelled as equivalent single conductor transmission lines and then combined to form a mixed CNT bundle interconnect, which is basically a multiple equivalent single conductor model. Two multiple equivalent single conductor interconnects have been taken to form the multiconductor transmission line model. The delays from transient analysis for both models for a unit bundle have been compared with the corresponding ones for SWCNT bundles and MWCNTs that exist in the literature. The design of a multisource metamaterial-based cavity antenna operating at about 9 GHz is presented. A 2×2 microstrip patch array acting as the multisource embedded in an ultra-thin (λ/22) cavity shows a directivity enhancement of 4.2 dB with regard to a monosource fed cavity antenna (23.2 dB instead of 19 dB). A compact slow-wave microstrip rat-race ring coupler is presented. The new structure effectively reduces the occupied area to 8% of the conventional rat-race ring coupler due to the slow-wave effect. A novel beeline compact microstrip resonant cell (BCMRC) is proposed. Its photonic bandgap and slow-wave effect are evaluated. A lowpass filter, consisting of three BCMRCs connected in series, exhibits advantages of low insertion loss in the passband, sharp, high and wide rejection in the stopband and compact size. For a given operational frequency, the unit cell surface area of a metallo-dielectric photonic bandgap structure (MBPG) is reduced by increasing the capacitance between adjacent unit cell elements. An MPBG structure possessing interdigitated corrugations is proposed in order to achieve this increase. The design of a novel rat-race coupler that can operate at two widely separated frequency bands is presented. A novel waveguide to microstrip line transition and power divider with a planar structure is presented. The transition and power divider is designed on both sides of a single layer dielectric substrate, and can be used as a feed of an array antenna with a waveguide feed structure or as a complete integration of waveguide components with active components such as MMIC. An accurate equivalent circuit model and the parameter extraction method are presented for the microstrip line with a complementary split ring resonator. A highpass filter with steep rejection slope is designed based on the model. The miniaturised wide stopband rejected microstrip filter is proposed. In order to cause the wide stopband suppression, coupled spur-lines are taken into consideration for the newly proposed bandpass filter. The coupled spur-lines can provide an attenuation pole at the second harmonic to enhance the suppression and broaden the stopband. Design principles for a power splitter driving a strongly coupled two-element handset array antenna have been derived and studied. Splitter circuits using lumped elements and distributed microstrip elements were designed and tested. The results show reasonable agreement between measured and theoretical results. New frequency-fixed beam-scanning microstrip leaky-wave antennas are reported. The beam-scanning ability at a fixed frequency of the antenna can be achieved with novel feeding configurations. A novel lowpass filter using offset double-sided parallel-strip lines (DSPSL) is proposed. The proposed lowpass filter has the advantages of enhanced stopband and high power-handling capability compared with the conventional microstrip lowpass filter, because the high impedance is realised by offsetting the top and bottom strips of DSPSL without decreasing the width of strips. A dual-mode microstrip bandpass filter using the degenerate modes of a modified square ring structure is proposed. The size of the new structure is 50% less than conventional dual-mode bandpass microstrip square resonator filters at the same centre frequency. A novel ultra-wideband bandpass filter is proposed on a back-to-back microstrip-to-CPW transition structure. A multiple-mode resonator on a CPW is formed to allocate its first three resonant modes around the lower-end, centre and upper-end of the 3.1 to 10.6 GHz UWB passband. Its two sides are fed by two microstrip-to-CPW transitions with enhanced frequency-dispersive coupling degree. A novel lowpass filter using spiral compact microstrip resonant cells (SCMRCs) for size reduction is presented. Four SCMRC resonators as open stub lines are connected at both sides of an SCMRC resonator so that the port impedance at the lowpass band is matched to 50 Ω. The proposed lowpass filter has compact circuit size and wide stop-band. A demonstration low pass filter is designed, fabricated and measured. A concurrent dual band microstrip filter using only a single set of open-loop resonators is proposed. Each design parameter of the filter is controlled by two physical parameters and the specifications of the two bands can be met simultaneously. A novel coplanar-type compact lowpass filter is proposed. It consists of an asymmetrical microstrip step discontinuity circuit with harmonic suppression and a low-impedance transmission line loaded with a capacitance. A design for a small size microstrip-to-slotline transition using planar lumped-element parallel LC circuits is proposed. The insertion loss is optimised in the frequency band 4 10 GHz. A compact, low-loss and narrowband dual-mode microstrip filter is proposed using degenerate modes of a microstrip patch resonator loaded with two narrow slots.
